Dart frog in the small tank and maybe some kind of lizard or skink in the big tank

Ooh, if you get dart frogs may I recommend Ranitomeya imitator aka the mimic poison dart frog. They are the most amazing little dart frogs and fairly easy to keep. If I recall they're alright in groups though they are a thumbnail species of dart frog and are fairly small. I recommend them because they display a form of Mullerian mimicry--two poisonous species mimic each others' warning colors--which could be an awesome segue into a discussion on mimicry and convergent evolution. How could they get more awesome than that? Well they don't just mimic one species. Off the top of my head I can recall three species they mimic: R. variabilis, R. summersi, and R. fantastica. And within those species they can also mimic individual morphs. For instance the Highland and Lowland morphs of R. variabilis. Some of those morphs of R. imitator share ranges as well and there are these transition zones where the morphs can mix but the populations overall remain isolated from one another because the mixed don't mimic either non R. imitator species as well. I'm not explaining it well. There's an excellent article on the phenomenon on dendrobates.org but it would be an excellent talking point for evolution and speciation.

I am so glad you posted this video, I have been thinking about your tank (yeah, I know get a life); I was just curious how it was doing. Love the passion you are spreading. I think dart frogs would be super cool! Lastly, a plunger? That made me laugh every time it came into shot.

Dart frogs would be good in the smaller tank. The moisture needed may be difficult with the doors cut into the big tank.

You're an awesome teacher, best of luck with all your tanks...so who feeds them on your 3 week hiatus? I too vote for dart frogs

I have seen someone use a turkey baster to suck up pockets of duckweed. Just a tip for people if it gets too much. Tiger lotus is not that easy a similar but much easier one is dwarf lily. Snails sometimes don't move for days and you think they are dead.

I have a Tiger Lotus that needs a lot more than my other plants. Add a root tab and extra light.

It's so awesome that your students are interested in all these things! I was going to mention the lucky bamboo shouldn't be fully submerged, but you were already on it.

Re: having trouble getting duckweed to grow -- it prefers still waters & dry tops (same for pistia, Salvinia minima, limnobium laevigatum, and phyllanthus fluitans in my experience). Filter bubbles popping at the surface and/or snails and fish tugging them under can hamper growth or outright kill them. Actually, a great way to kill unwanted duckweed is to spray a fine mist of water over them regularly until they die off.

Re: Red Lotus - the one I have loves clay soil and has grown like crazy ever since the roots hit dirt. Last count, I had fifteen lily pads floating at the top of my 20g tank (kind of ridiculous, honestly. I need to trim several back but I haven't the heart). It doesn't seem practical for you to dirt the tank at this point (ha :d) so I think a root tab would be a safe bet.

Love the dart frog idea!

Oh! As a lover of short fin and wild bettas, do you have any idea how I might go about finding breeding pairs of betta mahachaiensis and betta siamorientalis here in the states?

Thank you for sharing what's going on in your classroom! Sorry for writing a novel. :)

You're welcome! I noticed all my betta tanks (baffled filters, no surface spattering) had super healthy floaters while the plants on the surface of my other tanks all had signs of melting where water had sat for too long.

Thanks for the advice on where to look! I guess I'll venture to the wild frontier of FB, hah. :) All the best!
