Did the fish live after that? Most likely your cycle just went down the drain so to speak.

Good for you, I thought after your cleaning you might not have had any more BB in there.

I have the same filter! I love it too though I will tell you that after a while it developed some gunk in the tube that I cleaned out with a pipe cleaner haha when you do clean your filter, use the old tank water (when doing a water change) to clean out your filter so as to not remove the beneficial bacteria. Same goes for the media inside the filter, when it gets too dirty-looking, just squeeze it and give it a good rinse in the old water. :)

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that you are making a big mistake by cleaning everything like that in the sink.. I used to do the same thing so don't feel too bad. Please research "nitrogen cycle"... You need the good bacteria in your tank to convert ammonia to nitrites and then to nitrates. Please make sure you change the water as much as possible (daily if you can) to dilute any ammonia , until the tank "cycles".. Next I would get a water test kit if possible, or even test strips would work. You fish store can test your water as well.. And finally, the proper way to clean the tank is by using a gravel-vac syphon. If you feel the need to clean anything in the tank in the future, use the tank water you have removed so you do not kill any of the beneficial bacteria. I hope this helps you out, and happy fish keeping!

Ok, I'm glad you understand about the bacterial cycle. One thing to note is that the bacteria do not live in the water column at all, but they do colonize any surface in the tank and in the filter. There is nothing wrong with doing 100% water changes every once in a while in my opinion, in fact I find it beneficial. The biomax is intended for starting bacterial colonies and maintaining them. Your ammonia levels should really be at zero at all times and I think the reason for your problem is the cleaning of all the surfaces with tap water, killing off most of your colony. Over time you will see the levels drop if you let them build up. Just keep a close eye on everything and be vigilant about changing water!

Species Unknown Species Unknown hi, thank you so much for this!!I just want you to know that I don't usually do 100% water changes. I just do it monthly because the filter that came with the tank didn't really do a good job cleaning it but now that I bought a new filter, I plan on doing it less often. Also I put a little bit of the old water when I put him back in the tank. I should probably put more huh? I just bought biomax which is supposed to help build up good bacteria so hopefully that helps. Also I test the water every time I do 25% water changes and everything seems to be fine, however the ammonia level seems to be always stuck at .25 ppm so I'm really hoping the Biomax will help with that :/ Again, thank you so much!!!
