Everyone's pretty mad at this parent based on bad info, but the little girl in the vid is, like, TEN by now! That fish feels NO more pain, people. He's good and dead. Dead is where the water is always clean, the food is always wiggling, the streams and paddies are always warm, mates are ever ready and available, and overlong fins never tire.

poor fish
you can't just throw a fish in any cup of water and say it'll live.
Bettas thrive best in 10 Gallon, heated TANKS with many hiding spots and live plants.dont get it for a kid as a "toy" or a "decoration".
they also like other foods than flakes, such as bloodworms, or brine shrimp.
Freeze dried better than flakes, live food better than freeze dried.
Don't impulse buy a living being.

Yes, this is obviously not the proper way to care for a fish- it's essentially neglect, but I truly don't think that these people meant any wrong. They just didn't know any better. Of course they should learn to take care of this animal properly, and they should by all means get it the proper tank and substrate with a filter and a heater (and if they can't, it's best to give the fish to someone who can care for it), but they're not maliciously hurting this fish and they don't deserve hate.

The size of the tank... Now that is a matter of opinion. I know people who kept healthy bettas in a gallon fish tank. Betta spendens, the colorful Bettas from the stores, which are fish that are farmed and domestically developed, they do not exist in the wild in this form. They have been raised and fully acclimated to this type of habitat. The wild species of Bettas need bigger tanks than a 10 gallon.

Quite annoyed by this, though I was like them before when I bought a betta fish and put it in a 0.5 gallon container with cool water and didnt even acclimate it to the temp, then overtime I forgot about the poor little dude for like a month. I did some research and teared a little bit after realizing how cruel I was so I purchased a 5 gallon tank with a heater and soon transferred him into there. My betta fish lived a crappy life for 2 months in that container but thrived in the 5 gallon tank for 6 months before it died, I will never forget the change in his behavior when he got a better tank, he always made a bubble nest.

This fish needs a proper tank, a filter, a heater, soft plants or real plants. No plastic. Giving your kid a bowl of water and a fish doesn’t teach them responsibility it just teaches them this betta is a decoration. Which he is NOT. He is a living animal!

I would like you to put your daughter in a 3 by 5 ft room and see how she likes it. That's how the beta feels, don't introduce your daughter into thinking that you can just get an animal on the spot with 0 research and thought and money put into it. My beta fish lives in a 10 gallon tank I have a baby in a 3 gallon tank and 8 female adults in a 65 gallon tank. This is disgusting and you people are idiots fish have feelings to. And yes this is better then the little container they were in but half of the time people who are experienced buy them and give them an actual aquarium. never seen such idiocy

NyaMinx

a Betta fishes stomach is about the size of it's eye! it only needs one pellet every 1 week! a betta fish also needs a air filter for less stress! Stress can kill Betta Fish.
Jayla White
Jayla White - 7 years ago
NyaMinx 1 pellet per week is NOT good at all! They would starve
Jayla White
Jayla White - 7 years ago
NyaMinx this is copy and pasted from google, “This translates to about 3 bloodworms or brine shrimp per feeding. If you feed pellets, this equals about 2-3 soaked pellets per feeding. A betta can be fed this amount once or twice a day.”
NyaMinx
NyaMinx - 7 years ago
Jayla White that would give them Health issues. Again " Their Stomach is about the Size of their eye" So if you give them 2-3 pellets a Day that will be like eating 5 BigMacs and 2 bowls of cereal. a Pellet expands in the water so when they eat it then it expands in their stomach to last them a few days. potentially a week. if you give a betta 3 pellets they can experience Constipation, Stomach Problems, and Bloating.

You did things wrong first you never put the pet store water in your tank or bowl and plus bowls aren't that great for fish anyways pet store water raises ph levels and ammonia and you need to acclimate the fish or else it will die of shock I know that for a fact because my mom put a fish in right away and it died the next day and when you put your fish in wait at least 24 hours to feed that fish

Damn, they might as well have put the poor thing in a bottle of Poland spring in the dead of winter. Bettas need at least 2.5 gallons to be healthy and live a full life and they need warm water (76-80° farenheit I think) or else they might not eat or become lethargic.

very cute little girl, i really hope the fish lasted for a while. But as many commenters are pointing out, the tank was far too small. Just for future reference if you ever plan on getting a new tank, research the nitrogen cycle, and get a tank minimum of 2.5 gallons with a heater and filter, keeping the water in the 75-83 degree range Fahrenheit and acclimate the fish before pouring him in. its a cute video though, but we all make mistakes.

Bettas are not supposed to be in that tiny tank if you want to keep that fish alive then it needs a heater, filter and sometimes a light but still you need to do research. that plant is more deadly than the fish witch is not even deadly because that will rip his tail and he will die and you guys most likely did not clean them so it releases harmful things in the tank.you guys fed him like 5 of the betta food balls!!!! he will get bloated and die that is how one of mine died. Oh just a question, why you guys make clickbait nobody likes it. just before you buy another one remember you guys can not take care of one of the most simple fish out there and the only reason you buy it is so you can make daughter be happy then get bored of it and kill it by feeding it human food.

Do you realize how retarded you're both acting? You seem to act like a fish is some toy or decoration just there to entertain you. Listen to yourself talking, you say nothing about proper care, just pink rocks, purple plant, and laugh your ass off like the biggest joke ever just cuz it's name is Nemo. Who cares about your fishes stupid name is copied off some movie? That kid seemed to get bored of it and just play around with the hat after hearing you can't put fish in the bath and real fish don't actually talk like the character Nemo. Clearly did no research as the conditions your caring for it are terrible. You didn't acclimate the fish or use water conditioner. On top of that its a small bowl. Why buy fish for toddlers without thinking first or even wanting to care for the fish yourself? Use your brain.

Please inform yourself before keeping live plants and animals! Betta's can be your friend for 10 years but not like you're keeping it. Before transferring the fish it should get used to the water in the aquarium (temperature, oxygen level, and a lot more), you should add aquarium water bit by bit to the fish.
Once transferred to the aquarium you have to keep an eye on the water quality, you don't want your precious Betta to swim in it's own P&P do you?
Hope you care and enjoy your Betta for long time.

poor fish... you need a HEATER AND FILTER SO IT CAN LIVE. I mean, not to rude but,it's a fish. Don't get me wrong it's cool and all but your over feeding, And first time to. Second you need a filter so the water stays oxygenated,In case you don't know a fish need air to have a healthy lifestyle. I know this because half of fish and I'm pretty sure we all read up on them. They seem easy but, who's gonna clean the tank when it has ICH a horrible thing to have. WHERE are you going to put the fish when clean its hosue?!?!?!

Your not caring for the betta fish correctly. I am not trying to hate but this is like animal ubuse. You need to do research before you buy an animal, their living things too. I will list the things you need and for care.

1. You NEED a 2.5 gallon tank NO LESS

2. You MUST only feed 1 little peice of food daily

3. You need a filter or you MUST clean the tank 50% twice a week

4. You need a heater in the tank (they are from a tropical place) At least 75-85°

5. DO NOT POKE THE GLASS

6. Never put bettas together

7. Don't put sharp objects in the tank (It could cut there fins)

8. You need to alcamate them so they get used to the water

Please Follow These
I really hate seeing these animals abused
Yes it is actally ubusing
Thank You

PLEASE NO HATING ON THIS COMMENT ITS MY OPPION AND REAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CARE FACTS FOR THE FISH

Nah fam,I just bought a betta a week ago,no experience with fish, but my dad has fish blood,so I knew it in me too, took this long to activate in my genes, left the ac on blast, woke up to a betta hiding and not moving, stuck my arm in the tank, very cold, stuck in heat pad in,and he moved near the heat pad, that's when I knew his problems,i have a filter and plants to help control waste, I used 3 gallons of distilled water and 2 gallons of spring water, like a boss,I don't even drink disgusting polluted tap water, why would I give it to my fishies? Fish people online said distilled water is bad,but he loves it and no Chloramine treatment needed, keep it organic. I'm thinking of tossing baby earth worms in thee,I wonder will he eat them, but I love my worms too, what to do do? I'm trying to build him an ecosystem, that requires little to no maintenance from me,because I aint's got time for all of that, which is why I never had pets, but fish was calling from Dad's genetics. I randomly bought them one day after work, now I'm getting Betta crazy,I'm thinking of going today and buy the rest. They are trapped in those tiny bottle at store like slaves. They are so much happier in bigger water homes, damn my neighbors gas powered lawn maintenance equipment, all mine are electric, because I'm environmental, and I care about noise pollution ,unlike my neighbors.

Lovely Hammy Planet It depends on how big the pieces are or the age of the betta. I feel my betta 1 per day becuase he is a baby and he has bigger flakes of food. I will most likely always feed him one to 2 per day bc of the brand.

Also if you read the whole thing it says NO HATE. Those are all facts and its for health and care for the fish. So why do you even care? I have researched on this fish for over 5 years I think I would know so trust me its right. You have no place to tell me im wrong and unreal because there facts.

I'm not an expert on fishes (as I am only taking care of a goldfish myself so I could work my up to a pufferfish) but I sure do know that fish can NOT live in the conditions you have him in. You need to definitely research before you buy a fish unless you want it to die.

I personally don't care about his daughter. He should teach her that bettas and other fishes (and animals in general) are living and intelligent creatures. They may be scared of something, stressed, nervous and feel pain. That's NOT a toy. If you want to have pets, you should do everything to make them happy and healthy.

Did you just dump him in without acclimating him? Adding the dirty fish water to the "tank" cough bowl cough? Also where is the room for him to swim? Filter? Heater? They're tropical fish! Also you should know they ALWAYS eat like they haven't eaten. They will eat until they kill themselves doing so! You clearly didn't do your research. I doubt that fish lived longer than a year. And I bet they just thought "oh that's normal whatever. fish die". All of mine have lived over four years. 5 years being the average. They're so lovely and intelligent, why would you confine a creature to something as small as a bowl. With no care of at least heating. I understand they're not super messy and you CAN get away with no filter. But the 1 gallon minimum is ridiculous. Who want's to be confined to a living space so small you can hardly turn around?
Moonshadow Wolfie
Moonshadow Wolfie - 8 years ago
How was the fish deadly? Also, you need to put the cup WITH the fish in the cup so the water temp can change to the exact same temp BEFORE putting the fish into the tank. Also, you need to feed it less and if I remember correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) you need rocks that look natural like a mixture if different shades of browns not neon pinks, blues, and purples. Hopefully Petco or Petsmart didn't tell you the wrong info if those are the places you got the fish from. They tend to often tell lies and give customers the wring info on EVERY SINGLE pet in their store and care.

The only thing I agree to it is the tank size. The pet store that knows its fishes has this same bowl but with more water. There are even more plants than this one.

But I agree, the water shouldn't have mixed in, is the water treated/cycled, the plant's too sharp, etc. Sorry baby but caring for a fish is just like caring for a dog.

Honestly thanks for all those real fish owners with experience and knowledge. It's pathetic how people try to tell you that "betta fish can live in small bowls" "they live in mud puddles" "they don't live that long" "they don't need a filter or heater" obviously none of them had the mental capacity to think of doing a simple google search. Betta fish are some of the most abused and neglected fish next to goldfish and its terrible to see pet stores and brands trying to sell people as much as possible even if they don't know shit.

Sigh... Where to begin... Betta fish need a 2.5 gallon tank MINIMUM. Not only does that tank look like its less than a gallon, but its filled up with rocks and all of his swimming room is taken up by the decoration. And as for the decoration? Stiff plastic with sharp ends. Dont be surprised when his tail ends up getting shredded all to hell. Especially since he cant get away from the plant. No filter. No heater. No temperature match before putting the fish in. Did you condition the water? Doubt it. And a small child that will most definitely scream and bang on the glass regardless of what you tell her. I hope you guys have done some research since this video and fixed the mistakes for the sake of the fish. That is, if the poor thing is even alive anymore.

The bowel is small, but if you fill it all the way to the top it will give him more room to swim! Make sure you also put in some beta conditioner into the water! Betas are very susceptible to diseases! So let the conditioner sit in the water for at least 15 min before letting him back in! My beta is alive and well, and has lived in this size bowel for almost 2 years now! Just adequately oxygenate the water, keeping it clean by cleaning it once a week! All the way! Gravel, everything... Cause betas don't create a ton of toxins, but living in there poop can kill them! Also, betas do not like bright colored rocks and fake plants! I have very muted gravel and Marimo moss in my tank! My beta loves it and has actually gotten deeper color and richer looking fins! ☺️ hope this helps!

Betta Fish 101

Bettas are very hearty fish, so they won't hurt a human. Feed them 1-2 pellets once every day, and feed him some dried blood worms for a healthy diet. Don't put 2 bettas in one tank or they will fight. Clean the tank once a week, and treat the water so the betta can live longer. Also look out for sickness. If you have a bubble nest show up, dont over react, this is normal.
Also, the only reson why i did Betta Fish 101, is because the people in this video need some help on how to care for a betta. Also, dishonest click bait.

Actually the fish tank isn't a bad size, my fish tank is just a little bigger than that tank. When you first get a betta fish they are most likely noy going to eat because they need to get use to their new home, it takes them about two to three days to start eating (That's how long it took my fish) and adding the water that the fish came in, into the bowl is ok, you just need to make sure you clean the tank out two days later.

I'm new to fishing, bought a betta last week, asked the ladies if they are edible. Bought 3 more last night, the big one chases the little ones, had to keep them separate, tired of sticking my fingers in there to stop big red from chasing the little bettas. Big red betta chases his reflection. Threw some ants in there,he does not eat them, threw a moth in there, don't thinks he ate. give him betta food,he only eats if it sinks, even then most it it floats to the bottom, and he does not eat it, why the heck is the glass so reflective,it confuses him,and makes him attack his reflection. I have no heater, left the ac on ,woke saw no betta, stuck my finger in,and it was cold, found betta damn near dead, stuck a heat pad in their betta was healthy again in a few hours. betta lie sinking food and food that looks like it's running away from them, they like to hunt living food.I'm going to put them outside and let them feed on mosquito larvae. i might go back and buy all the betta and release them in waterways to help control mosquitoes.

Jay Choi the tank is way too small. Berta's require at least 2.5 gallons if you want them to live their full lives. Betta fish can live 8-10 years when taken care of properly and not 1-2 years like pet stores tell you. They are also tropical fish so yes they do require a heater their water should be 78 degrees F or higher. Just because the fish comes in a smaller container does not mean it can live in that small of a container. The cups are entirely too small. Betta fish just like every other fish also need filtration despite what everyone always says. To successfully keep a betta in a bowl which is much like keeping your dog in a kennel all it's life you would need to do 50-75 percent water changes every few days and that still isn't a guarantee your fish will live. Doing so many water changes puts a lot of stress on the fish and without a heater the fish will be way more likely to get diseases like fin rot, ick, and white cotton mouth disease. I've also made the mistake of keeping Bettas in bowls and they didn't live long at all even with me doing all I thought I could do. Now that I keep my Bettas in a tank they are so much happier and healthier!
Jay Choi
Jay Choi - 8 years ago
Tank isn't too small for a betta, when you purchase them they come in containers two times smaller. A betta does not require a heater but is recommended, and if you clean the bowl once or twice a week then it will be clean. Lastly, a few pellets aren't going to make the fish obese. Dude learn how to you punctuation and research into this further.

is it me or am I the only one that doesn't see anything wrong with this. The fish is fine, the bowl is not too little (Because if that fish really wasn't meant to be in little places then why is it in a very tiny jar??) Just because the tittle had deadly in it doesn't mean the fish died, and they didn't really over feed it, it was just a bit. I Dont see how they are "Neglecting" the fish. He seems pretty ok, and the kid seems to be pretty chilled about it too, not going bonkers over the fish, I'm sure it'll be ok. The only thing I see that they didn't do right was put the fish in the bag and let him get use to the temperature, but I don't see it so shocking that they had no heater or filter, back in the days people only had fish tanks, not fancy equipment. The only thing we all did was put them fish in the bag and let them get use to the temperature. But hey I ain't no specialist on fish, I'm just saying I had two of them before and they lasted for a very long time

Okay so first of
I am not Hating
1) Bettas Need At Least 2.5 Gallons Of Water. And They Need To Live In A TANK not a Bowl. As a bowl spoils bettas eyesight
2) The tank needs to be filtered and heated
3) first, you should acclimate the betta fish, then Net It gently inside (if u get a new betta, only then net it) As YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO MIX THE STORE WATER WITH UR PRE TREATED WATER
4) Was your water even pre treated? You should've at least put water conditioner.
5) your betta fish needs a light in his tank
6) YOU HAVE A SHARP PLASTIC PLANT IN YOUR TINY BOWL!! At least put a silk plant!
7) You CANNOT OVERFEED THE BETTA
4 PELLETS ARE MAXIMUM FOR ONE TIME IN A DAY.
8) NO-NO-NO TO THIS VIDEO
9) I'm NOT HATING
JUST TELLING SO U CAN GET A BETTA IN THE FUTURE AND TAKE PROPER CARE!
I'm helping you by telling and trust me i am not hating this video! This is a pretty betta pls take proper care

oh my god if anyone sees, this fish are definitely NOT first time pets. Consider or birds like budgies, who can live around 30 years I believe, easy to maintain, and energetic and playful, and are VERY easy to tame if you buy from a breeder. or even rodent if you don't have the money and time for a bird. ALWAYS do your research on a friend your planning on getting! cheers :-)

You guys must have done no research. Seriously. All pets require a level of responsibility. When you bought the fish you became responsible for him and by putting him in that miserably small tank, overfeeding him, and not even bothering to adjust him to the temperature of the water in the bowl, you pretty much killed him already. You would do loads of research before buying a dog, why wouldn't you when buying a fish, even if they don't seem like they would be as difficult to take care of?

Jurdon
Jurdon - 8 years ago
I suggest you remove the guppies if you can, or get a bigger tank, as you are overstocking. 2-2.5 gallons is the bare minimum for ONE betta. A 5 gallon could most likely house your three fosh comfortably. If not, the ammonia from your fishes's waste could build up to harmful levels and kill your fish.

That fish tank is WAY TOO SMALL! That poor fish is already stressed out enough having a toddler owner that's probably going to kill it anyways. He doesn't need the stress of feeling trapped! I own a Betta fish and have owned one before, and my brother is breeding bettas. That fish in the video is probably going to try to jump out and kill itself so it doesn't have to go through this agonizing torture any longer. PLUS BTW maybe you should consider waiting till she is a little OLDER BEFORE GETTING A PET THAT SHE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR!

And there is no place for him to hide... the rocks seem too bright, you didn't even keep him in the container and put him in the water for 15-20 minutes, that's actually very important to do, you don't have a heater or anything to tell the temperature with! The temperature for beta fish is 76-78°F. I have my red veiltail, his name is Alpha, and he swims right up to me when I go to look into his tank! That betta probably didn't even last a week...

the person who helped me out with betta fish gave me a way nicer and bigger tank than that that tank honestly looks really cheap and ik betta fish jump but I think it could use a little more water. I have 2 betta (one male and one female and of course separate tanks) I chose to start off with betta fish cause they don't need filters and I've had them for a year now and I've actually bonded with them maybe a week after I got them and love how excited they get when ever I walk up to them

Poor thing! Never put a betta fish in a bowl, Its to cramped for them. Also don't pour the water from the store in with the fish, that's dirty water that could harm a fish and out it under stress with the temp change . I understand this was made in 2011 but still poor thing! It looks extremely unhealthy to, Its colors aren't vibrant enough to be healthy.

That is too small. No matter what anyone tells you or what stupid stores think, you CANNOT put a betta in that tiny little bowl. At the very least put him in a 2.5 gal. For him to truly be happy, he needs to be in a 5 gal. I know it's the little girls and she can't have a giant 5 gal tank, but at least get a 2.5 gal.

+Ƙαωαιι Ɗяαgσηѕ lol probably. Or maybe he's just tired. You turn off the light of the tank or any lights in the room at night right? Maybe turn lights off for the tank to be dark enough at maybe 9-9:30 and turn the lights on once you get out of bed. That's what I would suggest, anyways. That's usually what I do, and my fish zooms around and he goes and hides and he swims around some more. Also make sure he has placed to hide. He may be able to sleep better that way. Not saying your fish is just tired, but if he is, then that's just what I would suggest.

+Ƙαωαιι Ɗяαgσηѕ check ph levels, ammonia levels, water temperature, and how hard the pressure of the filter is. You might need some things to check it. I know you can go buy ph test thingies. The water may just be too cold. If it is, just go buy a small water heater. That should do the trick. If the ph is too high, there should be some stuff at pet stores, along with things for everything else. If you try all of those and none seem to work, he may or may not be sick, but I doubt it.

First problem you didn't acclimate the fish, the tanks dirty, and too small, it's not good to feed it only one type of food, there's no filter or heater it's basic care if you don't know how to care for one then don't make you're 3 year old do it.

ForeverBuckskin well some kinds of fish. But no matter what kind of fish you get, taking care of them is definitely a piece of cake, but not all kinds are that difficult. But, yeah, a lot of them are/can be. People need to research more. Seriously, I'm not even a teen and I took the time to actually research on this, and "responsible adults" just decide one day "I'm gonna get a fish!" And don't even research, then just run to Walmart and grab a bowl, food, decorations, and fish. Like, seriously, what?

ForeverBuckskin - 8 years ago
They are over feeding it, they added the pet store water (you are supposed to float their water in yours to get the right temperature), no filtration, (I doubt they clean it often). Please do research before buying a pet. Fish are probably one the hardest animals to keep happy and healthy. And they shouldn't be pets for little kids.
MLP Dark Sapphire
MLP Dark Sapphire - 8 years ago
+Dena Mello Yup I know. I would never tap the walls or shake it cuz that just scares them away. I'm thinking of maybe getting a guppy or balloon Molly or platy instead.
PrettyGayForABisexual
PrettyGayForABisexual - 8 years ago
MLP Dark Sapphire just make sure that, whatever you do, you make sure his tank isn't clustered, he has at least one place to hide, you clean the tank regularly, you turn the light off at night, and, if you have some, buy some betta water declorinator (idk. Whatever takes out the chlorine). Make sure you read the label and instructions and everything, and it might be best to get one meant for bettas. It won't be too bad if you don't, but it's probably best. And don't shake the tank or tap the glass too much. And also, just wanted to say, if you get a betta that's red, and you get the food with colour enhancers, it'll enhance the colour, but if you have a blue/purple/dark fish, then the food will build its immune system. You probably know a lot of this stuff, but I just wanted to put it out there just in case.
MLP Dark Sapphire
MLP Dark Sapphire - 8 years ago
+Dena Mello When I get my betta but I'm forced to keep it in a bowl I'll give it the best I can. I'll catch it with a cup instead of net for clean outs, only 4 pellets/flakes a day, and some water conditioner and scoop out a cup of water and pour in a cup of warmer water to warm up the tank everyday.
PrettyGayForABisexual
PrettyGayForABisexual - 8 years ago
+MLP Dark Saphire I agree. Fish should not be fed much or else they will get bloated. It's kind of hard to count out 4 or 5 little flakes, so I just grab a small bit. I know its more than 4 or 5 when it hits the water, but the fish are definitely happy and healthy. I always make sure to check if they're bloated or not before I feed them (unless I'm in a hurry and have to go. I won't really have time but I try to) and they have been bloated a couple of times, so whichever one is bloated I just don't really feed them for a day or two to let it get out of their system (since I don't have peas). They are happy and healthy, but I'm honestly surprised they don't have disease or they're not dead or dying because I got them from Walmart. I've had them for about 3-4 months, so I'm surprised. But I'm just happy they're happy and healthy. I got my betta, then my niece got a betta because they were afraid she'd want one, so hers ended up getting a 2.5 gal and mine got a 5 gal, but both are happy and healthy and doing great

PrettyGayForABisexual
PrettyGayForABisexual - 8 years ago
I agree. Maybe just start out small and slowly advance. I think an easy dog might be good to have, even when they're a toddler, as long as you don't let them strangle them or watch them when they get close. Just don't let them have it as a pet at that age. Wait until they better understand certain things, like maybe 5,6, or 7, and give them their own goldfish or turtles or something. Then gradually progress from fish to fish at first then, once you think they're ready, you can let them have a Guinea pig or something. Finally, you can let them have a dog, cat, pig, ferret, whatever they desire that they can actually take care of and understand that they are not toys
MLP Dark Sapphire
MLP Dark Sapphire - 8 years ago
+i have more than 1 name For goodness sakes no. That's so wrong! What idiot told you that wrong shit? You do NOT feed any animal "what seems like a lot". +Dena mello I do agree but, better yet give them nothing. No pets at all, they're not even old enough. Definitely do NOT give them a puppy that's even more work than fish. Kids at that age don't really need a pet in my opinion. At an age when they research, know what they need to do, and understand it's not a toy or robot, know what not to do, then that age they should have a pet.

In my opinion, fish is the LAST thing to give a child that age. They will STILL not listen and act like it is a fictional character. Like feeding it human food, taking the fish out to play (I know Betta Fish have lungs but still...) put fingers in the water, tap the glass, over feed it, shake the tank (if small), will try to ''play'' with him, put him in a sink or tub to try to give it a bath, or even get mad and hit it (my step sister did that to her Betta, thank GOD I saved him). Parents think they are easy, first time pets but are not. Fish are usually harder to take care of. I always think when I see parents buying they 6 year old children a fish, the store workers just signed it's death certificate for the poor thing...

+jake pike Jules is right, males and females will fight each other if you leave them in (unless they are docile enough, but you have to have very calm bettas and they need to be in good numbers)
And if you plan on breeding, they must be conditioned first, together but separated. Some people put a male and female in a divided tank, others set them in small tanks next to each other, there's multiple ways, but if you drop one straight into the tank with the other, there's a 99% chance that there will be some pretty bloody fights.

Bettas do best in a tank at least 2 gallons in size, with a small filter and heater to keep the water temperature at a constant 78 to 80 degrees F. They also like live plants in the tank---plenty, to make them feel safe. Feed them only once a day---betta pellets are ok---but only three to five at a time. They also love the occasional treat like freeze dried bloodworms or brine shrimp. Change about 25 to 50% of their water once a week.

I have had my betta in a tank slightly larger than this without a heater or a filter for two years and he's perfectly healthy. He's got great color, his fins are no where near drooping, he's active, and he eats just fine. Honestly, they are resilient beasts. If you keep your betta fed, partially change his tank water, and give him enough room to stretch his fins, there is no reason he can't thrive in an environment such as this.
Jurdon
Jurdon - 8 years ago
okay, i understand where you're coming from but this is a COLD bowl, they are overfeeding it, and it lasted like a week. In the wild, a male betta has a territory at least 3 feet wide. I'm not saying a big tank is necessary, but 2.5 gallons is the minimum. You want to easily teach your child responsibility? Get a vegetable-eating invertebrate such as a stick insect or hissing beetle. They can be hands-on or hands off, are nearly unkillable, and can be fed various veggies. And also, if an animal like a fish was kept in a bowl and lived a couple years, it was scraping by. Bettas are resilient as hell but they shouldn't be forced to the limits of survival so some uneducated idiot doesn't have to be a responsible pet owner.

Betta fish are tropical fish from Thailand. Despite what people think they live in rather large bodies of water over there. They need 3-5 or more gallons of water for just ONE. They also need a heater, their proper temperature are 76-82 degrees. They need proper filtration, and they need a properly cycled tank before you put the fish in which can take weeks, even months. When you purchase the fish it needs to be acclimated to the water. And also, fish flakes are a terrible choice for food. They are empty calories that just bloat. A nice pellet is best. It needs it's water changed weekly, maybe bi-weekly. You need to use DECHLORINATED water with a water conditioner. The water parameters also need to be checked frequently with a liquid (not strips) testing kit. Pet stores sell these poor fish in cups and give out wrong care and information. Do your own research before getting these creatures. They are not as easy to care for as one would think.

khaki91
khaki91 - 7 years ago
Mikah Ramsey The size of the tank...
Mikah Ramsey
Mikah Ramsey - 7 years ago
You are so correct! I did a week of research before even going to a pet store to just look at the betta fish, I'm 13 and quite short so when we went in there it seemed like they thought i was dumb they told us they could live perfectly fine in the cups and they clearly did not care about the fish i knew that it needed at LEAST 2.5 gallon fish tank, a heater (cause its tropical) a filter and some other stuff and the dude was like "it can just live like this." it disgusts me.

No way,I'm new to fish petting, they let me touch them sometimes now> i'm very unconventional, untraditional, sometimes unorthodox. I just dumped my bettas in water and they are more alive than they were in the store, they are getting crazy now,had to separate them, but big red, won't settle down, chases his reflection. Oh yeh,i used distilled water with about 25% spring water, lots of water to buy, many plastic jugs polluting the planet now :) I'm not topping off or changing water,it has plants and filter, now I need bottom feeders to eat the food waste that the betta did not eat, picky eaters, also may need algae eaters,if algae starts to grow, and I'm considering putting them outside to feed on mosquito larvae, they would love to eat those under water squirming maggot bloodsuckers.

+Moonlight Star Do you know what your friend's setup is like? Is the fish in a small bowl with no filter, heater? If the fish is lying on the rocks it's a very bad sign. Your friend might just be ignorant on how to properly keep these fish. I'd let you friend know that betta do much better in a bigger tank, with a heater and filter. Also talk to your friend about doing weekly water changes and to also purchase water conditioner to kill the chlorine in the water. Bring it up nicely, don't attack your friend. If your friend doesn't seem to care, drop the issue and bring it up again another time. If your friend doest want to change the setup, ask your friend if you could have her fish and get him in a proper setup if you can.

+Chloe Mattei Every fish or aquatic creature needs their tank cycled before putting them in the tank. You can get away with not doing it but it's a lot of work and you'd have to do daily water changes. Otherwise putting an aquatic creature into a tank that isn't cycled will kill the creature due to ammonia etc.

Actually, it is recommended that you cycle a NEW tank for approximately 2 weeks so that the tank has time to cultivate a good bacteria culture that will help keep the tank clean and ammonia levels low, thus being beneficial for your fish.

Alright guys first of all, I don't agree with the current settings of Nemo. A bowl IS kind of sad for a betta. However, you can see that, from the parents educating the little girl on what to do with him (don't overfeed, only feed fish food), they actually care for him. From what I think, they just assumed that bettas were normal goldfish and didn't do their research beforehand, but never set out to torture the fish.
Chris Wilson
Chris Wilson - 8 years ago
Goldfish fare worse in a bowl than bettas do. You can keep a betta in a bowl if you keep on top of the water changes. It's hardly ideal but it's at least possible; it'll get sick much more easily and probably be very stunted and stressed but it's not outright going to kill it. Goldfish, not so much. They're much more messy and naturally a lot bigger than a betta. That means more ammonia and a need for more space. As for the parents, they're not teaching her anything remotely useful. If you can upload a video to youtube, you can take 10 minutes to google how to take care of the fish and that would be a great learning experience for their daughter. This is just neglectful, wilful ignorance and speaks to a mentality that they're happy to teach their kid stuff without knowing a damn thing about it themselves. That's how idiots happen. IMO, they deserve the hate, maybe it'll make them think about their decisions.

First off, you shouldn't house two bettas together, as that can stress them out and lead to fin nipping. Betta are solitary fish an no matter what people say, no Betta should be housed with another Betta. Also, without a heater, your betta's body temperature can drop, killing your fish. Plus, it can create a buildup in ammonia, which can also kill your fish.

umm, I don't think your betta will last long because u have to acclimate it and u did not not do that. if u get a new fish , here r some tips 1 wait 15 minutes then add a tiny cup of water that is from the bowl or tank and wait another 15 minutes REPEAT that step two more times when your done with the third cup wait another 15 minutes then you'll be able to set your fish into the tank or bowl step 2 don't put it in a bowl it could cause high risk of ammonia and diseases step 3 if your planning on letting your toddler take care of it bad idea it's best that u feed it not your toddler because she could feed it too much or forget to feed it step 4 it is better to get a real plant because the plastic ones could do some damage or harm the fish it's better to get the real one because it would be harmless and clean up all the poop step 5 when your done acclimating your fish take a net to scoop it out of it's bag or container the water in the bag or container your fish was in is very dirty and could get your fish sick, also let your tank run for at least a day so that it is fully clean for your new fish, make sure u get the supplies when your getting your new fish so that your prepared

there's a lot of haters posting on this video. Its rude. They bought the beta for their little girl, not for themselves, they are simply teaching her. and to be honest i feed my beta about 4-5 pellets if he is hungry he will eat them! I don't over feed him, he is quiet the most happy & active little beta i have ever seen. so why don't you haters get a life and grow up instead of making rude comments on a video about a little girl and her new fish?? And btw Bread is really bad for fish so whoever told you that bread is ok..no it isnt. thats why at some parks it says dont feed the fish because stuff we eat is harmful to them & will kill them . look it up

people argue more about a stupid fish rather then Clinton trying to take our constitution and flush it down the toilet. Lets keep in mind all of our service men that have paid the Ultimate sacrifice to ensure we can be free. Dont vote for HC. We have much bigger issues right now vs a stupid fish. Please people consider to vote for Trump. He stands for our FREE rights. Hillary will take an OATH to our Constitution and then INSTANTLY infringe our rights with all types of New gun laws and now that she can win since the death of one of the greatest people in favor of our rights is gone. Please understand that GUN LAWS WONT WORK!!! IF they did Chicago would be the safest place on the earth since they have the most strict laws in the USA.

I know this is an old video and such, but I'm going to share what knowledge I have on bettas. They need at least 2.5 gallons, I personally recommend a 5 gallon minimum because heaters designed for really small tanks are awfully designed. Larger tanks is also less work in the long run, whereas a small tank like that would require a DAILY water change, bigger tanks can have a 20% water change once a week. Bettas are tropical fish and require warmer temperatures so they don't get sick. When feeding a betta it's best to soak the food for a bit, as a lot of food tends to expand when in water which could lead to digestive problems. Bettas also don't like bright colors, I'd recommend aquarium sand or stones. If you want a colorful tank I'd look into some live plants. Speaking of decorations it's VERY important to make sure that they don't have sharp edges that can tear a betta's fins. Bettas like to have places to hide as well. Bettas may be found in puddles in the dry season, but they live in large rice fields where the plants provide natural filtration. The betta will attempt to jump to a larger body of water, if it doesn't it dies. Also a filter is recommended to keep the tank cleaner and get rid of a lot of waste. When putting a betta in a new tank you must acclimate them to the new water's temperature before you put them in. The new water must be dechlorinated as well, if not that will harm the fish. Regarding tank mates snails and shrimp seem to be the best bet, but I wouldn't recommend trying to get any brightly colored or long finned fish-like goldfish-and trying to add them to a betta tank. That will end in a stressed betta and possibly injuries. Or death. ALWAYS research any possible new pets. Fish are NOT decorations.

+PC Betts Did you even read what I wrote, by the way? Or are you all ruffled up and mad because someone who knows more than you do is saying that what you think is wrong? I'm here to educate people who think it's alright to keep bettas in small tanks.

+PC Betts A gallon is far too small, especially with plants and a hideaway-bettas need space to move around in, and the plants provide them with plenty of cover so that they will feel safe, as do the hideaways. I have done plenty of research, you however clearly have not.

Do some research before you go crusading with incorrect information... Most of your spew is WRONG!! Many Betta will stress and DIE in 5 gallon tanks. They feel too exposed. Lots of experienced, caring, and INTELLIGENT folks keep them in a gallon of properly maintained water. This video on the other hand, is an example of how to kill a Betta.

A betta isn't deadly. They're just agressive to their own kind. That's why you do NOT put two males together. If you want to put females together you have to be extremely careful and prepared. It also helps to do lots of research before doing anything with them.

i go to my local aquarium and there are bettas with tanks like other fish, with a filter and such, and they take great care in their fish. and some aquariums have them in the small tanks but i think at least they change the water, so if they don't at least change the water, the fish didn't last long, because then feces will build up ect.

Really Guys?

Okay first of all its the little girls first pet we've all had our first pets and let me tell you this I'm pretty sure your fucking parents didn't spend hundreds of dollars on just one pet especially a fish.

Second its a fish with or without proper tools fish will die of natural causes.

And lastly has it ever occurred to any of you that her parents are teaching her how to be responsible? Notice how they told her she can't do certain things and how what she must do to keep it alive? So what if the fish dies because it lacked a filter, proper food, ect. Like you all are gonna spend a lot of money on just one fish really people? come on now stop picking on the these guys and look at yourselves for once I'm pretty sure you guys have done the same thing at some point whether your pet was a Dog , Cat ,Fish ,Bird or Hamster you've at least bought something that was bad for your pet or didn't know how to take care of it

+End Prince All is forgiven. I'm sorry if I were to seem hostile as well in my previous comment. My Delta Tail, (his name is Dragon) is still living happily in his 1.5 gallon. We might even get him a 10 gallon in a couple months, which I think he would enjoy a lot more than his tank now. XD
End Prince
End Prince - 8 years ago
+David Brown I apologize if I came off as hostile in my previous comments. I've had a lot of time to think it all over and realize now I was being a bit of a dick.
I never said 1 gallons were bad, I temporarily kept a veiltail in one. He was very happy in there and was just as happy as soon as I put him into a 10 gallon.
I personally enjoy seeing them have a lot of space to move and swim around as well as explore so they don't become bored and resort to nipping their own fins and excessive flaring.
Like I said, it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars to give your betta a large space. Around 30 for your tank and equiptment and 20 or less for your decor. At least here in Canada it's pretty cheap if you look for good deals.
Thank you for being civil despite my previous attitude.
David Brown
David Brown - 8 years ago
+End Prince Ok, you have a problem. I have a Delta Tail Betta fish in a 1.5 gallon tank, and he's doing just fine. And don't comment that, "Oh, but their bowl is too small for a Betta!" Well, when I was younger we didn't spend hundreds of dollars for one fish, and I don't think any parent would. We still don't spends hundreds of dollars on a fish, a tank, a filter, a heater, etc. We just have a basic 1.5 gallon tank with a filter. THAT'S IT. And my Betta is doing fine in these conditions. This kid is so young, she doesn't even know how to take care of a fish. And I really don't think the parents would even CONSIDER buying a 3-5 gallon tank or up, and no, I don't think Betta's are "disposible" pets. They prove to be a very good companion for 3-5 years or up if in the right conditions. You don't have to buy a 10 or even 5 gallon tank for one fish to thrive. The lowest you can go is 1 gallon, I'll say that. But I don't think this family was planning to keep the fish for years, I think they just bought it so their daughter could have a pet. Don't get me wrong, I do think it's kind of cruel to put a Betta in a bowl, but you can't tell them how to take care of their fish, or even where to keep it. I'm just saying. All of the Betta lovers/enthusiasts/experts come hate on me now.

+GabbyGameboy That's not even close to spoiling, any singular game device will cost more than that. Chinese take out will cost more than that, 20$ for a decent tank is really really really not that expensive.
BrokenCarillon
BrokenCarillon - 8 years ago
+Kyle De'Larouche Yeah cause every parent should spoil their child
Boa-Noah
Boa-Noah - 8 years ago
I'm sure she'd be more glad if her parents had spent 20$ or so to get a proper tank which she could fully enjoy, a thriving healthy Betta is far more appealing and interesting than a stunted fish lazily sitting in a bowl with nothing to do. Plus that's extra room for mistakes in water care, plants if she wants them, and decorating which is at least part of the fun of having fish and all could be slowly built up as well. It's obvious her parents didn't do the research, which is understandable, but the only responsibility she's going to learn this way is water care and burrying/flushing a beloved pet [assuming she likes the fish.]

I hope next time around they spend a little extra to make both their daughter and her pet happy, Betta are absurdly hardy to be sure but that tiny step further really makes the difference.

+End Prince I understand that it's frustrating because your love for your pet (or pets) go so deep but some families are just very naive. I honestly think they were trying to do a nice, sweet thing for their daughter but obviously did not take the time to do any sort of research. I don't think you should be super harsh on them because they were just trying to do a nice thing with a lack of knowledge.

End Prince
End Prince - 8 years ago
+GabbyGameboy well, you clearly didn't take a minute of your time to completely read my message. again with the responsibility bullshit.
a damn child shouldn't have the 'responsibility' of taking care of a living breathing animal if they don't even know how to use a fucking toilet. by saying "it's just a fish" you're implying it's not worth the effort, thus you're saying they're 'disposable' animals.
it's pretty obvious you don't care about the well being of the fish itself, only whether or not the kid is getting a good life lesson at the cost of the fish's life. good job, you're probably a kid yourself who doesn't know jack about what they're talking about.
BrokenCarillon
BrokenCarillon - 8 years ago
+End Prince You do realize its a kid with a responsibility right? go back to being a kid and try spending your own money on just one tiny fish I never said fish are disposable.
End Prince
End Prince - 8 years ago
+GabbyGameboy see, you're the kind of person who thinks fish are 'disposable' pets.

MANY people, myself included, have spent a lot of money making sure our pets are thriving, not surviving. in great conditions i've met people who had bettas live up to 5-10 years. when you give them the conditions they need, their true colors shine through. my little Jerry has a whole 10 gallon all to himself and spends no time sitting around when there's so much to look at and enjoy and gets nothing but the best food and equipment. it's worth the investment and enjoyment of making a small life better.

that said, it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars to get the fucking bare basics of betta care. simple filter? $20. Simple heater? $15. A 10 gallon? $10. There you fucking go, just a little bit more expensive than getting useless bowl with some clown puke colors cause "oooh it's pretty!". even decor is simple. a bag of pool filter sand is $12 and plastic plants aren't more than $10 usually and you can go out and get your own AQ safe rocks from the damn park.

a betta cramped in a bowl with a sharp plastic plant and nothing new to look at and explore is going to be a sad fucking betta that sits at the bottom all day doing jack shit and end up suffocating and burning from lack of properly treated water and ammonia build-up or over-feeding leading to life threatening obesity.
don't fucking buy an animal if you're not going to research how to take care of it you dense fuck. every life matters. and don't fucking start about "oh it's to show her how to be responsible!" they can fucking do that without killing a damn fish in the process. they over-fed the poor thing on the first go.
