DOLLAR STORE FISH TANK - How to Make a Complete Betta Aquarium for Less Than $15

This is a DIY guide to setting up a cheap home suitable for a betta fish using common items from the dollar store etc. This is intended as a last-resort alternative for people who can't afford large tanks to have an appropriate home for their fish while still spending as little money as possible. These items were all found at my local Dollar Tree/Walmart/Target stores and thru Craigslist, but I'm sure people outside of the USA can find similar items for an equally low price. SUPPLIES USED -5 gallon plastic* storage tote (or 2.5+ gallon bucket) -Plastic* water bottle -Plastic sponges/pot scrubbies -Gravel/pebbles -Plastic drinking straws -Silk fabric flowered lei -LED clip-on light (optional) -Airline tubing -Small aquarium air pump -Airstone (optional) -Aquarium heater (optional if your room temperature stays consistently 80 degrees F) -Small terra cotta flower pot (optional) -Small plastic or silk aquarium plants (optional) Things not included in the cost which you will still need to care for your fish: -food -water conditioner -a thermometer -a water test kit -a siphon or turkey baster to clean the tank floor and do water changes Other optional items: -enough gravel to use as a tank substrate -live aquatic plants like java fern/moss or anubias etc -live terrestrial plants like pothos or lucky bamboo whose roots can be suspended in the water to help remove nitrates OR, IF YOU WANT A PROFESSIONAL TANK SETUP FOR CHEAP, check local classified ads or sale/trade apps for used tanks and equipment at a low price, watch chain pet stores for sales on complete 5.5 or 10 gallon starter kits (I've found them as low as $20) and watch for the Dollar Per Gallon sales at Petsmart and Petco. Thanks for watching and I know I have like two subscribers but lmk if you want more fish/pet videos or have any questions lmao :) *NOTE: make sure the plastic you use (including the water bottle) is a food-safe polyethylene or polypropylene (recycling numbers 2, 4, or 5) so it won't leach chemicals into the water over time. This video is intended as a low cost alternative to people who can't get their fish a better home, but my intention for it is still a more temporary rather than permanent setup. It would be best not to use plastics like this to hold water for longer than 6 months because it could begin to break down and stress crack, but you could replace the storage container with a new one, or reinforce it like you would a larger container to keep it from bending. Thanks so much for 100k views omg! Remember to turn on annotations and read the full description - it might clear up some things you have questions about. :) I'm super glad this vid could be useful to some people, and please tell me if you want more videos about anything specific/fish/diy related since I mostly just post random stuff on my channel now lmao
Edit: for a video of how to clean/maintain the diy filter featured in this video look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq6rkWJR1og

iAM Mystkn I hope you do realize that aside from the actual bin itself, if you are willing to invest a little bit more money into the setup you can always replace the plastic plants with live ones and upgrade the light to encourage plant growth. This is a very adaptable tank setup that can work for many different preferences

Shirley Ward you should change the water once a week
Shirley Ward
Shirley Ward - 7 years ago
Sorry, I asked the wrong question. How often should I change the water and what amounts?
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
Shirley, you can get a gravel vacuum/siphon tube from a pet store to siphon out the old water and waste from the tank, or if you don't have that option it may be easier to use a (clean unused) turkey baster to suck out waste and debris from the bottom of the tank and then just use cups to remove the remaining water you need to take out for your water change
Shirley Ward
Shirley Ward - 7 years ago
Miranda, how do you water changes in this tank. Thanks!

Chloe Jackson Actually I rescued a betta from someone who literally kept him in an inch of brown filthy water in a Tupperware container, and honestly didn't even have any kind of betta food in his house. He was purposely starving the fish to death. So I took him. But a large and unexpected medical bill meant I didn't have $100+ for new tank/stand/filter/heater/gravel/decorations/medication for his numerous health problems/safestart for a fish-in cycle/extra test kit for daily testing because of the fish-in cycle/extra water conditioner for daily water changes/etc.

So I frantically looked for alternatives and found this. Because "people like her" thought to post it.

But I guess I should've just left the fish there, right? Severely emaciated, atrophied muscles, popeye in both eyes, the most severe fin rot I'd ever seen in person, red and inflamed gills, difficulty breathing, velvet, and ick, he was totally better off there than with someone who couldn't afford a proper set up for him.

Maybe I'm the weird one, but I'm actually not hugely cool with animal abuse. I mean, some people are, and if you're okay with it, that's your thing, I guess, but maybe don't condemn people who offer viable alternatives for those who want to care for fish AND eat at least every other day.

You know, just a thought.

Miranda Pelletier wow I hate how people like you think that's it's ok to get a fish even when you don't have the proper set up for it just stop.

iAM Mystkn Also what do you mean by it does not matter if a sponge filter was used? Sponge filters work extremely well and it's a package of bio and mechanical filtration.
Cardea
Cardea - 7 years ago
iAM Mystkn Throw in some substrate and some better looking decor and the tank would do and look better, as well as have a better established bio filtration.
Cardea
Cardea - 7 years ago
iAM Mystkn People leave betta in round bowls, and tanks below 5 gallons. This plastic container is way more than the little amounts of water most people put bettas in.

iAM Mystkn Plus, you can make a simple trickle filter with a drawer and a small pump, and the pot scrubbies have more surface area than plastic bio balls.

krankenheim13
krankenheim13 - 7 years ago
I don't "need" to do anything. Get your head screwed on right. This isn't a suitable home for a betta fish, period. If you can't figure that on your own, using the same resources you've used to post your comment, then you might want to get off the internet.

Actually this is a very basic air driven sponge filter. They are quite common in fish husbandry. The air bubbles rising through the bottle pull water through, allowing nitrifying bacteria to colonize the plastic sponge mesh and gravel. Also, 2.5 gallon tanks with the necessary filter and heater is gonna cost you way more than $15. Secondly, betta fish feel much more secure when they have access to plentiful hiding spots. Learn more at reddit.com/bettafish
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
+iAM Mystkn 1. this is designed for betta fish who like clutter and many hiding places, but if it looks too full you can simply not include as many plants 2. the way the air-driven filter works was explained in the video: as the air bubbles float up and out the top of the bottle, water is pulled through the bottom and filtered through the gravel and plastic filter media (the beads and pot scrubber sponge provide a porous oxygenated surface area for nitrifying bacteria to grow on and break down wastes like ammonia as the water passes over them) - this is the same process as in any commercial air-driven sponge filter :) 3. this video is not monetized nor will it ever be and I don't see the logic in spending 15$ for a glass tank half the size of the one used in the video that doesn't include a filter or heater which are also necessities to keeping a betta fish, but I appreciate your suggestion
Mystkn1k
Mystkn1k - 7 years ago
Miranda Pelletier 1. there is too many damn items in the "tank" 2. the little makeshift "filter" you made doesnt even filter water. i just produces air. Now take the money you made off this video and buy a 2.5gallon tank for 15$
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
krankenheim13 how so? what are your concerns? this has significantly more space than the cups they're sold in at stores, as well as heat and filtration which are necessities to keep them healthy so i don't see how it is cruel? but if you would explain how i can improve it that may be helpful to everyone reading this :)
Shirley Ward
Shirley Ward - 7 years ago

What a brilliant video, and the end result actually looked a lot nicer then expected! Just goes to show there is no excuse for not providing proper care for your fish. You can even get some glass tanks free or super cheap second hand via websites like craigslist or gumtree. I bought a Fluval Spec V (5 gallon) with nano heater and decor (just had to buy new ceramic media for about £3) locally via Facebook Marketplace for £25 (£28 incl. media, $37 in US dollars). All this for a very nice tank for my betta to live (had to find him his own home as he was being bullied in community tank) and is very cheap. I would have followed this video if I was seriously low in cash at the time I had to take him out and looked for a good second hand tank. Its all out there, theres no excuses!

I have a 1.5 gallon (i know, its a little small, i didn't know the minimum tank size for bettas, and the pet store claimed it was a tank for bettas, i now know its not fully suitable) but he's doing just fine. People say that in small tanks their not thriving, but im sure my betta is. He shows all the attributes of a "thriving" betta. Hes always swimming around the tank showing off his fins by turning often, and never doesn't eat his food. My sister's on the other hand, i think she was killing it. She had the exact same tank as me, but obviously never cleaned it. The water was murky, and the poor thing was in total darkness. I ended up cleaning out the tank, and put it in my room with my other betta so she would have some light. I put in a moss ball, and some dwarf water lettuce, and finally her fins are un-clamped. Im just hoping im giving hers a better life too.

Hey just as a warning, the plastic storage tubs you use should only be food-grade. BPA free and FDA approved. If it's not, the plastic can slowly leech toxins and chemicals into the water, causing various illnesses in your fish.
Rebecca kent
Rebecca kent - 7 years ago
We temporarily had our fish in a plastic tub like that. They got weird spots over them when I told the pet shop they said I'd poisoned them with the plastic as it's got toxic chemicals in they died a slow and painful death even tho it was a temp for two weeks and they went back into glass the damage was done. So this is not safe

My daughter received a Betta for her 2 yrs birthday with a ez care marina 0,7 gallon. He was looking so bored in that tiny tank. I did the same as you're videos with a 5 gallons plastic tank. Now i'm waiting for the cycle to be done :-)
I also removed the deco after one week to plants anubias nana, anubias barteri, lemna minor, bacopa, marimo and one that was supposed to be java fern but since i'm a newbie the seller told me it was java fern but i think it's the african sword plant ;-) I also bought a led light clip lamp for the plant ( 36 white and 12 blue )
I can't wait to put the betta in it lol
Thank you so much again and have a great day :-)

Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
if you didn't turn off the air pump that's probably just the sound of the air running through the filter without water in it, but no worries, with an air driven filter you don't need to turn it off before doing a water change like you would with a submerged power filter cause there's no danger of the pump/motor running dry since it's just powered by air movement :)

Can this be used as a betta breeding tank? And can someone tell me how to make a filter without bubbles!
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
no, a betta breeding tank needs to be much bigger and longer with plenty of space for the breeding fish to get away from each other once they're done mating so they don't fight, and you should never breed any fish unless you are 100% prepared and already have ample space to comfortably house all the babies and separate them when they need to be. if you have all the necessary supplies to commit to breeding though you could use a similar setup to this, just with a 20 gallon long plastic container instead. not sure what you mean by a filter without bubbles, but if you don't wan't to use an air pump to power the diy bottle filter you could use a powerhead :)

I used to buy 10 gallon glass tanks from Walmart for 10 dollars. Now it seems they are going for less than 15 dollars. Then I would split the tank with a divider and place the filter in the middle so if flowed on both sides. Then I would buy a couple plexi glass from Home Depot for about 4 dollars total for making the lid. Great little set up for a couple male bettas. Really enjoyed your diy filter system. Miranda Pelletier I like how you added the air stone for more flow, but I've tried this method when I started and it didn't work as well as a Fluval. But I see what you mean. :)
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
Wonderful Dollies diy filters arent all untrustworthy, often times they can be more efficient than standard filters because you can customise it with more filter media than usual thus providing more surface area for nitrifying bacteria to grow on :) but if youre worried the simple air pump wont cause enough water flow for adequate filtration you can always diy with a powerhead instead, it'll just cost a lil bit more ;)

Svartr

I think the premise of the video is fine. While pet stores continue to market bettas as an impulse buy and give new owners misleading information about their basic requirements, it can be really easy to suddenly have a betta without a suitable home. Some people may be entirely clueless about fish ownership and it's only in their research after the fact that they realise they now need to spend $100 for a basic glass aquarium set-up after being assured by the original pet store that the $15 acrylic 1 gallon cube with no heater or filter is adequate (based on local Canadian pricing). So setting up a temporary plastic tote set-up may be a good idea while someone gets the funds necessary to purchase a proper aquarium. People should not be shamed for not knowing and buying a quick impulse pet, which again is EXACTLY how pet stores market bettas.

Personally, my first betta was rescued after learning his previous owner was keeping him in the store cup for a few weeks without frequent water changes or using a water conditioner. Funds were really tight, so I could only afford a 1 gallon betta acrylic cube before being able to purchase a 10 gallon glass aquarium. My second betta was a pure impulse buy (yep, I got sucked in). Couldn't put him in the 10 gallon, so he's in the 1 gallon acrylic cube but with a DIY filter and ambient temperatures keeps his water at 76-78F. His water parameters keep steady at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 10-15 nitrate so asides from having little swimming space, he's actually in pretty good condition and much healthier than my first betta. With a bit more experience behind me, I'm confident he'll be fine where he is until I get my newly acquired 20 gallon aquarium set up.

Just sharing for those who immediately judge others without knowing the full story of why someone may have a betta, but why they may not have a minimum 2.5 or 10 gallon (depending on who you ask) aquarium yet. This video is great for those who want something better than a bowl before they can transition to a proper set-up. Also sharing for those who don't think a 1 gallon can be cycled and maintain decent water parameters because that can definitely happen. I wasn't expecting to buy my second betta at all but even if he's not in the perfect home yet, his 1 gallon cycled cube is WAY better than the cup he was in at the pet store which was spiking ammonia at 8ppm.

Grimalkin Felidae
Grimalkin Felidae - 7 years ago
I think that if someone can't provide the proper care for an animal they shouldn't own it. Storage tubs are fine as long as they're big enough and properly cleaned before cycling. I have a 15gal storage tub with a betta and some tetras (sponge filter and heater too -- adds a bit more to the cost but not that much). Works fine for me and doesn't honestly look that bad.
So glad you recommend 5gal! Bettas ideally should have at least 5gal.

I don't recommend this for larger fish like goldfish, though. You'll be hard pressed to find a 20gal tub to suit one fancy goldfish or 40gal for a common. Best to save up and buy a proper tank plus filters and whatnot, or don't own a goldfish.

can you use this for Turtles?
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
you could use the same idea (using a plastic tub instead of a glass tank) but most turtles get very large and messy and need huge tanks so you would need one of the large 55+ gallon rubbermaid tubs and a bigger filter as just the air powered filter won't be enough to handle the massive bioload a turtle puts out. I actually made a video showing what I did to make a similar diy bottle filter for my turtle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB87wuuRWZs) so you could use that idea for a filter if you have a large enough tub to safely house a turtle

It's a very great idea for people who don't wanna/can't spend that much money on their fish.
But honestly, don't get a pet if you can't provide it with proper living conditions. Its life is your responsibility and if you're not willing to get the necessary utensils, then don't get a fish.
What you offer them is their whole life, they depend on you. So please, do your research before you get any living creature to move in with you!

My dad's fish tank started leaking while I was at school today, and when I got home most of the water had leaked out. The only other container we have for the fish is a goldfish bowl that's ramping up our catfish's anxiety!! Since the bowl doesn't have a heater, one of the fish has started dying! My dad refuses to get a new tank, since we only have two little fish, but I want to at least try to keep them alive (even though I don't have the money to replace everything). This was one of the first and best videos that came up when I googled "homemade fish tank", and it doesn't require complicated stuff like silicone sealant or glass panels - so I'm going to try to use this to save my family's fish! Thank you very much!!
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
i'm so glad it could help! :) if you can find where your big tank is leaking you can reseal it yourself while the fish stay in a container like this temporarily, you can get some sealant cheap at walmart too (GE 100% silicone 1 is safe, make sure you don't get anything besides 100% silicone that does NOT have 'mold protection' or any anti mold additives and it will be fine to use for fish) just resealing a tank is easier than it seems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3nNJ0PRhB0 this is a good video if youre interested in doing that :)

and an internal filter for $10 https://www.petsmart.com/fish/filters-and-pumps/aqueon-quietflow-internal-power-filter-44839.html?cgid=300202

yeah, i'll try to make a video like that in the future if i can remember! good idea! i know it can be sad to see fish not cared for at walmart but i personally would be against buying fish from them because when you purchase the fish it's just another item being sold in their point of view, and they will just bring in other fish to replace them if they see they are selling well and then more fish are just left to suffer. i think boycotting walmart and complaining to the higher ups is the best thing you can do to stop them from mistreating fish, but if you do get a fish from there that is not in good condition i would complain and ask to adopt it at a discount so that way you're not giving them profit to just keep doing the same thing <3

Any recommendations on small pets to own? I live in a shitty 700 square feet apt with 1 bedroom with parents. I really want a little friend because no one is ever home in the morning/day and I am a lame person who never leaves the house. ):

I have a part-time but its graveyard hours. Other than that I am home all day. I can't afford much but my neighbor gave away a small bird cage and a 2.5 fish bowl. I was thinking of getting a pet rat but my parents hate that animal the most. Also my Dad can be loud and rowdy at night. I thought having a small fish would be nice. It's got some zen to it and it makes me feel relaxed. I also enjoy staring at fish for hours.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
Fish are great, and I totally relate to your situation. if you want something that won't disturb your parents I don't think a bird would be a good option. I love rats too but they also need a lot of attention and space (also if you do get rats in the future it's best to get a pair because they need companions)
I think a betta would be a great option for your 2.5 gal bowl as long as it has filtration and heat. Nothing else can really fit in a space that small. Or if you like reptiles a leopard gecko or crested gecko would be great. They can live in a 10 gallon tank (preferably 20 or larger though) and are easy to care for, you just need to research what they need of course :)

Dollar Stores and the like sell these plastic containers super cheap because they are made with the cheapest and most toxic materials. BPA safe is always best... I believe certain numbers on the bottom of plastic containers also determine which are safe and which are not. A larger glass bowl is much better than this set up, with a living plant. It's closer to their natural habitat. Some pet stores have $1/gallon sale. We bought a 29 gallon fish tank for $29 and a 15 gallon tank for $15! If you can't afford a simple, smaller scale set-up having a 10 gallon tank or smaller, you have no business even getting a betta or any other type of fish!! They cost money! Electricity, food, filtration changing/replacements, water for water changes, chemicals to check the levels in the tank, medicine if any of the fish get ich/fin rot etc. I have 4 tanks. Bettas, cichlids, plecos, cat fish, snails and more. Not an expert, but know that this "DIY" set up for fish is horrible and spending another $5-$10 gets you everything you need, brand new. Craigslist, yard sales and local FB pages you can find bigger set ups selling for even cheaper. Don't mean to pop anyones bubble. Any true fish hobbiest would not approve of this. http://www.petsmart.com/fish/supplies/aquariums-and-stands/top-fin-3.5-gallon-enchant-aquarium-38392.html?cgid=300013 There were many more options in the store. Here is one for $29.99, 3.5 gallons with EVERYTHING included. Minus plants, stones and accessories. You can go to the beach/lake/creek/your driveway (or a neighbors) and get a few handfuls of stones wash them thoroughly, boil them and whala. Find some ceramic cups that aren't being used or figurines and place them inside until you can buy what you want. Even logs at the beach/lake/creek can be boiled/oven baked, then added for a natural look with bigger rocks that were boiled/cooked. Make sure the logs sink! Bam... A beautiful set up for a reasonable price.

yep, i specified in the description and annotations which types of plastic to use and the container in this video is bpa free :) i do agree with the rest of your comment that it's better to just spend a little extra on a starter kit and to never buy a fish unless you already have a proper setup but this video was made to at least give an option to the people who weren't prepared, as a way to improve the lives of their fish until they can afford/find a proper tank. a larger glass bowl would not be better than this setup unless it also has a filter

Everything about this perfect except the tub. Bucket will have no issues but those clear plastic tubs might need some reinforcement around the rim. Shop with that in mind when choosing a tub. Some might be too cheap to use. That much water weight will bow the sides out. Love this idea though. Gonna do somthing like this.

this is really cool, but it should be a short temporary home, and definitely not a permanent one. it should only be used as possibly a quarantine, or a holding tank. you could temporarily put your beta in this while you go and get proper equipment. anyway, in short, do NOT use this as a forever home, temporary only.

Miranda Pelletier

the airline tubing is connected to the air pump at one end and inserted into the gravel in the filter on the other end. the tubing itself isnt what creates the suction, the air being pushed out of the tubing and bubbling up to the surface through the top holes in the bottle is what makes the water flow toward the filter and up through the filter media as it follows the air bubbles

so sad... if you can't afford the proper equipment and proper items for any animal you shouldn't have it.... we have a responsibility... we take them from they're natural habitat and they can't do anything for themselves after that, it's our duty as pet owners to make sure they're living conditions are as close as they can possibly be if they were in wild. stuff like this makes me sad... yeah they'll live for a little but not long, and not happy... if they don't have the proper conditions. people need to start doing they're research before getting any living creature...

AWESOME and a great project for my grandchildren to do with me. I noticed the complaints in the comments and don't they know that PLASTIC fish tanks are also SOLD and PETCO and other pet stores? The best way to make sure that you don't "poison" your Betta is to CLEAN the plastic first with a vinegar wash and a good rinse. I have a "plastic" tank my son bought at Wal Mat 3 yrs ago and it works fine. We used a vinegar (just vinegar first) and rinsed it about 4 times with HOT water and it is perfect. Too many people think the items you used are "toxic" for your betta but hey try it before you JUDGE it. Again thank you for this AWESOME idea. Much love and respect. :)

At 3:50, I see the bubbles inside the bottle. However, is it escaping more through the top hole (where the tubing comes in), or through the sides, where the top of the bottle is squeezed into the bottom of the bottle? (Since I think there was not any adhesive that was added, the top just slides into the bottom, right?
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
yeah that was my bad squeezing the bottle a little too much when connecting the top to the bottom so it bent and left a tiny space where the air occasionally bubbled through. where you see it coming out the top though is the slits in the top part of the bottle (covered by the pot scrubbie so the water/air moves through it before exiting). the hole in the cap where the tube in inserted is completely airtight. but youre correct there is not any adhesive used in this at all

Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
that's still pretty small, imo the only thing you should keep in there is one betta or a small group of 3-4 guppies. for goldfish, adults need about 80L per fish for the short bodied fancy types, and around 265L for common/comet goldfish. if they're babies you could keep them in something smaller if it's only temporary and you're going to get a bigger tank as they grow but if you haven't gotten any fish yet I personally would not suggest having any goldfish unless you can make a bigger tank for them as they get larger than most people think :)

It's also cheap I like that especially since I have a tight budget great video and tank. I have a question though can I just use straws instead of the plastic separators on the lei in the bottle filter.
I can't seem to find a lei anywhere since it's winter over here I was gonna buy silk plants and put them in there. Anyways my beta's are super happy in their new tanks {Thank you <3}

My local Walmart sells tanks for no more than 10 to 20 bucks and they sell decor, filters, heaters, food, and anything else you need for a fish and it should come to around $35. I'm sorry if this doesn't meet your criteria, but there is no one true way to keep a fish. Have you heard of container ponds? This is the same concept. The author of this video did plenty of research and spoke with other hobbyists before publishing. The intent was to help people who had fish in bowls upgrade to a more desirable situation easily. But perhaps you would rather they flush their fish than have them use a method already proven effective for indoor ponds and hospital tanks.

As a fish keeper I think this is a cute idea but I wouldn't recommend keeping a Betta here forever maybe just temporary as you get a 10 gallon or more aquarium, and if you can't afford it then don't keep fish. I know Petco has a dollar per gallon sale once in awhile ( for example a 55 gallon is 55 dollars and a 10 gallon is 10 dollars ) and PetSmart has ¢99 plants for smaller aquariums if your just starting to get into the hobby , and I'm aware that some places don't have Petco and PetSmart but if you do your research there are some types of silicone that you can use and make your own plants . I wouldn't recommend just adding random things into the aquarium ether like in the video , some items will be dangerous to your fish so washing plants , rocks , or drift wood is very important if your going for a planted aquarium like I have . Don't over stock your aquarium ether , and if you work , work hard to provide the best for your fish. videos like these are cool to watch don't get me wrong but really this is not a good forever home for a Betta or any fish .

how is it animal cruelty if the animal has adequate space and filtration? the point of this video is to avoid animal cruelty by steering people away from keeping their fish in unfiltered bowls and into something, though obviously not ideal, more suitable for fish care temporarily. but this setup was made just for the demonstration, i don't actually keep any of my fish in it :)

Maybe i could only get a 9 gallon because I still live with my parents and i have a tiny bedroom for everything I own and dont have the space for a 20 gallon tank. Seriously, my room is a tin y cube, the single bed takes up half of it, then my tiny computer table goes right up to the other wall. All the space I had was my bedside table...

So i have 10 gallon tank and i was wondering if this filter would be okay for it. It's a quarantine tank and so it's temporary till i can move him back to his own tank which is also 10 gallon. Also i want to know which plastic would be safe for as plastic can be deadly too. Just so there no panicking his in the tank cause he rip his fins and i didn't want them to get infected so his have an aquarium salt bath which i can't do in the other tank cause it has live plants in it.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
this kind of filter should be okay but you might want to use more filter media inside the bottle or use a stronger air pump for better circulation through the tank. if it's only temporary like you said then a normal water bottle should be fine like in the video :) just make sure when you poke the holes it doesnt leave sharp edges since you're worried about his fins

also just another tip from my experience, if you don't want to do salt baths you could try baths in methylene blue, it really helps disinfect fins and heal them as long as you keep up with the tank water being super clean and all. it does harm nitrifying bacteria too though so you should just like take him out and give him a bath in a cup once a day instead of using it the main tank if you want to keep the filter cycled

I'm really not sure how much fish brains are psychologically-affected by the amount of space they have; definitely not in the way humans are. Some scientists believe fish don't even feel pain as humans do. If this is the case, it wouldn't really matter, but we're not quite sure yet.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
the point of this project is less about the physical space though and more about having a large enough water column to maintain a stable nitrogen cycle so that the fish can stay healthy and not be affected by the ammonia their own waste produces, which is unhealthy and harmful to them regardless of whether they are able to process pain in the same way as humans (and even if they aren't they still deserve to be treated with respect and adequate care like any other creature) :)

you have a very good point, and this video isnt intended as a way to cut corners on the initial setup, it's meant as a temporary alternative to get fish out of bowls where their humans would otherwise neglect them due to cost constraints or any other excuse. for that reason i'm favoring water volume and filtration capacity over professionality and long term material quality. more expensive is not always necessarily better; a five gallon filtered tub is a lot easier to maintain stable water chemistry in than a 1.5 gallon tank kit of any kind, especially for beginners or people who may not be the most educated/diligent in fish care, as is the target audience of my video

but i agree that people should always go for investing in a getting proper aquarium set up before even considering bringing fish home and i highly recommend doing so. unfortunately that is not always the case though so thats why i made this video, to help the people who sadly skipped that first step

I love this. My mom surprised me with a betta fish that she'd won from a raffle at work. He came in a bowl and unfortunately my ten gallon aquarium is being used to house some land dwellers right now. But I saw this video and this combined with the fact that I already had most of the stuff to create this set up really made my day and my betta who I've had for four days now is much more out going than he was in his bowl. love the bottle filter and was so excited to have an excuse to make one. So glad this video is around for people who get surprised with a new pet and people who can't get a "real tank" right away.

unfortunately there are still a lot of common misconceptions about fishes' care needs, and like emma said most pet stores just want to make money however they can. all fish need filtered tanks to keep them healthy and prevent waste from building up in the water and harming them. if you have your fish in a bowl i recommend you do daily water changes

M 560
M 560 - 7 years ago
MissHarleyQuinn Sure that can happen, but then you will provide an alternative and put your pets needs above your own. Which might mean selling them or giving them away. If you have a dog and suddenly you can only walk 50 metres you would find a better suitable home for it. Even if it may break your heart, it will probably break your heart even more to see it suffer. That's called empathy, look it up ;)

MadiferCat
MadiferCat - 7 years ago
MissHarleyQuinn That's extremely irresponsible of you. I get that you love fish but to give them a good life they really need a heater and a filter and more room than a bowl.

Making nests doesn't mean a betta is healthy or thriving and breeding them and giving them to children is only going to end up with most of those fish being abused and dying. Fish don't deserve that just because they're fish.
M 560
M 560 - 7 years ago
MissHarleyQuinn A lot of people think this way and I thought this way for a while, but when you realize fish are supposed to live for quite some years more than 'regular people' have them for, you can see how heaters and filters can definitely benefit them.

Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 7 years ago
yep the filter would work for a 10 gallon too but i'd recommend using a slightly bigger bottle or more filter media. if you don't already have a fish though i would wait until you're able to just get another proper 10 gal (a lot of chain stores will have them on sale for a dollar per gallon sometimes)

Honestly, this is such a terrible idea for a number of reasons.
1. This goes for all fish - you should NEVER decorate their tank with any ornaments that aren't specifically made for aquarium use. There are chemicals, oils, dust, and other residue that reside in plastic and ceramic objects (like the plastic water bottle, the pot, and the lei flowers). These elements can dissolve in water and leech unwanted chemicals that your fish will breathe. Buying ornaments that are already fish-friendly will ensure that your pet doesn't breathe in anything unsafe. Also, keeping a fish in a plastic bin is an extremely bad idea! Unless it was specifically made for aquatic use, sealants and other primers used in the plastic will wear off from the bin over time and dilute throughout the water which will slowly poison your animal. Honestly, I thought all of this was common sense, but I guess you thought it was okay to put a Hawaiian lei from a DOLLAR STORE in a plastic bin and call it a "tank".
2. If someone doesn't have enough money to properly care for and house the fish to fit its needs, they should NOT OWN A FISH. Buying a fish and sticking it in a plastic bin is a not only dangerous to the fish's health in a number of ways, but it's a selfish thing to do because you're only thinking of what you want and not about the animal's wellbeing. If you only have $15 in your wallet, you have no business owning a fish. Bettas need a proper tank, at least 2.5 gallons, made of PET FRIENDLY plastic/acrylic/glass, not some storage container you could barely afford from the dollar store. In addition, they need gravel and PET SAFE plant coverage, in addition to proper filtration (not a plastic water bottle stuffed with kitchen sponges).
3. DIY projects DO NOT WORK FOR YOUR FISH!!!!! You can make a stuffed toy for your guinea pig, or sew a blanket for your dog, but fish LIVE AND BREATHE in the conditions you provide for them. It should clear to anyone that this should never be acceptable for any kind of fish. Even though they are small creatures, doing the bare minimum for their habitat is cruel and if you're going to accept the responsibility of owning a pet, you need to acknowledge the financial aspect of care as well. You wouldn't buy a cat, and fill up a cardboard box with dirt from outside in place of a litter box. You wouldn't buy a bird and feed it leaves and berries from your backyard instead of formulated bird food. Why would you do the same for a fish?
The idea might have seemed cute or fun at the time, but if you care about your fish and want it to thrive, I would NEVER suggest introducing it to a setup like this.
Svartr
Svartr - 7 years ago
DIY filters absolutely work - mine keeps my water parameters at a steady 0 Ammonia, 0 nitrite and 10-15 nitrate in addition to keeping the water clear. Oh, and commercially available filters (housing) are made out of... PLASTIC! Of course it's up to the fish enthusiast to research & decide which plastic is best to use for their aquarium projects.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 7 years ago
if it's a hard plastic it doesn't leach anything and storage bins can let you get more bang for your buck.plus it does come with some benefits to the fish like the fact it isn't completely clear so the betta doesn't fight with it self as much and you can get a tank that is much wider but much shallower so you can provide more swimming space pre the gallon.the filter diy works better then your store bought filter cause it has more surface area providing much better filtration compared to a normal store bought filter.there are many people who use kitchen scrubbies as filter meida cause it's cheap doesn't leach anything harmful and provides more surface area then traditional media.

although I wouldn't use random silk plants I have no idea what they are made out of.cause the dyes could be toxic.but really besides that non of this is harmful.

Miranda Pelletier It's a good idea theoretically, I just think the main idea should be encouraging people not to get a fish in the first place if all they can afford is a bowl. Sorry if my comment came of as rude, I didn't intend to be hateful in any way. :) It just really makes me angry to see people get a pet, and then go out of their way to find loopholes to do the bare minimum for the animal's survival.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
I totally agree that you shouldnt cut corners when it comes to safety and that you should never get a fish if you arent prepared to care for them properly and any associated costs for a real setup but unfortunately there are some other people who dont think that way and treat fish like objects and keep them in bowls, and that was the target audience for this video; my intention was to convince those people who claim they 'cant afford' a better setup to still provide their fish a bigger space and filtration in hopes of improving their lives just a bit. The plastics used in this video are food grade and nontoxic and though not ideal, they are VERY unlikely to leach enough toxins to harm any fish, and setups like this using plastic storage bins and flower pots and the diy filter have been tested and proven safe anecdotally by many fish keepers not including myself (though like I said it is still not ideal). My fish dont personally live in a setup like this; my betta has a ten gallon glass tank with gravel/live plants/HOB filter/etc, I really just posted the video to convince some stubborn 'friends' to not cruelly keep their fish in unfiltered tiny bowls :/

actually this kind of filter works better.since you don't have to replace stupid carbon filter cartridges you never have to change the media which means a healthier bacteria colony and there is more surface area for the bacteria to grow.meaning better biological filtration which is what filter mainly do.

also this kind of filer is also low flow which is much better for a betta and young fish.

just cause something cost more or is store bought doesn't make it better.

Sasha_ it's okay if the plastic is a little bit frosted. Betta fish naturally live in water that has a lot of tannins that make it look dark and hard to see so it's not a disaster if the bin isn't exactly clear, although it's preferable because you can see and enjoy your fish better

Is it possible for a tank for a betta to be too big? I dont have a betta right now, but when i did have one i had about a 10 or so gallon tank because it was only a few more dollars then the 5 gallon one, and my petco only had lids for 10+ gallon tanks. Id rather not seperate it for 2 bettas though
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
nope, 10 gal is perfect for a betta! bigger is always better when it comes to fishkeeping; the only way a very large tank might be bad for a betta is if there is a lack of appropriate hiding spaces and decor or if the tank is so tall that it is more difficult for a very heavy-finned fish to swim to the surface. but in a 10 gal you shouldn't have that problem at all and it's a great tank for a single betta :)

really everyone uses a filter for bacteria to grow on to help the nitrogen cycle. fish poop has ammonia, bacteria grow to eat the ammonia and turn it into nitrite, then other bacteria come to eat nitrite and turn it into nitrate! then you do water changes to get rid of the nitrate since nothing comes along to eat it :/
the sponge in the filter is a great place for the bacteria to grow because all the water is pushed though it so they just sit on the sponge and munch away.

you can definitely have no filter and a fish can do just fine if you do frequent water changes. It's just easier to have a filter so that there's less of a chance that your fish will suffocate on its own waste ;;
it also lets you go longer without doing a water change because instead of of the ammonia just building up it turn it into other things so everything is more stable. it's almost like a food chain. :D

Water conditioner removes chlorine and harmful chemicals that cities put into their water to make it "safe" for humans! While us giants can take a lot of those chemicals without dying, most pet fish are small and can't take the same amount that we can. :(

Miranda Pelletier aaaaand every single one of my beta fish have lived a lengthy amount of time with no filter thanks. no signs of stress very friendly. and i disagree about any of this being safe still.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
of course a fish won't produce enough toxins to kill itself overnight but it's about quality of life and preventing unnecessary stress- which living in water with any discernible about of ammonia is, and which, to a lesser extent, daily large volume water changes are. it's better for a fish to live in a cycled tank with zero ammonia and regular partial water changes than it is to live in an unfiltered tank in which water parameters are constantly fluctuating. putting a fish which has never had a filter into a filtered environment can cause some stress if they're not used to having a current in the water, or if the tank is not cycled first before the fish lives in it, but these are temporary stressors and can be easily remedied by baffling the filter flow to create a minimum current or by using a detoxifying water conditioner like prime along with a beneficial bacteria starter and increased water changes while the tank completes a fish-in cycle. i encourage you to please look up the 'aquarium nitrogen cycle' if you don't know what i mean by cycling and beneficial bacteria and all that; it is a very useful thing to research and very important to any fish's health to have a knowledge of how the nitrogen cycle works. :)

all the plastic materials in this video are proven based on their composition to be nontoxic and okay to house fish in, and the other materials like the silk lei and scrubbers etc are fish safe anecdotally at least, as i and others have used them in our own tanks and filters long-term with no problems. with the lei flowers though i would advise to make sure what anyone gets is 100% silk or other fabric though as different stores obviously have different products

Cyrilcynder1 you keep telling me what i think and it pretty hilarious. the fact that you think one fish is going to produce enough toxins to kill itself overnight is hilarious, like i said. ive never had an issue. the real issue here is the NONFISHSAFE products you all are condoning. putting a fish that was never on a filtration system under a filter and you will experience stress.

being captive bred does not change a fish's basic biology and the fact that ammonia buildup from unfiltered water poisons and slowly/painfully kills them. all fish kept in a domestic environment NEED biological filtration to replicate the natural nitrogen cycle in which beneficial nitrifying bacteria convert toxic ammonia into nitrites and then nitrates which are safer and less harmful to fish (but still need to be removed with weekly water changes). without having an established filter, even with daily water changes, small amounts of ammonia can build up and stress the fish.

water conditioner removes chlorine and other things that aren't safe for fish from the water. some water conditioners such as Prime also bind to ammonia/nitrites and temporarily detoxify them as well, which is why it is very important to use a good water conditioner, especially in smaller tanks or ones without a filter because otherwise the fish could be harmed by the fast buildup of their own waste in such a small space.

BEE FACE you can do daily water changes, and yes. You will get so what the same effect. But going around telling people filters are BAD for Bettas or any fish.... That's rude. Filter make it much easier. You still have to do water changes even with a filter, but not every day. Your not being a 'lazy prick' just because you have a filter for your fish tank. If anything, that means you care about them and wanna get them a good quality of water.

I enjoy how much you don't want to listen to anyone and you just want an excuse to be just so fucking angry at someone for no good Damn reason.

BEE FACE now, about the plastic. Maybe. It's from the dollar store. But everything else. No. I dont know who has ever told you that filter are BAD for fish, but uh.... Sweetie..... Please check yourself before you go and absolutely obliterate yourself. When you take a fish. Something that lives in a HUGE BODY OF WATER and put in in a relatively small box, shits gonna start happening unless you take precautions. You need to condition your water first. Cause tap water or litterally any other kind of water has all sorts of nasty minerals in it that WILL hurt your fish. And second, a filter. To provide beneficial bacteria that fish NEED because of their slime coats, and to keep that water from getting all mucky and nasty with your probably shitty nitrate water. Listen, I don't know who told you fish don't need a filter, but the Internet exists for a reason. Read up and learn yourself some shit

Cyrilcynder1 none of my fish are from the places you stated above. they need clean water they dont need a filter. also a heater isnt necessary unless youre housing a fish in an environment thats going to harm them. my beta has been alive for 3.5 years and ive owned many. never had a problem.
Cyrilcynder1
Cyrilcynder1 - 8 years ago
BEE FACE actually yes they should. Betta fish are tropical fish and the water that come from litterally anywhere is not sufficient with ought filtering of some sort. No, what your thinking about (I hope) is a strong current. Which they can't have. But that's very easily solvable with a damper of some kind or using a sponge filter. I do t know who told you that Bettas can't have filters (probably someone from petsmart of petco or walmart) but the truth is betta fish NEED filters, and also heaters. If you don't have a filter for a betta fish, why do you have a fish? Your just killing it slowly

Kay Skywalker

setting up the tank costs the most, up keep costs minimal after that. Where do you get your info from? To feed a betta costs four dollars for a small bag of pellets that is going to last for more then a few months. You feed him four to five pellets a day and there is a lot of pellets in a little bag, Prime you only need a few drops and a container will last a betta tank for months too. cost of upkeep is minimal on a betta tank. I spend way more on a 65 gallon South African tank every 3 to 4 months some where around 60 dollars and upkeep on a betta tank is far less then that. 8.99 on food for two to three months on pellets, 20 dollars on cichlid salt every three to four months. 12.00 dollars on frozen food every 3 months. 15.00 dollars every few months on Prime, but I was cycling a tank so I went though it a little quicker then I normally would. Upkeep on a betta tank would be around 5 to 20 dollars every three to four months. depending on the food you buy, water conditioner, that sort of thing. It's a minimal cost to upkeep a betta tank.
likeastarbaby
likeastarbaby - 7 years ago
there is a difference between trying to save some money and not being able to afford it. my comment still stands - if you cant afford a tank for your animal you cannot afford the upkeep and maintenance costs and therefore you shouldn't be making that type of commitment.

i totally agree! unfortunately i encounter a lot of people who already have fish and come up with every excuse in the book not to get their fish a better home (mostly because of monetary reasons tho) so i made this to show those people that even if you are poor there should be no reason to neglect your fish and condemn them to life in a bowl because it can be cheap to give them adequate space with filtration like all fish need. the setup in the video is still intended to be temporary though, not just a lazy way to keep fish without investing a lot of money or effort
Cassy Gould
Cassy Gould - 8 years ago
Great idea and everything but please do not tell anyone that keeping a water bottle as a filter is acceptable and healthy for a fish. They have expiration dates for a reason and toxins will leak into the "tank". Please refer people to use sponge filters which are actually rather cheap, an extra 3 dollars for one is not that bad. Just please give unexperienced fish keepers correct advice and don't lead them to kill their aquatic pets. Lovely idea though.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
yes, sponge filters are a great idea and also easy to make! if you want a long term plastic so the filter doesn't have the risk of leaching then you can use an HDPE milk/juice bottle instead of a PETE water bottle (which in hindsight i should have done in the video)

+Miranda Pelletier exactly, I'm making a big stink about this because if some idiot doesn't realize that they need to use decorations that are completely fish safe, they will kill their fish, not know why, buy another fish, kill that one, then repeat that until they realize its the makeshift "aquarium" they created for their fish. I've had fish since I could remember and in that time I've since learned a heck of a lot about different fish care, this "Cheap DIY betta aquarium" IS NOT SUITABLE FOR BETTAS. I have a 10 gallon betta aquarium, and guess what? I got it for 15 bucks on Craigslist, with everything in it, I have 5 female betta fish and one male living together in this tank. 3 of my females are 4 years old and are still very healthy because I know what care they need and I've realized how stupid people will try to cut corners and not properly take care of their fish. If they cant afford to buy the proper equipment require to have your fish live a long happy life then they shouldn't buy a batta or any fish in the first place. That's why it says the average betta fish life span is about a year or 2, well that's because the average dumb ass doesn't realize that you cant just buy a fish then not care for it properly. They should do their research and know exactly what the fish requires and how to properly care for it.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
I totally agree, and I recommend looking for stuff actually designed for fish first as well. This video is intended as a last resort for those people who for some reason or other claim to be unable to get an actual aquarium for their fish, so that the fish can have a larger filtered home and better quality of life than being stuck in a bowl. The plastics I used in this demonstration are food grade and not likely to leach toxins and are not a safety problem for the fish, even though, as you said, an actual fish tank and decorations would be much better
SpoopyKitten96
SpoopyKitten96 - 8 years ago
+Miranda Pelletier then go to freaking eBay or craigslist and buy a fish tank that someone is selling that has everything with it.There is better options than putting a fish in a plastic tub. Its not fish safe, in aquariums they use fish safe materials that wont leach toxic chemicals into the water of a fish tank. Plastic tubs and 50 cent plants will kill a fish. Different fish have specific needs and people who don't do their research and are too poor to afford buy a fish bowl a filter and some stones plus a heater depending on the fish and area you live in, shouldn't buy a fish in the first place.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
oh your comment said "plastic flowers" so i thought you thought they were from one of those thin plastic artificial leis instead of fabric. these flowers i used are made out of the same thing as the silk plants you would get for a fish at the pet store though so i don't see how that's any worse. getting a bowl from walmart would not be a better option though as all fish need biological filtration in order to thrive.
SpoopyKitten96
SpoopyKitten96 - 8 years ago

this is a great idea but how do you hook up some of the things like the heater in the back and what is the air pump for and all the other stuff you didn't show us where to put it
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
the heater and pump just plug into a normal wall outlet (don't plug in the heater if it's not submerged though)
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
the air pump is hooked up to the airline tubing which you use in the water bottle filter (the air moving thru it creates suction which drives the water thru the filter media) and the heater can be mounted on the side of the tank (under the water) using a suction cup (which should already be included with the heater if you get it new)
Kelli Anne

Bettas enjoy stillwater more, I would not recommend using a air bubbler or air pump. Their natural environment is very still.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
all fish need biological filtration, even bettas. the air pump here is what drives the homemade filter so that's why it's needed. it doesn't create much of a current but you can make it softer by using a prefilter sponge or additional pot scrubber over the holes in the bottle
Daisy Servera

Today with Kelli Anne though they like still water they still need a filter, just turn them on low. The bubbler isn't great for bettas but pumps are still a must

I don't think a bucket would be good to house a Betta fish... Yes, it'd keep them alive, but it wouldn't make them happy. Betta fish swim in shallow creeks, yes, but they travel for miles upon miles each day. A bucket would only make the fish unhappy.
Now, if it is just for housing the fish until you can afford a new, bigger tank, or can find a bigger tank, then I guess I'm fine with that.

Um....... if you can't afford a good sized tank and if you can't afford to properly take care of an animal, DONT GET IT. This is a HORRIBLE setup for a fish, even a betta. This is just disgusting. All fish deserve PROPER tanks and aquariums. Seriously, if you can't afford a fish and can't afford to properly care for it, do not get one.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
I agree all fish deserve nothing less than a proper home and you shouldn't get any animal if you're not able to care for them, however for the people who unfortunately don't share that mindset I made this video in hopes to somewhat improve the conditions for fish who are kept in tiny bowls/vases because their humans "can't afford" anything better. My own fish are not kept in the type of setup in the video (my betta has a 10 gallon glass tank with a heater/hob filter/gravel/live plants) but if you don't mind me asking, how is this setup in the video disgusting and horrible? It has heating, filtration, and adequate space for the species it is intended for. But I'd love to improve my instructions if you have suggestions

I've used the lei flowers in my tank for quite a while and never had a problem (they're just silk) but if you don't want to use the lei you can just get other decorations cheap, and you don't even have to use the plastic beads from the lei for the filter either, you could just cut up drinking straws and use them for media instead :)
Camryn Chapman
Camryn Chapman - 8 years ago
Either way, that fish isn't being put into the tank until it's cycled, and by then any toxic chemicals should be gone in the water bottle. Plenty of people use the plastic bottle filter trick and have been for years :) The only thing you would have to use the lei necklace for is the filter, but at walmart, some of the decorations go for .99-$2, so that might be a better idea

you really shouldn't get any animals if you aren't able to give them high quality care. even fish cost money. i spent about $200 on my betta fish alone but now he's set for years. it's really better to spend the extra money and get your fish the best possible care.

Actually the size of the tank is big enough
It would be around 10 or more gallons, while the usual minimum for a betta is 5
Many people use plastic bins like this to house goldfish as makeshift indoor goldfish ponds
This may be for wintering (bringing the fish in in the winter in case it's too cold for them) or just for aesthetic reasons
fish are completely fine in these things, provided you get the right size and plastic

+Cookie Cutter You are right about every betta being different. I've had bettas who prefered 5-10 gallons and I've also had bettas who got stressed in large areas and prefered 3 gallons. Though even if a fish prefers smaller spaces, you should still provide at least 2.5 gallons and fill it with decor so it feels smaller to him. This isn't even so much for just what they would be happier in. Small tanks/bowls have a higher risk of ammonia buildup, which will cause severe injuries or death to your fish. That's why larger is better.

DogGoneIt 82 Sorry but you need way more room for your poor fish. A betta needs a minimum of 2.5-5 gallons of water. You can lie to yourself all you want saying he's "happy" but in the end, that's pretty much just bullshit. Hate to be that person who points out other people's wrong doings, but it's just really upsetting and sad when people keep bettas in small containers. Bettas are living animals, not decorations. They deserve room to swim. /:

Just because betta fish have labyrinth organs that allow them to breathe oxygen DOES NOT mean they can live a healthy life in a confined environment. Just because the pet store sells them in cups does not mean that the fish are thriving. Betta are known to "live" in small environments because they are hardier due to their ability to breathe oxygen from the surface, this does not mean that they live naturally in small confined environments. How would you like it if someone shoves you in a two by three foot room and told you "it's enough space to live," And left you there? My point is that betta THRIVE in larger environments because they have room to explore, swim, and behave naturally. You stated you have your betta in something that's not even a gallon in capacity? It cracks ME up that you have the audacity to spout how your fish is "happy and healthy" when you live it confined in a tiny container to live and deny it the room it needs to behave naturally and have ample freedom to swim. Just because a betta can survive in a small environment does not mean they should. Surviving is not thriving, period. You can buy a cheap five gallon glass tank from petsmart for like, 8 bucks. Cheap filters and heaters also exist.

+hurt animal abusers paws You're absolutely right. I agree that Bettas deserve AT LEAST 5.5 gallons each, however my original comment was to "Teach" doggonelt why his Betta cant live in a bowl. Not because of space issues but because of parameter issues.
And besides, "tiny" is a relative term. 10 gallons or less is tiny to me. When I said tiny, I didn't mean 1 gallon, I meant less than 10 :-P

+Miranda Carroll what? Bettas cant be in small tanks. Cats and dogs are domesticated just like most bettas sold in pet stores are, just because your betta is different then the ones in the wild is no excuse to give it the most miserable life. Just like a cat, if a cat cant survive in the wild because its domesticated we wont lock it up in a closet the rest of its life and justify by saying "its not wild, like a tiger" or saying "cats in the wild can survive in small spaces"
A betta still has instinct to protect its fairly large territory, if you place it in a bowl it will likely get stressed because
1. The territory is to small for him to "guard"
2. Bettas are very smart and need mental stimulation
3. It will get dirty to fast
There is SOME things that you want to replicate in your bettas tank that a betta would do in the wild to make them happier, stuff like:
You want a heavily planted tank or a tank with plenty of hideouts
You want them to "work" for their food to keep them busy(have them chase your finger around the tank)
You want to keep the tank fairly clean with a 20% water change every week(i change my water like this for my bettas 5.5 gallon tank)
The tank should be faily warm(even though they arent wild they still orininate from the tropics and their body functions wont work without warm water)
They need a "territory" to guard of at least 3 gallons
^
|

All of that stuff is needed to ensure your betta will be happy and healthy

Miranda Carroll - 7 years ago
hurt animal abusers paws but what about those that have been bred for ages for sell. and just because that's what they do naturally don't mean that's how they are now. that's like saying dogs can live in the wild just fine but some have been bred and can't live in the wild

+Undead Solider 3 bettas in a 300 gallon tank all stayed in their territory. 300÷3=100. Each betta did fine with about 100 gallons of his own space. Sounds right. Bettas in the wild have a territory of about 4×4 feet which is MUCH larger than those bowls people put them in. Just like if you put a betta in a 1000 gallon tank, he will probaly just guard 100 or less gallons of the tank

Maddie Sig. Take your own advice, idiot. They're very territorial and live in small secluded territories. "Educate yourself". I've seen it first hand in my 300 gallon which housed 3 males. They all kept to themselves within their areas of the tank. They all lived for 2 years before I shut the tank down. I don't think some random chick on the internet is in any position to tell an ichthyologist what's right and and what's wrong..
Nice attempt at trying to seem intelligent though, troglodyte.

Maddie Sig. They do indeed love in rivers that stretch miles. However, it is proven that bettas usually have a 12x12 inch (30x30 cm) (sometimes it is a bit bigger, sometimes it's a bit smaller) territory, and they don't leave that territory, unless there's no food.
I used to keep a betta in a 20x12x12 (50x30x30 cm) tank, and it stayed in the right side of it, unless there was food in the left side.

Doggonnelt, you're a fucking idiot. The reason you want a bigger tank for your betta isn't so it has more room to fuck around with. Bettas live in tiny areas within rice paddies in the wild. The reason you want a bigger tank is because it's safer and easier to control. Temperature is much harder to control with a smaller tank as are ammonia levels. Unless you're doing a 100% water change each day, you're hurting your Betta with the ammonia levels. And if you are doing a 100% water change everyday, you're stressing out your betta beyond belief. Your betta isn't happy, it's stressed. Longevity isn't an indicator of happiness. You're taking advantage of your fish's hardiness.

+DogGoneIt 82 does your betta get any mental stimulation? No. Does you betta get any exersize? No.
To you, your bettas main existance is to please you. You dont give a crap about what type of quality life he has so you decide to shove him in the smallest tank you could possibly get to please yourself. THEN you lie to YOURSELF by saying "hes happy" its impossible for a living creature to be happy when it spends all of its life in an area wear it can hardly swim a few inches.
NEWSFLASH: just because your betta has survived doesnt mean its "happy" or thriving. It just means its one of the unlucky ones that didnt get the luxury of a quick death right from the start. I honestly dont care how "many books" you read. I care about your direction to follow the books. And please tell me what betta book you stumbled across and said "bettas are very happy in a tank barely 0.50 gallons as opposed to a 5 gallon tank with a heater and filter" im pretty sure there isnt an article anywhere that says that. You know why? Because bettas liking small spaces is a myth. Its something small tank suppliers tell their buyers to make them feel at ease for putting a living creature in such harsh conditions.
Let me do a quick comparison for you to know what im talking about. Lets compare.... a dog and your betta together! The equivelent for a dog in the size tank your betta is in, would be... a dog crate. Now imagine somebody locks the dog in the dog crate it has some room to turn around and it can also take 2 small steps forward, thats it. Now give the dog food and water everyday. But NEVER take the dog out! Pick up his pee and poo every week. So by the end of the week he is muddled in his pee and poo waiting for you to clean it out. Would this be ok? If your a normal person you will say "no" now if i ask " if this is not ok then why is it ok to keep a betta in a small tank?" Im curious to hear your answer. The only reason you think its ok for a betta to be in a small tank is because of the lies you have heard.
With all that being said you will probaly tell me another lie and then tell me im wrong. Just do me a favor, quit wasting my time and just show me PROFESSINIOL studies that say "bettas dont deserve a big tank and they are happy in a small tank without a heater and filter"

sumrsolo I would have got a larger tank, 5 gallons but as a first time fish keeper, i bought what the internet said to, a 2.5 at bare minimum. Now I never buy any tanks smaller than 5 gallons and my one betta lives in a heavily planted tank. I mean bigger is better but there should be a reason why 2.5 gallons come up as minimum betta tank size in so many forms right?
sumrsolo
sumrsolo - 7 years ago
TheGolemHunter

I think a 2.5 is better as a standard "oops" for new owners of fish to go to rather than 1 gallon and smaller. I personally don't go smaller than a 3 gallon now for just one fish and a snail but I also make sure there's a live plant too. I think 5 or 10 gallons are nice though. But yeah they won't won't suffer if you keep up with them. I do believe that there is such a thing as too big of a tank for fish that are small. It could stress them like african dwarf frogs. You can get them a big tank but I hear if you don't fill it with hide huts they are bored and can't feel safe. They love to explore. Just an example.

Bug Girl 101 Are you high? Sorry but i get that you like to give fish (smaller ones) a good life but tank sizes listed on the internet are probably listed because that type of fish can thrive in that comdition. For example a betta, 2.5 is the minimum and and higher is recommended, for a goldfish, 20 gallons or more. 15-20 gallons saying that that is the size you should always get is pushing it. Space, cost, and time.

My betta is in a 2.5 gallon bowl that at first only had a snail and a live plant with a hidey hut plus a small figure. I since added another snail and an African Dwarf frog too but it's temporary. They're actually existing nicely but I plan on getting them all at least a 10 gallon tank in 2 weeks immediately because I am learning a lot and it's what is BEST quality of life that truly matters. Sure they're dealing and maybe even somewhat happy but I believe they could be HAPPIER. It also just makes me happy to have them at their happiest anyway. I love knowledge and learning. Embrace that you may not know everything...you're not cruel if you didn't know but want to fix it. So just go out buy the right things for your aquatic friends as soon as you can (sooner rather than later). No one is perfect but just say "Thanks for telling me and I will fix that asap for my water babies" and actually do it. Oh and my 2.5 gallon bowl was $10 and it was at Walmart. We all do have to acknowledge that prices vary from state to state and country to country though but then you may have to pass on this hobby if you can't house them as they would be happiest/healthiest. I feel your pain but everything living comes with much care and responsibility.

aileen * What? Answering your conditioner talk, it does not neutralize it forever. For example prime, it can reduce ammonia and nitrate and nitrite for 48 hours by 1ppm so you would constantly have to use it and some toxins cant be neutralized. All i really wanted to say is if you cant afford the basics, please dont own one. It may seem like you are saving it or that you really want one but if you cant buy what you have to get, please just find a different hobby. My family is a little under average money wise but them working 7 days a week puts out and they could have simply said to not own fish or you dont need that but they said sure even though the cost is just big. Just buy the filter, buy the tank, buy the heater, buy the lights, and buy EVERYTHING needed at that point in time and save a little for medication when needed.

aileen * - 7 years ago
Actually I went to my local pet store and anything 2.5 gallons and up started at $25. I guess this is true if you buy tanks without a filter or led light. In addition to the cost of food, hideouts, plants, water conditioner, pepples, and a heater it can total to over $40. Fish care is not cheap. A fish does not care about the quality of its bowl, as long as they can spread out their fins and speed around they're good. I think that with the proper materials, this is a great idea for someone who cannot afford a regular tank.

Kawaii x Kitten Plecos require much more space and im not sure how they would take the salt in the brackish water. Just do a small pool of water and sand slowly rising out of the pool and into just sand. Just make it look like a beach. Water on one side and sand on the other. Read more about the crabs and see what you find. I would recommend just the crab in the ten gallon.

Do you know why goldfish die within 5 years of being in a bowl? Because they can't grow anymore! Would you appreciate it if someone took you and put you in a closet for your whole life? No, I'm sure you wouldn't. But that's what a bowl does to fish. At least my fish has a house, and perhaps a backyard (I have a 10 gallon). Do you notice any lines on your betta?

Freshwater tanks I have a glass 10 gallon for my fish. I bought it for $14. Of course, I bought my filter for $20, and I also bought rocks and some decorations for around $10. Starting off with fish can be expensive, (or so, if you can only afford a $10 tank with everything involved) but it's totally worth it. You can build filters for cheap, and get rocks/fake plants for cheap too.
Jessica Huynh
Jessica Huynh - 7 years ago
MissHarleyQuinn Of course fish supplies are expensive. But people who put their fish in a 1 gallon tank is unacceptable. The fish can't swim no places to explore and it will just get boring. A beta should at least have a 10 Gallon tank. Plus 10 gallon tanks aren't even that expensive! If you can't take care of a fish properly then don't buy a fish at all. If you can't afford a good sized tank for your fish then don't buy a fish. Are you really going to steal the happiest of an animals so you can save 20 dollars? Some people shouldn't have animals. And I know that people are less fortunate.... if so they SHOULDN'T HAVE ANIMALS IF THEY CAN'T TAKE CARE OF THEM!

MissHarleyQuinn Well, you kind of contradicted yourself by saying "healthy" and "no filter" in the same sentence. Filters allow for cleaner water and a buildup of healthy bacteria for the fish. No betta would choose no filter over a filter. It's just anti-science to say that.
MissHarleyQuinn

Bettas live happily, bubbling and healthy in bowls and 2.5 gal tanks too. No filter. Deal with it. You dony control people. You wont stop it. Stop hating on people who are less fortunate then others. i spent 20 total on our betta in November hes still happily going strong like all our other bettas who lived many many years. Deal with it kid.

+LB LB One gallon is absolutely too small for any living thing. There's no swimming or hiding space, and no mental stimulation. It's also bascially impossible to have decent water quality in a tank that size. I wouldn't put a betta in anything under 10 gallons. It's actually pretty easy to care for a 10 gallon aquarium. All you need is a siphon, a bucket, and 10 minutes of your day. Please don't keep a betta in that small of space.

Plastic containers such as this can leech toxins into the water, especially when heated. Make sure you only use glass or acrylic for your fish, otherwise you are slowly poisoning them. Please look up the effects on fish situated in plastic containers. KNOW WHAT YOU'RE USING! Dollar store containers, I can almost guarantee, are not high quality and are quite toxic to fish. If you're completely set on using a plastic container, use one that is FDA approved, BPA free, and microwavable safe. This will ensure that any toxins in the plastic will stay in the plastic. If you wouldn't eat from it, don't put your fish with it.

Not a bad setup if you cant readily find 5 or 10 gallon tanks locally, really no reason for people to still be using bowls with how cheap it is to set up a 10 gallon these days, 10 for the tank 2 bucks shipped for a sponge filter on ebay another 5 or 10 for a heater and your set.

Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
it depends on what media you use. most diy filters work for primarily biological filtration (good bacteria that keep your tank 'clean' from ammonia and other products of fish waste that can build up and harm them) which is the most important kind of filtration to have in a tank, but you could use a stronger air pump and more sponge or add filter floss for more mechanical filtration. even then that still doesnt replace the need for regular water changes though to clean the tank and remove debris :)
J Renèe ツ
J Renèe ツ - 8 years ago
Yeah... but you're better off with an actual filter long term. The DIY ones keep the water circulating and stops it from being stagnant but doesn't do much of anything in keeping the water clean in my experience.

Ahhh this is so cool - I never knew you could DIY a filter like that! Do you know if this setup would work in a scaled-up (heh, geddit, fish have scales) way - like for example if I got a 50 gal RUB and put a goldfish or two in there? (Have you experiemented - do you know what water pressure plastic storage bins can typically hold?)
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
you could def scale it up, in fact i was sort of planning on doing a similar container pond for goldfish in the future using the same idea, but with a lot of live plants lol. with a bigger water volume it will be more difficult to use long term because of the pressure but with just 50 gal you should be fine - i recommend making sure the plastic is HDPE so it can stand more pressure and also be less likely to leach chemicals in case of heat contact. the rubbermaid roughneck containers are good for this and you can also additionally reinforce them to keep from bowing out from the weight by stacking one inside another or wrapping duct tape all the way around the top, middle, and bottom to hold it in place.

and of course with a bigger tank and goldfish you'd need to scale up the filtration capability by using a bigger bottle and more media. i recommend checking out the king of DIY's channel and videos on how to make moving bed filters for better instructions on doing this on a larger scale :)

If you want something other than a beta you'd be best off with a $51 10 gallon starter kit. Because a filter and heater would already cost $40 so you wouldn't save much buying a container. And diy filters aren't suitable for fish other than a betta, they just keep the water moving, won't keep your water much cleaner. If you get a container larger than 10 gallons maybe a diy setup could work. Just don't forget the treat your water with water conditioner, if you don't your fish will die overnight most likely.
Miranda Pelletier
Miranda Pelletier - 8 years ago
Yay! what size tank are you going to have? If you do a 5 gal like the video you're pretty limited in what fish will fit (pretty much just a betta) but with 10-20 gallons there are a lot more options. I recommend guppies for beginners :) Also make sure you cycle the tank first

Yep... I keep and breed many different types of fish in the good old sterilite and rubbermaid containers... have for years... It will save you on electric replacing overworked heaters because they hold heat for much longer periods than glass or acrylic... and its also a very impact and temperature deflecting container.... The only fish containers that made it through an entire softball sized hail event that broke my windows and glass tanks... After that I have switched to using only sterilite and rubbermaid totes and tubs for all my fish. so good creative video

I know what you mean, yes. That's what I'm talking about too. The big rectangular glass aquariums that are really big are, alone, very pricey. And the 10 gallons, alone, aren't ever under $20 here. The 2.5 gallon ones I refer to are the ones sold in boxes purposely made for bettas, because I've never come across any aquariums on their own that are less than 10gals without a light. It sucks, but its just how things are where I am which is why I always come back to my original point; you can't speak for everyone when it comes to prices on things. :p
J Renèe ツ
J Renèe ツ - 7 years ago
+Samantha G I was talking about regular old, glass, rectangle glass aquariums, not ones with dividers or lighting....just the aquarium. And most large aquariums (such as 70 gallons) come as an ensemble. Since you cannot put something of that size and weight on any regular old table or dresser...
youaregolden -
youaregolden - - 7 years ago
+J Renèe ツ In Canada, many good quality glass aquariums aren't just dirt cheap and people often try reselling them online for even higher prices. its a rather snotty deal but the fact of the matter is that you can't really invest in a strong and large aquarium that's actually good sized for your fish for any less than $20. Some 70 gallon tanks can cost hundreds, as I've seen at pet smart all the time. /: My 2.5 gallon cost me approximately $35 alone. It is a split tank for two bettas, but I removed the divider because it was the only 2.5 gallon tank I could find and it only comes with a colour LED light. Compared to other stores, this was a great deal. Another shop I went in was selling a tank a bit smaller than 2.5 for like, $70.
J Renèe ツ
J Renèe ツ - 7 years ago
+Samantha G a 10 gallon without any accessories should not cost any more than $15, if you pay more than that...in store, you're overpaying. A 10gallon with hood, lighting, heater, thermometer and filters, should cost around $50. Since you're out of the country, I'll make sure to clarify I mean US dollars.
youaregolden -
youaregolden - - 7 years ago
+J Renèe ツ Not at all. A 10 gallon where I live is typically $50+ at least. Sometimes PetCo has a dollar per gallon sale, but there are non of those stores in my country. They definitely don't cost the same as a 2.5 gal, so as I said before; you cannot speak on behalf of everyone.
J Renèe ツ
J Renèe ツ - 7 years ago
+Samantha G typically a 10 gallon aquarium (just aquarium) costs the same as a 2.5 gallon (just aquarium) I assume it's because 10 gallon is a pretty standard size.
youaregolden -
youaregolden - - 7 years ago
you can't speak for everyone. a 2.5 gallon tank where I live at the cheapest price I could find is $35 plus tax. That's just the tank that comes with the LED light. on top of this comes food, conditioner, accessories, a net, filter, heater, substrate and gravels or whatever, thermometer, and the fish itself, etc. having a fish isn't some simple one day setup and no it is not just a cheap and easy investment. many people don't know this. those who have the improper setups were more than likely unaware of the better options for their pet and probably only settled with a small bowl because 1) they thought it was okay, and 2) it was what they could best afford. not everyone is as knowledgeable.
MarineLifeDrew
MarineLifeDrew - 7 years ago
ok I'm sorry you feel that way. I do my best to care of my fish to the best of my ability while at the same time making sure I don't empty my bank account. All I was pointing out is that often times you can get a decent sized aquarium for the same price a decorative small bowl. I know from working at pet stores that when people look at getting fish they always think that the bowls are cheapest option so they go for them rather than a proper aquarium.

J Renèe ツ
J Renèe ツ - 8 years ago
Yeah the filters and heaters quickly add up to $40 on top of the $10 or $14 for the aquarium. So you'd be best off with starter kit 10 gallon for $52 and get extra things like a LED hood because bettas are good jumpers. You could get a 5.5 gallon starter kit for $31 but you'd need a separate heater that costs $15-20 so at that point you're still better off with the 10 gallon starter kit to get the most with your money. The prices are based off of the sales pet smart frequently has. Although black Friday is coming up so there could be even more savings then.
Miranda Pelletier

Eric Mezenberg my pet list has changed a bit since I last posted. I now have two dogs, two puppies, 22 fish, 10 tanks, well over 250 gallons of water in my home, a hamster, and a nice little albino corn snake

bai watson I have 1 dog, 2 fish, and I'm getting African dwarf frogs really soon. I might be getting a leoapard gecko or bearded dragon and maybe some birds too. We used to have a lot more pets (2 dogs, 4 fish, 3 birds, 1 guniea pig) but all except 1 dog and guniea pig passed, the 1 dog lives with my grandparents so we have a new dog and my mom was allergic to the guniea pig so it was adopted.

Andrew Yong a community can be like 3 fish or animals. I have two female bettas in a 10g, with 3 adf. That's 5 things in a 10g and its not overstocked. If each adf needs at least one gallon, then they use 3g. And each betta needs at least 2.5 gallons so that's 5 gallons. I have 2 gallons left for them to share basically. 5 things to me is a community.

Arya C I just looked into that and there aren't any studies that prove that so I'm going to continue doing what all of my bettas are thriving in. They're all active, responsive, and they're always hungry. They don't seem disoriented at all. So I'm going to keep all of them just how they are.
Arya C

bai watson the problem with bowls is that it also distorts their vision because they are circular, and so in the long term they'll cause vision problems for your betta. If you want what's best for the fish (and not aesthetics), get a glass tank. Amazon have really well priced small ones perfect for betta fish

I have my betta in a fish bowl BEFORE YOU PUNCH ME IN THE FACE we are actually thinking to update the bowl into a tank so it will have more space and add more fish buy split it of course the bowl is a temporary home for dory (my betta) so id like it to not punch my face thank you :D

+bai watson i think that if someone wants a fish and cant afford it all right away, I would suggest they take the time and use the patients to buy up the supplies and food and water treatment first and then get the fish once they have it all saved up.

bai watson - 7 years ago
Angela Bossi i agree. My fish are all pretty simple and you can buy tanks for nothing on eBay, Amazon, Craigslist etc. you can buy a 10gallon box aquarium at Walmart for $13
Angela Bossi
Angela Bossi - 7 years ago
+bai watson agreed. my dog cost $80 to adopt from the shelter, he eats about $10-20 a week in food, it will cost me $60 to get him fixed, he has a $90 vet check up every 6 months plus heartworm medicine, rabies shots, and various other costs associated with proper care, and im also taking him to puppy training, another $130 investment.
I provide all of it to give him the best life possible. (i don't go on vacation, but I have friends with experience to help care for them when im unavailable) I also have 5 snakes, 2 chickens, a horse, 2 rats, a kitten, a tarantula and a cockatiel. All of them have the best care available and I am able to stick to their vet schedules and vaccines and parasite prevention ragularly.. I work from home and I do fairly well, well enough to provide and spoil all my pets. Now, dont get me wrong, I am not ungrateful for the opportunity to have so many, and keep them so healthy but thats not my point..
My point is that all a fish needs is food, and a life time investment in a good sized tank, a proper filter and a heater. on top of that we have hacks like this to make it even cheaper. if someone is unwilling or unable to give proper care to an animal, then they should not take on the responsibility of the animals life and well being.
bai watson
bai watson - 7 years ago
Angela Bossi idk. I have two dogs, a hamster, nine fish tanks/bowl, and am about to get a 150gallon saltwater tank. All of my animals are properly taken care of and get the attention that they need. I have a live in pet sitter for when I leave to go on vacation. I have the money to take care of all of my pets and give them what they need and more (way more bc they're my babies) I wouldn't have any of my pets if I couldn't take care of them as well as I do.
bai watson
bai watson - 7 years ago
Angela Bossi I think that you shouldn't get a pet that you can't afford to properly take care of.

man, all I can say, is people who claim they cant "afford" a propper set up for a freaking FISH. a fish, these people can't take care of a fish!? then they just dont deserve a pet... simple as that.

I'm really not sure how much fish brains are psychologically-affected by the amount of space they have; definitely not in the way humans are. Some scientists believe fish don't even feel pain as humans do. If this is the case, it wouldn't really matter, but we're not quite sure yet.

Veny Mae betas are tropical animals they need proper heaters and filters it's a common myth that betas come from small muddy patches of water but they don't they come from fresh water shallow rivers and need lots of room to swim also plastic containers release toxins into the water which poisons your fish if you can't buy proper supplies for any animal don't get it just because it's a fish doesn't mean it lives for a few months betas can live up to five years in the right living conditions and with owners who know what they're doing some people keep their betas in bowls glass cup vases even they crate they came in they at least need ten to twenty gallons of water
Electricjoji
Electricjoji - 7 years ago
Dawn Gomez no it's not plastic releases toxins into the water especially when heated if you can't afford proper supplies then don't get an animal
