Divided Betta Fish Tank Update

Our 10 gallon divided Betta fish tank is doing really well. We make and sell the betta fish tank dividers. The plants are looking amazing. We do not use fertilizer in the tanks only root tabs. The lighting is the Deckey LED light. We do not use a heater in the tank as where we live is very hot and our house is kept at a consistent temperature. Did you have to cycle the tank before putting the bettas in and how long did it take
Atrociousbear 219
Atrociousbear 219 - 6 years ago
sorry i was a little confused, thank you so much for the help! :)
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
I'm assuming you're talking about something like seachem stability or tetra safe start. These do help speed up the process but you still need to cycle the tank. Ammonia is needed for the cycle to start. Without it the beneficial bacteria has nothing to feed on.
Atrociousbear 219
Atrociousbear 219 - 6 years ago
Do you NEED to use ammonia to start cycling a tank or can you use beneficial bacteria
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Yes. I am able to use sponge filters from other tank so I don't have to wait. So the tank is always fully cycled when I add fish. Most cycles take 3-5 weeks.

How did you make the pvc pipe with the moss ball again? Was it just sticking it with super glue or did u have to tie it? I can't seem to recall which video it was from

Yes we used a little super glue.

Hi, great videos! I have a half moon betta that has been biting his own fins. I can't figure out why? He did it a few months ago and then they healed up and just the other day he bit them again. Water quality is good. He is in a 5 gallon planted tank. Should I move him into a near my other tetra tank so he can see more? I am out of ideas. Thanks
Vanessa Olson
Vanessa Olson - 6 years ago
Lifewithpets thank you! I will move around his decorations. I trimmed a few plants and made a little more room for him to swim around. I just want him to be happy.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
I have one that does the same. He goes for months without biting and then will suddenly start again. I have found moving the decorations and plants around help. He's also in a divided tank so once a month I have started switching sides so he gets a complete change. So far so good.

Awesome plants and fish! Since this is a relatively new planted tank, did you have any plant melting? If so how did you remedy it? I don't know if you have talked about this in another video but I just had to ask
Art Encounter

Ok thanks! Also thanks for always responding to all of my questions
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Thanks! It's not something I've experienced in our plants. When we put the plants in we make sure they have roots tabs for food. If you have a plant melt back give it time to convert and it should come back stronger.

Regarding Rupert's fin-biting behavior... It's possible he gets bored with his environment and needs more interaction and/or stimulation (which might explain why he stops this behavior when you move him from tank to tank). Lots of domesticated pets develop self-destructive behaviors when they're bored (i.e., feather picking, over-grooming, etc.) I have a half-moon betta I rescued about 4 months ago who had bitten the top half of his tail down to nothing. His fins have fully recovered now and he's stopped biting his fins. Here's what I've done so far: 1) He lives in a cycled 2.5 gallon tank with an undergravel filter and a heater and I dosed him with Melafix. 2) I change 50% of his water & vacuum his gravel every other week. 3) I rearrange his tank decorations occasionally. 4) He's now trained to jump for his food at each feeding (3-4 betta pellets, 2x/day). He seems to enjoy the interaction and is very active moving about his tank exploring and watching outside his tank for visitors. I know you're probably very busy with the maintenance & upkeep of all your pets, but you might consider rearranging his tank occasionally or try training him to do "betta tricks" to provide a more stimulating environment. I hope this helps... Good luck!
P.S. Your aquarium setups and designs are inspiring and have motivated me to try working more with planted tanks. Thanks for all the great videos and keep up the excellent work.

Hi! I recently just bought a 10 gallon tank and plan on diving it for my two bettas. I was wondering what kind of air pump you use because I'm having a difficult time trying to choose one since I want sponge filters on both sides. Thank you! :)
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
No, we use a 2-3 way valve, that way you can run more than one sponge filter on an air pump. This video might be helpful and all the links to the items are in the description box of the video. https://youtu.be/GyQIuTX0h2w
Alina Ly

Hi, Im planning on getting a tank today and the fish in 2 days time. If I put the kickstart cycle liquid etc, is that enough time?
Mysmall petshop
Mysmall petshop - 6 years ago
Thank you very much. Im going to wait two weeks. Sorry I keep asking you questions but you're my trusted source!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Not really, It takes several weeks for the cycle to get going but kickstart will help. You will need to add fish food or a source of ammonia when you add the kickstart otherwise the bacteria won't have anything to feed on.

Was hoping to get your advice/opinion, I have a 29 gallon that is basically fully stocked but... I have a brown algae problem and I was thinking of getting a bristlenose pleco to help. The addition of the pleco will bring my tank to about 33 inches of fish. I've also added a few extra plants and started reducing my lights from 12 hrs/day to 10. Will the extra bioload of the bristle cause any extra problems for my tank ? Seeing as the 1 inch per gallon guideline will be exceeded in this tank ?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
The inch per gallon rule has long been discarded. Whilst it's a general guide it on the whole isn't very accurate. Plecos produce a lot of waste so depending on why you have an algae problem it may add to it. I would reduce your lights to 6-8 hours a day and reduce feeding and see if that helps before adding more fish. Other good algae eaters are nerite snails and otocinclus that you may like to research.

This set up is really just so beautiful! I was having a huge problem with tail biting and aquarium coop suggested I try my guy in a well planted community tank so he has something to kind of chase but the other fish have lots of places to hide. It stopped the tail biting and he did so well with tankmates(rasboras, cory cats, cardinal tetras).
Heidi's Fish Tank
Heidi's Fish Tank - 7 years ago
I'm so glad you figured out what works best for your guy! Just goes to show that fish are individuals. Tail biting is super hard because you can do everything "right" and they still bite. It's so stressful.
Lifewithpets

Thank you! Yes we tried that but he bite his fins much worse, he seemed so stressed out. At this point he is definitely better on his own.

Would four cories be fine in 5G (10G divided)? I just bought a 10G tank, and my betta may or may not tolerate them. I have one single cory as of now simply to test if my betta will tolerate him. My cory is always hiding, but when he's just sitting in the open on the ground, not moving my betta seems to ignore him most of the time. As well as no injuries.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Yes, this is often the case. Most tanks are slightly different sizes even though they're supposed to be the same. Our dividers would still fit your tank though.
Lukas
Lukas - 7 years ago
Aqueon Petco 10G. However, this one has slightly smaller dimensions than all the other ones that were being sold in store. 10" instead of 10.3" width. I may just head back so I don't have an odd ball, and give me a slightly more water in my tank getting the very slightly larger tank.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Yes, minimum 10 gallon, they're very active fish. Yes interior measurements. What 10 gallon tank do you have? Aqueon, topfin etc?
Lukas
Lukas - 7 years ago
Four pygmys in a 5G, still too small? Also, on your website with the divider, is the minimum maximum measurements for the interior measurements? IE from the end of one piece of glass to the next piece, where they connect with silicone width wise.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
No, it would be too small. Cory's prefer to be in groups of 4 -6 or more so a 10 gallon will be on the small side unless they're Pygmy Cory's. A 5 gallon would be too small either way.

You spoke about having an algae problem. Instead of blacking out the side of the tank I would get a nice sized Pleco. They're extremely docile and all my Bettas all get along great with plecos and really just ignore them for the most part. I got a 7 inch long pleco for like $12 at pet supplies plus.

hey sheila! love your videos
about filtration i really do recommend little sponge filters or some type of water movement on both sides with these types of dividers because for a while i only had filtration on one side and the other side started developing bubbles and like a gooey clear film and i read somewhere that that was build up ammonia or something like that so i do recommend!!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
It comes from the lack of gas exchange at the top of the tank.

oh really? I didnt know, does it come from the fish or the plants?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Thanks! I agree, that why I said add an air stone. The film you're talking about is a protein skin and completely harmless to your fish it happens when there little to no water movement.
