Do Betta Fish Need a Heater?

Does a Betta fish need a heater? Yes they need a heater! Betta fish need a temperature of 78-82 f. If you live in a warm climate you may not need a heater all year round. They can live in cooler temperatures but for the most part they won't thrive and will get sick more often. I use the Marina Betta heater suitable for tanks that are 1-3 gallons. Let's connect! I think depends where a person lives . Someone living in Thailand probably wouldn't need heater .

Do you really need a filter???
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Yes, unless you can commit to 80-100% water changes every 2-3 days. We use sponge filters in all our Betta tanks.

Bettas should not be kept in anything less than 2.5 gallons though...

That is good, I've watched some of your tank design ideas and I really want to switch from silk plants to live plants. I currently have 2 Bettas, a rescued Koi Plakat female and a red Veil male, but I've kept over 10 in the past. My male is in a 30 gallon community with 6 Neon Tetras and 5 Glowlight Tetras, it's heavily planted and I have a lot of caves. It's heated and filtered too. My female is in a 2.5 gallon by herself because she is a lot more aggressive than my male and didn't do well in the community haha. Bettas are awesome.

Bettas need a consistent temperature of 78-80f. If you can provide that day in day out without a heater then you don't need one, however if you home goes cooler over night then the bettas needs one.

can i use a lamp as a heater?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Not really it won't heat the water evenly and when you turn it off the water will go cold.

Should i put a betta in a 55gallon with neon tetras and cherry shrimp?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
It's likely the Betta will kill the cherry shrimp. They typically attack shrimp even as large as ghost shrimp.

That is crazy, they dont tell you this at the pet store, they are like no it doesn't need anything just a fish bowl and your good.

Lifewithpets I bought a betta recently and they told me to only feed it 2 pellets a day and to change the water every week! But i am also a beginner. What do you recommend me to do without a heater and filter? I don't have a big tank only a very small gallon but i am upgrading immediately. Yet i am only a new fish keeper and i don't know where to get a cheap or decent priced heater and filter any recommendations or anyway i can keep my betta alive without a heater and filter with alternatives

This is typically what I hear a lot. It was one of the main reasons I started my channel, to raise awareness.

Thats probably why the one we bought for my daughter died after like 3 weeks. Only did 50% water change once a month in a fish bowl. wish i woulda known better.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
After Goldfish, Bettas are one of the most abused fish. If you listen to a petstore they will tell you a half gallon is enough, no heater or filter. It's crazy! They're tropical fish and should be treated just like any other tropical fish. They love space to swim as long as it's well planted. If you don't have a filter 100% of the water has to be changed every 3 days. Let's face it who's going to do that! Actually I did

Betta fish need heater only if you live in a country that could be cold but if you live in a hot country the heater is not useful.

+‫محمدهشام سمير‬‎ As long as your home is a consistent temperature of 76-80 degrees then no, you don't need a heater.

Great video! I think its extremely important to have a heater in betta tanks. People think that they are just something you can add but you don't need, but in order for a truly happy betta I feel a warm tank is needed❤️

I use the aqueon ten watt heater. It does overheat the tank, but all you have to do is unplug it for fifteen minutes.

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Neon Tetra Aquarist This is an 8w and no overheating issues. I'd worry I'd forget to unplug a heater! A little risky. I use Aqueon on my 20 gallon. Another week or so and then I won't need any heaters till next winter!!
