Wash your plants and substrate thoroughly, you can use tap water but make sure to dip it in some RO/DI water, but it takes a lot of tap water to harm your fish. Hope I helped!

Jenny most peeps go by the rule of 1 inch per gallon. They have said cories needs to be in a minimum of school of 6 or more, if I were you I won't do it. Your best shot is shrimps or get a bigger tank if you really like to have other fishes with your betta. A lot of people have/had succeed in keeping shrimps with betta fish. I have medium grade painted fire shrimps in my 10 gallon tank and I've been waiting for them to breed before I add a betta fish. (Which will be soon.. Omg I can't wait to get one

Nice set up for a Betta and good choices of tank mates, I would just say with the tetras they are ok in your tank because it is a 20 long but most people have smaller tanks for bettas and tetras although small like to dart about and therefore small tanks are not suitable despite their small size. Also darting schooling fish like tetras do tend to annoy betta fish, your tank is fine because it is big enough but in a smaller tank the betta might get nippy and annoyed with them darting about. Love to see betta fish in properly set up tanks, very nice tank and consideration given to its inhabitants.

Besides the tank being cycled and check parameters, one of the thinks I do when introducing new tank mates is, to get the betta out, introduce the new fish, use stress coat solution; After an hour bring the betta back and make sure the tanks light is off.

is your tank cycled? Normally if it isn't cycled you will have some deaths in neons even if you didn't have the betta

where'd you get your Betta? I've been on a pretty big Betta hunt and the overwhelming amount I've seen are all the exact same looking 'walmart' quality most are those crappy red veiltails. I have four Bettas they are the best I've been able to find but they aren't as good looking as yours is.

brittany harrod hello thanks for your reply! I visit pretty much every Petco(and PetSmart but 95% of PetSmart's are exactly the same and have horrible HORRIBLE quality fish) I find. I did find a gorgeous red/blue/purple big doubletail at Petco last year but unfortunately he developed Popeye the day after I got him and I literally watched his eye explode and he died the next day. all the petcos I've been to have the same crappy bettas except for two locations that usually has several better quality bettas and almost none have the Koi variety. even LFS's don't have really good quality bettas. I went to Asia last December and in Singapore I'd stumbled upon a tropical fish store in one of the countless malls there and the BETTAS WERE SO GORGEOUS they were unlike any betta I'd ever seen in the USA. huge extremely colorful and healthy, even the 20g female sorority tank was beautiful colorful female bettas, what little females I find for sale in the states are colorless and very small. the guy had all his male bettas on a wall in what looked like 2 gallon equivalent glass tanks and they were displaying themselves, they were so amazing. I wish I could had imported a few :( the most expensive was $95. they totally put our common junk bettas in the USA to shame. someday I'm gonna buy an imported one from Thailand.

Any problems with the tetra's nipping the Betta's fins? I've been thinking of starting a tank after being out of it for a few years and the last set up I had was a 10g with either guppies or red tetra's, can't remember what was what. But one of those groups of fish were biting the Beta's fins and causing him stress.

Im saving up for a 55 gallon. I plan to have 5 or 7 female betta, maybe 10 cardnal tetras, 10 or so ghost shrimp. How many Cory catfish should I get, and will adding dwarf frogs work? Possibly a couple snails? And would 10 more tetras ( small but a different color) work?

Dont get a bowl get a tank with a good filter (Ive recently got a 6 gallon) but anything above 2 is good enough but the bigger the better. Make sure your tank is cycled! Mine wasnt fully cycled and i had high nitrite levels because of this. I do 25 percent water changes every 2 weeks because i only have 1 betta. Dont do 100% water changes because it takes out the good bacteria and will undo the cycling of your tank. Bettas also need a heater i set mine at 80F and he seems happy with that. Obviously put dechlorinator/conditioner in your water and your set.
You'll probably know this but dont put 2 male bettas together

Also my ghost shrimp have lived for 6 months so far but my betta is chill, every betta is different so test it out when you get a betta put 4 ghost shrimp with him if he kills them well you know he can't be kept with them

I can help you, even though this was a month ago so you probably already have one, it depends on the setup if you have it in a bowl you do 100% water change every 3 days if in a setup like his you do 20% weekly or 30 every two weeks

Hiya first of all I set up my tank for a week then I added Rasboras , then a week later I added my betta fish, then a week later added mollies, its always best to add slowly as if you put them all in together they could end up dead or really sick. If youre son really wants a betta , get the tank set up, then add the betta and maybe a catfish , then a week later add a couple more, Its depends on the size of your tank, don't be tempted to overstock.

a betta won't jump if it feels it's tank is large enough.the reason why bettas jump is cause they think they are in a puddle about to dry up so they jump in hope of finding a bigger water system.

I have a wonderful community tank with one male betta, five neon tetras, four other types of tetras, two guppies, one cory catfish, one pleco bristle nose, & an african dwarf frog. So you can have other fish with a betta for sure. My betta loves his tank mates & doesn't seem care about them too much he has a friendly personality through & isn't too aggressive.

Male and female are the same in anger best not to mix them or have more than one in a small tank best to have a really large tank with loads if plants and rocks and other hiding spots for them but even then u have the risk of a fight and some being killed and I would say only put females in the large one together males I would say have a 3ft-4ft-7ft with again loads implants and hiding places and I would only put 2 in the tank but have a separator to make sure everything will work out fine before they get close to each other but again u might lose one or both

i've got one male and two females in a 200l planted tank and the male is way too lazy to chase them, well once in a time he does but the females are more agile and he instantly gives up, they are more female loving when they are younger but most of the males won't be fast enough to really bother a female even in a smaller tank, they have to put too much effort in the chase

I had a big red male betta that gradually ate his way through a small school of neons and cardinals. He would catch them after the lights were off and the room was lit only by the television and a table lamp at the other end of the room. I had no idea where the test were going until I caught him with a neon in his gullet and just the tail sticking out. I am sure there are some bettas which would ignore the tetras as too much effort to catch, but there are exceptions.

Whats the smallest tank you would recommend for an oto & a betta? Minimum of 10 or 20 gallons with lots of plant coverage & hiding spots?

I am planning to keep a betta with neon tetra's, but someone told me that I shouldn't because neon tetra's require a lower temperature than betta splendens, and will die faster when kept too warm (wat thinking of heating my tank to 76 F). What is your experience with this? how do the tetra's fare? what temperature do you keep your tank, too hot for the tetra's or too cool for the betta?

Most people will freak out and say none and that 2.5 is too small for the betta too begin with, which is technically true, but honestly having 2 small ghost shrimp in your tank won't kill your fish and it will be fine, as long as they don't bother each other.

Awesome! But I'd give a betta a cave, like a clean clay plant pot or something more aesthetic, but if he's hiding in the bushes he might feel nice in a dark cave once in a while. He may be a shy fish. Or not, but I'd meet him half way and give him a secret place to hang out. So he doesn't have to be on parade when he feels like staying under the covers. I'd offer a cave to most fish, but some seem to really need one for their own reasons, not even a betta thing. Just that particular fish.

Thanks for the recommendation on the Otto. I have a Pleco and he is getting too big. My pet store will take the pleco when he gets too big in trade, and I'm going to see if I can get an few Ottos. I have a male Betta with coryies, danios, neons and a female pleco. ( I have a video up showing them all happy together.)

you can get 20 at a time because they are only small if you buy dirty big fish like oscars only aloud 2 at a time

I had a catfish and he lived for quite a long time, I didn't put any other conditioner but the betta's, also ghost shrimp are two large for the betta to consume

I have a Betta too, he's all black cause I heard that to more brighter the color the more stress he's been through.. lol might sound weird but anyway.. a bit after I got him I went to the pet store and got a little catfish like yours, they were doing super well. My betta usually comes out of hiding and greats me when I enter the room but recently his friend died and he no longer greats me.. he stays in hiding, only when I have food does he come out. Should I get him another friend?

I went to go buy some ghost shrimp, catfish and maybe a dwarf frog at Petsmart to add to my 5.5 Gal Betta tank..the lady asked about it and then said that he would eat the ghost shrimp and because my water only has betta conditioner in it, the frog and catfish would die..so she tole me to buy this other conditioner and bacteria suplament and told me to come back in three days to buy a snail and frog. Is this necessary? did you have to set up your water before adding other fish to the betta?

You should keep at least four otos together so they will feel safer. You also should feed it algae wafers or/and sinking pellets once a day every time the lights go off at night.

ghost shrimp look cool BUT...they eat your fish,or your fish eat them,they also stress betas out...it is like fleas on a dog,eventually that flea will gbe big enough to grab the dog by the tail...seriously ghost shrimp eat bettas!!!

When I was a kid, my dad had a 55gal tank just like this minus the the Betta and the otto catfish (we had a plecostomus). Neon Tetras, ghost shrimp, the pleco, a couple angelfish, a crawdad, and a butterfly fish (Pantodon bucholzi, not the one most ppl know). Everyone got along really well.... Then we started adding cichlids... HUGE mistake. They're really pretty but mean as all hell, It eventually turned into a cichlid tank with a pleco. We thought maybe a Betta would do ok with them, nope :-(

beautiful aquarium! I'm trying a 5 gallon w/ beta and neon tetra but I also want to get otto catfish and ghost shrimp like you! i have heard that beta would eat the shrimp so you have any problem there with you? And do you know whats the best environment for neon tetras? Mine seem to stay in one place i don't know if they are comfortable with their tank or not ( i have very few planted bamboo sticks)

That is such a lovely tank! I've been obsessing over a bigger tank for weeks now, I want it to look just like that. One question though, is a betta likely to jump out of that without a lid of some sort? I heard they were jumpers.

Wow I love In California as well I have a question how do u feed your Betta without it eating the neon tetras food or the neon tetras eating the bettas food I'm wanton neon tetras but was wondering how for them to avoid each others food or they might get sick or somethin sorry for the long comment thx pls respond

I use dirt under my gravel so that helps with keeping my live plants. I'm not using CO2 in this aquarium but Im thinking of trying it out on a 60 gallon that I own
