1. Betta should not be in a bowl.
2. Those dial-a-treats are treats not food and these freeze dried foods can lead to countless diseases because they aren’t the healthiest. They should only be used sometimes as treats.

Vinay Raja it really depends on the betta. Some will tolerate other fish, and some will not. If you would like to have a betta in a community tank, make sure the aquarium is of the proper size. I would suggest at least a 20 gallon just to be safe. They usually will not do well with colorful fish like fancy guppies due to their long and colorful tails. I would suggest the keep them with other tropical fish with short tails that can swim fast. Zebra danios, cardinal or neon tetras, cory cats, plecos, I think would all be fine. If the betta decides to attack any of the other fish, or they attack him, have a backup plan. Such as an extra tank. I send my best wishes. If you have any more questions I’d love to answer them.

Scott Danziger well, it depends on the size of the tank. you could put 3 - 5 ghost shrimps in a 2.5 gallon tank. just put some large ghost shrimps, because some bettas could see the shrimps as a snack

the hope is they will go to a good home. Also many stores have a display with a sump and trickle system, that keeps the water nice and clean.

Other tropical fish that are not extremly vibrant and colorful, aggressive, need different water parameters, larger and therefore will eat your betta, have long, draping fins similar to a betta, or are a lot faster then a betta when it comes to feeding to a point where the betta can't get any food (bettas are slow due to their long flowing fins, unless it's a female or shorter finned male). Also other bettas (unless it's a female only aquarium).

Depends on your tank size and temperament of your betta. Some good tank mates are: Ember Tetras, Harlequin Resporas, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Pygmy Corydoras, Loaches, Plecos(Beware, some plecos get HUGE), certian snails, ghost or cherry shrimp, and neons. Be careful not to get anything that will nip the fins of the poor Betta.

MOst likely it has a illness like fin rot, or your tank is smaller that 1 gallon. If so get a better tank with a heater and filter. The rest of the decor and substrate is up to you.

My betta boys are both perfectly happy in my 4ft community tank with sharks, corydoras and danios. They're only terretorial if you don't give them space for their territories.They don't mind most other fish, guppies do tend to annoy mine a bit, so be watchful.

Maybe buy a ghost shrimp(their about 25 cents,cheap)And If he gets along with it maybe buy a cheap guppy and If he gets along with them then he is a great community fish.If he eats the shrimp hes too territorial(He is not to have with others),then if he bites the guppy then maybe a snail and shrimp are your better option!

Okay. The thing is, If you don't wanna rehome them. Keep each of them in a separate bucket with a filter, heater, and lighting. It may not be a tank but it is better than a small jar. OR you can just use jars and clean them every 2-3 days.

If you already have the fish, then there is little things you can do to improve their quality of life slowly. First of all, just start saving your money to get a 5 gal tank in the future. It is not the end of the world if they stay in a smaller tank for a certain time, as long as you still take good care of it. Just get the biggest you can get for now. If they are in a small tank with no filtration, make sure to do regular water changes to keep the water quality as high as possible and at least invest in a water conditionner to make your water safe for the fish. Get a small low flow filter when you can. Basically, just make a list of what you would ideally need and get them one by one slowly ;)

I have a betta in a 200 gallon community tank with angel fish, danios, sharks, plecos, bichirs, etc... You don't need a small or shallow aquarium, actuay bigger is better. I completely disagree with a lot of things she said, not gonna point out each one. Yes I do have years of experience with fish and other animals and o actually professionally specialize in betta fish, so yes I do know my information. just so many things she said that I have to disagree with. Biggest disagreement would have to be, NEVER KEEP A BETTA IN ONE OF THOSE TINY ASS BOWLS!!!

Thats why you put the leaf hammock near the surface in a low current area. Leaf hammock should be in a kinda shady area and sunny area or even near the heater if the betta gets sick.

IT also strongly depends on what type of betta you have. A veil tail or plakat would probably be the only bettas that would do well in a big community tank like that. Anything else with an elaborate finnage would probably be nipped, and might have issues swimming, dealing with current, and blowout a tail (in the case of a halfmoon) which leads to other issues like proper fin care and the dangers of fin rot.. When she mentioned a shallower tank she was talking about the dumbo betta which really is a poor swimmer.

In fairness, she did say that keeping bettas in larger aquariums is always best for them (they will live longer, healthier lives). She addressed the popular practice of keeping bettas in small bowls, and said a 5g minimum is MUCH better for the wellbeing of the fish. All we can do is say what is best for the fish, which she did, but it falls on all owners to choose for themselves.

5:15 your second favorite makes them fat for a reason, take a look at the ingredients. stay away from Hikari betta bio gold, it's awful. i'm surprised New Life Spectrum Betta Formula wasn't mentioned, well worth the extra $$ and your betta will love you for it.

We have a betta in a 5.5 gallon tank along with a dwarf frog and 4 cherry shrimp. We have been feeding him frozen blood worms (bought from Big Al's :p) and diced raw shrimp (teeny pieces) because he appears to love these 2 foods, and we prepare tons of these for our black ghost knife at the same times of the day.

Should we add anything else to our betta's diet? Both he and his frog buddy seem content eating bloodworms and shrimp, but I worry they need greater variety in their diet...

No food should ever be fed exclusively - variety is always best. In instances where you are dealing with a thin/underweight betta, some foods work better than others for weight recovery.

Plz HELP. Hey, so yesterday I decided to purchase a tetra 50 watt heater for my 10 gallon tank. It's odd because it seems to be working fine, but it turns on and off. The light with shine red for about a minute, and then turn off. The tank used to be around 68 degrees F (I know, that's really bad! That's why I got a heater) and now it's 71 degrees. It said on the package that it would go up to 78 d. Am I doing something wrong? Or does it take more than one day to heat up? Someone plz help, thanks.

Muhenoor Ali is correct! Depending on the type of thermometer you're using, you could be getting a false reading. We highly recommend the plain old floating thermometer with suction cup for an accurate temperature reading (http://www.bigalspets.com/floating-glass-thermometer.html). If the temperature is, in fact, stable at 71 degrees, it means the heater has a faulty thermostat and you can either turn the heater up the difference of 7 degrees and it should maintain 78. Or return the heater for one with an accurate thermostat.

tbh all that chemicals are unnecessary. it does more damage than it does good. just give them good aged water and they'll do fine. running water or having a filter in their tank is unnecessary. it stressed them out more than anything. they prefer calm undisturbed water.

The betta just have to get used to it, anyone or anything can get used to something. Plus filter and heater AND 5 gal+ is good for the better in the end. Do it for the welfare of the fishes health and happyness. A thriving fish is a happy healthy fish.

+MSteveYang I hate to see the bettas in those little bowls so I'm glad they don't advocate keeping them in one -not this channel anyways. I agree with most of what you say about to many chemicals especially , but I disagree with you about the filter. Any living fish will always do much better with a filter of some sort in the tank. I know that Betta's are more hardy when it comes to water parameters than most fish ,but I have found even a small filter (along with keeping the environment cleaner ) will see the fish more active rather than sit in one spot and barley move. These can be some of the best fish you will ever keep with their own personality and they can be quite amusing and can learn to feed from your fingers and (pardon the obvious quote) but they will go through hoops for you. There is even a video a girl made of one who does this for food rewards. It may seem a small thing but it can't be a bad thing to add some enrichment to the life of a little fish . Good luck with your fish and I do not mean you are wrong just I have found it beneficial in my experience with these beautiful fish

+Emily Thigpen Just a suggestion ,but do you have any airline for the fish pumps. I have a piece of clear airline about 2 feet in length. I have only 2 small tanks now but used to keep larger. Anyway I put one end in through a hole in the tank lid (like a feeding hole, When I set the cover or lid of the hole down (without forcing shut) it should hold the airline. The other end I let hang into a bucket ( One that I only ever use for my fish stuff) If you suck and quickly remove your mouth before the water end up in it, but let the water carry on syphoning out into the bucket. You can even set the airline to the level of the tank you wish to drain till. Once the water has half filled the bucket ,I usually take out any ornaments and plants that are needing cleaned and also my filter . In the bucket I clean my filter media (sponge or filter pads etc, then with an old tooth brush I have had in boiling water to sterilise I brush clean the ornaments and with an old cloth or something I wipe plant leaves and just anything else from the tank you want cleaned. then continue emptying as much water as you are wanting or needing to change -recommended usually 20% to 25%. I do this at least once every ten days ,some people do it on a 3 day rota other 14 to even 21 days ,depending how good your filter is and what your water parameters say though not everyone has test kits etc. This would be if you are going to get into the hobby seriously or if your budget allows. Anyway I hope this helps and you can always find plenty of channels on YouTube with folk in the hobby willing to show or tell you any questions you may have. We all want to keep our fish the best we can so good luck with yours . Alan

i have my betta in 55 gallon back in the days my uncle has 105 gallon with 5 betta the bigger the tank better

Keeping bettas in big tank is definitely a good thing ! And do great in community tank, as long as you only have one betta in it. So enjoy your betta with your plattys ;)

So I just got a 50 gallon for Christmas And I have three bettas The problem is that I don't want to put one In a bowl and I am getting ride of my 10 gallon because it was far to crowded because there was five fish in half of the tank ( I was using dividers

if you have males the may need to divide the tank but females havaly plant the tank and when i say havaly i mean form top to bottom in half of the tank

+JC's Fish I don't know how your fish would do but there are one or two videos on here with Male Betta's living in the one tank. If you have quite a few rocks and planted areas in your tank for them to hide in or just get some peace you can have male bettas in the same tank. I know everything in your books or people will tell you it can't work but every fish is different. If they have room to get away from each other and as I say somewhere they can quietly slip off to, even from some of the other fish in the tank at times you can try it. Wait until you have an afternoon to yourself and put the two you find calmest in together( Some folk say they have to be youngfish to do this but like I say every fish is different. just sit with your net ready to separate if it does not work. But don't be to hasty they may square up to one another but I have done it and they squared up a couple of times and eventually took less notice of each other. I have also had them where the two fish just seemed as though they were going to sort it out and that was it they had to be separated. If you do try please could you let me know how it turns out . thanks

+Katie Ellis - 5.5gal may be a bit tight for a community tank with a betta, but ultimately it's your call if you'd like to try. Just be sure, no matter what size of aquarium, to get fish that aren't going to make the betta go into crazy-dominance-fight-kill-win mode!

Hey Matthew Beard! Thank you for your comment and we absolutely appreciate your concern. As mentioned in the video, and as you acknowledged, we always recommend keeping bettas in a larger aquarium with proper filtration and heating. The idea that bettas can be kept in smaller bowls long-term is a very common one worldwide-- we don't encourage it and strongly suggest larger aquariums-- but if people decide that's how they want to keep their betta, we want to (at the very least) provide simple tips on how to keep it healthy for as long as possible.

We can't say it enough-- IT'S BEST TO KEEP YOUR BETTAS IN AT LEAST A 5-10gal AQUARIUM WITH PROPER HEATING AND FILTRATION! They'll live happier, healthier lives! And ultimately, that's what we all want for our fish!

By the way, Zoo Med also do pellets, which seem pretty good, sadly its the only thing my boy eats... apart form snail eggs.

Big Al's is a massive company with a huge following, you're practically leading the industry. Why oh WHY would you endorse the idea that betta bowls are okay? Even with daily water changes, to put a betta in an unfiltered, unheated, uncycled bowl is animal cruelty. If I went to the kitten section of Big Als and said "Hey can I put a kitten in a cardboard box for it's entire life?" you wouldn't be like "Well it's not your best option but you can! It won't live as long and it's probably not a good idea but it'll be fine."

I know that this video did try to argue against bowls but even showing a betta in a bowl is just spreading a terrible stereotype.

Separate question re:Bettas: What about tankmates? Are females easier to keep in planted community tanks?

Females are less aggressive than males. One lady per 1.5 gallons. Odd numbers seem to work best. Tank mates can vary depending on the personality of the betta male. I recommend wire cloud minnows, fast strong not nippy. And they don't look like a betta. Avoid fish that look like another male.
