Feeding My Betta Fish

What to feed a Betta Fish. Betta fish should have a varied diet to stay healthy. They enjoy a wide variety of foods. We feed pellets and various frozen foods like Brine Shrimp and bloodworm. Our bettas are fed typically 4-6 pellets a day depending on their size. Betta fish are often underfed. Only feeding 1-2 pellets a day over time will starve your betta. When bettas are being under fed they will become sick more easily. Feeding a varied diet and doing several feedings a day is much more healthy for a betta. **We do not use heaters in our tanks for most of the year as where we live is very hot and the temperature stays a constant 78-79f. For 2-3 months a year when it is a little cooler we add heaters to all the tanks. All our tanks now have filters. If you don’t use a filter in your Betta tank you need to be doing large water changes every 2-3 days. Ahh I spoil my betta. I chop up the frozen blood worms or brime shrimp into small pieces. Just toss the tiny pieces in every few days. Trying to find a good feeding schedule. I did 2 days of feeding and skipped a day, since it's colder. It's 1 day feed and skip and feed. He is food aggressive with his pal rope fish in a 20 gallon tank. He's very active for food too.
He hates dried blood worms or pellets. I ruined him!! He spits them right out. Fyi they dont have names because once i name them they usually die.

What's your opinion on flakes versus frozen? I keep hearing bloodworms are supposed to only be treated like treats, but my flakes and even best pellets all have ingredients that aren't natural to a predator's diet yet claim to be the best thing. Conversely, people say frozen comes with bacterial risks from parasites surviving the freezing process. What's the best option?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
I don't use flakes at all for any of my fish. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with flakes but personally I prefer frozen foods, pellet and gel foods. I can't say there are no risks in using frozen foods but I've been using it for over 15 years and never once had a problem. I prefer hikari brand but that's not to say other brands are not ok too.

I'm confused because the rule of thumb is an amount of pellets they can eat in under 3 minutes.. But bettas can eat up to 5 pellets a min! If I feed 3x a day, how many pellets should I feed each time (they're the REALLY tiny ones, like as small as sand grains)

We cut the cubes up when still frozen. For one Betta you'd only need a fairly small amount. Bloodworms maybe 2-4 depending on the size of your betta.

Male and females can't live together unless you plan on breeding them and even then they can only be together while they breed. The horizontal strips mean she's stressed and the vertical mean she's ready to breed.

Our Betta fish Duke was a rescue crown tail male from Walmart. When we bought him he had extremely dirty water, and a serious case of swim bladder. He would lay sideways at the top of the tank, then suddenly swim around frazzled only to stop and float on his side. He also looked very bloated. We didn't feed him for 3 days, he didn't eat the pea that was suggested to feed when treating for swim bladder. We started to feed him 2 pellets every day in fear of getting swim bladder again. He is not a huge fish, but I'm not sure that this is enough for his diet. We also give him blood worms 1-2 times a week. If you think we should feed him more, how should I step up his diet with out bloating/causing him to get swim bladder again? Thank you.

My video uploading on Tuesday is all about feeding bettas. I'd suggest feeding twice a day. I'd feed more frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp 3-4 times a week. The frozen food can be found at Petsmart or Petco assuming you're in the USA. When feeding solely processed dried food it does tend to cause bloat more often. Also having them flare several times a day will help them produce waste and avoid getting bloated.

Great betta :) I always feed my betta with live food like mosquito larvae, tubifex, Daphnia magna, moina, or bloodworm. I rarely feed them with pellets because my betta isn't appetite for eating. However, live food has so much function to the betta. sometimes I mix the live food with spirulina to get more colorful and strong fin :)

why doesnt the betta in the first tank have a heater or filter? this vid is nearly 5 months old so things may have changed but bettas need heat as their tropical fish and filtration is good for them to
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
All the tanks now have sponge filters or internal canister filters. We don't use heaters as explained in a lot of our videos because where We live is very hot so the tanks are a constant 79f without a heater. For about 2 -3 months of the year we add heaters to the tanks when it gets a little cooler.

+Lifewithpets can i ask you a question its that my betta tails inthe front and the tail they are black and i saw like a piece of it at the bottom of the tank can you please help me
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Yes definitely for that size tank. If you don't get a filter you need to do 80-100% water changes every 3-4 days. That's a lot of work!

arent there oxygen pumps and filters in the aquarium?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
We have filters in all the tanks and don't need airstones. On the smaller tanks I prefer to do 40-50% as we have snails in the tanks too. This keeps the water quality pristine to keep the bettas very healthy. The larger tanks I do 20-30% and the Goldfish tank we do 60% every 4-5 days.
كيف ؟
كيف ؟ - 8 years ago
Ive researched that many do max 20% water change... do you do yours 50% because you lack the filters and oxygen pump?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
We have several different size tanks the minimum being a 2.5 gallon. We water change 40-50% once a week. We haven't bred any bettas so no videos.

Nicee! How often you change the water? And what is the size of the tank? And is there a video on mating beta fish
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Not in the first tank but there are filters in all the other tanks. We were just in the process of adding filters to all the tanks when this was filmed. All our tanks now have filters.

I feed my 4 bettas only pellets because I have heard that the live food can give the betta an infection. How can I handle that?

Yes, I get my frozen food from Petsmart. I let it thaw then rinse it off before giving it to my fish.
Lori D.
Lori D. - 8 years ago
Is Petsmart freezer food OK or do i need special online food?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
It is possible for live food to carry bacteria but as long as it's rinsed before giving it to the Betta it shouldn't be a problem. I've been feeding frozen food for many years and never had a problem.

Do you have a filter? 36???? That's 96f which is way too hot for a Betta. It's difficult to know what is wrong but if that temperature is right that could have a lot to do with it. Add an air stone and do 50% water changes every day for a week. If you have no filter you should be doing 80-100% water changes every 3-4 days. If you have a filter 40-50% once a week. Try soaking the pellets in garlic juice for one minute before feeding them to him. Does he hang at the surface of the water?

no rots , 3gallon its not heated but is over 36 degrees here i o water changes once a week
and he has been this way since i got him
Lifewithpets

Are the fins clamped, any sign of fin rot? What size is the tank, is it heated, how often do you water change and how much? How long has he been this way? Start by doing a large water change.

Thanks for watching. A 5 gallon is a great size for a Betta, however it's not big enough if your wanting more fish in with your Betta. Bettas are very territorial and in a 5 gallon space he would easily be able to bully and probably kill the other fish. Also having a total of 5-6 fish in a 5 gallon would be too much for the bio load. Male Bettas become even more aggressive if they feel closed in by lots of fish swimming around them. If you're wanting more fish in with your Betta a 10 gallon tank would be minimum with 3-4 other small fish. The one thing with Bettas , there are never any guarantees they will peacefully live with other fish no matter what the tank size. I have several Bettas that can't live with other fish, even in a 20 gallon tank! For a 5 gallon tank I'd recommend nerite snails as tank buddies for your Betta. My video I'll be posting this week is on snails.

Thanks for watching. Food that contains fish meal, is not generally a good food. I started using New Life Spectrum to avoid fish meal and whole fish meal as it's not good for the fish.

My babies usually get two pellets (one pellet for my girl fish) and bloodworms once in a while for their food. I have a different kind of food for mine but yours looks really cool and your fish seem to love it... Where did you get it? Anyways, great video!

I got the pellets from Amazon. They're very good quality. I got them from Amazon, link is in the description box. They were recommend by a breeder because the ingredients is very good. They are a little more expensive but it's a bigger pot than most other pellet foods and it will last a very long time!
