Filters and Heaters in Your Betta's Tank - Advantages and Disadvantages

"Do bettas really need filters and heaters in their tank?" Here are my thoughts on the matter. Brief Answer: Yes Long Answer: Read Below Filter Advantages: Lengthen time between water changes Keeps water "fresh" Filter Disadvantages May impact your betta's swimming pattern if too strong If too strong, may critically or even fatally harm your betta. Heater Advantages: Heightened immune system Activity peak Happy fishy :) Makes it difficult for bacteria to thrive Heater Disadvantages: Requires additional purchase: Thermometer $1-$2 Can overheat if it malfunctions, which may critically or fatally harm your betta depending on the severity. The disadvantages sound frightening, however filter flow is extremely easy to manipulate to a safe level if the filter is made to strong. Critical injuries by filter is rare. Heater's likelihood of overheating heightens depending on the model you are using. Read reviews, and trust the best ones. Don't be hesitant to lay a few extra coins down for a trustworthy heater. It is an INVESTMENT. :) Please excuse the lesser quality of video, I am filming with my iPhone 6 here instead of my regular camera. Thanks for your understanding!

I have a male crown tail in a 10 gallon starter aquarium with a l.e.d. cover and a corner adjustable filter and a tetra care 2.5 to 15 gallon heater. Is this adaquete for my betta?

I've heard that the flow-rate and harsh filter discharge becomes especially critical with smaller tanks, such as Tetra's 1.5-gal. cube with it's included air-powered filter. Because of the tanks dimensions, and the "rough" discharge from the filter's spout--even when level with the water's surface--the two combined make for conditions that are very-uncomfortable for Bettas, and it is suggested that such a combination or even the filter alone be avoided.

What do you think? Should all of Tetra's spout-style internal filters be avoided, or just the air-powered i3 model? And is it really safe/okay for a Betta to be placed in such a small tank with any type of filtration, even if it's smooth-flowing?

BestBetta Uh... I think you misread: The volume of the tank I mentioned is 1.5 gallons, not 2.5. If you meant litres, since Canada is Metric, I understand... But it still seems to be on the small side, as far as sensitive fish like Bettas are concerned.
And btw: I TOTALLY understand--and agree--about the importance of filtration. It just seems the combination of a small tank with high water agitation, like that caused by the Tetra 3i filter, is a bad idea. But if you have experience that says otherwise, I'll follow it.

BestBetta - 7 years ago
pancudowny that is not a small tank, that is over the minimum of 2.5 gallons and more. For me personally I love the tank and you need a filter in your tank. What if the water that your drinking wasn't filtered? You would be drinking muddy and debris filled water right now. And that is the exact same thing with bettas. Their lives are important too and if you didn't have a filter your fish will be swimming in dirty water right now.

can i put a 2.5 filter in a 5 gallon tank or i have to put a 5 filter into a 5 gallon tank?? I just want to be sure.

Do they really need a filter, since you said that it doesn't really take out any bad chemicals like the water conditioner does?
Jayla White
Jayla White - 7 years ago
Neil Maharaj it is best you do have a filter. Because if you don’t you will have to do large water changes every other day, which is a lot of work

My 2.5 gal tank filter seems to have too much current for my beta! I put a sponge filter in the water flow abs also put a cut plastic water bottle to help. Any better ideas?

betta r chanel An interesting "rule of thumb" for a heater's wattage selection is 50-watts for every 10-gal. I've found this rule to be quite good, as even when I've employed "too-large" of heater [for the application], it maintained whatever temperature I set it to without problems... And dare I say, it did so with less temperature fluctuations than I might have seen otherwise.

+Diana Mejia It entirely depends on the heater you buy. There are averages, but your best way to determine the correct heater for your tank is to go to a Pet Store and look at each individual heater and see what tank size it is for. Some heaters, for example, can be for tanks 2-10 gallons, but others can heat 5 and up, and be the same wattage. Do your research and find one with good reviews/and or a trusted brand. I'd always suggest getting one that shuts off automatically when it heats 80F, so you don't have to worry about it overheating. Also, remember to always pair it with a thermometer to be sure it works correctly!

Hello, since your channel is dedicated to bettas can you please recommend betta heaters and filters? I have been almost every pet store to find a perfect heater, for the heater to be a waste of money. They're usually no reviews or mostly bad reviews about the heaters. Please and thank you.

Look for Eheim Jager, arguably one of the best heater series if not the best.National Geographic is basically Eheim products rebranded to sell at petsmart.

My personal favourite heater is the National Geographic 10w Submersible heater, it's a 2.5 gallon and under heater but still continues to work perfectly in my 5 gallon tanks. I have no complaints so far. My favourite part about it, though, is it shuts off automatically when it hits 80F, so I don't have to worry about turning it on and off myself (or my tanks overheating). As for filters, I've only used the Tetra filters that came with my tanks, but I have no complaints with them either- they aren't too strong or anything. My tip is to be willing to make the investment in a more expensive heater/filter, because it will save you money in the long run- and also has a lot less chance of risk. :) Hope this helps a little!

To betta keepers. I recommend the aquaclear 20 filter the flow is adjustable and has separate carbon, sponges and bio media, so you can stagger the media changes as not to remove all your good bacteria. The most you'll pay is 25.99 at amazon, so worth it and they are completely silent.  I also recommend the ViaAqua 50w heater for 5 to 10 gallon tanks. Also Hydor Submersible glass heater 50w is a good option, both at Amazon for under 18 dollars.

I bought the Aqueon mini heater 10w today but will be returning it tmrw for a national geographic brand. I got really worried and took it out of my tank after realizing that it's thermal safety shut-off is only if it's out of water. It has no automatic shut off and just heats and heats. Thanks for your videos!!

You're welcome! I I love that the NatGeo one has that feature- not a lot of them do. It may be a little more expensive at the start, but it may be safer and last longer . Glad I was able to help you out :)

BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
I don't think I'd have enough info to make a full video on, but I'll tell you what I use :) I feed them all Omega One Micro color pellets. I used to feed them Wardley but was told through the Betta Fish and Betta Fish Care forum that I might want to up the quality (because Horatio had fin tearing issues) so I switched to Omega One. I think his fins may have healed up faster after that, so I recommend high-protein brands like Omega One and Aqueon. You want there to be more fish in the ingredients than meals and glutens. :)

I'd strongly recommend a heater as it will make your betta much happier and healthier, and they come as low as $20. Bettas can survive without a heater, but they will not thrive without a heater. When I added heaters to my betta's tanks, their activity level improved drastically.

Great information once again. Filters are also great because they hold a lot of the beneficial bacteria that is needed for a healthy tank and are required if you wish to cycle a tank :D

There should be... it was just uploaded so perhaps it was still processing. Or, the sound quality could be lower due to me using a different camera. Maybe try turning your computer speakers up all the way? I say this because the other commenters have not mentioned a loss of sound, but I'll look into it for you! Sorry about this! :)
