First time Soldering! Fish Room Shelving LED lights

My LED light strips on my betta shelf in my fish room has been busted for a little while - when I built it originally I tried to avoid soldering by using these cheap little "quick clips" to connect the strips to the wires. Surprise surprise, they didn't do the job! So I bought myself a beginners soldering kit and took some time to learn it. I'm glad I did. I'm not a pro by any means but it feels good to know how to do it now. What do you think guys, better? Now I can finally put my plants back into the jars. At the end I mention a newly-discovered hydra infestation, anyone have luck treating hydra before? I've never had them.

buy flux it's a past that you apply to the wire helps the solder stick better. You also can buy flux in the solder as well. I give you a B for your first attempt. Great work

Hey simply betta. I really like your channel and the info you give I find extremely helpful. Just a few days ago I lost my betta fish and I don't know to what. He was a beautiful fish and his name was nebulas. When you picture a galaxy that's what he looked like. He had huge Finns and he was just gorgeous. However when he died he turned completely white and he did not look like himself. He sat at the bottom of his bowl and never moved. He would not eat. I did notice a algae that formed around his uneaten food and a milky film on top of his water in his bowl. I did a 50% water change and removed the algae. He gained his colour back but still wouldn't eat but I woke up one morning and his gill were black and he was completely white.this is when I noticed he was dead. I am looking into getting another betta but I want to know what happened so it doesn't happen again.

Oh gosh, it is hard to say why your nice fish died. He was obviously unwell and pale, sorry! If it didn't look like an obvious disease then it could have been a tumor, could have been old age, could have been so many things

It is pretty satisfying vacuuming out all the dead hydras after treating an infestation thats for sure! I had some get totally out of control in a tank I was feeding microworms to, I hope your wormer comes soon!

But hydras show that your water is good ;) You don't need to use de-wormer. Just get some yoda-snails (Lymnaea stagnalis). They are experts on eating hydras.

Oh sorry, I was not meaning to be critical. I am a perfectionist sometimes in a bad way... so I want to see perfect lights for your setup. I totally get it gets expensive especially when you have so many tanks. Your solution is definitely innovative and cost effective. :)
Simply Betta
Simply Betta - 6 years ago
Hi @Michael Ullman - I would need five Aquaneats to accomplish lighting all the shelves I had and I would need five outlets to plug them all in. What I did with LED light strips was effective and accomplished my needs for very little money. Please explain how that is sad!

Congrats. :) The key is make sure you have good ventilation as that smoke is not good for you to breathe. Also make sure to use the proper size soldering tip on your soldering iron...as too large a tip (as I found out) will tend to melt the surrounding plastic before you get the items connected successfully. Very cool. Also make sure to carefully wash your hands after handling any solder, especially the older stuff...as it is not as safe as some of the newer stuff.

I liked it better when it was dark.  Just kidding:)  I enjoy your videos and I'm amazed at how you think of some of this stuff and then do it all yourself.  I'd probably solder my index finger to my thumb if I tried to solder anything.   Maybe some of that silver reflective tape would be good to put up by your led lights.  Feel free to check out some of my fish videos if you get bored.  I used to breed bettas, switched to 90 tanks of ifga guppies, plecos and cories.
D Grey
D Grey - 6 years ago
Thanks!  That shade of red is pretty close to a betta type red.  I use a python water changer connected to the laundry room sink. I think I use 50 ft of hose.  I try to do a 30% change in 25 tanks at a time 2 or 3 days a week so it isn't overwhelming.
Simply Betta
Simply Betta - 6 years ago
I did burn myself a few times, made sure to edit out the sailor cursing. 90 tanks, wow! That is my dream. Do you have an auto water change system to help manage that workload? Those red delta guppies are beautiful by the way, I need some guppies like that in my life

I have a question. I have a 10 gallon tank split with 2 Betta's in it. The males fins have a slight curling at the ends. What could the problem be and how often should I be changing the water. Right now I change it once a week. Thanks
Simply Betta
Simply Betta - 6 years ago
Do you have a filter? I'd say a standard water change every week would be fine. As for fin curling, I don't know what does it! Some say it is water quality, some say it is genetics, and some say it is lack of calcium. I don't have a straight answer for that one

You shouldn't put the solder on the tip and move it to the pads. (Not trying g to be mean, just wanted to say.)

Personally I tin (apply a small amount of solder to lightly cover) the tip of the iron first. (I also need a new tip) then heat the wire and tin it. (Touch the the exposed wire with the iron and put your solder against the other side of the wire. [Solder travels toward heat](

The tin the copper pads.

Then put the wire against the solder on the pads and lightly push it in until the solder melts and the wire sinks in.

Remove the iron and hold the wire still until the solder hardens.

Obviously your solder joints are working fine and probably will for a long time without being bumped or moved.

If you want to up your challenge level, try soldering the waterproof version of these strips. That was a nightmare for me. (I am still low on the skill level)
Simply Betta
Simply Betta - 6 years ago
Interesting, thanks for the info! Not mean at all, I asked for tips hehe. I watched a youtube vid where someone was putting solder on tip and touching the pads, didn't know that was bad. You probably need to be careful about burning the contact points, huh?
Makes sense now to be more careful with the technique
Bob Tate
Bob Tate - 6 years ago
Don't feel bad. I started "soldering" when I was 12 but didn't actually learn how to solder properly until I was in my 40s.

I got the same idea to go look for youtube videos that teach you how to solder and couldn't believe how simple it is once you know how it works. All those years of doing it wrong and being frustrated and wondering why soldering is so hard.

I used to solder for a living back in my military days. You did a good job. If I was to be super picky I'd say maybe a little too much "stuff" (aka solder) on a few of the joints, but really nothing to worry about. It helps if you tin the stripped wires first by coating the exposed copper wires with solder before you try to attach it to whatever you're attaching it too. If you have waterproofing issues with the connections you can coat the solder joint in epoxy, and allow if to cure, before you cover it with tape or heat shrink. 5-minute epoxy works well for this. Also I had hydra in my shrimp tank. I used Pancur-C to get rid of them. FLIP Aquatics has a good video on how to do that. If you use dewormer get your snails out of the tank first. The treatment will kill snails as well as hydra.

You’re far more skilled than I am! I only use my iron to make mouse bins and poke holes in snake tubs lol I have no idea how to use one for its intended purpose...
Unfortunately I didn’t many responses on mouse breeders in Idaho but you can visit fancy mouse breeders .com and there is a collective list of registered breeders and contact info. You can also check the American fancy rat and mouse association but they are mostly California based. I unfortunately had to cull all but two females in my Hereford line. I just couldn’t risk reinfecting my other mice.
