I have a few questions about Bettas. I have a male betta but he doesn't have any company. I would really like to add a few other kinds of breeds of fish but don't want the betta to attack or injure them. I also would like to know what kind of scenery to use for the tank is there any certain thing or things that a betta likes more than anything else or is it anything? And the last question I would like to know about the feeding schedule. How many times a week or day that he should be fed.... I love your videos and all the fish that you take amazing care of. I would be so grateful if you could help me with the questions.

I like to feed bettas once a day. A mix of floating pellets, and blood worms etc. For decor, I find they like live plants, some really love the floating betta logs. http://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/betta-floating-log

As for tank mates, more mild things like neon or green neon tetras, corydoras etc tend to work out best. But really you can't know until you've tested your betta. Think of it like a dog, most dogs do well with other dogs, and cats etc. But then there are dogs that just don't get along. I hope that helps.

+Aquarium Co-Op  Awesome always good to learn more, thanks for the fast response

Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
F1 means the parents of those fish were wild caught, so they are the first generation from wild. F2, would mean their parents are F1s. The L numbers are in reference to plecos. They were finding them so fast they couldn't come up with names. So they just started labeling them, L1, L2, All the way into the 400s I believe at this point.

Yes, its the fish themselves. As they wont tolerate other males. So it would take up tons of space. That being said, they should be sold to larger aquariums and that becomes the real problem.

Good grief Cory! Not ONLY was this a pile of work, its a massive puzzle to try and find a landing spot for all these fish. I really feel for you....you need an assistant who will show up at the store when you make it back from the airport in the middle of the night.

Loved the vid! Is there any way to special order things for folks? I've got some spp on my wish list that I don't know of any way to obtain other than someone, with your contacts, being able to find...but of course, I don't want you to have to order 400 of something that would NEVER sell at your store...

I lost a Cardinal yesterday, who was about 4 years old. It ruined my whole day. I'd be practically suicidal after seeing the shrimp bag and Discus. I certainly learned a lot from this video, thanks.

Do you order fish in the hundreds because that is the minimum purchase quantity since you are ordering directly from the farms, or do you sell them that fast?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+Bradford Aquatics (Riley Bradford) Well mostly because those are the minimum quantities. But some fish do sell fast and I order them pretty frequently. My goal is always to order the new bag of fish before I sell out so I can have extra time to quarantine them and put weigh ton em etc.

Does anybody have a video where they give a really good look at all the different types of koi?  Most of the videos I've seen say, like, "There's a "..."  then you get a glimpse of a bunch of fish and, if you don't know Japanese, you have no idea of which one they're talking about, and they never let the camera stay on the fish long enough to get a look at that fish.
Aquarium Co-Op

I thought this was a very interesting video, one of he more enlightening ones you've done. I've wondered about how a fish store gets stock in. I used to work for an aquarium service company here in LA, and we would just go to the wholesalers by LAX and pick them up. Waiting for a shipping notice and heading for the airport in the middle of the night must be a pain. And speaking of "pain," my sympathies over the casualties. Did I hear right that you have to eat the cost on the DOA specimens?
Anthony Ragan
Anthony Ragan - 8 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op That explains a lot. I'll bet Petco and Petsmart have similar deals.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+Anthony Ragan Yeah, I eat the cost of DOA. It depends on who you work with. There are lots of wholesalers who cover DOAs, they typically charge more etc. Ever wonder why walmart doesn't keep their fish better? The wholesalers who supply walmart have to sign a contract that they'll cover any losses on the fish, even days after they get em etc. It's crazy they charge walmart a lot more for fish than other stores but they also have to cover the losses. Sometimes the prices are 3-4x as much a normal store.

I'm looking forwards to seeing more behind the scenes videos like this!

I've been in the hobby for just a few months now, and have been thinking about finding a second job at a local fish store. What traits/qualities and knowledge do you typically look for in an employee?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+TheLizander Basically you need to be a people person with lots of common sense and a strong work ethic. Stores can teach the fish knowledge. We can't teach someone to not be lazy, or to use common sense. You'd swear all of these things are common but they are not. Most people think they have common sense, most don't.

Because it is cheaper. And there are lots of species of fish that no one will warranty. Like Roseline sharks, stingrays, discus, neon green rasboras etc. Anything that is a touchy shipper no one will warranty. Anything that tends to do ok they will. So why pay more for a fish that usually ships ok? Sometimes the fish is 1/5 of the price of that that has a warranty. Meaning if 1 out of 5 shipments arrived in good condition. You'd break even. Now imagine if you had 4 out of 5 shipments go well. Also with a guarantee on the fish, this is why a lot of people don't pick them up right when they land. They think if any are dead I'll get reimbursed. But it still hurts all the other fish and you still overpaid for the fish to begin with typically.

As a aspiring fish store owner could you give recommendations on the best wholesellars like a top ten of who's who
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+tim adkins It would all depend on your water structure and what type of fish you were looking to buy. You have to learn and investigate yourself. If you take other people's word for it, that'll be your first step towards failing.

It also depends on numbers you need in fish also. If you only need 50 cardinals once a month. You'll someone different than if you need 200 a week etc.
martins rifts Uk
martins rifts Uk - 8 years ago
Very interesting, nice to see what goes into running a fishstore. Over here in the uk a lot of the stores have there fish delivered. I suppose they pay more for that. Some go over to Germany to pick up fish especially the cichlids.

Great vid i want to see a lot more
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+RIFT CULTURE They pay more and get worse quality. This is what kills small stores. I won't say to never have anything delivered but store that rely on that often times have much worse selection and longer wait times to get things in because you're relying on someone else to do the work for you.

Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+Adam Paquette Well I definitely do this as a business. I think there are ways to walk the line. But somehow it has to pay for say the 1,000 in microphones I bought in the last 2 weeks to improve the channel. Buying extra camera batteries at $140 each and extra SD cards at $80 each for the trip to Japan to film fish store etc has to be paid for somehow. So I definitely work in ways for this channel to pay for things.

I'm assuming you mean Bala sharks. In my opinion they are not a good aquarium fish. Getting 14-16 inches long and needing to school. Super excitable and jumpy. Even in large schools of 15 at 12 inches, they'd still bounce off walls in a 6x6ft tank.
