i just got my betta fish today and i was happy that he's kinda active. When I put him to his aquarium he was swimming around but the next minutes i found him always on the top and in the corner.. I'm really worried about him because he is my first ever fish. He has filter, light except the heater but I will buy him soon as I get to pet store. Please response to this.. I need my betta to be happy as his owner. Thank you :)

don't change hob filter cartridge if it needs cleaned take tank water and your finger and scrub them don't use tap just tank water don't put tank water back in aquarium throw it away then put the filter cartridge back in filter so you don't get rid of your good bacteria

PLEASE CYCLE YOUR TANKS CORRECTLY PEOPLE. "Cycling" is the establishment of beneficial bacteria to the tank either BEFORE or WHILE you add fish. It is much better to cycle it before adding fish though. The bacteria eats the ammonia that your fish produces and turns it into nitrites. Ammonia and nitrites are harmful to your fish. A different kind of good bacteria then eats the nitrites and turns it into nitrates. Nitrates aren't as bad for your fish, except in large numbers (why you do water changes, to take out the nitrates). Adding your fish to an uncycled/non-bacteria established tank is dangerous because it will cause an ammonia spike. Like I said, ammonia is dangerous for your fish, you risk ammonia burns and stress, which can kill a betta. If you choose to not cycle your tank BEFORE adding fish, it is important to check the water parameters DAILY with a testing kit. If there is any spike, you have to change the water about 50%. This could mean water changes every other day for about 2 weeks. Or you can add a bacteria supplement (basically bottled bacteria) and add your fish, but again, you have to be testing the parameters. Seriously take into account the life of your fish please. Don't say you can cycle a tank 100% in 24 hours. It's stupid.

Betta's are not a community fish. They are territorial and will fight a lot of fish you put in. I would only recommend a Pleco to join your Betta, and that's not 100% guarantee

Hey! Future tip: add at least 4-5 female bettas because that will limit aggression and stress. 2 are more likely to fight but they seem to have enough space that they should be okay. But definitely add more plants! Great job!

amazing tank and you did such a good job! Although female bettas can be just as aggressive as males and you typically need 5+ to limit issues between aggression so if they start showing signs of agression, they haven't established their hierarchy. But at the moment they seem to be fine, keep up the good work!

But if you're getting more than 1 female make sure you hold the cups next to each other before you buy them and if they try to fight through the cups then keep switching it until both of the fish you pick are calm and really don't pay any mind to one another then you'll know they won't have any trouble alot of people do this when buying females also make sure they're the same size

Have you ever actually done this yourself? Many people, including myself, have successfully kept multiple females together, and had no fighting. Of course, at the beginning, they will fight to establish dominance, but after that, they will fight very rarely, if at all.

Actually they do fight, no matter what. If they're in a sorority (4-5+ female bettas) they won't fight as much. They will do a pecking order (push around each other until they find out who the dominant/boss is) I guess it also depends on each bettas personality. But don't quote me on it (:

Make betta fish are the aggressive ones. It is a 100% yes that betta males will kill other fish. Female bettas (like yours) on the other hand can live with other fish.

I have had males many times in community tanks. It depends on the individual male. Some males will try to kill everyone, but some males get quite depressed on their own. It works best to add the other fish first, and to make sure your fish that will be with the betta aren't fin nippers.

Actually it depends if u have a very aggressive male or a calm one. And bettas are ok with guppies because the guppies are much faster swimmers than the betta so it can't catch them and I have seen male bettas in community tanks so it all depends how aggressive your fish is

I have a female beta that had lived with Dalmatian Molly's and goldfish and she is currently living with a big fat gold fish that we got back in November and they live very peacefully together so nothing wrong with that.... +Olivia's Animals Depends on the kind of fish you're talking about. Goldfish produce a lot of waste, and thus need a lot of water to keep the ammonia levels low. In a ten gallon, two fancy goldfish that aren't longer than 3 inches each should do well in the aquarium. Certain kinds of fish prefer having a lot of space to swim around in. Other fish are naturally aggressive and may attack other fish in the aquarium in competition for space. More water means lower ammonia levels. Some Betta fish are not very social and may want a place to hide (which isn't very easy to do in a small tank like 10 gallons). The recommended amount of gallons for one betta fish is 2.5-3 gallons of water. And with four fish, that's 12 gallons. But I don't think aquariums come in that size, unless they're custom-made, so you'd round up to 15 gallons or 20. And lol, even if it was too much water for them, you must consider that your fish deserve the best and only the best. Giving them extra space to swim around is not a bad thing.

Any tank needs to cycle for at LEAST 2 weeks before putting any fish in. And i don't understand why you changed the filter cartridge??? the one you had would have a bit of good bacteria in it... when putting a whole new filter in you basically need to start the cycling all over again...

Please, learn about properly cycling and testing. Every aquarium is different, arguing about 24 hours and 2 weeks makes both parties sound lacking in the experience department. It can take 2 weeks to 6 months depending on the circumstances.

Maddison Russell Another YouTuber owns a lot of fishes. He bough a new tank and he turned on the filter and put the stress and coat for one minute. Then, he put his fishes in the tank which was about 30 gallons. The fishes are still living in his recent videos about how they are doing. They been living for about 4 years now in that tank. My relative only wait for an hour after turning on the filter and putting the stress and coat in the water after cleaning his fishes tank. I tried it and it works. My fishes are living and loving it there. They are not breathing to fast and they love to swim around their new home. I really suggest an hour rather than 15-30 minutes because I know some people wait for just a few minutes then to put their fishes. But they actually live for long. Just don't shock them by putting them into their new home too soon. Some Pet storr employees got it wrong and don't know all the requirements for many species of fishes or animals/pets. Just do your own research and try it and if it works stick with that.

this is late but I wouldn't worry about it. 2 weeks? No. 24 hours. The fish will be fine. At first it'll be hard for the fish to breathe because it's getting used to the water. I just changed my tank and my fish wouldn't move. Now my fish is fine and happy

Totally agree with Fire Panda. In this tank, NO WAY!
Females can be kept together, but the tank needs to suit their needs! Aka, need a densely planted tank where you should be able to see the back wall, and if you were looking from the side you should see the other side wall.. I'm talking about a jungle! Not to mention, 2 females will not live well together long term. Best bet is to put a divider between them so the day one decides to lash out never happens.
Please consider more research bettagurl! :) You have a good basic understanding, but there is a few areas you need to work on.

Ventral fins are the ones near their poop hole/egg tube that point down. there are two of them. I know that females can have long dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, but they don't have long ventral fins.

Actually it isn't overstocked, only if there isn't a proper water change schedule will it be overstocked. The bettas won't kill each other, because Deanna said they are fine, so I assume they have compatible personalities, and female bettas in my experience do great in community tanks.

Nice tank. I've a few tips for you though
1.) You acclimated your fish to the temperature, but not the water chemistry. You can still shock them. Next time throw a bit of tank water into their bags every 15 minutes for a total of 45 minutes or so. Or just do the drip method if you've got the materials
2.) You shouldn't keep two females in a tank together. If you're going to make a Betta sorority tank ( female only) you'll need atleast 4 bettas. Female Bettas tend to set up hierarchy amongst themselves and if you only have two, the dominant one will continuously harass and eventually kill the other. You also need to set up lots of plants in a Betta sorority tank or hiding spots.
3.) Not really a tip but if you ever want to get live plants instead of boring fake ones get Java Fern. They're super easy to grow. Just tie them around a rock or piece of driftwood and throw it in your tank. They don't need substrates,fertilizers or good lighting. Just keep your tanklight on for about 3 hours+ per day and they should grow like crazy

Because of the gas exchange, if you know anything about fishkeeping, the ammonia will become more toxic very quickly when you open the bag. It is best to just temperature acclimate them and put them in the tank immediately.

+LovesSongz If you paid any attention to the comment, you'd notice I said "ATLEAST 4". I don't think you'd get away with adding large females in a ten gallon, the ammonia levels would probably get pretty high unless you stay on top of your water changes.
Also, yes an odd amount is better however four is enough for one to establish a "pecking order"

If u want a lot of female betta u might have to consider removing the guppy and just put a lot of female betta but know Your limit. They will fight the first few day or until they finish their pecking order or ranking then they will mostly live in peace. There will be torn fin once in awhile but it should be ok.

Actually, the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that guppies like to be in a group of about 6. I hope you get more soon. Another thing that concerns me is that male betta fish will fight to death. Plus cycling a tank usually takes weeks not days if dont naturally. Unless you added some bottled bacteria then that would make sense. Goodluck with a betta community tank :)

It isnt eating either. Im guessing it may be an internal parasite thing but im not sure. im using melafix to treat it's frayed fins right now.

That betta you showed in the last picture looks male....Pet shops tend to mislabel bettas sometimes. I once saw a crowntail male being sold as a veil tail female. :/ You should keep a close eye on that one.

Just a few suggestions:
1. Perhaps I misheard, but you said your tank had been cycling for a few days? Cycling a tank takes a few weeks usually. Have you tested your water parameters? It's been several weeks since you posted though so if you had a huge ammonia spike you'd know :(
2. Guppies should really be kept in groups of at least 6. I know you didn't want to overload the tank, but 6 guppies in a fully cycled 20 gallon would have been fine.
3. For female betas to live together, I recommend more plants to break up the line of sight in the tank. More guppies (females may go after them because their bright and have long tails) or females is a good idea too to disperse the aggression.
4. Ditch the filter cartridges IMO. They have little surface area for beneficial bacteria and are super expensive for having to replace them every month or so. I use some polyester media for mechanical filtration and ceramic rings for biological. There are lots of tutorials here that further explain this and explain how to do it. It's easy, cheap, and more effective!

tip:
cycling takes at least a month. and you NEVER ever change the filter cartridge. this cause the tank to re-cycle all over again and your fish will most likely die. the only time you change is if its truly falling apart. but even then, you have to seed the new filter media first by putting it in your tank for a month before taking the old one out. a testing kit is very handy when cycling a new tank. you want the nitrites and ammonia at 0. look up the nitrogen cycle on youtube before adding more fish.
