Getting 4 Betta Fish at Petco!

Don't worry, it's just temporary for right now, the one that's permanent is still in the building process ;) Sorry if you couldn't see the fish very well, I was just really excited so I was kind of going fast x3 I separated all of the girls though, so don't worry! They all have their own tanks now and are doing great! :D And I went from plastic to LIVE plants, I love it, it's totally perfect! Sadly Celeste died and then I got another one as an exchange, BUT THEN that one died too D: So now I think I'm going to be taking a break from betta fish for a while and just enjoy the ones I still have :) I learned from my mistakes, I know that betta fish have to be in a 10+ gallon and there has to be more than 3 of them (which is a sorority tank) FEMALES ONLY.

Everyone who is complaining in the comments, READ THE DESCRIPTION.

Also, betta fish together is called a sorority tank. Bettas can be together if they are is a 10+ gallon tank. In the beginning of the sorority tank, they will chase each other to find dominance. If they wanted to kill each other they would, if you have a sorority tank and notice any signs of bleeding, fast breathing, or fin rot, separate the bettas immediately.

Bettas can live together if they have a big enough tank, so everyone who is saying bettas can't live together do your research. You do YOUR research. Clearly you don't know anything about bettas.

Makayla Maxheimer thats why its best to keep at odd, to reduce aggresiveness,by odd numbers, thrse betta wouldnt be as aggresive as they are in even numbers, but ofc im not telling you all to put odd numbers betta ina small tank, their tank must be big and heavily planted which is another factor to reduce the aggresiveness, i have seen males getting well with female in a heavily planted tank but i know thats not the right way, but if someone managed to reduce the aggresiveness just like that, im sure this is a way
Gamer XD
Gamer XD - 6 years ago
Makayla Maxheimer because the even numbers would fight the other ones for territory, for example you put 2 females in it, and that 2 will definitely fight each other for territory, so if you put 3, it would lessen their aggresiveness
Makayla Maxheimer
Makayla Maxheimer - 6 years ago
Gamer XD Yeah, but since you agree, why are you saying that they should still continue with a sorority? By telling them that certain numbers are okay it is making it seem like it is acceptable.
Gamer XD
Gamer XD - 6 years ago
Makayla Maxheimer yes i agree with you on that, thats why i said its not the best idea to put bettas together, there is a risk, but odd numbers of bettas is better than someone putting an even number of bettas or unless if you can get a bunch of bettas with gentle personalities, i would say that they would fight each other so ya
Makayla Maxheimer
Makayla Maxheimer - 6 years ago
Gamer XD Sororities still should never be attempted. They can cause problems for the fish even in the best situations.
Gamer XD
Gamer XD - 6 years ago
Makayla Maxheimer look, i never say putting bettas tgt is a good idea, but if he really does keep tgt, at least keep in odd numbers and add alot of plants, this would allow the bettas to be less aggresive and hide from others, male betta can never place together, but females can as long as the number is odd, but not all females can be placed together because some is very aggresive
Makayla Maxheimer
Makayla Maxheimer - 6 years ago
Gamer XD No, even then it can easily end in catastrophe and shouldn't be attempted. Sororities come down to this question-- do you care moreabout the fish, or yourself? Just because the fish CAN be put together doesn't mean they should. Even in the best conditions, sororities can end terribly. If you decide to make a sorority despite the warnings given it is because of your own pride and doesn't consider any of the dangers it could cause to the fish.
Gamer XD
Gamer XD - 6 years ago
Cheese The Cowfish firstly, you yourself should do some research, even though female betta can be kept together, you need to buy an odd number of betta for example 1,3 or 5 to avoid aggression, this guy bought 4 and it's even, rip betta

Cheese The Cowfish I have done research. Even in the best situations bettas cannot be kept together. I have seen a fifty gallon sorority that is heavily planted completely fail, even with female bettas that had grown up together as sisters. They can't be kept together. Even if it might be okay at first, there is no guarantee for the safety of the fish and as someone who owns the fish it is your job to make the best possible life for them.

Why the boys are "always prettier" is because they get all of the color to attract females. The same is with peacocks as well because the females are white and plain and the guys are pretty. That's just the way it is. Btw just to let you know

And also, are your tanks heated, filtered and cycled? These are basic needs for any living underwater creature.

actually, just because they are females, doesn’t mean they won’t be aggressive. you have a tiny tank. you need more then a 10 gallon. yes, they will chase each other and try to find dominance, but they won’t usually boo each other. if they do (like your betta at the end) that’s a big problem. so don’t tell people off and say the know nothing about bettas. that’s just obnoxious and rude. YOU are they one that should do some more research.

How cruel to see how franchised pet stores treat their Betta fish. I can tell you this much NO Fish especially Betta fish like to be confined in little cups swimming within their own waste water in ammonia which burns them. Betta fish are like any other fish they like space and having clean water the myth is that they can live just fine in tiny pools of water. In the wild Betta fish live in rice fields with plenty of water or in streams which go on for miles yes Betta fish can adapt to live in horrible conditions because they are hardy fish but such treatment is cruel.

I bought my Betta fish at a pet store which specializes with Betta fish they fish were very healthy looking and had their own 1 gallon jars the place is called Betta World. As for stores like Petsmart or Petco they need to have stricter regulations placed upon them for the care of their Betta fish.

MaximGhost
MaximGhost - 6 years ago
From what I saw in another video, you can mix males and females as long as there is one large dominant female to be alpha of that pack. Make sure all your females are larger than all your males. Once dominance is established by a single alpha female, the smaller fish will no longer fight each other for dominance. So, they behave like a pack of wolves in this way. Secondly, I've heard that you should have at least 2.5 gallons for each betta. So, a 10 gallon tank will support 4 betta fish. Third, you should avoid placing plastic or abrasive plants in your since these will cause the fish to damage their soft fins on.

For all of the people saying that the bettas should not be kept in those small cups or whatever it is for a reason bettas CANNOT LIVE TOGETHER unless you have a 10+ gallon and since they have limited space in pet stores because they have other things to put in the pet shop so putting the bettas in the container is for their chance at life.

even if they have their own tanks that doesn't dismiss the fact that you put multiple bettas in the same tank, they are very territorial. Both males and females are aggressive and the reason one of your fish got hurt was because they were most likely fighting for their own space. You should have done research about the fish before getting them which I am assuming you didn't. So you have abused a fish and therefore do not deserve to be in custody of them.

The betta at 3:57 is exhibiting signs of extreme stress. The stripes down her side are stress stripes, and appear when a betta is fearful or stressed out. She is missing huge chunks of fin, likely from being in a tank with three other bettas. He colour is very pale. This occurs when bettas are in unsuitable living conditions.

TashaBasha
TashaBasha - 6 years ago
They are temporary. I agree it's inhumane to do this for more than 1-2 days, but typically the fish are imported to the store (1-2 days) in bags, then at the store places the fish in containers for 3-4 days, then bought. Sadly, many people are misinformed and fed lies, so that they put the bettas in small, quarter gallon tanks, even though at a minimum, each fish should have 2.5 gallons, preferably 3-5. The person in the video should have used bigger tanks after buying them and put the fish in their own separate tanks, but that's probably what the people at the store said. Employees usually go to work at pet stores for things like dogs and cats, or birds and rodents, but don't pay attention to the little things, like bettas. This is what is commonly said and believed and this is probably what workers' bosses tell them. This just proves that before you get ANY pet, you always need to do research from trusted sources prior to getting the animal.

Omnipolar
Omnipolar - 7 years ago
Equine ._xx That's not true. While some can be found in puddles, bettas topically jump to find larger pockets of water. And there is a difference between muddy and dirty. So Bettas should be kept in anything above 2.5 gallons but 5 gallons is preferable.

The last fish at the end probably just got into a fight it's females are territorial just like the males and you need a lot of space because like what say you were put into a space and you're like 10 for seventh grade you were put into a space with a girl that you hate and pretty sure he would fight so yeah just like the fish

PokeMaster1 Pokemon - 7 years ago
Yes but you need to let the male and female get to know eachother by trapping the female inside a cup or bottle or something and then the male will start to flare for a few minutes. After about 30 minutes let the female loose and they won't fight eachother, maybe only once or twice
Betta Aesthetics
Betta Aesthetics - 7 years ago
you need more hiding places for those females and maybe a larger tank . 5-10 Gal would be ideal for 3 but you need thicker hiding places for them to go into also I hope you cycled your tank because 3 fish in an non-cycled tank can turn bad REALLLYYYY fast especially smaller tanks(because there is a lack of established beneficial bacteria the waste of your fish will turn the water in simple words very toxic ) . Ive breed bettas and had 10 females in a 10 gal they really need hiding places so they can swim away or go to calm down.(do not have this many in only a ten gal, they were being kept there only because every other day one by one they went to a new home) Yes, even betta sisters can be jerks to each other. 3 - 5Gal, 5-7 = 10Gal, 7-10 =15 or 20 gall. The hobby is always trial and error so I hope you find what best works for you :). Also I think your male has something wrong with his fins because they are sticking together its not very common for a betta to be naturally like that. >< Your female looks to have her fins ripped also there is a small area on her face where you can see she has been attacked move her to a different tank and put a little aquarium salt in it. (not too much). Should heal her wounds :)
EmeryRose
EmeryRose - 7 years ago
The one at the end is sick and has either fin rot or got in a fight. If you leave her in the tank with the other bettas she can become very stressed out and die. Please move her to her separate tank for a while until you see her getting better.

She is probably in shock. They need to a just to more than the temperature. Haveing more than one Betta to tether in a tank is risky. It will more often then not lead to the death of most of the fish in the tank. How many gallons is that tank? Sorry if I sound harsh. Betta fish are very territorial and I would not put multiple in a tank that is to small for them to have 2.5 gallons for each fish.

Mintleaf

kermit the fag -Please don't generalize that way, it is not recommended at all to keep multiple male Bettas together, (though it can be done) but females can live together very well most of the time. Of course there are exceptions, but I believe you are thinking of males.

+Mintleaf your welcome and i am glad i met u. Thanks for telling me
Mintleaf
Mintleaf - 7 years ago
Piper Thank you! If you decide to do that great, but I would like to warn you that because it is a ten gallon tank, the betta should be kept alone. He is likely to get territorial because it is a smaller tank. He may be perfectly fine or he may attack any other fish. Also, the only kind of 'sucker fish' that can be kept in a ten gallon tank is an Otocinclus. If you decide to get a sucker, please go with one of them. Also, despite what I previously said, bettas and guppies can NOT be kept together as they need different water perimeters (needs) such as the Ph and water hardness levels are different. I would go with a 5 Neon Tetras (not Jumbo Neon Tetras, the smaller ones) This being said, the rule of thumb for how many fish you can have is 1 inch per gallon. Average size of Neon Tetras = 1.5 in. 1.5 x 5 = 7.5 + 1.5 (Average size of Otocinclus) 7.5 + 1.5 = 9 + 2 (average betta size) 9 + 2 = 11
Just over suggested number, as long as you have a good filter you should be good to go!
*Would suggest getting a larger tank though. I know it may not be possible for everyone, so, just a suggestion!
Piper
Piper - 7 years ago
+Mintleaf yep. i have a male betta in a 10 gallon and im planning on getting a few of different fish like a sucker fish and a few guppies maybe i just hope that he will get used to them while they r in their bags.... Also i wish u the best of luck with getting your other fish!
Mintleaf
Mintleaf - 7 years ago
Piper Yes, like I said. PEACEFUL females can live together. Peaceful males can also live with other peaceful males and females. It ALL depends on personality. In any situation though, they should have other passive fish in the tank. I currently have a (20 gallon) community tank with four Rosy Red Minnows, five Glowlight Tetras, and one male Veiltail Betta. I plan on getting another male Betta shortly, and two Otocinclus in five weeks.
Piper
Piper - 7 years ago
Insane_ ForYou well it depends on their personality some females can but not all same with males but its probably best to not with males but it all depends
Mintleaf
Mintleaf - 7 years ago

Hi, I have two suggestions you should think about (since this is from two months ago some of them might have changed but whatever lol) so for your females, you should have at least a 10 gallon tank for the females to have more room, and maybe add some more plants so the females can also hide if being nipped at. Also, you should never have less than 4 females in a sorority/community, and it's best to get an odd number of females so there aren't equal teams or so. Loved this video, though :)

+Donna I actually did, I'm pretty sure you didn't go on my computer and look on my search history because if you had you'd know. They actually don't NEED filters to live, my cousin has one that has been alive for like 3 years with no filter and no heater and shows no sign of stress and the tank isn't even a 5 gallon. It's not a 5 gallon minimum either, but the bigger is better, the minimum is 2.5 gallon which all mine were in, if they were in smaller, it wasn't for long. I knew that about the females but I was stupid to think that it was fine if the sorority was 5 gallon less space and only like 4 plastic plants and only 3 females, but I separated them all the same day.
Donna
Donna - 7 years ago
+CherryC Obviously you didn't or you would know they need at least 5 gallons each bare minimum (bigger the better with any animal) they need a filter to filter waste, build up a good bacteria and to aerate the water, they need heat, they cannot be kept together unless for breeding and even then after breeding must be separated, females need to be kept in large groups to stop being singled out and bullied or be kept alone.

So where did you get your research from BC you did the exact opposite to basic care.

Richard Mendez it's better you start with 5 female Bettas and they must be similar sized. If one is bigger she might kill the smaller ones. And the tank has to be 20 or larger as anything smaller will not provide them with a big territory. The tank also must be well planted to allow them to hide. Hope this helps!

Pretty sure that girl at the end got into a fight and lost. Females can be aggressive too. If you don't have a ten gallon then don't put more than one female in. They are territorial so they all probably fought for sides to the tank and she lost.
Rachel Mcalister
Rachel Mcalister - 6 years ago
Ok so you can have more than one in a ten but it is suggested to divide it. Ya she is definitely hurt. Believe or not it is also a good option to have more than 5 in a sorority( if you want to keep females together). And In a big area. Like it has been said they are really territorial so they need space. And to clear it up, yes they only need 1 gallons, preferably 2.5 gallons but if it is in 10 gallons If they are kept together I suggest dividing the tank.

Nice fish, but I think you should learn more about proper care for betta before attempting anything as tricky as a female sorority tank. I'm glad you separated them afterwards, but your tanks need heaters in them; betta get stressed very easily and that leads to fin rot or velvet and other illnesses, which is no way for a betta fish to live. Also, please keep in mind that the plecos you see at the pet store are babies, they typically grow to be very large and most require tanks that are about 20-50 gallons in order to be able to grow properly and have a good quality of life.
ThatSimpleRedhead
ThatSimpleRedhead - 7 years ago
Yeah, I know. I'm only keeping my pleco for a little, my friend has a much larger tank that I'll be giving him to later on when he gets a bit bigger.

That fish is really bad he's missing about all of his tail and it's better too put each fish in their saparate tank because batta fishes get stressed with each other and die. They could also hurt each other
Chelsea Marie Moreno

I've had two bettas when I was six years old and they lived to about three years, they died because of a wired disease that made their bellies huge. Can anyone plz tell me what this disease was
ReviewCam
ReviewCam - 7 years ago
I have gotten all my bettas from Petsmart and the longest one lived four years. IMO my local store takes very good care of their Bettas but like other chain stores they keep them in the small plastic cups, and a private store I've been to keeps them in one gallon glass bowls. As for the females, Petsmart has them on a shelf away from the more colorful males and they're probably overlooked.
Lucy Mia
Lucy Mia - 7 years ago
It depends on the individual store. Petsmart and Petco obtain their bettas the same way. You'll just have to hope that the store you're going to has a healthy betta you like. Or, you can buy bettas from a small-scale breeder; they usually take better care of their fish.

On another note, if your Betta dies, you should first identify the cause of its death. Bad water quality, parasites, and fungal infections are some possible causes. Please do not immediately assume that it was already sick. Do your research before taking action.

Female betta sororities require at least a 10 gal tank to themselves and a minimum of 5 females to have any chance at being successful.

The betta at 3:41 is injured. It is because of high ammonia. This happens because in cycled tank ammonia must be at 0 and any level above zero can harm fish
Lucy Mia
Lucy Mia - 7 years ago
+CherryC I'm not going to go into the complicated details, but the only thing you need to know is that ammonia is highly toxic to aquatic life. You can research the symptoms of ammonia poisoning to identify it, or simply buy a testing kit like API Freshwater testing kit to see the concentration of ammonia. (A good fish owner has a testing kit at all times. It is as essential as the fish tank itself.) Any amount above zero should be viewed as dangerous, and immediate action should be taken to remove the ammonia. Some ways include doing a partial water change and adding a water conditioner that neutralizes ammonia, like Prime.

In all the cost (for my largest tank 5 gallon) is a little over $100 at least where I am. I did get some discounts on some things, but if you get everything they need that will be around the ending price for everything. It just depends on what kind you decide on and if there are sales, coupons, etc. It's actually a really good investment though!
Aesthethic queen
Aesthethic queen - 7 years ago
Tanks are around 10-100dollars depending on how big the tank is, and rocks are 5 dollars, artificial plants are 5-10 dollars... Plus you need a tank filter and heater.. Those are around 10-20 dollars depending on where you live (:
Aesthethic queen

Lucy Mia

+Cookie Cat The cost of the Betta itself is negligible compared to the cost of the necessary equipment and the responsibility you're being given by being a fish owner. If you're not prepared to take on the expenses of a life, I suggest you not keep fish.
To answer your question, though, try going to your local fish shop or pet store to see if they carry any bettas. If you can't find any near you, try going on aquabid.com, or eBay. Of course, prices will vary depending on the rarity of the fish you're purchasing. Females are generally cheaper than males, although less attractive due to their smaller fins. The tail type of the Betta is another huge factor. Veiltails are the most common tail type, and subsequently, the cheapest. Do your own research on them, if you're looking for a specific type, or if you're concerned about the cost. I recommend you buy the fish you like, though. After all, it's going to be your companion until it's death. Cherish their little lives.

First of all, in a Sorority you need at least 4 female fish, al about the same age, you got a "baby" which is a different age then the rest, you also need way more plants to hide and they need a 10g min. The Betta suffering from something, I can't recall of. But you need to ISO her in API Aquarium Salt.
ThatSimpleRedhead
ThatSimpleRedhead - 7 years ago

3rd comment! nice fish they are really nice! I noticed (unless I was mistaken) that you had two females in a tank. that probably won't work out because female betta sororitys need at least 5-6 female in a 10 gallon tank. with only two the dominant female will bully the other fish which could lead to injury or death. please consider moving one of those females to a different tank and sorry if I was mistaken but I thought I only saw 2 females (not sure) lol

+CherryC ok :) also when I watched your video it was 11:45 at night and you posted it an hour before so unless you live somewhere where there's a different timezone then me, you got your fish at 10:45 pm XD. lol you probably live somewhere other than me unless your pet store is open really late haha

I had 3 females in a tank because my friend was giving me her betta fish so then I would've had 6 girls and she was also giving me her old tank but then her bettas died before she could give them to me so it was kinda too late.. Of course mine started fighting and I had to separate one of them but then the one that got attacked died and the one I exchanged her for died as well, so I'm going to be getting some other fish for now because I have 1 in each tank which seems to be good for me. Thanks :)
