Do you have to wait after you put in your conditioner
Cassidy Amero
Cassidy Amero - 7 years ago
Maritza Jimenez You may get by not using conditioner but I highly recommend it for the health and safety of your fish. Conditioner gets rid of any chlorine, heavy metals or anything else in your tap water that may harm your fish. Conditioner also helps protect Betta fish's sensitive fins and scales. I use Nutrafin Aqua plus and recommend it if it's available to you. This kind of conditioner also contains herbs that help reduce stress on the fish while it's tank is being cleaned and while it's being moved.

100% water changes are fine. This isn't a water change. It's a breakdown which you shouldn't be doing. if you rinsed the gravel with treated water you'd be fine. By doing it this way you're breaking the biological cycle and endangering your fish. Again, this isn't a water change.

It depends on how much you are feeding your fish. I like to make sure that my betta eats all the food so I feed him one pellet at a time (3-4 pellets a day). This helps so that there isn't food rotting in the tank. If you have a filter and 5-10 gallon tank and feed him in moderation, you do not need to clean it so frequently. Beneficial bacteria is important so just syphon up the substrate to get rid of the waste and water change (30%) twice a month, and you should be fine. If he lives in a small tank, you will need to do more water changes often.
Acacia Sterling
Acacia Sterling - 7 years ago
Emma Parenteau You're doing it right! You should get rid of about one fourth of the water and replace it with new water every week after cleaning it! :)

the sun is a deadly laser - 7 years ago
Nerisa Lobo Your tank shouldn't really need 100% water changes, but you can do it with your small tank every few months or even every six months. (a 100% water change) to get it all clean. if you're going to, put your fish in a cup with the old water and pour it back into the 100% clean tank so it doesn't completely freak out.
Nerisa Lobo
Nerisa Lobo - 7 years ago
+Jade Cappitelli even if it's a very small tank? since what I have at the moment is a 2 gallon tank with a filter and heater
the sun is a deadly laser
the sun is a deadly laser - 7 years ago
Nerisa Lobo okay, if you want to do 100% water changes, I only recommend doing it every few months if you really wanted to. it really stresses the fish causing it to be sick/harmed. so if you really want to do 100% water changes, every few months.
Nerisa Lobo
Nerisa Lobo - 7 years ago
+Jade Cappitelli what if you want to clean the tank like the person in the video just showed us. I know 100% water changes are harmful when done frequently that's why I'm asking when and how often should it be done for example once a month or once every two three weeks or once in two months?
the sun is a deadly laser
the sun is a deadly laser - 7 years ago
Nerisa Lobo Never do a 100% water change unless the fish is sick.
Nerisa Lobo
Nerisa Lobo - 7 years ago
+Jade Cappitelli actually I wanted to know how often should a 100% water change be done
the sun is a deadly laser
the sun is a deadly laser - 7 years ago
Nerisa Lobo I think every week is fine. You only wanna pour out 25-50% of the water so it doesn't stress the betta out causing it to get sick. You can use tap water and put how much water conditioner is required for the amount of water you're putting in. 100% water changes are bad, because it can cause your fish to get stressed out. I think pouring out 25-50% of the water one a week to every other week is fine.

if you have a filter, then clean your tank once every week. if you don't have a filter, then do 100% water changes every day. thats why you always get a filter.
Nerisa Lobo
Nerisa Lobo - 7 years ago
Jadyn Noseworthy doing 100% water changes are stressful for any fish and can compromise their immunity and reduce their lifespan if done frequently every week. 25% water changes every week would be recommended here however if you can try getting a filter it could help you out with ammonia problems

Timi Air
Timi Air - 8 years ago
100% water changes are very rarely necessary, in fact it should never be needed. 80% should be the maximum and even then only required if you have an ammonia problem. 20-25% water changes are a must for small tanks (2.5 gallon is the minimum for a betta, but 5 gallon is best.) Anything above 5 gallon should only have 25% changes once a month after your tank has cycled. Also I recommend not washing, rinsing, or replacing your substrate, tank, or decorations unless they are visibly dirty in order to keep all of the beneficial bacteria.

DeadlyxXxNightShades I agree that one gallon tanks are bad and yes she should be educated but she doesn't need to be told that her tank is terrible and she's a horrible pet owner. If someone is to tell her that she her tank is too small, they should do it in a kind matter.
DeadlyxXxNightShades
DeadlyxXxNightShades - 8 years ago
Fuzzy Frens24 Only first time fish owners use 1 gallon tanks. It's best to educate the owners and give them proper advice before their fish's life is gone. A two or three gallon tank for each betta is very affordable. Or she could take Noah Bretches advice.

That person is not bossing her around. 1 gallon tank is too small. would you like to live in a cramped up house? a tank as small as that would need much more surveillance as it gets dirty FAST because if you miss a few days of cleaning it, the fish could die from the waste inside the tank.

Hey there! Recently discovered your channel and can I just say I am in LOVE! I did regretfully had my Betta in a bowl for a while however I just got a tank the other day, woo hoo!! However I noticed your Betta doesn't seem to struggle as much with the filter as my Betta does. My filter seems to be creating kind of like a current and my fish really struggles to swim in the area where the water is coming out. Is there a certain trick to it? Does the water level effect it? Is it just my tank? If you could help me out in any way shape or form that'd be really awesome!!

put something in front of the filter to disperse the current.

i've noticed that the water level does affect the flow, it's usually best if the level is below or higher than the filter. i've seen that when it's right at the filter level it has a bigger impact on the fish. and also i think my betta is used to the current so that may be why your betta is still getting caught up in it. thank you for all your kind words also :-) i hope this helped!

♥ Hi! In this video you mentioned that 100% water changes can be harmful if done too often. I'm extremely new to the Betta world and Fish-Owning in general and was wondering how often you should clean out the tank completely and how to not 100% clean out the water... if you know what that all means! Thanks! Also, I love your videos - they are awesome, quality videos that are packed with amazing tips and advice! ♥

Natalie Lauren
Natalie Lauren - 8 years ago
thank you so much! you want to avoid cleaning the whole tank as much as possible, i will soon be making a video on how to clean it partially. basically you clean the tank by taking out 25% of the water every week or so and replacing it with clean conditioned water! that way some of your cycled and beneficial old water is mixed with clean water :-)

Nice video. Very informative. Okay, I had just gotten my Betta this past Tuesday and I have him in a 1 & 1/2 gallon tank with no filter (no heater either, I figured it wasn't necessary since I live in TX where it's 80 degrees 24/7.) and I'm terrified of doing some things wrong and accidentally killing my betta. I am a total newbie. First, how often do I clean his tank? 100% or 25%? How exactly is a 25% cleaning possible for a tank that small? Hope to hear from you soon, thanks.
Natalie Lauren
Natalie Lauren - 8 years ago
+Sarah Canchani i'll be doing a video on that soon, but basically in a small tank like that just get a cup and pour 25% of the water out and replace it
Sarah Canchani
Sarah Canchani - 8 years ago
+Natalie Lauren Thank you so much, I will keep this info in mind (: One last thing I'm curious about, how does one do a 25% water change? I've never owned a betta let alome a fish before and I want to be sure I do the cleaning right. Thanks again Natalie.
Natalie Lauren
Natalie Lauren - 8 years ago
thanks for your comment! so first off i would suggest getting a thermometer for your tank (one that sticks inside the tank). because you don't have a heater, it's hard to tell what the temperature is so you want to make sure it is inbetween the right temp. also, heaters aren't just to heat up the tank, it is to give a stable environment with no temperature swings. i live in california where it's like 100 degrees and i still have a heater because in the mornings it can go down to 69 degrees and in the afternoons it could be in the 80s (in the tank) and this isn't healthy for your betta. so first get a thermometer to check the water and make sure it is in the ideal temperature between 73-82. because you have an unfiltered tank you should be doing 100% water changes at least once a week and 25% water changes every other day. i suggest saving up or investing in a bigger tank ( at least a 2.5) but for now you can just get a cup and pour out the water and put in new conditioned water. sorry this comment is so long hahaha, let me know if you need anything else.

When putting the fish into a container during cleaning should you just use tap water? And how do you acclimate the fish?
Natalie Lauren
Natalie Lauren - 8 years ago
no, you just take the water from the tank. you never put fish in tap water unless it's conditioned. and acclimating basically means getting the outside water to be the same temperature as the inside water, so what you do is you keep your betta in a cup floating at the top of the tank and not releasing it until at least 15-30 minutes later. also, you want the chemical levels to be similar so every 5 minutes just add some of the outside water into the inside water.

hi natalie! your videos have been SOOO helpful to me! but i was just wondering if i should change my cartridge filter or not? the tank i got only came with one but told me to change it out every 3 to 4 weeks because it will get dirty..... Do you have any advice or ideas on what to do?
Natalie Lauren

yes, you should be changing the filter cartridge once every month. what filter/tank do you have? it should say what filter cartridges they use and you can buy more online or in pet stores. and thank you!!

if it is was deadly bacteria then you can just net the fish into the clean water but the water they were previously in has good cycled water with good bacteria so it won't harm the fish. hope this helped!

I think it's best if you have to do a 100 percent cleaning to keep some of the cleanest water out of the tank to pour back into the tank after you have scrubbed the sides and gravel, Then he still has some of that good bacteria and a clean tank.

if your water turns cloudy when you feed your betta, it probably means he/she isn't eating all of it. make sure you feed the right amount and clean up the food they didn't eat with a net or something so it doesnt cloud. try looking for other foods that says they don't cloud up (usually pellets). for now, you should change some of the water out and try looking into using a filter! hope this helped :-)

AHH!! no!! well, not necessarily. bettas will attack each other, unless you want to start a sorority. a sorority is when you have 3 or more FEMALE betta fish living together in a large tank. it takes a lot of extra research and prior knowledge about bettas to start one and it can be potentially fatal if you do it wrong (which is personally why i don't have a sorority). i HIGHLY suggest only getting ONE betta to start!!!!

Natalie Lauren
Natalie Lauren - 8 years ago
+Betta Bet bettas do not need a hammock, just how they don't need other decorations, but it is very beneficial. the reason a betta hammock exists is because instead of bettas laying on the bottom, it brings them closer to the top of the water. it's a great investment and very cheap!

Hi I am really beginner and I have a same tank 2.5 gallon with filter. I am kinda confused about the water changes.
Do you do 100% water changes every month? Some ppl say change 25% of water every week but does that necessary?
how often you have to change the tank with filter? and when to replace new filter?
Aly Homewood
Aly Homewood - 8 years ago
Ok, 1, in a 2.5 gallon, yes, water changes are absolutely necessary, really, most are going to need more, I do 2 50% water changes are week on my cycled 2.65 gallon, and the water parameters are perfect. Secondly, you should never change your filter media, here is why, while cycling (growing the beneficial bacteria that help deal with ammonia, this takes about 4-6 weeks) the beneficial bacteria grow mostly on the filter media, when you replace that media, you are removing that bacteria, this will create a mini cycle and ammonia will spike. 100% water changes aren't necessary and they are pretty difficult and time consuming.

I love the quality of you're videos!! Do you like that tank, is the filter very powerful? I've had four bettas and put them in a five gallon (of course not at the same time!) and they all got stressed out with all the space after being stuck in a tiny cup their whole lives. So I'm going to try a smaller tank, every betta is different so we'll just have to wait and see!! Anyone have any advice???
Natalie Lauren
Natalie Lauren - 8 years ago
the filter this tank comes with it very powerful and it's also very problematic with my bettas tail. i love the shape of this tank though and the LED lighting lights it up really nicely! if you are planning to buy this tank, plan to buy a new filter also, but overall i don't think it's worth $40. you can buy much better tanks for less. i'll be uploading a review on this tank sometime or another actually so if you're still interested in it you should watch that!

100% water changes won't crash your cycle, all the beneficial bacteria lives in the filter, and sometimes gravel, decor or tank walls, chlorine will kill beneficial bacteria and crash your cycle though, which is why people recommend washing decor in old tank water, this is also why it's not good to replace filter cartridges without adding a new one on top of the old one a few weeks before, when you remove the cartridge, you also remove all of the bacteria that you spent more than a month building up while cycling! 100% water changes are unnecessary and stressful for the fish, not to mention you, in a small tank you often have to change the water multiple times a week, who would want to do all that multiple times a week, especially, if you have anything more than the absolute minimum tank size, I have a few 10 gallons and they weigh 100 pounds a peice! You can just leave the betta in, turn off the filter and heater, than use a cup/turkey bastor/syphon to take out whatever percentage of the water, than make new water (add conditioner, match the temp) and poor it right in, and there you go, water change in less than 15 minutes!

Natalie Lauren
Natalie Lauren - 8 years ago
+Aly Homewood i do 100% water changes every month and 25% water changes every week, sorry for the misunderstanding
Aly Homewood
Aly Homewood - 8 years ago
+Natalie Lauren Hey, umm, I'm sorry to intrude, and I really don't want to seem rude here, but once a month is not enough water changes especially for a very small tank. As i'm sure you know all fish, including bettas, excrete ammonia, which is toxic, only slightly toxic in minor quantities, and deadly in larger ones.
Even if you've cycled your tank (which I assume you have, and if so, congratulations, not an easy feat in a 1 gallon) you still need water changes to keep nitrate (the less toxic, but still dangerous in high quantities end product of the nitrogen cycle) down at safe levels. I have a 1 gallon, (admittedly uncycled because it's just a quarentine tank that is empty most of the time,) when there is a fish in there, I'm doing partial water changes every other day most of the time, this is solely based on ammonia tests. My cycled, filtered, 10 gallons get 50% once a week, again, just based on water testing. A tank can look pristine and have terrible water quality all at the same time.

(Side note: I'm aware that this sounds asinine, it's not meant to be, I rewrote it a couple of times, this was the best I could do.)
