For everyone saying that you need a filter or a air pump is ridiculous. While it makes it much easier to clean your tank, it is not necessary. If you plan on not having one, then you have to clean 100% of your water each week. if you do have one, then you only need to clean out 10% of your tank each week. As for what you ACTUALLY need for a betta is a heater (if your room is making your tank too cold), a 2.5+ gallon tank, at least one plant, food, and water conditioner. thats it

1. You need at least more then a 2.5 gallon tank Betta fish are used to swim long distances.
2. You need a Fliter
3. You Might need a air pump (it's Optional)
4. You need a heater ( Betta fish are tropical fish they need there water to be 70 - 80 degree's.
5. You need a light so there not in the dark.
6. You can't just put a plant in there you need a Log or Something it can hide in when it's Scared.
7. When your cleaning your tank Never ever use soap it can make your fish sick ( I'm not sure if you did but if you did then don't)
8. Your tank is less then a gallon so when your using water conditioner only add a drop Never add more if you have 5 gallon's like I do then add Half of the cap if you have 10 gallon's then add 1 cap full.
And if you can't afford any of these things then you shouldn't buy a Betta fish or even a fish.

It is true that tanks that size are not the best choice for a betta but some betta preffer these smaller tanks. I got a betta for my 9 gallon and only a while after he became stressed got sick and almost died... today he swims happily in the exact tank. Also many people cant afford bigger tanks or even have space. I still dont agree with these small tanks but I also dont agree with to big of tanks since most have been raised in tiny areas their whole lives and big tanks can stress.

Holy cow so many ppl coming at her over the tank. Yes I get the minimal size is suppose to be 2.5g but it's better than the cup it came in. Yes it's a bit small but my betta is in about the same size and he is thriving off his living space and is rather content and that's all that matters. & maybe this was just a substitute tank until she can get a bigger one sheesh
Cloclo's Life
Cloclo's Life - 6 years ago
Tip defiantly needs a bigger tank I would say at least a 2.5gallon to 5gallon tank for one beta Also the conditioner is probably not mixed in all the way and that's a freshwater tank betas prefer brackish water which is. A combo of salt with conditioned freshwater and also simple top mix all ingredients for brackish water in seperate bowl then pour in to container

Siamese Fighting Fish need at least a 2.5 gallon tank or more, anything less risks having your fish usually dying early from either stress or too much ammonia. They need a filter and a heater that maintains a temperature between 74-84 degrees Fahrenheit or 23-28 degrees celsius. You must realize that they originate from places like Thailand all the way to Vietnam and are found in rice paddies which stretch out for miles, their not puddles..

Abby's Pets And Bettas!
Abby's Pets And Bettas! - 7 years ago
Wolf Song you are right but you do not need real plans. Sometimes your plans can either be harmful. The problem that she is made here is that because she has such a beautiful fighting fish her tail is extremely large and beautiful and she has quite rigid plants which means that it is easy for her fish to scrape her beautiful tail on it and she will get holes in her tail. Usually Live plants McCullough problem and issue and they can even cause better fish to get dick I suggest using round soft plastic plants

that tank is WAY too small for a betta! Please do your research before purchasing a pet. This video is full of misguiding information for others out there. A betta needs a minimum of a 3gal, and definitely a heater as they are tropical fish! I highly suggest a filter too.
Crystal Bella
Crystal Bella - 7 years ago
mad is not rad that doesn't always matter. It doesn't necessarily matter what the temperature is outside- it matters what it is in the room the betta is in. If your betta tank is receiving sunlight, it is getting warm in the daytime but the temperature of the water drops as the sun sets. The rapid rising and falling of the water temperature isn't good for tropical fish.
mad is not rad
mad is not rad - 7 years ago
keally1234 they may not need a heater depending where you live, if you live in a tropical climate and if the temperature stays above 75 degrees in the day and the night you should be fine

xEndiePearlx actually, it depends. If it's a big tank I suggest a heater and filter, but if it's pretty small, you don't necessarily need a filter, but a heater is recommended. If she doesn't have a filter, she just has to clean it every while. I clean mine every second day :)

a filter, maybe not, but a heater is 100 percent needed as they come from thiland which is hot so they are considered tropical fish.
without heaters, they are more prone to diseases and don't live as long.

If you use a heater in a less than 5 gallon tank, you run the risk of overheating your tank, or in the worry case scenario, killing your fish. Just buy a five gallon or higher tank, it's not too expensive.

I have had years of experience with animals, too. Animal care knowledge is updating very quickly. What was considered humane for betta fish 5 years ago is now understood to be inhumane. When I got my betta fish, it was in a pet store cup. I first though that he had swim bladder, because he just sat at the bottom of his cup and didn't move. Now I know that he was being lethargic, a sign of unhappiness and possible illness, because of the size of his cup and the condition and temperature of his water. He now has a 5.5 gallon tank all to himself with a heater and a filter, and he's constantly swimming around. Very rarely do I see him sitting still in his tank. Betta fish have such great personalities, and they are great fish, but you never get to see that if you go the easy route and put them in poor living conditions. Taking care of animals isn't really about having the animal. It's about giving the animal the best quality of life that you can. Putting a fish in a small container without proper water conditions and going "eh, it'll survive" is not a healthy attitude to have. Remember, you are dealing with a living, breathing creature. Please treat them with respect and care by making sure that you are knowledgable about how to take care of them.
Crystal Bella
Crystal Bella - 7 years ago
Christian Contreras it doesn't matter if a betta fish "cares" if it has enough space. Small tank = stressed betta. Animals may not share the same emotions as us humans but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have quality of life.

The Ninja Bettas love swimming around and can be pretty active. Mine were always active. When you go to the pet store and see bettas in a cup and they aren't moving much, then they are probably sick and/or don't have enough space to actually swim. I have a 10 gallon and when I had my betta, he was (as I said before) very active

ElectricHammy115 every tropical fish needs a heater to regulate the water temperature. As sunlight hits the fish tank in the day the water is warmed, but as the sun sets the water temp begins to rapidly decrease. The rapid rising and falling of the water temp is not good for the fish.

The old water will have good bacteria. You should never to 100% water changes like she did (except if the fish is sick) in that case, it's good that dirty water was put in.

Ashley Fenimore Ashley Fenimore Do you clear out all the water?
Ashley Fenimore
Ashley Fenimore - 7 years ago
And on shocking the fish I would highly recommend getting some type of coat for that like a stress coat or zyeme
Ashley Fenimore
Ashley Fenimore - 7 years ago
Mèng Xiǎng I know in a tank bigger than. 1.3 gal u should do that tho I was talking more for a bigger picture for example all 20 of my bettas live in 10 gals so I have to do it then I normall add about 10% of the water back including the water in which the holding tank for my fish is in but this tank would be way to small to do that I'm sorry I was a bit unclear on that
Lucy Mia
Lucy Mia - 7 years ago
+Ashley Fenimore Thanks. I don't really think you have to do that, as the tank itself is too small to house nitrifying bacteria. The only thing it will grow is harmful organisms and/or chemicals.

If the concern is shocking the fish, simply matching the water temperature of the water for the water change with the tank water will significantly reduce the stress.

That said, if it was a bigger tank, you would only do 100% water changes if the water somehow contains harmful foreign chemicals or organisms. It would thus be essential to completely eliminate every drop.
Ashley Fenimore
Ashley Fenimore - 7 years ago

animal addict

+Ashley Fenimore that tanks too small for a heater and filter
Ashley Fenimore
Ashley Fenimore - 7 years ago
+Mèng Xiǎng I would suggest the same with a filter and heater for proper care of her bettas but also any water has a cycle enough to keep it alive and like in the vid the water is cloudy that's because the cycle was unsettled and once it cleared it settles and the bacteria begins growing again
Lucy Mia
Lucy Mia - 7 years ago
+Ashley Fenimore Even if bacteria grows in the small tank, it wouldn't be consistent enough to rely on as your biological filter. If you have a small tank, just do frequent water changes and use a water conditioner that neutralizes ammonia and nitrite, like prime. Though I'd just suggest buying a larger tank.
Ashley Fenimore
Ashley Fenimore - 7 years ago
+Jack smith but any body of water even in a small tank like that forms a natural cycle it is how all living organisms survive in small puddles
Jack smith
Jack smith - 7 years ago
+Ashley Fenimore Theres no filter so a cycle wont form anyway so it makes little difference.
Ashley Fenimore
Ashley Fenimore - 7 years ago
Actually it is good to add some old water back because then some bacteria will still be growing in the tank and that is benificial to the nitrite and nitrate levels which then help keep the ph and chlorine levels low and the balance of vitamins on point:)

If you can't afford to provide the proper environment and care for a pet then you shouldn't buy the pet. Fish are actually a rather expensive pet to have to start since they require heaters/filters/decor/food/tanks/water treatments ect.
Eternal Skyy Costumes
Eternal Skyy Costumes - 7 years ago
You can easily buy a large tub from a dollar store for the same price if not less than you'd pay for a tiny little tank like this. A heater is pretty much also necessary for any organism classified as tropical, which betta fish are and the pet store doesn't care about. Yet people get in trouble for dog abuse and cat abuse, not fish abuse. I find that very unfair considering fish show signs of depression as well as physical pain just as much as dogs/cats do. It's not a toy. If you can't afford a heater and a large enough tank, a betta is not for you. It's like adopting a child and locking them in a room for its entire life without cleaning it much at all due to betta fish create more ammonia than an average fish. They also benefit from a bacteria cycle for health reasons as well as the heater in the tank to keep the temperature more steady and closer to 80 degrees. Room temp will leave the water in the tank 10 degrees less than the room temperature is. I studied and owned bettas for 7+ years now. A happy betta is a more active betta that's incredibly energetic compared to slumping around in a smaller non heated environment, it makes a VERY big difference when you change the size and heating in the tank. It will overcome more diseases and illnesses with a form of heating as well as a larger tank and heater used to create less of a dramatic temperature drop/change over time.

samy N crisb - 7 years ago
