HOW TO CYCLE A NEW BETTA FISH TANK | Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle For Dummies

To set up a new Betta Fish tank you need to cycle it first to make it a safe place for your new pet. The nitrogen cycle (also known as the nitration cycle) is the process that breaks toxic ammonia, nitrate, and nitrogen waste products in an aquarium into less harmful components. For this cycle to happen, beneficial bacteria that feed on these waste products need to colonize in the aquarium's filter as well as inside the tank (on gravel, on objects, glass as well) . Introducing fish to an aquarium without a healthy nitrogen cycle in place is a bad idea as buildup of waste chemicals can stress the fish and potentially killing them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ★★Follow me on my Social Media ★★ Become a part of the #CreativeCritters Click HERE to SUBSCRIBE (It's FREE): https://goo.gl/SkhMM6 ★CREATIVE PET KEEPING INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/creativepetkeeping FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/CreativePetKeeping/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/KasiaPetKeeping PERISCOPE: @CreativePetKeeping SNAPCHAT: CreativePet Facebook FAN GROUP: https://goo.gl/plD97d ★CREATIVE PET VLOGS YOUTUBE: https://goo.gl/ec91IJ INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/creativepinkunicorn Feel free to TAG me in fanart YOU make! The tittle is kind of offensive for people who don't know how to cycle a tank just change the tittle to "How to cycle a tank" so people who don't know how to cycle a tank won't get offended because you just had to call them dummies if youre going to call someone dummie ,YOU'RE THE DUMMIE !

its like all those info books at the bookstore that have the title as: 'French for dummies', or 'Maths for dummies', it's just a common usage term, she doesn't mean the people that don't know this are dumb, just that these are the basics for anyone who cares to know

so you don't use bacterial supplements from the store like stress coat? u just use an old filter from an previous tank with fish? if that's so first time I ever heard of this.

Yup, nowadays I'm starting to add things like Stability by Seachem but just seeding old bacteria from an established tank is enough.

So I had no idea about cycling and just put my female betta in a new fish tank. Should I just buy beneficial bacteria to start the cycling or is she gonna die because theirs no cycle?
DeadlyxXxNightShades
DeadlyxXxNightShades - 7 years ago
Ethan Rodriguez I think you should buy the beneficial bacteria so there's no ammonia spike that can harm your fish

I got a new tank in the box from a person on craigslist, and it came with cycling supplement that says "You can add fish immediately" Its Nutrafin biological supplement, is it true that once I add it, it will be cycled, but here's another thing, the bottle has an expiration date on it, but not a year, (It says it expires in November, but I don't know how old this tank is) Is it still safe to use? (The bottle was sealed when I got it)

I have a 10 Gallon tank. How long till it cycles? Do live plants help in anyway?
Urbntess
Urbntess - 7 years ago
For every aquarium, you need to wait > at least < 3 weeks. live plants help a bit. There is still a chance that there will be a peak after 3 weeks.
Don't start with lots of fish also, the bacteria need to get used to it! once you placed your fish, you should test regulary to see if anything changes into your water.

I have a 20 gallon tank for my 4 baby goldfish, a 3 gallon tank for my current betta and a 2 gallon tank with one African dwarf frog. I had 2 frogs, but one got sick and died, so I'm waiting for awhile to get another frog in case this one also gets sick. After the holiday, I plan on re-designing my goldfish tank and putting my betta in a divided 10 gallon after it cycles. I'm so excited to get a new fish!

So when u add ur fish I should give it was few weeks to let good bacteria spread around the water. And then do regular water changes right?

petstore now sale a liquid that promote the growth of healthy bacteria to help the filter cycle the water better. i've use it in my 5 galon tank every time i clean my tank once a month, and every two weeks i do water changes to my tank so in that time i dont have to add the liquid cause theres already bacteria on the water that i left wen i did the water change.

Hello

My fancy goldfish tank right now has PH level of 7.2 ( it was 6.5 but I put crushed seashell in my tank ) and my water source has PH of 6.5

My question is
Will the good bacteria in my filter die because of the different PH level ?
Will my fish get stressed if they get water change with a different PH level suddenly ?

or should I put some water in a container with crushed seashell in it and let it sit for few days before I use it for water change later?

Thank you so much!
Creative Pet Keeping
Creative Pet Keeping - 8 years ago

I used fluval cycle to speed the cycling process up in my tank. I added 6 neon tetras to my 15 gallon after 1 week and they all did very well even though it was a new tank. I have 4 fishtanks but only 2 are in use right now. A 40 gallon with two 11 year old goldfish and a 15 gallon comunity with neon tetras and platies, hopefully i will add a pair of electric blue rams. Since my betta passed about a month ago i may get another to go in my 6 gallon :)

+Creative Pet Keeping They are common goldfish. they are quite big (roughly 8 inches each). Im looking for a pond to let them live in. The big problem with ponds is that birds of prey and other animals have easy access to the fish and they dont tend to last very long. :( They seem to be very happy in their tank though and they love to sift through the gravel for food.

+sweet crista We are talking about her DIY filter using the vase, air pump, gravel, and marbles... right?
If so, you need to put the sponge over the top of the vase. the airline and airstone should be at the bottom of the vase. then put in gravel and the filter material. if there are still big bubbles try putting a sponge on it or something.
Golden critter
Golden critter - 8 years ago
+Elias Varn ok. but do you mean i have to put a sponge on my air pump's tubing?
Elias Varn
Elias Varn - 8 years ago
+sweet crust The filter is likely causing too much current for your betta to handle.Try modifying the filter output with a sponge of something. Make sure the sponge has no chemicals or soap in it. If you live in the Philippines, it will probably stay warm enough for you to not need a heater. if it does get cold, make sure he is in a warm part of the house.
Golden critter
Golden critter - 8 years ago
+Elias Varn  i live in the Philippines and its really hard to find filters where i live i have to travel 2 hours away for a filter +Creative Pet Keeping can i use your diy filter instead but when i start running the filter my fish did not like it he started to have clamped fins , he always lay on the ground , and his color is changing to a tannish yellow
Elias Varn
Elias Varn - 8 years ago
+sweet crust I would get a Tetra whisper T3i for a 3 gallon, it will not tank up too much room and costs around $15 if I remember correctly. If you have a betta, remember that they are tropical fish and need a heater too.

Good luck and thank you for doing your research!
Creative Pet Keeping
Creative Pet Keeping - 8 years ago
+sweet crista Filters are pretty crucial for a healthy tank. I would imagine that without one you would need 100% water changes every week AT LEAST if not more. A lot of healthy bacteria grow in a filter and it helps keep the waste out through mechanical filtration.

I will be making and update on my tanks sometime soon. ^_^ I't son the list of videos I need to make.

+Hayley Thompson The bigger the tank the better, because you can do so much more with larger tanks, with more species, and more fish.
Creative Pet Keeping
Creative Pet Keeping - 8 years ago
+Hayley Thompson Big tanks are so exciting because there are awesome opportunities to create a more natural aquatic setting. I would suggest varied lighting.. strongest at the center and dark on the corners. It gives the tank a look of depth while also allowing fish to choose to be out of direct lamp light. I've done this in one of my smaller tanks by having my light at a diagonal vs straight across. Its a cool effect.
