*THIS TANK IS OVER CROWDED* This is my new betta fish, which I bought 2 September 2015. He is a dragon colored red, white and black halfmoon betta. He is in a 5 gallon tank with 7 white cloud mountain minnows (red, longfinned species) and two Otocinclus Affinis (algea eaters). The tank contains a white/blue light, a filter and a heater. I keep mine with congo tetras and cherry barbs and they are doing great, my heater is set at 80 degrees and i have had no problems so you can keep them in warmer water...

the white cloud mountain minnows u have with the betta are a cool water fish. bettas are a tropical fish. the minnows do better with danios

You're tank looks lovely ; ) It's a wonderful home for the betta, but the minnows prefer cooler water, and definitely, definitely need a larger tank. The oto's too. They do best in groups of 3-4, and the 5 gallon is no where near big enough for even 1. Besides the algae they need to eat as well, in the 5 gallon there will not be nearly enough algae in a newly setup tank, let alone the small size, for them to thrive on.
I'd take back the others, and keep the betta. Things will just end badly in this size of a tank with this many little guys, but it's a perfect setup for your betta. Being overstocked in such a small space will just lead to aggression issues, or fluctuating water parameters because of such a high bio-load (fish waste being produced), etc etc.

+Ashley W. Thanks for the advice! The oto's both died recently, I've had them for about a year. I don't know the exact reason, but they both had swollen bellies...

The tank is not newly setup, but around 1.5 years old. The betta and minnows are new since September. I first had 5 minnows but 4 of them were males so I had to buy 2 more females to reduce the aggression. I agree that the tank is a bit overcrowded, but the fish are doing well (exept for the oto's).

+Lynn Velour It's called Tetra HT 25. It's a 25W heater for a 10-25 liters (2-6 gallon) aquarium. I have it for 2,5 years now and it's still working perfect!

+Can Durdu Thank you! It's a 3W filter (Aqua-Flow 50) which can filter 100 L/H, but it has an adjustable outflow, so I put it lower for my betta, otherwise the current is to strong for him.
