Ok so my better fish is at least 2 years old (maybe more), and is recovering from some pretty bad fin rot (I already got the medicine, AQ salt, etc). However, he stopped eating any food at all for the first time ever (for about 6 days straight), but he looks a little more bloated than the betta in this video.. help! My betta fish is going to starve D:
Sofía Said
Sofía Said - 7 years ago
well I´ve had a betta for a little more than a year and I would say you should do 100% water changes every three days until his fin gets better, and of course adding the medicine and the salt but not too much, also check the temperature is 77°F, and you should have a heater. Mine once also had fin rot and he got better when I added the heater; I thought it wasn´t necessary but it actually is even if you live in a moderately hot area. Good luck with your fish!!! Anyways, I don't know what to do with the bloating cuz it usually heals by not giving it food for some days:/ I read you could give it daphnia as it is a mild laxative, also if his body is swelling or has scales sticking out like a pinecone, it could indicate a more serious problem like Dropsy. Good luck again!

What I would do is don't scrub the decor but when you take the fish out try to take as much of the old tank water with it.so if you do have to do a large water change the tank will cycle faster.

Bettas need a filter.
King Ciel
King Ciel - 7 years ago
If she tests the water and the tank is clean then the fish is just fine. Keeping live plants or moss in your tank is a good way to maintain clean water as well. But even with live plants, weekly water changes is a must. And anymore than 50% can put quite a lot of stress on your fish so I don`t recommend doing 100% water changes every week.
Emily Dean
Emily Dean - 7 years ago
Her water changes are not enough to maintain that though. 50% a week is not a lot when you don't have a filter.
King Ciel
King Ciel - 7 years ago
+Hannah Renee You don`t need a filter to have a healthy fish. Just make sure you are keeping up on good water quality and you don`t get behind on water changes. And although you don`t need a filter I still recommend a heater if your home gets colder than 75 degrees.
King Ciel
King Ciel - 7 years ago
You`re only partially right. Bettas do need filters. Ammonia and other bacteria is really bad to have in the water. But you are wrong about believing they can`t live without a filter. I breed betta fish and have owned and sold them for years. My fish currently have filters but I`ve had them without filters before. Especially during breeding. As long as you are doing frequent water tests and changes, your betta will be fine without a filter. Some of the best and longest living bettas I`ve ever had lived their whole long lives without filters. It all just depends on how dedicated you are on keeping good water quality. The only reason I put filters in 12 of my betta tanks was because I got too busy to maintain the water quality. Hopefully this helps
Emily Dean
Emily Dean - 7 years ago
You're so salty that you are wrong. I'm justing telling you about proper fish care.
Hannah Renee
Hannah Renee - 7 years ago
+Emily Dean 1. Like I've said three times now. My fish is 100% happy and healthy. 2. Like I've said three times now, I check the water every other day and it is 100% clean and where it needs to be. 3. I don't use strips. I test the water properly. 4. Don't be a know it all when you DON'T know it all. 5. You're not the only one who knows shit about animals. 6. Learn to properly care for your water and it won't be dirty. 7. I take perfect care of my water and it is 100% clean. You cannot tell me it's dirty when I test it almost everyday and it's always perfectly fine up until I need to do a water change. You do not need to have a filter if you know how to care for your water. I haven't used a filter in almost 20 years of fish owning. So clearly, you need to chill the fuck out and realize you're not always right, kid. Learn to read so I can stop repeating myself. And also learn how to accept the fact that 1. You're not always right and 2. Everything doesn't have to always be done the exact way you do it for it to be correct. If you like to use a filter, that's fine. I personally would rather just put the manual labor into taking care of the water myself, and that is fine too. Have a good day. Bye. :)
Emily Dean
Emily Dean - 7 years ago
How much ammonia is regularly in the water? There is some ammonia if there is no filter, and any ammonia is unhealthy for fish. Do not call me "dear", your defensiveness shows because you don't want to hear the truth. Your fish needs proper care, and if you aren't willing to give it that, you are a poor caretaker. You could change and be a good caretaker, but that's on you. I hope you try to learn about proper fish care and the nitrogen cycle; it is very important information for keeping fish. I help people on fish forums and have hundreds of posts. I have read plenty. And it sounds like you use test strips, which are inaccurate. Unexpired liquid tests are shown to work the best.
Hannah Renee
Hannah Renee - 7 years ago
+Emily Dean Like I said, I've had him for 2 years and he is perfectly fine. Also like I said, I test the water every other day and it is 100% where it needs to be. Ammonia is NOT a problem in my tank, if it was, I would know. Because unlike you, I actually know how to take care of my water. You do not need a filter if you are able to maintain clean and healthy water without one. I think you seem to be the one who needs to read up on fish care dear. And stop trying to be a know-it-all when you clearly do not know it all. ;)
Emily Dean
Emily Dean - 7 years ago
That will not take care of ammonia, and your fish will not produce nitrates without a filter. Are you using strips? They are extremely inaccurate and liquid tests actually work. ANY amount of ammonia is bad for a fish. Please read up on fish care.
Hannah Renee
Hannah Renee - 7 years ago
+Emily Dean I do not have a filter in my tank. I do 50% water changes once a week and I test my water every other day for ammonia and nitrates. Everytime I test my water it is clean and right where it needs to be. I have been doing this since the day I got my fish 2 years ago and he is still happy and healthy. :) If you take care of your water and make sure to check it often, you do not need a filter. If you're having that much issue with ammonia, pease read up on how to take care of your water. Have a good day.
Emily Dean
Emily Dean - 7 years ago
No, tanks with filters still need water changes once a week to get rid of nitrates. To prevent ammonia burns, you would have to do a 100% change every 2 days on a tank with no filter at the very least. Any amount of ammonia is dangerous for fish. Please read up on the nitrogen cycle.
Hannah Renee
Hannah Renee - 7 years ago
Emily Dean Bettas do not need filters if you do weekly water changes. They only need a filter if you are lazy and you're not going to do partial water changes 1-2 times a week.
Emily Dean
Emily Dean - 7 years ago
Yes, all fish need filters to prevent negative effects of ammonia. Any amount of ammonia is harmful.

+pinkycheeks haha yes, betta fish fins are extremely beautiful! sadly when I first got him and I didn't much about bettas so, I got a pretty bad plant that would ruin his fins and he got sick. He had fin rot and a swim bladder infection. I did research and I bought bettafix, water conditioner, and aquarium salt. It honestly really helped and my little friend is happy and healthy. I'm so glad I didn't loose him. But anyways no problem.

:) thank you!! i agree they get startled easily and my bettas fins are so beautiful i dont want to ruin them!
emøtiønal kiddø
emøtiønal kiddø - 7 years ago
when I first got my betta, I kept the cup that I bought him in. I usually use the cup when it's time to take him out. It can be a bit tricky since bettas can get a little startled and swim very fast. You don't want to hurt them and their fins. I suggest using a small cup with a cap on it, so they don't jump off or tip it over. Just try to be patient and wait until your betta is still and I bet that'll help :)

When you do a water change NEVER pour all the water out, because it takes all of the nutrients the fish has made, so when doing a water change only pour about 1/3 all the water then clean all the plants, rocks and ect

Buy a tank vaccum to suck up all the stuffs or after your done pouring out the 1/3 of water, use your hand or a long item to reach the bottom of the tank and move the rocks around to lift up the debris then use a fish net holder to lift out the debris. And make sure you put the missing water back and add a few drops of "stress coat" to calm the fish, and last add the fish back into the tank

your tank is not properly Set up for a betta. I needs a lot of hiding places e.g. caves and tall silk plants, something to rest near the water surface like a betta hammock and some Cover from the top in Form of swimming plants.
Your tank needs a filter and depending on the temperature a heater.
about cleaning the tank: never ever clean it like you did in this Video.
1st it is very stressful for your betta to remove him. Just get a Hose, remove some water with it and pour New treated water back into the tank.
2nd doing a 100% water change and a full clean of the gravel destroy all those benefical bacteria your tank needs to prevent ammonia and nitrites building up (fish poo -> ammonia -> benefical bacteria convert ammonia to -> nitrites -> benefical bacteria convert nitrites to -> nitrates. ammonia and nitrites are highly toxic for a fish, the cycle needs about 4 to 8 weeks to establish and you need a test Kit to find out when it is cycled)

Good video but bad advice 1. Never take fish out of tank 2.water change shouldn't be all it should be about 15-20% 3. never do a 100% water change unless diseased or something like that even then only 60-75% as this upsets the cycle I hope you did before buying the betta

Haley Rose Voorkamp
Haley Rose Voorkamp - 8 years ago
+Christian Rodriguez I would advise you don't use soap as it can kill the fish. Just use hot or conditioned tap water to rinse everything, such as ornaments or artificial plants, but keep in 20-50% of the old water in the tank, I don't recommend changing 100% of the water every week, unless there is something noticeably wrong with your water. You can also get a gravel vacuum to help keep the algae growth to a minimum. Best of luck!

Then blow out the candle.  The ghost of SilversurferBlueMoon will appear behind you and scream!

You need to leave at least a third of the water in the tank. If you change it all at once there's a good chance your fish will go into shock and die.

Hey guys i just got a new white betta fish today and its name is snowflake i need to now how many times a week, month, year should i clean my tank
Maeve
Maeve - 9 years ago
I do a water change on my tank every weekend. which means you take a cup and take a couple scoops of water out, not all of it because your fish needs some of the bacteria and if you take all of it out and add new water its bad for your fish. Then at the end of each month I change the gravel. If algae builds up on the glass I scrub it off on my next water change. Also, you need to use water conditioner. That's pretty much how I do it. It could help if you do some research. Maybe read some articles or watch some youtube videos, it could help a lot.

It's not good to do 100% water changes unless you have a problem with your water. Try changing between 20-50% of the water every week. Never rinse anything in untreated tap water as this will kill all the beneficial bacteria that are trying to colonize there. I recommend getting a small gravel siphon to remove the fish waste and food from the gravel. If you feel the need to rinse your decorations, rinse them in the water you removed from the tank. There is no need to remove Galaxy during this process. Always condition the water before adding it to the tank. This is the proper way to do a water change. Basically by changing the water this way it prevents you from shocking your fish and it allows the beneficial bacteria that are responsible for breaking down ammonia colonize. The bacteria are what keeps a fish alive in an aquarium so it is important to allow your tank to cycle. I hope this helps! I'm glad to see how much you love and care for your fish :)

Shadowstrike 94 hey I am really confused on something. So if I do a 25% water change and I don't take my fish out of the tank, when I add the new conditioned water in it how do I keep him from getting shocked because he isn't used to the new water that I am adding. Into his tank. Is it better to do a less amount of water change so that I don't have to add as much back in that could shock him?

+Amélia Fagundes Oh, but I have a gorgeous dark red male betta and in the same aquarium I have 10 cardinal tetras, an ancistrus, a hypancistrus, 3 dwarf catfish, 4 kuhli loaches and a vampire shrimp. My aquarium is very peaceful, there hasn't been any trouble. I bought my fish and supplies from extremely professional and knowable sources that can say which fish are compatible and which ones are not. I'm glad I found them... :D my betta hasn't attacked anyone. A couple of times he's come a bit closer to my shrimp and looked at it and then left - he's just a funny trickster :)
I live in Finland, but it MIGHT be that the owner of "Akvaariokeskus" i.e. "Aquarium centre" might also answer e-mail messages in English... The website for the place is akvaariokeskus.com, you can find the e-mail of "petri viskari" here:

He is, and this is good. Bettas are very aggressive, and are likely to fight any other long-finned fish. You could add some shrimp... But he'll probably eat it. If he was going to a bigger tank he could have some roommates, but male bettas are always better alone :3 hope that answers your question.

I have been doing the 20% water changes every week, adding in conditioner each time and also doing a general algae clean on the sides of the tank. I also use a gravel vacuum and replace the live plant every now and then :)
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 9 years ago
a tank that small would actually require a once a week cleaning not every 2 to 3 weeks because the waste accumulates fast and by the time it is becomes noticeable it's already way to high.bettas are hardy fish and most other fish would die from that kinda of abuse.if you had a 5 gallon every 2 to 3 weeks would be correct.nano aquariums(any tank under 5 gallons)even with bettas and small fish need any where from a once a week to 3 times a week cleanings.
