How To Set Up A Betta Fish Tank

How to set up a Betta tank and what you will need. The video will show you the items needed to set up a Betta tank, and the set up process. You will see the Betta fish happy and feeding in his new home. **If your tank does not have a filter you do not need to cycle it, however you need to be able to commit to large water changes every 2-3 days. Small tanks without filtration require a lot of work to keep your Betta healthy. Sponge filters are a good option for smaller tanks. If your tank has a filter you need to follow the cycling process before adding a new fish. *Bowls, vases and glass ornaments are not suitable homes for Bettas. If you are looking into getting a Betta fish as a pet the widely accepted minimum is a 2.5 gallon tank although 5-10 gallons is better. * We have changed our Betta food to New Life Spectrum. You forgot to cycle the tank
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
There was nothing to cycle as the tank didn't have a filter. We used to water change every 2-3 days. It was a lot of work. We now have filters in all our tanks. Check out our latest betta fish tank set up series. It goes from choosing a Betta fish tank all the way through to cycling and maintenance of a tank.

I wanted to ask about setting up a new tank with all new stuff. What do you wash the tank out with, or the new plants, or the new dividers I bought from you (quick shipping btw) etc, etc? I hope to have the custom stand for 2 ten gallon tanks end to end done this weekend so I may be setting up the new tanks very soon :)
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
We usually rinse the tank with vinegar and water as for decorations and such, including our dividers we just rinse with warm water. Thanks for buying from us.

OMG THATS A NICE SET UP :D I HAVE A PINEAPPLE AS WELL! I used to keep my male betta in a 1 gallon tank and i always wanted a big tank so he can swim more and so yesterday i bought a 10 gallon tank at petco for $10 and i bought a heater, thermometer, filter, decorations, lid and etc... but right now im going to have to wait for my tank to cycle so i have to wait until its fully cycled, until i can put my male betta in his new home, but even before i do that, i must make sure to acclimate him from avoiding any stress! but anyways i really liked your video! :D

what if i plan to use the exact setup.. but with a weak hob, like 96 Liters/hr. some small live plants like anubias... can i get by 2 weeks without a water changes? like 50% water change every 2 weeks?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Filters and plants don't substitute for water changes. It takes a tank a long time to become established enough for maybe not having to changing the water every week.

Gravel Vs Marbles? And do you need a special heater if your room is cool? I'm keeping another pet in my room and she needs it to be cool
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Definitely gravel, marbles do not make good substrate. With them being large it's easier for waste to get trapped, also they have a smooth surface so the good bacteria does not grow on them as easily. Yes, you will need a heater. Bettas are tropical fish and need temperatures of 78-80f.
DevonZWay
DevonZWay - 7 years ago
what about water cycling? should you have the tank setup and build beneficial bacteria before purchasing your betta?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
This tank didn't have a filter so there was no cycle to worry about. However all our tanks not have filters and I would recommend them. It takes 2-4 weeks to fully cycle a tank however you can use something like tetra safe start to move the process along.

Thank you. The most important thing with Bettas is water quality. A filter and heater will help with that. If you're not going to use a filter, the water will need to be changed every 2-3 days to keep them healthy.

should i get 1 betta and an african dwarf frog, or 1 betta and a small 2-3 inch pleco. in a 3 or 5 gallon tank? should i just get one animal?

please help! thank you!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Eshan Shah No, the tank is too small. Your Betta would kill the guppies.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Eshan Shah Thanks for watching! If the tank is 5 gallons or under then the Betta would do better on its own. The smaller the tank the more likely your Betta won't accept any other tank mates. In a 3 or 5 gallon I'd recommend a small snail or two. The horned nerite snail is a good option. They're small and even my most aggressive Bettas don't bother with them. Bettas generally don't do well with dwarf frogs and pleco's grow very large. If your wanting more fish with a Betta you need at least a 10 gallon tank. However one thing you need to remember, there are never any guarantees as each Bettas aggression level is different.
Eshan Shah
Eshan Shah - 8 years ago
should i just put 3 or 2 guppies with a betta in a 3.5 or 3 tank
Eshan Shah
Eshan Shah - 8 years ago
thanks for this video, every time i got a betta, i did the exact oppisite of this video and my betta would always die and i could not get a betta since from my mom. so today i have been colecting money, to buy a betta and a new home for him...and this video just helped me, to prove that i can take of a betta

also in another video the girl put salt?do you have to.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Eshan Shah yes, I get mine at Petsmart. They sell several different types. I would not recommend a mystery snail a lot of Bettas don't get on with them in a small space. They also breed like crazy! Because the nerite are small the Bettas don't pay them any attention. I would only recommend no more than two. They eat the tank algae, but as yours is a new tank then you'd need to feed TINY piece of algae wafer. If you over feed you'll mess up your water quality.
Eshan Shah
Eshan Shah - 8 years ago
+Lifewithpets do those snails get sold t a normal pet store? also how many can i fit in a 2 or 2.5 gallon tank with a beta?3?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Eshan Shah A 2.5 gallon tank is fantastic! Definitely don't put a pleco in with your Betta! A 2.5 gallon is too small to add more fish. Bettas are very territorial. Also pleco's get very large so on that alone it cannot live in a 2.5 gallon. If you want to add something the only thing I'd recommend is a horned nerite snail. They are small and your Betta probably won't even notice it. I have them in all my tanks. If you're wanting more fish you'd need a ten gallon tank but that's still too small for a pleco. My website has an article on tank size and tank mates etc for Bettas.

+Lifewithpets thanks i have been needing to get some help! i was doing all the stuff wrong no heter, no filter, no water conditioner and a super small tank....so thanks! and i am buying a new tank, food, filter, heter water conditioner, and a betta! s lso one more question do you think i shoul put a pleco in with a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Eshan Shah I'm so glad this helped! I hope you can get another Betta, they're great pets. If you're using the same tank the other fish died in you will need to clean it thoroughly otherwise your new fish will probably die too. I'd suggest new gravel if your using gravel, (you don't have to use gravel) and new decorations too. You don't have to use salt. I only use salt if I have a sick fish. The key to a healthy Betta is water quality. You MUST do a 50-100% water change EVERY week and don't forget to add the water conditioner. Without that they will die. I have a website, link in the description box. On there you will find all you need to fully take care of your Betta.

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Betta Bet I haven't. I wouldn't recommend any other fish in a 2.5gallon with a Betta. The tank is really only big enough for one fish. You may get away with it in a 5 gallon, however for Corys to be happy they need to be in minimum groups of 3 . It would need to be well planted. You have to remember though there are never any guarantees with Bettas. All that being said I have a Betta who has a very odd friendship with a platy. It's far from the norm though. The video on that will be out at the end of this week!

+ParisJean That's great! They are beautiful fish and deserve the space to swim around. All mine are in 2.5 gallons, except one who doesn't seem to like all the space. I'm just getting ready to set up a 20 gallon community tank. I'm hoping to pick one of my less aggressive male Betta's to go in there with some other fish. I'll be doing a video on that soon. I will check your channel out and subscribe!
