If I use my 20 gallon long tank and use 3 dividers (so 4 betta spots) could I just use 2 sponge filters on either side of the tank or would I need one for each section?

Ideally one for each compartment. You could try every other one but I'm not sure it would be enough.

Hi there! Great work on the tank, I've been looking everywhere how I can divide my tank and I'm definitely using your idea! I have a Roma 125 tank and I've fallen in love with bettas. I'm going to divide it into 3 sections and was wondering how you would go about filtration and heating? At the minute I have a powerful eheim filter and a long fluval heater. When divided I was thinking about getting 3 low flow filters like the one you have, and put one in each section. Then maybe the heater in the middle section? What would your thoughts be on this?

Lifewithpets yeah the gouramis sort of have disputes now and again but they're never aggressive to the point of damage to other fish. At the minute they haven't touched yuuki (my betta) but I keep a close eye on them all the time. It's about 4 ft long but it is also quite a deep tank. Maybe I should figure out the space before I go ahead with dividing. Visually it looks like there will be plenty of space but I guess I won't find out until it's done. Oh those filters sound great, I will check them out. Thanks again for your advice and I hope you all have a great new year

Haha....yes that's quite a difference lol! Unfortunately gouramis don't do well with bettas, they usually over time kill them. The other fish you've got will do well. Depending on the length of the tank I'd only split it into 2 sections because the fish you have like room to swim especially tetras and gouramis can get quite big. I definitely wouldn't do a mesh divider they're very unreliable. The Aqueon internal 10-15 gallon filter is a good one. We have a review on it on our channel. We use that in several tanks. It also has an adjustable flow on it, sponge filters are a good option too.

Lifewithpets Lifewithpets thanks for your quick reply! Well it's 125 litre not gallon, so not as epic haha! Yeah I was thinking about using your idea on the dividers, great idea! I've also seen people use like a plastic mesh but I think it looks a bit flimsy and cheap. Yeah I thought that would be the case with filters. Would you recommend any good low flow filters I could use? Ok great, I'll try the filter in the middle first and see how I get on. I'll buy another thermometer for the other end to make sure it's the same everywhere. And yeah, well at the minute it's a community tank, includes a gourami, dwarf gourami, tetras, rasbora scissortails, plecos and a few shrimp. So I'll have to divide them into each section and see how they get on

Wow, a split 125 gallon, that will be amazing. The filtration and heating would depend on how you make the dividers. We have a video on the channel on how we made ours. I would do individual filtration because I think regular filtration on such a large tank would be too strong for betta fish. If your dividers have plenty of holes then you may get away with one heater in the middle section. I'd love to see this tank when it's done!! Are you going to add other fish to each section too? That would be amazing!!

For a regular filter...it doesn't have a biological filter...so i have to vaccum thoroughly...where can we buy the polyester?

If the tank is larger than 10 gallons then just make the filter bigger, larger jar etc. The thing with any sponge or DIY filter is there's not as much water movement as a regular filter so you need to thoroughly vacuum the substrate each time.

Which filter? We have videos on both on our channel. We've a review and how it works on the aqueon internal filter and a How to make a DIY filter. The DIY filter is really only good for smaller tanks 10 gallons and under. It's powered by an air pump.

One filter should work just fine. I would add more holes though. If you find it doesn't work you could always make a DIY filter for the other side.

My friend recommended Pimafix by API to heal the fins. I think it might be fin biting, because there is no decorations in the tank that could rip, i will also get my water tested and see if it could be that. thanks

Are there any decorations he could have ripped them on? If it's not fin rot or decorations then he could be fin biting, It can happen in bettas who are stressed. Fin biting can start out of being stressed and then become a bad habit that is then hard for them to break.

I'm going to get a 50 gallon tank, and I'm thinking of getting black moor goldfish, how much goldfish can live in a 50 gallon tank, + I'm thinking of getting some tankmates, how big do ranchu goldfish get??

Congratulations on your new tank! You can have 4 fancy goldfish in a 50 gallon. Black moors, Oranda, ryukin, fantail and ranchu any of these can go together. They all get approximately 6-8 inches if cared for well. Often goldfish don't reach their potential because they're not kept in a healthy environment. They need lots of filtration and water changes. I'd recommend a canister filter I wished we'd have gotten that first and not the HOB filters.(we've got one now) If you get a HOB filter you will need two very large ones like the aquaclear 110 or equivalent. You need a filter with a much larger capacity than a 50 gallon tank. For example my filters, filter over 1000 gallons per hour and I still have to do a 60-70% water change every 5-6 days!

I think the video is a great idea but there are so many varying ideas to what a beginner fish is, I wouldn't really know where to start. I've owned a lot of different types of fish over the years but most would not be considered beginner community fish. Maybe another YouTube channel with more knowledge in this area would be able to do it.
