The majority of my bettas are culls from breeders. Though I did just get Peaches from a pet store. Three bettas out of the 10 I have are from pet-stores.

I feel sorry for your loss, taking on the care of any animal shouldn't be an unemotional act, especially a pet as you become responsible for their daily care. For many folks, it may be their closest emotional bond and should be respected as such. I have found that adding a new Almond leaf after every water change helps, (take away the old one). Also the more you breed a fish, it actually shortens their lives compared to a lone male or female. Something about the effects of hormone levels and energy spent during breeding, and the more highly bred your fish is, the shorter they live, ie, the rare new colours/ fin shapes are more in bred to accentuate their best features but it can make them shorter lived and more likely to ail. I know this became clear in the breeding of Budgerigars. The average life span of birds almost halved as birds were bred bigger and with more exotic colour and feather types.

Sorry for your loss, my betta who is dying of old age currently is named Devil. I think a lot of it is genes. I had one betta that I took great care of but developed a tumor and passed away within a year after getting him. Devil is a rescue from an extremely neglectful owner, who let his 5 gallon tank evaporate to a little over an inch of water where the fish was scraping the bottom swimming and almost never received fresh water or water changes. He was fed poor quality food irregularly and kept poorly for a year and a half until I got him. He survived another year and a half with me and was definitely happy to be well taken care of. He came from a cup in petco, so he was probably around 6 months to a year when purchased. That puts his total age around 3-4 years; around where the average is. He had to be hardy to be in the conditions he was in before me though, and might have lived longer if he had been taken care of properly in that time. He had to have some tough genes to survive and make it this far. He was a very sweet fish and reminded me of Eeyore. I’m going to really miss him. I saw him slowly losing weight, and he started having trouble swimming properly. He has no other symptoms of anything other then his body failing over time, and weight loss. I treated him for a variety of things over a period of time not stressful for the fish to see if there was any improvement. He’s just old though and nearing his time.

betta + no filter + no heater = Slow metabolism = Live Longer!

+Abby Gabby not necessarily because a slow metabolism leads to digestive issues. Im trying to figure this out myself as well

I have lost four betta fish last week. My dumbo halfmoon male betta fish and my halfmoon male betta passed away. I have them for over a year, and I bought both of them from Pet Smart. I notice they were getting old as they do not swim often and they do not go for the pellets. The last two are the veiltale female betta fish and my crowntail male betta fish. I have those two for a couple months. However, they were not swimming much and somehow just died suddenly. They like to be at a bottom at the corner. Anyway, it’s life.

I've only had one betta fish, but he lived with us about five and a half years. He even survived a 9-hour move! His name was Dorian (after Dorian Gray), and I think he took some inspiration from his namesake. Lol

NOOOOO DEMON BETTA was such an icon! I've been watching Kasia since her humble beginnings haha but he had a good run honestly with his droopy fins and if my memory serves me correctly he actually had a tumor yes? He's in a betta place now ;) too soon? warmer the water the faster the metabolism, cooler the water slower the metabolism, warmer water means they grow faster initially and thats how a lotta breeders 'pump' up their fry before they are sold and used to breed other lines, I've seen bettas breeding when they're just about three months old! thats insane! but these bettas do have a shorter lifespan, keeping them in too cool a water is obviously not ok but it does prolong their lives a little bit so you gotta strike a balance keeping in mind bettas are from Thailand and the weather there is hot most of the time!

I live in Hong Kong where our breeders are from the source in Thailand, my dragon scale black plakat male Artemis was a couple of months old when i got him, 2018 is my first half year with him and he's going strong i fed him frozen live to heavily protein based pellets and he grew quickly, a little too quickly. He came to me fully silver and black but now his red wash is showing, which honestly reflects on the genetics, but he is perfectly imperfect and thats what i love about him. Kasia please come to Hong Kong, we have many a local breeder and we have a street dedicated to fish keeping i would love to show you how asia deals with fish. I must admit we weren't very moral 10-20 years ago when it came to the hobby but now fish is kinda treated like royalty now especially goldfish, people are willing to splurge on the best for their fish, i get asked all the time why do i have a 20 gallon dedicated to just ONE fish, its fully 'furnished' and im just scared about giving him a tankmate even though hes a soft kid and never really flared.

I have been keeping bettas for 7+years so I have experience with them, I have kept them in colder temperatures around 70-74 degrees. Recently I am keeping them in warmer about 75-78.

A year and 2 months ago I bought my first betta. He made me realize how much I loved fish, so I got more over the next year. Although he is not my only betta, he was my first one, and the one who got me into the fish world in the first place. He's special and I love him more than anything. Unfortunately he started showing signs of dropsy about a month ago. I've been treating him, but he only gets worse everyday. It pains me to see him like this, and pains me even more to know that i'm at the end of my time with him. ): I'm sorry for your loss. This is a hard time for me, so i' sure it is for you as well.

My first Betta lasted 5 years... (I didn't give him an amazing habitat and care as I was young and didn't know much) and when he passed I was super heartbroken. Miss my little buddy (His name was Blue Moon and was a Halfmoon for all those wondering :p). Now I own a veiltale Red one named Baron lol. He has a 10 gallon tank, heater, HEAVYYYY decoration of plants, log, and he's always being spoiled with blood worms... sorry for your loss :(

aww, sorry about demon betta, he was amazing and I loved hearing about him in your videos from time to time. I think the longest betta i've had live was also around 3 years - and that was back in the day before I understood how to take care of the poor thing, so it's amazing it even lived that long!

Dont feel bad about the heater malfunction.
I just lost my female sorority of 7 females the same way, my giant male betta just barly survived and I tried saving him for hours...

I wanted to give up, but seeing him survive and trive made me wanna continue.
I really wanna breed bettas as the only betta breeder in Norway ( as far as I know )
