I was wondering is it better to use the fluval stratum with a sand on top? Because I'm planing to get a 10 gallon tank dividing it and planting it, and I know I want to use sand in it but I was wondering if it would to use the stratum or not?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
I wouldn’t use it under sand, I think you will end up with a huge mess. I only use root tabs and my plants grow like crazy. Link to them is in the description box of the video.

One of my bettas from my divided tank passed away this morning, I’m unsure what from so I was wondering what you recommend I could purchase to test the water regularly as it may have been something in my water. And also what frozen food types do you feed your bettas? I’ve always wanted to try some out for mine but they have so many options at my pet store that it overwhelms me haha
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
I’m sorry for your loss. I would recommend a test kit. Knowing your water parameters is a good place to start when you have a sick fish. We feed frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, clams, mysis shrimp and bloodworms.

Hello!
I'm looking at getting a snail for my betta tank, as I am getting some algae.
Any recommendations on what kind of snail I should get?
I'm looking for something that won't destroy my live plants and won't reproduce like crazy. Thanks!

Nerite snails - okay. I'll give them a look. Thanks!
Ooooo okay, I'll be looking forward to that video. :)
Loving your channel and videos! You are helping me heaps!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Nerite snails are a good option. They will still breed but the eggs won't hatch as they need brackish water to survive. I have a video coming out in 1- 2 weeks on snails.

I just wanted to say that i love your channel. Your tanks and fish are absolutely gorgeous! The dividers you sell are excellent, very well made. I've ordered 3, and I am so happy with them. I would like to know if you'll be making dividers that would fit a 15 gallon tank?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Thank you! We have no plans at the moment to make other sizes. We hope to be able to in the future though.

I recently purchased a 10 gallon tank, as well as a divider from your website. I currently use the Fluval Stratum Substrate and the Amazon Sword and Anubias Nana plants. I also apply root tabs every month, and do about a 25-30% water change every week. I was wondering, however, what type of scissors do you use for trimming the plants?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Thanks! I don't use anything fancy , just regular scissors.

Great video :)
Just wondering, are there pros and cons to having a completely separated divider or a divider with holes? On the top of my head I tend to think that a fully divided tank is better because it keeps any diseases one fish gets away from the other fish.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
I honestly don't think it makes that much difference, If a fish was to get a disease I would treat the whole tank just like I would with any other fish. I've never had it happen yet though.

You should see my 20 gallon ramshorn and shrimp breeding tank. I can't get my siphon to suck up the waste because the snails and shrimp cover the floor. I have to do 30% water changes to maintain stable water parameters.

I have plants. I've been using your root tabs and also the API liquid plant food, and my plants won't stop dying. All of my floating plants have died, and a lot of my rooted plants are starting to slowly die. I've been having an algae problem also. I use the same LED light from Amazon and I have snails, and I have the DIY bubble filters y'all posted. I'm having to change the polyfiber in the bubble filters weekly. The tank seems to constantly be dirty and I'm having a hard time keeping it managed. It's so time consuming. I don't know what to do about the algae problem, my plants dying, and a constantly dirty tank. It's all really discouraging.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
It's possibly too much light and food. When I was having an algae issue in the 75 gallon tank I only put my lights on for 2-3 hours I went to feeding the fish every other day and I added a lot more plants. Within a few weeks the algae was gone and I gradually upped the time my light were on to 6 hours a day and feeding the fish 1-2 a day. When it comes to algae and plants dying it can be so many different factors that it's difficult to pinpoint the one thing causing it. You just have to keep playing around with different things.

Lifewithpets Also my narite snails love pooping on my cholla wood as well. Lol
Brenna Saxton

Lifewithpets I have a 10 gallons divided betta tank. One betta on each side. I feed once per day, and they always eat all of their food. My lights are on about 6 hours a day. Maybe 6 1/2. I have white sand from Petco. I have to do them every 3-4 days. I had anacharis and frogbit and water lettuce, but they all died. And right now i have different kinds of Anubius, I have Java Fern, and I have a few amazon sword species. I also have Marimo moss balls, and they have brown patches on them.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
What size is the tank? What fish are in the tank? How often and how much do you feed? How long are you lights on? What substrate do you use? How often do you water change? What plants do you have?

this may be a dumb question but I've heard differing opinions, do you need to add prime/water conditioner to the new water before you add it to your tank after a water change or can you fill your tank and then add prime after you refill the tank? I have heard either way is fine since your fish won't be exposed to the chlorine for very long, but I'm not sure. love your channel! :)
Denise Pollitt
Denise Pollitt - 6 years ago
BrokenWings1018 . On the contrary, it's a very good question. I agree with Sheila. I never expose my fish to chlorine unnecessarily, even for a few seconds.

Lifewithpets thank you!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
There are no dumb questions here. I would not add untreated water to a tank with fish in even for a few minutes. I add the prime to the tank or jug and then add the fresh tap water in.

Thank you. No I wouldn’t recommend it for a male and female. The hormones they release into the water cause stress on the bettas.

It really depends on the males! I have two that don't bother with each other except for a very occasional flare when they catch glares. Life with pets also sells a divider that's completely solid, no holes, bare in mind that will require filtration on each side. (Though I prefer filtration on each side regardless)
