Kawii Kittens t depends on yhe tempersture in yhe tank. If it is within the ideal living parameters of betta fish, then no nred, if it's not or there are flictuations in the temperature of your tank, then it's best to get one.

Important things you need:

1: you need to change 100% water every week and clean the tank (do not use filtered water or drinking water) use tap water by leaving the water for 2days before putting your betta fish into the water (If you do decorated tank and you dont want to change 100% water too often, so you dont need follow my tips on step 1, you may find other way else but step 3 you still need it anyway). FYI each type of fish can live in different water condition such as ph. and ect. that is why you need step 3, the betta live in the water condition like that in nature (bit of yellow water color) if you use LED light it turns bright and beautiful for you eyes anyway, i am sure some ppl doesn't like yellow water but need to.

2: pure salt (without iodide) just 1/3 or 1/4's teaspoon for all about under 10 liters tank (Salt is Optional)

3: you importantly need Terminalia catappa dry leaf (you may find a product online from Thailand, some shop is selling this dry leaf into a tea bag, but some shop is selling packs of dry leaf), just put about 3"inch of dry leaf into all about under 3 liters tank, (Just 24hrs then take it out), (do this the water will turn yellow) it helps adjust ph., make your betta lively, kills some types of bacteria and parasite, and else, there are researched paper in Thai but not sure you can find it in English or not. (The dry leaf must preserved by sun light and clean through water again before use). This could do at same time in step1 is that prepared water before use or put dry leaf the same time you put your fish into the tank.

*1, 2 and 3 do this every time you change water and every week (a bigger tank like 20 liters above could be up to 10days for livable water condition for your fish, 2weeks is too long!
*Bear in mind the betta is a fish from the still water in the nature, but you can use the bubble in the purpose of retaining livable water condition but not too strong bubble
*with some water plants is great
*do not light on all the time
*keep the water around 27c
*water level should be between 15cm to 60cm, not too deep
*your betta need at least one friend to see each other, this is the exercise for your betta fish
*you need temperature adjustment device in winter season

Wrong. Never ever clean the tank 100% that stresses them out too much, if anything at most 85%.

Your plant on the left is sharp. every one is an expert these days. dont know what to say. you talk about treatment for an injury but dont know how to prevent it. anyway that plant may tear the fish's fins.

My betta stopped eating for the past 3 days or so, so his food would pile up and i would clean it out but now i am noticing about 1 cm of fin rot on all his fins. At least i think its fin rot... His fins were smooth before but not they are torn. I used to have plants but now i only have one smooth plastic rock hide out in his tank. It is heated with a filter. He is making bubble nests which he started doing this week. I keep good care of him but i am worried my cat might be stressing him out? Please help.

Turning your filter off will help cure the fin rot
Ashley Long
Ashley Long - 6 years ago
Respectfully, there are ways to adjust the current even if it's a home remedy way. The filter has very healthy bacteria build up in it that fight against ammonia- which causes the fin rot. It shouldn't be turned off

It reduces the flow of the water, Betta's aren't fans of currents. Keep an air stone on though.

USE YOUR GLUTES I'm in California too. Keep the fish in the warmest room you have that has natural light ( not hot, direct sunlight), also where it can see activity -- people ( if possible). If he's in a bowl, you must change the water every few days. If he is in a tank you can get tubing and air-stones at the 99cents store and free or cheap supplies to make your own betta tank filtration system. Seek videos on this (how to make a betta tank filter). There are plenty. If you cannot get tbe supplies for a homemade filter, just replace some of the tank water with room temperature water every week (10-20%). Don't forget your de-clorinator / treatment before you change water.

If the Betta is in a community tank, like mine is and is experiencing fin rot, should I quarantine him to a smaller tank to apply the meds until he is cured, or let him stay in the tank and just treat that one? He is in a nice 65 gallon with friendly fish and was doing great, always exploring his vast space. The water is always clean, with regular water changes done. There is a heater, he is constantly in 77-78 degree water. Everything was fine until I introduced the Yoyo Loach to fix a snail problem. The Loach did its; job, but it began harassing the betta and tore its fins! The loach is returned to the store, but it looks like the damage is done. The betta is sitting at the bottom of the tank, fins looking horrible, and obviously stressed. If I can get an answer for my quarantine question, I'd really appreciate it, thanks!

P.S. It's not 100% that he has fin rot but with the way he is acting and how his fins look, I'm very sure he is susceptible to fin rot and it might have already started. Just wanna be safe and catch it early if it is developing.

The best way to avoid torn or rot fins is put the betta in a bare bottom round tank without decorations like the professional betta fish farmers in Thailand. Their long fins are constantly rubbing the gravel and sharp decorations that is why their fins are torn.
Torn fins will promote fin rot.

No hiding places will cause stress for your fish and in turn a weak immune System. Boredom can also cause them to bite at their fins which will lead to a torn fin anyway. Together plus the obvious bacterial environment they create will cause fin rot anyways despite not having decorations. I’d say make sure whatever you put in is not rigid or sharp at all. Live plants are great also a new decoration now and then just as long as you inspect them inside and out. To me bettas seem active and curious when they are doing well so to provide them with things to explore and hide in seems to me at least like a much better life, although maybe that is just simply sense I am a human and not a fish.

Frankie Hernandez I bought a five gallon tank on sale at a garage sale and I saw the same tank at Walmart for about $20. If your fish is sick buy some aquarium salt and maybe get a ph check. If it doesn't help you maybe you can google the disease like does you fish eat properly, how long you change the tank, or you see and white/ black dots on you betta fish, etc

Question: how much aquarium salt should I add to my 10gallon and my 30gallon. I would greatly appreciate a response. Thanks.
Andrea Calleros
Andrea Calleros - 7 years ago
Marlon Quintana 1 teaspoon per gallon, but never compound doses or you will kill your fish. Only replace salt when you take out water, don't add more if you're just adding to make up for the evaporation.

I'm always concerned about the temperature of my 10 gal betta tank. I have the submersible thermometer and it always reads right at 80 F...which is weird, because it seems to be the perfect temperature for Bettas, and i'm not even using any water heaters. My house is always at 74-75 F according to the thermostat, although my room is usually warmer but definitely at around 75 F....I've taken out the thermometer and just that causes it to go down to around 74 F just like the temperature of my home (meaning that the thermometer is not broken and is accurate). I find it so hard to believe that the tank just happens to be at perfect temperature when practically 100% of people everywhere always recommend water heaters as a MUST....just what kind of air conditioning do all you psychos have to warrant this.
Ismael
Ismael - 7 years ago
I've recently upgraded to a 20 gallon Long and I've found that it's not self-sustainable with just room temperature alone now. Need a heater now :O Combining my two smaller-rated, cheap heaters wasn't enough either. Needed a better, 50watt heater.
Nicole Hitt
Nicole Hitt - 7 years ago
VulcanXIV that's great! And I'm big in bettas and other fish I've had them for years I've never rlly said having a heaters is a must simply because as long as your tank is warm from where you live no need for one the only worries for me is if you get a cold drought or something during the winter or out of no where I don't think you need a specific air physic?:/

Could you please tell me what type of filter you have in your tank? I have a 3.5 gallon tank (which came with a crap-quality filter), so I am looking for a new one that isn't too powerful. Btw, thank you for uploading a video on this. I am currently trying to figure out if my Betta simply has a damaged tail or actual tail rot (there are no spots, just frayed ends). Even if he doesn't have a fungal problem, do you think adding salt to his water would help?
