In this video I am going to show you how I clean my tank and prepare it for my male betta fish. This tank got to a pretty bad condition..it even smelled bad because my pet-sitter overfed my fish and there was a lot of rotting fish food in the tank. I decided that the best thing to do would be to start over ALMOST from scratch. The tank is so scuzzy and the levels are "through the roof" because you have no FILTER in there.

you know that bubble filter thing yeah, that's a filter hunty. Also, not even a filter can save that fish from the person she let care for her fish.

would putting an aquaclear 20 in my 5.5 gallon betta tank be too much current for the betta??? if i turn the flow down to the lowest?? please give your opinion. i can't find any filter that anyone recommends

i use a small sponge filter... i like them more than any other filters I have tried :)

If you clean the whole tank you won't have to cycle it again as long as you don't clean or replace the filter cartilage. The filter holds the whole cycle together. Sure you would have gotten rid of some bacteria but not all of it, or at least not the important stuff.

Do you have to use new sponge every time you clean the tank? Or you can use the same one you used last time?

Epp Vallikivi i think you can use the same sponge. just wash the sponge under the tap and let it dry and you should be good

Can you save most of the old water like 70% and just wash the tank and substrate in warm water before putting the tank water back? Would that mess with the cycle or would the bacteria already in the water, on the plants and wood be enough to stay stable? I wouldn't wash the objects in the tank, simply put it in a bucket with the old water while I wash. Feedback is much appreciated!

T-Zay you don't need to save any water since the beneficial bacteria live on the surfaces of the tank such as the tank walls, gravel, plants, especially the filter (that's where like 90% of the bacteria is so don't mess with the filter) and your cycle shouldn't have an issue. It's just that if your betta has been living in this ammonia, nitrite, nitrate filled water he/she will be stressed from the sudden change.

Hmmmm.... gotcha! I've taken my 5 gallons, saved 50% of the water, washed out the tank and substrate with warm water then replace everything with 50% fresh, conditioned water and the 50% old water. Seems to work for me so far. All the best with your fish and thanks for your feedback. The more info shared the better!

Not an expert, but I have kept bettas and other fish for over 10 years now. Usually with smaller tanks (less than 5 gallons) I take the decor out and put it in a bucket with the majority of the tank water. Then I clean the substrate/tank and replace the water. It has never caused problems with my fish, and while I don't monitor the water too closely, as far as I know it hasn't ever seemed to fully disrupt the cycle.

also make sure the sponge is not chemically treated, like some sponges come with an anti mold thing or soap already in the sponge and i know people who have killed a lot of fish at once with them

Why not go bare bottom ? My 10 gallon is a bare bottom, and I can get all of the gunk out before I even hit the 3 gallon mark. It's a breeze for non planted tanks or java fern anubias type plants.
