How to do a Water Change on a Betta Fish Tank

How we do a water change on a 2.5 gallon Betta fish tank and our 10 gallon divided tank. We do water changes on all our betta tanks once a week. Depending on the tank we do 25-50% water change. There are many ways of doing a water change and this is what works for us. We don't remove the betta from the tank as we find it stress them out more to remove them. The plants in the 2.5 gallon tank is Jungle Val. The plants in the 10 gallon divided tank are Amazon sword, Anubias and Water Lettuce. We rinse the sponge filters out once a month. With a planted tank, how often do you vacuum the sand? I've heard the fish waste is used by the plants for fertilizer. My tank is 20 gallon with Amazon sword and Anubias
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I vacuum the sand everytime. In a planted tank with gravel or plant substrate you would not need to vacuum but with sand it needs to be disturbed on a regular basis. It is best to feed the plants with root tabs especially in a sand tank.

Lifewithpets Thanks
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Goldfish produce a lot of waste. A 10 gallon is a little small for a goldfish so it will be difficult to keep the water parameters good. I'd suggest either a bigger tank or 70-80% water changes 2-3 times a week. This should help. Also make sure not to overfed your goldfish.

I would like to order one of your 10 gallon dividers, which do you like better the one with holes or without?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I honestly don't really have a preference. Both work really well. If you have a no holes you will need filtration and heater on both sides. If your bettas are easily stressed out then the no holes would be better because then they can't really see each other.

I always try to siphon the gravel and clean the tanks, however I really have to rapidly shake the siphon in the tank the whole time for water to travel to the bucket. If I try to siphon the gravel to clean up the dirt, it doesn't take up any water or dirt. Any suggestions?

im lost. for a certain time now, I am talling people to get like 5 or 6 gallon for a betta, but what is the actual size they need? I go by the rule that bigger mean better, but your fish seem's super happy in this little 2,5 and he seems to have lot's of things to do to be honnest... so I will say this : as a personnal opinion, if you have the space and money, bigger tank is better, specially if you are a begginer, but I never kept bettas except one with goldfish (I know, bad idea, I was young and stupid), but you seem to know what you are doing, so 2.5 is okay?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
2.5 gallons is the minimum. Our Betta tanks range from 2.5 gallons to 75 gallons. I personally think 2.5 gallons is fine as long as the tank is planted and decorated to suit the bettas needs.

No filter:/ But she has her heater. I can get a filter and certainly do that. Thnx!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Does the tank have a filter, if so I'd recommend only doing 50% 3 times a week for 3-4 weeks. After that you should be cycled. You can also add tetra safe start that would help the process along too.

what i do is kink the hose with my left hand. i sort of bend it over to slow the flow. even kinked it still sucks up yucky stuff, it just does it slower. you'll want to bend the hose on the "output" side, not the intake side.
