How to take care of a BETTA FISH

What type of water conditions should a Betta fish have? What should Betta fish eat? This is a basic beginner Betta fish care guide. I hope this helps you take better care of your pet fish. Scientific name: Betta splendens Lifespan: 3 – 10 years (In captivity) Betta Fish need: Filter - but make sure the current is not too strong for your betta. Heater - Betta fish like water temperatures between 78-82ºF/24-27ºC Places to hide and feel secure. Avoid jagged rocks or decorations Did you know? The betta got its name from an ancient clan of warriors, called the "Bettah." The fish were given a combatant name after the fighting fish became popular in the mid-1800s. In fact, the sport became so renowned in Thailand that the former King of Siam had it regulated and taxed! Spectators of the sport based their bets on the bravery of the fish, rather than the damage inflicted by the victor. Endfinx not to stress you out but I had a perfectly happy Betta fish, had him for a year. I took him to my friends house when I was away and before I left her house that day my fish was dead. Try having them come to your house while you are away. The fish will stay in it’s usual location and won’t get stressed then :)

Do you really need a filter because I just got a guppy tank and do not have that much money but I have fallen in love with this betta and I’m sacred that they will sell him to someone else I have a 19 litres tank for him and a heater how long can he survive with that

(He is not in a good condition so I want to get him before he died or they sell him to someone else)
(Plz answer)

a fish can survive without a filter if the water conditions are great.
I have 9 tanks and only 2 have filters (because i cannot afford that many). But if you do not have a filter i reccomend to get some live plants as it will act as a natural filter
and how is he doing?
And who is that they?

The filter in my betters tank was WAY too powerful and pushed the little guy around, fortunately I found some of that filter material and I blocked the current so now it won't push him.

I try to give my betta a better life. He lives in a snug 1 gallon tank, with a way-to-strong filter and an excessive current. He seems to be content, but I've been trying to convince my parents to get at least a 2.5 gallon tank. This is their reply every time:
"Fish are like children. You're basically trying to spoil him."

can i turn off my filter in a 5 gallon tank at night and turn it on during day time?
Al B
Al B - 7 years ago
You wouldn't ever want to turn off your filter for extended periods of time, although you may be able to get away with it depending on the duration.

From what I can tell it's perfectly fine to turn off the filter for about 3mins during water changes, though you'll want to turn off a submerge-only heater as well if the water levels don't allow for it.

I did have my filter turned off by accident for at least 45mins (in a 3.5L tank) without destroying the filter cycle... but I wouldn't make a habit of it. Just got lucky.

kyle wuvswubs - 7 years ago
ask yourself three questions first
1)do i have experience with betta fish to a reasonable lvl
2)do you have enough room. id recommend more than 48L for guppies as while small do multiply like rabbits, fish like neon tetra that dont multiply rapidly are better and id recommend no more than 5 of them
3)how aggressive in your betta when feeding? is he slow to the food or fast and violent? if slow then you may need to hand fed him worms if u have other fish using tongs or whatever else is similar as if he is violent the he will kill the others for food but if not then the others may eat his food and starve him.

if you think you can handle all of the above and have the patience to do so then yes id say go ahead and try it out, make sure you have a pot or figure that the other fish can hide in the make sure u have plenty of plants.

Chelsea Chickadee
Chelsea Chickadee - 7 years ago
Every single day (and make sure you use a water conditioner). In a bowl, the tiny amount of water combined with there being zero filtration means that waste and toxins build up in the water very quickly.
Although bettas are extremely tolerant and hardy fish and can survive in awful water conditions for moderate periods of time, that's not an excuse to deliberately keep them in those conditions. They'll survive for a few months, at best, before dying due to their living conditions.
Any other questions, feel free to ask :)

how can you put all of your betta's together and not kill each other ?
Brianna Larsen
Brianna Larsen - 7 years ago
Patricia Alcacio You really can't put much male bettas together, if you want them to fight and kill eachother and with females you have to be very experienced and know what you have to do, with lots of dedication. I know creative pet keeping is sucessfully keeping Female bettas together but you can tell she js very experienced. If you want to try to keep females together do lots of research :) but with any bettas together there will be a chance they might fight.

I need help... I recently purchased a 10 gallon tank for my betta after doing research on how to properly keep them. I've ran into several problems, but the one which I have yet to be able to come up with a solution to. The filter that came with the tank is too strong and gave my fish problems. I looked into buying a different filter but I have not been able to find one I could buy, mainly due to the gentle filters I am looking for being only fit for smalerl tanks and the filters fit for my tank size being too strong for my betta. Should I consider buying a smaller (but still a good size) tank for my betta which could support a good filter, or would this not be a good solution? I have no desire to go filterless either, and would appreciate any help!

Flooper Squid
Flooper Squid - 7 years ago
yes, cold temperatures could weaken your betta's immune system and give it less color, but if your tank is under 5 gallons the tank could become too hot and injure or even kill your fish. I'd also recommend putting the heater in the tank for at least a day before putting the fish in to make sure it does not overheat your tank.

My  Betta is kept in a tank that is just under 2 Gallons. I live on campus at university and fish are allowed to be kept as pets (which is good because I already had mine before I left) but 2 gallons is the max allowed, and only one "plug in" so I prioritized for the heater and perform 25-30% water changes once a week and a 50+% once a month. He seems happy enough, eats well (mix of pellets and freeze dried blood worms) and is active, but I still worry about him.
Al B

No other fish can live in a 5 gallon tank beside betta's. If you want more fish, you'll need to get at least 10 or 15 gallon. But you can get some shrimp together with a betta in a 5g tank (big enough so the betta doesn't eat them, like amano shrimp, they're big and eat algea)

Al B
Al B - 7 years ago
If you still have your fish & it's swimming around just fine with your regular PWCs, then it's just a matter of whether you want the best for your pet or not.
If it's sick or spending most of it's time idle, then you really should get a filter to correct the situation and reduce the amount of required PWCs.

Water changes, while beneficial, still stress fish out to some degree (though not to nearly the same degree as poor water).

I personally would recommend getting both. It's much less stressful for fish to have a consistent temperature and good circulation (aka oxygen) in the tank. Your fish will be much less likely to get sick and will live longer. Bettas LOVE greenery! They naturally come from areas that are heavily planted. Anubias nana are super easy plants to take of and are perfect for bettas. If you want fake plants, make sure they are fabric, as the plastic ones will tear betta fins up.

Velocifish
Velocifish - 8 years ago
Sorry your fish died :( If it helps, I can think of a few reasons why it might have happened so you can prevent it for future fish.

1. Fish could have been sick when you bought it.
2. Maybe the tank wasn't cycled? (google "fishless cycling" if you don't know what I'm talking about).
3. Too many dried worms can actually make fish constipated, which can be fatal to fish. This is why the video mentions not to use dried foods. Using pellets and frozen foods is a good alternative.

Velocifish
Velocifish - 8 years ago
A bubble nest is something a betta makes by blowing tiny bubbles at the surface of the water. Males make them and they are the ones to take care of the eggs and baby fish. This is where he would put the babies (hence the "nest" part).

It's prefect. The minimum is 2.5. You're at least the double of the minimum. You can know from your fish if it's happy.
1- They are moving fluently.
2- Their colours are bright, not dull.
3- It has a bubble nest.
4- It eats it's food.

2.5 gallons is way too small for 90% of people who would buy bettas--this is the gateway fish to the aquarium hobby. They should have a 10gallon tank for beginners.
Tatsuhiro Satou
Tatsuhiro Satou - 8 years ago
not really 2.5 is actually great id say 1.5 is minimum but 2.5 is the best micro size but it really depends more on the fish i have a betta thats fine in a 1.5 cube with 2 ghost shrimp but part of it is he doesn't like big tanks i had him in a 5 and he hated it so i got him the cube and planted it and he loves it

You can, but you will likely face issues like fin rot, or velvet because unless you are good at keeping up with weekly 50% water changes. Even bettas kept in proper conditions are susceptible to these issues.

TrashyVerse
TrashyVerse - 8 years ago
I just got a betta fish today and they said at shop when I said i wanted to get a 10 gallon for him (just for him I still dont know if it was male or female since it had no lable) "They need a shallow body of water typically like a 1.5 gallon because where their from they haven't usually a deep amount of water - so they need shallow water or else it can cause swim bladder." And I just looked at him like he was insane.

But I had a hermit crab that I got and was holding at the same time (and I wanted a ten gallon as well) and I was really pissy and tired and had to go to the bathroom (lol) and Im like "look just give me a ten gallon for my hermit crab and I'll go somewhere else for my betta stuff." Luckily i still had my old ten gallon that I kept my mouse in, I cleaned that up used THAT for my crab and the new one for my betta. Now to get the thermometer, the filtration system, etc... Oh gods and the only other places in town are chain pet stores. -_- What a load of BS

(PS: The guy standing next to me said that he kept his betta in a VASE. A freaking VASE! I'm never going back there. I feel really bad I couldnt get any decorations or hidey hut for my Betta but maybe when we go to Walmart later we can get some cause essetially right n ow he/she is just freaking out. A pretty little thing - blue super delta beta is what they called it. Though not sure if its what thats what it really is. shrug)

(PPS: Regardless if i got a community tank or not which I dont know, I wanted ampel space for my betta to explore and hide with beautiful decorations and space to be able to just hill at. But yeah. What a load of bull. -_-)

Velocifish - 8 years ago
If your betta was called a "delta super ultra" then it is most likely a male. Only the males are bred to have fancy tails with names like those. In fact, females are very hard to find in stores because they are less pretty and harder to sell than the males. :)
idk anymore
idk anymore - 8 years ago
If you want to determine the gender of your betta look at its tail. Females usually have shorter tails while males have long flowy fins, mostly on their caudal fins and dorsal.
TrashyVerse
TrashyVerse - 8 years ago
I apologize. I didn't realize you left this comment here. I don't think mixing would be a good idea for this betta since well, I don't know the gender (they didn't say on the label) it was like a delta super ultra something or other. I just picked it because it was looking at me through the cup and I felt it had a relatively calm aura?

But he/she has calmed down a lot and doesn't display any signs of aggressiveness anymore (attacking the reflection, flaring, etc.) all of that has faded away and its not even been two weeks. Friday's responsive to my voice and I think it even seems happy (like almost a puppy it has a sort of twinkle in its eye) when I'm in the room. It watches me and I think that's kinda cool. Whatever the case may be it's a really healthy fish and I don't want to do anything drastic right now. Especially with everything going on and all my appointments >_<'

+Plutoid I got my first crabs from this store years ago when I was young, and woman said I could keep just one of them. I don't know, to me the one I picked looked stressed so I choose him. If I do get more crabs I'd worry it'd stress him out or I'd have to transition them into the tank since it is his now.

Edit: He's not dead yet. Which is a good sign! Lol. I trust this woman. Like I said, years ago when I was like four I got my crabs and kept them in a CRITTER KEEPER. So Jay is doing much better than that. (Fancy livin'!) She said that I can keep them in that, but I told her specifically I wanted a 10 Gallon for one tank so he could have all the space all to himself. And I hear him move around at night, he makes noise, so yes, he's fine and he seems happy and he's even responsive to my voice. I don't think anything's wrong with him being alone for now.

Ummm... I have never cared for Hermit Crabs before, although I know most of the ins and outs of care for them so i would like you to consider this; Hermit Crabs are animals that need to be in groups and each crab needs five gallons to thrive in. I just would like you to consider getting another crab for your 10 gallon, or you can upgrade to a bigger tank for your crabs. Anyways, happy critter keeping!

The fish is fine now since I went to Petco and got fake plants and decorations and she (I think it was a she, they didn't have a label on it stating otherwise so I'm just going with that) seems really happy. I'm named her Friday and my Hermit Crab Jarvis. Smart little thing, is plenty responsive to my voice and I' sang to her on the first two days so she'd calm down and she really did seem to notice. Same with Jarvis.

Friday (& Jarvis)'s really intelligent and I'm glad I got her. I'm just angry at that store for giving out false information and I feel sorry anyone else who goes in there expecting to find correct info.

Six months ago I bought four male betta fish and I use them in an experiment; They are all from the same breeder and have the same father and mother. I keep them in four tanks 10L, 20L, 30L and 60L, with live plants, hiding places and filter and heater. I do a 10%water change every two days (with conditioner). I keep the water at 27.2-27.5°C (around 80°F). I feed them Betta-flakes (JBL) and sundried mosquito larvae two times a day.
I observe them and they have their own ways, ... one loves to sleep in a cave, one sleeps against the heater, one sleeps in the vegetation and the other in open water .... I really want to know if the size of the tank has something to do with their ability to live longer. I have very old bettas and one is 11.5 years of age and still active.
They say bettas live around two years, so they say the same about Danios but I know of danios who reached 12 years ....

+kitten cupcakes What temperature is your room? If its 74 or less at all times then I would advise a getting a heater. As with filter or not.. it depends.. you can keep ammonia down by changing water everyday..but it might stress out your fish vs a once a week 20% water change with a tank that has a filter. It really depends on the setup that you have.

matthew trn
matthew trn - 8 years ago
I would argue that Betta fish can be kept, in a "thriving" environment, in tanks as small as a gallon. Yes, it will require more water changes, but a cycled one gallon tank with an established sponge filter should be more than enough to keep a Betta happy. Add a small heater (or heat tape under the tank) and you should have no trouble. Bettas, especially the incredibly flamboyant varieties in stores today, don't need a ten gallon tank for size. In fact, having too large of a tank without enough suitable cover can actually stress a Betta out. Larger tanks do offer a significant advantage in terms of water stability and lesser care in terms of water changes and regular cleanings. I wouldn't advise a small tank to a beginner, but an experienced fish keeper should have no trouble maintaining a small Betta tank.

These are not wild Bettas. Domesticated Bettas are very different from wild Bettas. Not to mention their are dozens of different species of wild Bettas. All of which have slightly different environments. Domesticated Bettas physically can not swim well. Wild Bettas are much better adapted to a larger environment. Moreover, if you are truly trying to replicate the wild habitat of a Betta you should be adding leaves to release tannins, thus lowering your pH and darkening your water to a rich caramel color. If you look at the large breeding farms in Asia, the same farms responsible for the most beautiful, highest quality Bettas in the world, you will see that all of the fish are  kept in unfiltered half-gallon tank that are caramel in color due to the leaching of the Indian almond leaves. Only in the states are people so naive as to believe that domestic Bettas need 10 gallon tanks. The Bettas you are buying at the store are breed selectively for small environments. They are born, raised, and breed in small environments. It is what they are genetically predisposed for after generation upon generation of selective breeding.

What is important is water stability and healthy water parameters. These are more difficult to maintain in small tanks, but not impossible, especially if the owner has any fish keeping experience.

My recommendation to anyone reading this, and anyone who really wants a Betta, get what you can afford. Do not be tricked into buying massive aquariums (though they will make your life easier in the long run). Buy a small tank, a heater, and a sponge filter. Cycle the tank and put a Betta in it. With regular maintenance your Betta will live a full and happy life, no big tank needed. Take it from someone who has been keeping numerous Bettas for a long time. Someone who has the experience and scientific background to back up his claims.Someone who isn't here to sell you an emotional sob story. Thanks for reading. Happy fish keeping.

+TheAbsoluteGangsta usually any type of small school of fish that can swim fast will be okay with a betta. There are exceptions though. My betta got along great with a school of fancy tailed guppies and tetras. Some bettas can't be housed with any other fish depending on their aggression levels. Also, unless you get your fish from a legit fish store, I would quarantine them for 2 to weeks so you don't introduce any type of illnesses into your main tank.

My betta happily eats his flakes with brine shrimp(it comes blended), and then the next day I feed him 3 small pieces of freeze dried bloodworms. I alternate every other day. Creative Pet Keeping
Creative Pet Keeping - 8 years ago
+Msp Lover XO Is there a bubble nest? That's where they male would guard the eggs if they mated. Its best that you keep them separated. In the wild the female would just swim away somewhere else but in this case she is trapped with him and he can kill her. Especially if he has a bubble nest to protect. So the tank divider was a very wise choice.

I currently have 3 bettas and they're all kinda in small tanks (has dividers) and that's all I can really afford at the moment, but by the end of summer I'm going to build a huge ass tank for them (including dividers) and hopefully it works out. I literally hate the tank I just bought them today because I have to turn the filter off because it's like one of those cascading waterfall thingys? So all the food goes to the last guy and gets sucked down into the filter. That really worries me because I have a baby female in the first tank and she really needs to eat more because she looked sick when I bought her. Does anyone know any good brands of food I could feed them? I currently have 3 different foods including blood worms. But yeah, I kinda need help.

Hi, I have a question. Is it possible to keep a male betta with around 3 female bettas in a heavily planted 15 gallon tank? I asked the guy at the aquarium shop and he said you could but there could be a bit of fighting if the male wants to breed. But I wanted to know your opinion on this as my other option was gonna be just to have a female betta sorority, thanks :)
Micah Smith
Micah Smith - 8 years ago
+Milly S Do not do this. This is a bad idea. I breed Bettas, and can tell you that this is going to wind up with at least one of your fish dead. Males and females should only be housed together during breeding attempts, and only until they have finished breeding.

A heavily planted, 15-gallon tank with a heater and heavy-duty sponge filter is a good way to keep a sorority. No less than 5 females, and no more than 9 for a tank that size. Odd numbers work better for some reason, and it's best to introduce the females all at once if you can, to reduce bullying.

Yes, you could get some guppies, they don't need a heater, though one couldn't hurt, also they are very hardy fish, so minimal filtration would be required I guess.. Look guppies up, very hardy and don't need a HUGE tank.. 2.5 gallons, 3, or 5 gallons is great.. ;) look em up, and get a few..

Great information! These little fish are amazing and deserve better than what they get. I had one in a 8 gallons planted, filtered, heated tank. He was beautiful and happy and lived close to 4 years.

+The Fur Monsters Thanks! I have one in a 10 gal community tank and another in a 20 gal community tank as well. I love being able to see them explore the tank. :)
