How To Make a DIY Sponge Filter for a Betta Fish Tank.

How to make an easy DIY sponge filter that's works well in your Betta fish tank. This is a good Betta fish filter because it is run on an air pump, so the water flow can easily be adjusted. You will need a jar, 1 inch tubing, bio media such as ceramic rings, or gravel will work, aquarium sponge, polyfil, airy tubing and an air stone. Couldn't you just cut tabs into the cut end and put that into the bottom of the filter ? Then you don't have to send the edge smooth... Or am I just lazy? ;)

I wouldn’t use this for a 20 gallon. I think either a hang on back filter or sponge filter is a better option. We use sponge filters in our 20 gallon long tank.

The bubbles create an upward flow inside the plastic tubing. This flow draws in the water through the top of the jar, through the filters, down towards the bottom of the plastic tubing and back up through the plastic tubing with the bubbles.

If I did all of this without the plastic tube in the middle, just put the airstone through a hole in the sponge and into the bottom area with the ceramic rings, would it still work just as well?

Yes, it would work but the water flow would not be a strong.

Hi Sheila! I love your diy filter and I'm planning making two for the divided 10 gallon tank I'll be setting up for bettas. I've watched your other videos on cleaning the tank and doing water changes. I know you said that filters only need cleaning once every 4-6 weeks, but I'm wondering how I clean this diy filter. Thank you for teaching me how to make a perfect home for my future fish! :D

Hi I was wondering I have a five gallon tank and right now I am going through cycling and I have one of these DYI filters but I am not sure how big I should have gotten the glass jar because my ammonia is very high and my betta got sick I was not over feeding and I did water change maybe I did to big of a water change so for a 5 gallen how big should the jar be.

You can get a lever to add to the airline tubing, using this you can adjust the flow as much as you want. If you're not sure what it is we sell them on our website.

Camille L

how does this work? like how does it filter things
KazzyAngel
KazzyAngel - 7 years ago
So when the air stone pushes water upwards , it creates a suction underneath it which draws water into the tube (all that air forcing upwards takes water with it). Because the only place for it to draw water from is the surrounding filter media and the water outside of the jar, it sucks water into the jar, through the media, and then back up and out of the tube. You know it is working if you see air bubbles forming in the bottom layer.

If you want to do an experiment to see this in action, you can take the tube with the air stone inside, put them in the aquarium, and hover over a bit of poly fluff. The force of the rising water creates the suction and the poly fill will get sucked up. Its really cool. I spent a really long time figuring this out myself because I wanted to make sure the filter actually worked before I tried it on my betta tank lol.
Alexandra Hoepfner
Alexandra Hoepfner - 7 years ago
Camille L have you ever found the answer to this? I don't get the physics behind it lol where does the suction come from?

what is the purpose of the teeth and the clear tubing? is it needed to properly work. I have a similar diy filter in my betta tank minus that tube...I just worry its not really cleaning the tank like a store bought filter like the topfin power 10 filter...Id much rather use this diy model bc the flow is so minimal for my sweet bettas. Please help thank you
OkamiLeilah
OkamiLeilah - 7 years ago
then thats perfect! i do my regular changes and do vacuum the bottom of the tank during every change. That makes me feel so much better and i will be adding that tube on my next water change. Thank you so much!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Yes it will but like all filters it won't get all the waste and food. That is why when doing a water change you should gravel vacuum the bottom of the tank. They are very affective filters for betta tanks especially as there is usually only one fish in the tank.
OkamiLeilah

Sorry that was really weirdly ordered but ...
1. Thanks for the video on the filter I think it's going to help keep the left side of my tank a lot cleaner!
2. Should I worry about one of my bettas jumping to the other side of the tank? There is a gap between the divider and the lid.
3. Will my bettas still be living life to the fullest in this divided set up? I mean, I purposely did some research to find a suitable divider for feisty bettas and it led me to your divider but I wanted the one with holes just to have a little more circulation to the big filter. They obviously know that they're not alone in the tank because I have already caught them flaring and trying to stick their eyes in the wholes to look at one another. They are pretty young bettas I got from a local petstore and according to them, all their bettas come from segrest farms. So these guys are young and out for blood I guess
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I would lower the water level if you don't have a tight fitting lid. Bettas love to jump and they're good at it. It can take bettas a while to settle in a divided set up. Flaring is not bad as long as it's not excessive. It's actually healthy and stimulating for them. I'd try putting plants up against the divider to block their view a little more and give them time to settle. Usually within a few days they will calm down.

have you ever put a mirror in your betta tank? because i use a big enough mirror shard as the base for my sponge filter and then when i closed the lid on tank, she was no where to be found, thought that she sucked on the sponge so i checked and there she was in attack mode and fighting her reflection, ha. but i changed to tile from different tank which the corys didn't mind because it wasn't funny anymore, it's feeding time and she wasn't eating. ha. cool setup by the way

I have a question... if I made this in s much larger scale and put it in a 20 gallon will plenty of beneficial bacteria work? also... if it's for a single telescope eye goldfish would this sustain his tank considering the waste that may not be collected is removed? I apologize if this is confusing I'm just curious if this may work for my future tank

I really don't think this would be sufficient for goldfish. They produce way too much waste. It may work but I think it's a risk.

Will G In my opinion, the overall price will be 0$. There is no way that you are a fishkeeper and you dont have all thise stuff. If youare new, I will say... 7$ for the air pump, and stone, 1$ for the tubing, Regular gravel will be enough so thats 0$, Poly fil will be like 2$ And the jar you are using can be taken out of any souce's jar. Overall price - 10$

Hey weird question but does the tube in the middle have to be taller than the walls of the jar for this system to work? or does it just make it work better? I made a littler version of this but my tube does not extended above the jar (the sponge is still below the tube though) i couldn't find tubing taller than the jar i had
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
No, it will still work but the flow of water won't be as strong when filtering the water.

My betta doesn't seem to like the filter I got him, so I had to turn it off. Will this filter be good for a 2.5 gallon tank?

We get ours from Amazon. In the Amazon search box type in mini sponge filters and they should come up.

Yes, I use this in my 2.5 gallon tanks. You can also use mini sponge filters, i use those too. Both run off an air pump.

Hi. I made this filter using baby food jars, and I tried to get the label glue off as well as I could but there was still some left, does this e as a danger to my fish? If you could pleas respond as soon as you can I'm worried. Thank you
Joshua Hodge
Joshua Hodge - 7 years ago
If the glue is still persistent after soaking in hot water, soak it in warm water with baking soda added. I have removed many labels from wine and liquor bottles for other projects; baking soda water always breaks it free with just a little scrub. Just rinse the jar well before constructing your filter.

So I'm curious about how this works, and what needs to be maintained. Also, can the gravel at the bottom be aquarium gravel, or is it a special gravel? Thinking of setting up filters for my bettas. I want my five to be as happy as yours. Also trying to think up ways to make this pretty as well as functional. I have a few ideas.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Maintanace is really easy for this filter, just wash the gravel and soongenin aquarium water and replace the polyfil when needed. You can use aquarium gravel in the bottom.

Hello!
I was wondering how big I would have to make one of these for my 35g tank. I bought a Betta and got a hand me down tank from my parents. The filter that came with the tank is making too strong of a current and is pushing my Betta around.  I would love to make one or two of these so I can remove the filter so he doesn't have a hard time swimming around.

Thank you so much, I enjoy watching all of your videos! <3

Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Thanks. I'm not really sure, possibly 3 times this size. I think for that big of a tank it would be much cheaper and just as effective to buy a sponge filter.

You can't use cotton wool. If you choose to use a kitchen sponge you must be sure it's not had any chemicals added, which they often have.

Sam X.S. Cai
Sam X.S. Cai - 7 years ago
You probably solved the problem, but just saying.

Bring the top of the tube slightly over the water surface (like 2mm or so) and watch if water are lifted out of the tube. If it does then it means water is circulated and it works.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
As long as bubbles are coming up out of the jar then it's working. The cycle takes a good few weeks and over time you will see the media in the jar start to get dirty.

People like to scoff at these style filters, mainly just as in gaming people tend to think more expensive is better. These filters will work flawlessly every time, very low maint. costs and provide the needed Big 3 of filtration.

I would use two, one in each corner. The thing with sponge filters or DIY filters is you must make sure you vacuum the gravel thouroughly when doing a water change. Sponge and DIY filters are perfect for bettas because they give very little water movement but that also means the filters can't trap all the waste in the tank.
Lexi O

Great video :) I am currently setting up a 2.8 gallon tank for my betta and I was thinking of using this filter. Since I'm having this in my bedroom, I was wondering if this is silent or close to silent? I never used an airstone in my tanks before
Lifewithpets

In theory yes, it would house a lot of beneficial bacteria but I don't think it would be effective with trapping their waste as they produce so much of it. For a secondary source of filtration it would be great.

It works very well, it will store the good bacteria to keep the tank healthy as long as good tank maintenance is done. The thing with sponge filters and DIY filters is they don't create much water flow, so when you do a water change you must be thorough when vacuuming the gravel to remove any waste.

Does this filter work for big aquariums like 15 gallons though I don't understand about the biological filtration bit? What kind of rocks did you put in? How does this work? Overall, this video is great.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
The filter will work in any size tank but you'd need to make it much bigger. Also for larger tanks with more fish I would stick with a HOB filter that can support using biological media. The rocks I used are called filter bio plus. They're very porous so the beneficial bacteria can easily grow on/in them. If you just have sponges in a filter it's called mechanical filtration. This is when the sponges trap the dirt. This is the filters primary purpose. Beneficial bacteria does grow in the filter and on the sponges but not as well as when you have the rock/ceramic rings or other types of biological media. The biological media grows beneficial bacteria rapidly and can sustain larger amounts on/in the surface of the rings or rocks. This makes for a healthier tank because it keeps the tank cycled and balanced.
