How To Slow Your Filters Current Or Your Bettas

So this is what I do to spread out the pressure for letting water out of the filter so it's not going in one spot creating a waterfall. This will help is your betta keeps being tossed around his/her tank due to a strong filter current.

I am so glad I found this. Got a female veiltail and she didn't like the current (it was touching the bottom of the tank) so this REALLY came in handy. Simple and not at all expensive. Thanks for making this vid.

I cant do this, i tried it, but unfortunately my filter is a wheel filter. When i try to get the bottle to nest in the filter, my wheel will stop :(

Thank you very much I got a new filter that hangs on the back of the tank (giving my Betta more room to swim). And I was afraid I would have to take it back. This trick seems to be working well. Still some current but it doesn't seem to affect my little swimmer. I'm glad you posted this.

Those plastic bottles are made of cheap plastics and will leech chemicals into your tank. Use something else!!!!

My Tetras seem to be pushed up, down, left and right by an invisible current sometimes. Is that the filter or are they just sleeping? Anything I can buy to sort it out? I don't trust myself with this task...
TheBedrockBuster
TheBedrockBuster - 7 years ago
ShintyShinto same thing happens in my tank. I think that there are just some weak currents randomly caused by the filter's alignment with the plants and whatnot. In my tank they seem to pop up anywhere

Just did it on my fish tank. worked like charm. I cut the cap and put it in the middle to lift the bottom of the plastic, so the water would go to the back insted of out of the sides. Thanks for the idea. The word that you're looking for is a baffle.

yeah, it is, we drink water out of it so legally it has to not leech chemicals into the water for a very long time

I noticed there was some sharpie on the plastic, this is probably harmful to the fish water.  And, the plastic is sharp, could use something safer I would think:)

dadoody
dadoody - 8 years ago
+Sonya Vaynshteyn - What I did was use a STRONGER water bottle from a Smart Water bottle of water. Denser/thicker plastic so it doesn't wobble around. I did not use the center like this video, I used the bottom, and I left the bottom intact so that the water only flows 1 way, into a corner, instead of both sides. This keeps 75% of the tank low current instead of 50% like this video.

Great idea but I think when the fish passes by it won't it tear his fin? I have the same filter I think, Whisper. It came with my tank kit I got from Walmart. I had to take this filter out because it kept sucking up my beta. Well not into it. But twice I found him stuck to it where it sucks the water in. What do you do about that?
Randahl Capurro
Randahl Capurro - 8 years ago
+NEB Barnes You can buy a sponge pre-filter for a few bucks that you stick over the water intake tube, it helps to diffuse the suction so that fins or small critters don't get stuck.

Thanks for this video! I was researching how to fix the current because my betta is having a hard time swimming. The forums suggested this but there were no pics or instructions and I wasn't sure what it was supposed to look like.

Thank you so much! My filter's current was so strong it was pushing my poor Luke around and he wouldn't swim or eat (because he'd have to chase his food). This helps so much! <3

Thank for the idea, I have the Whisper In Tank filter for the 1 to 3 gallon tank and I used your idea which worked great, I just couldn't get it to say because of my lid to my tank. So what I did, is I cut the bottom and top of the water bottle off and cut abt. an 1 inch wide slit up the side of the bottle (I didn't cut the slit all the way to the top) I did that so it wouldn't slip down and it wraps around the filter and air tube. Wala!! There is barely any water movement in the water and my Rally is happy as can be :-)

+Michelle Boccanfuso I have the whisper one too but for the 10 gallon. I wound up taking it out because the suction part was too strong. Twice I found my beta stuck to it. I had to use the fish net to push him off. But I really want a filter system. Do you have issues with yours?

OMG thank you so much, my filter is a little too powerful for that thin plastic, so I used some from an empty gallon of water jug which is thicker and it didn't fall because the filter lid kept it in place, I subbed and my betta can now have clean water and low water flow :)

Could the left over sharpie on the bottle be toxic to fish :O??? Great idea tho I'm trying it
fastfiddler1625

WORKS! BUT WITH AN AMENDMENT I MADE. I have the Tetra PF10. Still too powerful for my Betta in a 10 gal tank. Aquafina bottle cut as she showed. I then cut about 1 1/2 inch from the circumference to make it smaller. It still creates pretty strong currents out the side. I cut two small openings just at and above the water line on the front (~1/4" wide x 3/4" tall). Now there are essentially four paths for water to escape, greatly reducing any single current created. Thank you for this idea!
