How Walmart takes care of their Betta Fish.

I got a Betta Fish a few days ago and decided he needed a few decorations in the tank. When Mom and I got to the fish department at Walmart, This is what we found on the shelves. This is why not to buy any pet from Walmart. I hope this helps. Please comment, rate and subscribe.

It's really sad and fyi most of fish market in indonesia also mistreated their betta, I visited fish market that sell betta today there's hundreds of betta that look really unhealthy their fin are hurt and some of them even died and the tank is less than quarter gallon it more like cups than a tank and perhaps they feed the fish just every week, maybe it's happened cuz the betta only cost around 30 cent here in Indonesia so that they're really don't care about betta, also most of indonesian who have betta fish as their pet also mistreated them they only have a really small cups**
( srry for my bad english I also have 5 betta they're really healthy and gorgeous )

This is absolutely appalling. Wal Mart treats their fishes the same way they do with their sweatshop employees.

The horrible chain of stores was started by a member of the "Church Of Christ" cult, aka the Campbellites. So it was off to a bad start.

In case you didn't already know, that cult teaches that a person has to be baptized in water in order to be saved. The Bible, however, says "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." (Acts 16:31) I guess they missed that.

So, once my mom bought a betta at PetCo a few years ago, and I decided to name him Lucas. He lived a long, healthy life for around a year, a normal life span for bettas. He never got ich (a common fish disease) before, like I said, he lived an amazing life. I have bought a fish from Walmart before and tried to save it, but it died not even a week later. Walmart doesn't even feed their fish, they don't even clean tanks, and they don't clean out the other dead, rotting fish. It's abuse. Also, I saw a little girl getting fish at Walmart, and the employee just left the fish there on the counter suffering to death. The little girl started crying, and I almost cried, too. Apparently, the assholes at Walmart obviously don't give a shit about their fish, to them it just means, "Oh, as long as I just piss around on my job and not even bother to do anything because I OBVIOUSLY am going to get paid anyway." It doesn't matter if you're going to get paid or not, I just wish you would make someone's day. If I were that little girl, I would've never gone to Walmart ever again. I honestly hate how Walmart employees treat others, It's truly disturbing. So if you want to get fish, DON'T go to Walmart. Go to PetCo. Just some advice.

The best place to buy ANY type of legal animal is reptile expo or animal expo. The way most stores treat their fish is VERY unexpected and VERY VERY unacceptable. My current Betta is from Walmart it is a alpha male, and he has lived for about three weeks, longer than Walmart fish are expected to live, when I got him he had serious stress levels, and fun rot. I could obviously tell they weren't feeding their fish either. I really do like the fact you made this video, you earned a subscriber. Keep up the good work!

What is wrong with stores that own animals. They don't even care if the animals die or are not in a healthy environment. They just care about the money not the animals. If people keep doing this to animals, then they could probably go extinct. There are so much animal species that are going extinct. And some people don't even give a shit. That's fucked up man.

That was absolutely astonishing. I'm lucky I live in England. Wal-Mart needs to know that fish haves lives too. You expect people to buy things when they've seen how you treat them? Disgusted!

Wal-Mart shouldn't even have a section for live animals. All they do is leave them to rot. Just in hopes some person will buy them. I'd Buy as much as I could and take better care than they ever would.

I bought a betta from Walmart because I couldn't stand its suffering. I know I should've stole it because they don't deserve money for this but nonetheless he's mine now. He's a crowntail betta and he's a beautiful purple, and I named him Arin. He looked quite sickly when I got him but now he's perked up so much and I can't believe it. He's lived with me 8 months now and I love him so.

we were walking by the fish at our walmart tonight, no intentions on getting a fish, they were just on the way to the paper towels. they had about 10 fish there in the little cups and 2 were dead. We wanted to save them and we ended up buying one just to give him a shot at a better, longer life... he seems pretty happy, we've only had him for about 5 hours... Walmart needs to do better on the car of living creatures if they're going to sale them.

Proud of you kid!!! I am glad you spoke up and pointed out the disgusting irresponsible unacceptable way Walmart is! I don't care one bit you cursed, and no one else should be concerned with it either. You have adults in your life to guide you (you mom, your grandma). No one here has the right to condemn you for saying "shit" especially since your heart was in the right place. There is way worse on you tube, TV, music. You are\were obviously disgusted and upset over this and expressed what was fact! And for as young as you are to know Walmart is killing, abusing, these fish and trying to profit from it, then to be active enough to post a video showing the proof is something to be proud of. It's wonderful you took innicitive to stand up and say something. I also am proud of you because you apologized for your language and you certainly didn't have to except to maybe your parents. That's shows you are a respectful young man.

You can't blame Walmart. What if there is a shortage in employees? What if there are no qualified professionals to look after them? It's not walmarts fault. Some employees walk past with regret because they wanted to take care of these animals but they can't because they don't know how. So basically you can't just blame Walmart

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE We need to retaliate against this horrible treatment of innocent fish. It doesn't matter if they are an animal, no living creature should have to go through this torture. I bet half of them are suffocating in their own feces during this video. We must liberate all fish from cruel residences. They don't have to be Bettas. I own Bettas and I am deeply offended by this awful treatment. We all need to work together to give these tortured fish a good home, where people don't walk buy knowing that there is a fish rotting and completely ignore it. Everyone, try your hardest to get as many tanks as possible and free these tormented fish. WHO'S WITH ME?!

My friend was the department manager for Pets in Walmart. She took care of the fish there so well that there was never any sick or dead fish. Even the Bettas. She cleaned their little containers(Which I highly dislike) every three days. They decided to move her to a different department and the fish just started to get neglected. It was horrible. When she tried to get that department back or even talk to the store manager they said 'They look fine to me'. Yeah... they look fine when half of them can't swim right, are sick and are eating the dead ones. It makes me sick. I even saw a worker feed a dead fish to the Oscar! Sure they eat other fish but don't feed sick fish to another fish.

If Walmart is going to sell something living then they should properly take care of them. Just because they're fish and not a dog doesn't make it right to not feed it a day or not clean its water. Just because it's a fish doesn't mean that it can live on its own in a small container and can't feel anything.

Instead of telling people to NOT buy their fish at Walmart they should!

Although they're taint and unhealthy you can take in the fish and possibly save their life!!

I understand why someone would want a healthy vibrant fish but that's like going to an orphanage

And picking the cute bratty one over the polite and sweet yet ugly kid!

Take these fish out of their terrible prison and give them a happy home!

They'll be happy and If they die then get another at least it died in a clean aquarium rather than drowning in its own shit!

I know it seems harsh to easily replace the fish but, to be honest. they're cheap and you could save a life!

No-one cares though since they're so small!

It's really depressing

Just remember that fish has thoughts and feelings

Those fish are probably suicidal and hate being in their little plastic prison!

Save them from their torture and give them a peaceful life or a meaningful death that isn't caused by their own shit!

It is your choice but I would save those fish from their terrible homes and let the ones that are actually being taken care of
stay where they are... after all... They aren't going anywhere but those fish have precious time that's running out!

So make the right choice and save them from their personal hell if you were them you'd wish for that too, right?

I got my betta from petsmart and he was a bit sick at first, but after some love and attention he has become my little buddy. He swims to greet me whenever I enter the room and he watches me when I'm sitting on my bed near his tank(his tank is right next to my bed) No betta deserves to be kept the way Walmart is keeping them.

If you're going to get a pet from a place like that, you're better off stealing it than paying for it. Giving them money just means more animals are put in deplorable conditions. I've talked a Petco into letting me walk off with a clearly dying betta before. They didn't get my money and the fish got some help, he lived six months longer in a nice 2.5 gallon tank but never fully recovered from the ordeal.

Excuse me, I got my first betta, Chato from Walmart and he lived for 3 years! 1 year more than the approximate life span. After he passed I got 2 more from Walmart named Luke and Duke. They've been here for like 1 1/2. They were both skinny and tiny but they got bigger and Luke is chubby but still playful.

I rescued my newest betta, Fawkes, from Walmart. Somebody was cruel enough to put him in one of those cups with another betta and his fins were so badly ripped that i didn't realize that he was a crowntail until he had healed some. He now has his own little bachelor pad. Walmart really shouldn't sell fish unless they want to have at least a couple of employees that are assigned and trained to take care of the fish.

Funny story. I was looking for a Betta fish. I knew that the males were the striking ones and such, so I was thinking I'd get one of them. But then I saw this one Betta. She didn't look special. Ordinary blue Betta female. Healthy, but not really striking, even a little dull. Her cup was filthy and high up so not many people would see her. But... she seemed to be staring at me. And wherever I went, she swam to meet me. The others ignored me for the most part. But then I realized she must've been here for a long time, since everyone wanted the pretty ones. So I chose her. Now she lives at my desk, in a beautiful and natural bowl, actually very close to my computer as I'm typing this. And she is truly a 1 of a kind fish. She is active and happy, and whenever I come into this room, she always swims over to greet me. She loves to hang around my side of the bowl when I'm in here doing homework. And once she got out of that hellhole of a container, in my bowl, she shines like the brightest star in the sky. She is a beautiful glittering blue that I would have never expected. So I named her Lapis Lazuli (But I just call her Lazuli) after the blue gemstone. And I never once have regretted getting her. I've grown to love her more than I could've ever thought I could love a singular fish.
And that's what stores like this understand. Fish aren't just another room decoration, like a lamp or poster. Although they can't run and play like dogs or cats, they're still companions and animals that need to be treated right.
I love you to the moon and stars, Lazuli.

Bettas don't live in mud puddles... The live in shallow slow moving streams, and mud is also different from dirty water. one betta can occupy a large expanse of territory and can travel many miles per day. the only time they live in small puddles is during the dry season when the water has evaporated. Bettas have also been known to jump from one puddle to the next in order to find better water conditions.

Why they have so many? I know they can't take care of them all. An employee will have to take hours of their day to just take care of the fish. Walmart isn't going to have an employee do that. People are not going to buy half dead fish except for the people who feel sorry for the fish. If you can't take care of them then don't sell them.

They put Bettas in little cups. I know bettas require little space, but a cup is too small. They do not put dividers between the fish. When males see each other they are in competition mode. They will become stressed if they do this for too long. Also I doubt walmart has an employee that will feed every single fish several times a day.

I feel sorry for the fish. And it's pronounced BEH-TA, not BAY-TA. Walmart needs to pull the plug on their tactics of selling live fish. My local Walmarts don't have that unnecessary department. Selling live fish is no different than selling a live dog or cat, and also no different than selling a human being for slavery.

Mina Fox

Yes, even though I still believe it's cruel for stores to be selling live fish. A lot of the stores are neglecting those animals and then who would want to pay for one that is dead? If they can't maintain those aquariums and give them the food they need to survive, there is no reason to have a department like that. I've seen some information in those stores claiming about how much food they need to survive is blatantly false and not enough for them to survive and animal welfarists have proof about it. And many stores are giving in to their employees not cleaning the tanks and feeding the fish.

EVERYBODY!

THIS IS OUR CHANCE!
WE CAN SAVE WALMARTS FISH!

WE have TO DO IT NOW!
Send me the address of all the WALMART's in your area with FISH DISPLAY TANKS!
PHOTOS of the Entire Display Unit, and tanks,
AND/OR
A short description of the condition, would be great!

After months and months of fruitless emails, I'm very lucky to have finally found a sympathetic person at MARINELAND, the company that furnishes and maintains Walmart's display tanks. She just happens to be the admin to a top CEO. I'm getting ready for our first phone meeting with Upper Management this week!
PLEASE! I need as many stores as I can get! I think we may be on our way to making a break through!
So DONT FORGET!
Be sure to Message me or email: pufferrescue@gmail.com
I'll miss it if you leave it as a comment.
WE NEED TO DO THIS NOW WHILE WE CAN!

Please pass this on to your everyone you know who cares about the fish.
Thank you!

+crazy things A lot of times its because customers sneak food because they think oh these poor fish and they over feed them.. A Bettas stomach is the size of its eye.. and they eat maybe one of those pellets every other day.. And like I said above they need to have air at the top of the container or they will die.. They get air from the surface...

I watched a video on betta fish, and then I looked for a video SPECIFICALLY showing the living conditions of bettas in Wal-Mart, because I remembered that I had seen those fish before somewhere.

It's been some 5+ years since I last saw these fish in little cups like those because I don't live in the states anymore, but I just remember being a young kid to teenager thinking, 'that just can't be right'. AND IT FUCKING ISN'T. There is no animal whose natural habitat is similar to a 4 inch small container.

So so so wrong. Good for you for posting this!

I have called the Arizona Humane Society dozens of times regarding the lack of care for their betta fish. I have had bettas for years and can't believe Walmart gets away with it. I have talked with store managers, and regional managers and have been told "we'll take care of it". The store employees tell a different story. They do not have enough hours in the day to care for the fish. So, they let them die. Why won't somebody do something!

Easy fix to this - don't buy them. then, Walmart or ANY place that sells fish will stop when there is no profit. But see then, its like drugs - stupid right? So why even do it? But they DO, so your not going to win this one either trust me. People who buy these are either too stupid and don't care OR ADD to the problem by trying to save the fish

This is precisely why bettas bought from Walmart and other places that neglect their bettas are known as "Rescue Bettas". You don't have to keep your betta in a 36 gallon tank, but change its water and show it that your actually care. Thankfully my Walmart stopped selling fish around 7 to 9 years ago. They used to, and when they did, they were often sickly like this.

I think WM will never stop selling betas... I saw a blue male betta fish at Wal-Mart that was losing his color in the water, it looked like he was going to die the other day... I bought a fish tank at Petco and got that fish.... I know I "shouldn't buy fish at Wal-Mart" but I couldn't see that poor fish die so young. Yet when I bought the fish along w/ a toy for my dog. The cashier was stupid! She put the fish in the bag w/ the toy and expected that the fish was sealed! Luckily she took the fish out... before I could get the fish. AND I asked someone why the water was so clear to a person that worked there and here is what they said "well... u know, all that shit that they make. (I ask if they know how to take care of betta fish) not a clue... don't you just put them in water and feed them? That's what I say cause that's all they need."

I'm an artist, and my number one craft store CraftWarehouse even sells these fish in the horrific condition you see them in here. What's worse, Petco sells hamsters and birds in terrible condition and horrible habitats and supplies. PLEASE- Everyone join me in my plan to help these idiot stores. I plan on writing everything wrong with their animal care and supplies, and how they can change that for the better of the animal. I will make photocopies of my page and tape them onto the cages at these stores. Hopefully some will take my advice and help these poor animals.

That's so sad. I have only one betta fish for the past two years and he loves swimming in circles in his tank. I can't image what its like for these poor Bettas.  What Walmart needs to do is to have a huge, open tank that is sectioned off into multiple parts so it would be easier to feed them.. Betta's rise to the surface to get fresh oxygen and these poor things can't even do that. They are starving, suffocating, swimming in a toxic concentration of ammonia and forced to the bottom of the container because there isn't enough water for them to swim around in. :(

They should keep them with the other fish, bettas can be community fish, just don't put bettas with bettas, even if they did fight, they'd be better off then rotting in cups with a few ounces of water. This applies to petsmart too. Their is no reason for bettas to sit in little cups individually, waiting to be sold.

And the other s and they leave the dead fishes in the fish aquarium s in Walmart in Taylor.

I always want to get a beta from Walmart, cause they look so sad, but... if I buy them, isn't it just supply in demand, they'll just order more? So I feel stuck :\

I got my betta I have had since December 22,2014 from walmart. I have to say my walmart where I'm from takes pretty good care of their fish. My old fish lived to be 3years almost 4 from the same walmart. Everytime I go to mine I never see a dead fish nor blue water

Oh honey. This is how PetSmart and PetCo are too. They just do a better job of hiding it. You got lucky with only seeing this. If you ever work at PetCo or PetSmart and you go into the back rooms you'll find rotting animals, animals being denied proper veterinary treatment, and worst of all, they do whacking. When an animal is sick or dying they whack it against a wall or step on it. Sometimes they'll just throw them out in the trash to starve to death. These stores are run by evil people. I've seen the horrors of so many stores that it's sickening. I remember when I was 6 I was at PetLand and I found a dead hamster in one of their open, overcrowded bins. Then I found three dead parakeets. Then I saw a puppy with a respiratory infection, A.K.A. kennel cough. It's traumatizing but you get used to it. You can't save them all, but the few that you can, it means the world to them.
