The care of a baby Betta is a little different. They need a lot more water changes to help them grow and also different food preferably live foods like microworms.

Hello! I'm hoping to start my first betta sorority tank, and while doing my research I read a lot that getting females from the same spawn can sometimes help ease aggression, so I was thinking of doing that. Do you know of any places online that would be able to sell me some girls from the same spawn? (that won't break the bank) I'm having troubles finding sites that list that kind of stuff (or list any info on the fish at all). I checked out Creative Pet Keeping (beautiful fish! ) but it seemed like she was mostly out of stock.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for all these beginner oriented videos. I bought a betta a week ago and have never kept fish before so it's all new to me. I had a one gallon tank to begin with but after adding decorations I realized he clearly needed a bigger tank. Doing the research I ended up buying a 5 gallon then the term cycling started to pop up all over the place and I had no idea what that meant. When I brought Ripley home I just filled the 1 gallon with water and let him acclimate in the bag before adding him. Now I'm shocked he didn't go in to shock. Now I'm better informed and knew I needed to cycle my new tank but no idea how. Your video was very helpful!

Sometimes when i am starting a brand new betta tank that isn't cycled, I will add the store water to jump start the cycle, but that only happens when I don't do a fishless cycle, which isn't very often.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Adding in store water will not jump start the cycle. There is very little bacteria in the water column so the amount in the bag will have little to no affect in the tank. If there are no other fish in the tank I guess it doesn't matter to much but you might be adding unwanted parasites etc.

Thank you so much for helping me with these videos. You do an amazing job with them. I noticed you have a lot of experience with betta fish. Im buying a 10 gallon tank soon and i want a betta as well. But do you know if they do well with red cherry shrimp? Bc im concidering buying some shrimp first and add a betta later when most of the shrimp are mature full grown shrimp. Do you think it can work? Because i heard they sometimes eat shrimp. These series has helped me a lot so far. Thanks so much!

Thank you. In my experience Betta fish will eat the red cherry shrimp. If the tank was very heavily planted you may get away with it. A lot depends too on the aggression level of your betta.

My betta fish attacks our thermometer that suctions to the inside of the tank. Idk why. But as soon as I put it in the tank, he flares and darts over to attack it. I don't keep it in there, but should I leave it in and let him get used to it? Or should I just keep it out like I've been doing? Also, I plan on doing a split tank with a divider bc of your one video! Can't wait to pick out a nice new betta for the other side! :) I realllly love the koi bettas!

Had a big question and can use some advice, and I don't know how else to contact you. I also don't have the best internet connection right now as I'm relying entirely on my cellphone. I really trust your judgement though and decided to ask here. I did find a video where you suggested a marina heater, and one other type, but was wondering if you have any additional advice. I currently have a ten gallon divided tank with a heater, divided into 3 compartments. I have a 2 1/2 divided with a heater. And two smaller unheated tanks where I'm temporarily holding two fish til I get them in the bigger tank. I had five bettas altogether. I keep the apartment at about 68-72 degrees because I live in an area of california that reaches triple digits in the summer (I have only lived here one month and the apartment will probably be kept warmer as the weather cools down). Last week we went out of town for the week. I did water changes and left thorough instructions for my brother who came every other day to feed and check on the fish. I bought timers for the lights. However we left the air conditioning off to save money. I figured the bettas don't mind a little heat, and I trusted the heaters to regulate the temperature and shut off when it got warm. Apparently I was wrong. My brother called me half way through the week and told me two of my fish (the two in the 2 1/2 divided) had died. He pulled the fish and buried them. And left everything as it was so I could see what happened. I came home at night. My apartment was 97 degrees, and the tank in question was 100 degrees. It was no wonder why my fish had died. While it was warm, the fish in the 10 gallon was ok, and it wasn't as hot. Now one of my fish in the smaller temporary tanks is fine. But the other one is stressed from the temperature fluctuations I think. He has a scale that is white and bumpy, and a little white on the tip of one of his fins. I started treating his tank for ich. I unplugged both heaters for fear of a malfunction and I'm at a loss as to what to do. I work at a petshop chain and I got aqueon heaters. I had a coworker who told me the heaters are notorious for overheating. Another coworker told me to just not use heaters. I feel like the warmth makes them happy and a maintained temperature reduces stress and illness. I'm a bit worried about this happening again though. Should I keep the heaters? Get new ones? And just take precaution next time I leave? Find a different way to heat them up? Just looking for some advice. Any would be appreciated.
Elfie In Angel City
Elfie In Angel City - 7 years ago
Lifewithpets Thank you for the response. I'm gonna turn the heater back on in the empty tank and monitor it for a few days and maybe do a little more research on heaters. I might invest in a new one. I will probably take your advice on the air conditioning next time I leave. Feel so bad my fish had to go that way. I don't want it to happen again. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
If your apartment is kept at 68-72f then you need a heater in the tanks. It was the heat in your apartment that caused the problem. By turning the air con off the tanks would have heated to the temperature of your apartment. Bettas can withstand temperatures of up to 88f with no problems. After that it gets too much for them. Maybe next time when you go away leave your air con switched on but turn the temperature up to 82-84f. That way you're still saving money but your bettas should be ok.

Females can sometimes live together in groups of 5 or more if given enough space and a heavily planted tank. Betta fish can sometimes live with other fish depending on their aggression level.
ajaemily
ajaemily - 7 years ago
Betta fish can live with other species of fish, depending on the temperament of both the betta and the other fish. Female bettas can live together in large tanks in groups of minimum 5, but it is not recommended unless you have experience with bettas and have a tank large enough (I prefer a minimum 20 gallon). However, male bettas should not be in a tank with other bettas.

I definitely agree about picking out a healthy betta for your first! I've had many sickly bettas from poor conditions in pet stores bounce back from just clean water alone, but it's not ideal for someone starting out! I was wondering if you've ever experienced this I've had a beta fish for almost two years, his 3.5 gallon tank broke. so I had to put him in the 10 gallon I had. he's not swimming around or do anything that he used to. it's been a while I've given him time to acclimate. I'm thinking it's just way too much room he's not used to it? Any suggestions I'm pretty sure I'm just going to divide the tank and give him the side he likes the best???? Please help

Big City Bettas - 7 years ago
TheGolemHunter I use aquarium salt at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water always, this can help prevent fin rot. It sounds like the tank cycling is part of your issue. That alone can be a real stressful situation for a fish let alone a newly acquired sick fish. Maybe you can find a smaller container (like a 1-2 gallon) to keep him in and do every other day water changes just until his tank is cycled. It would probably be far less stressful for him as well while he is being medicated and you don't have to worry about your tanks cycle being affected or alternatively the cycle affecting your fish. Might be the best situation temporarily. Heck you could get something that would work at a dollar store I bet. It just sounds like a bad tank to keep a sick fish in right now. India almond leaves also have antibacterial properties you could add those. As long as your room temp is around 80 the water should stay a decent temp. It is summer after all.

Big City Bettas I used aquarium salt for ten days once i got him home, curling fin and few holes. Worked, but then came on another fin/tail and i dosed agian. Never stopped after a month later of clean water changes. I thought since my tank didnt cycle yet, that was the case so 50% daily changes until the nitrites went down. Literally yesterday my cycle was about to finish .25 or less nitrite and high nitrate but of course my betta got this white lump on his head. Not too big but made him go crazy around the tank. Hits the filter, swims right in to a decoration and then the heater and then i have to catch his attention to make him stop. Made an emergency trip to my pet store to buy this hopefully cures it.

TheGolemHunter I wouldn't advise it for just fin rot as it is mainly acriflavine and victoria green which are harsher than you need for fin rot. I personally would use aquarium salt and meth blue dips. Keep in mind fin rot is caused by poor water conditions so you probably aren't doing frequent enough or large enough water changes. Might be an excessive bioload if the betta has tank mates. Just my thoughts as I've had mixed results with the API fungus cure. I am sure many others will give you their opinions so I urge you to research on your own as well so you can make an informed choice.
