How to set up a 2.5 gallon Betta fish tank. This video came about when I saw the tiny tanks on sale for Betta fish for the upcoming Finding Dory movie. Those tanks were way to small for a Betta to have any quality of life. This video shows two cheap and easy ways to set up a tank with everything a Betta fish needs. Both of the set ups are either the same price or cheaper than buying one of those smaller tanks. The sand should be 1.5- 2.5 inches deep. The plants are Anubias. We added Flourish root tabs to fertilize the plants. These plant do well in low light conditions. The heater is a Marina Betta heater. Bettas are tropical fish and a constant temperature of 78-80f degrees. The lighting is a LED desk lamp. We recommend all tanks should have a filtration system. A sponge filter is a good option for smaller tanks. You should always cycle your tank before adding a new fish. Once the cycling is complete 25-30% weekly water changes will help to keep the tank balanced. If you are not using a filter, you need to be able to commit to water changes every 3-4 days. Smaller tanks without filtration require a lot of work. *Bowls, vases or glass ornaments are not suitable homes for Bettas. If you are looking into getting a Betta fish as a pet the widely accepted minimum is a 2.5 gallon tank. You would need to considerably lower the water level.

I know this is a bet late but, usually they poop out green because of the food. Ex: If you feed your goldfish peas a lot, then that explains the green poop.

You van just use regular pet store bought sand for live plants? It doesnt have to be that black soil type stuff in your video about setting up the divided ten gallon tank?

No, you can use any substrate as long as you use root tabs to feed the plants. If there is a source of food for the plants, they will grow. Lighting helps too.

Thank you. Water conditioner make the water safe for fish were as kick start is the beneficial bacteria in a bottle that helps start the tank cycle process.

You need a 20 gallon very heavily planted tank and a minimum of 5 females.

The last time I went they didn't have them. I'm thinking they may just have got them in for the release of the Finding Dory movie. I would get a blue background and find some shark stickers. I am going back to that store in a few weeks. I'm looking for a different table cloth for a new tank theme

I prefer more 'adult' themed fish tanks, as I don't have any little ones running around, but I love your ideas for both saving money and giving betta fish a good home. Definitely prefer live plants, so I'll go with your shark themed tank. Both are really cute though.

I like the shark one! it makes the illusion that the tank is bigger. I have a quick question..in this situation, where u already had the fish, do you take the tank water out of an aquarium that is already cycled, or do you cycle the tank with the fish in it?

I fully cycled the tank before putting the fish in. I don't use aquarium water from my other tanks. The beneficial bacteria is mostly in the filter not the water. There is some in the water but not enough to cycle a tank. I run spare sponge filters in my other tanks so I always have cycled media. I put the cycled sponge filter into the new tank and let it run without fish for another 1-2 weeks. I add fish food to the tank 2-3 times a week, do 10% water change once a week and add safe start each time. Once the water test kit says all the levels are safe the tank is fully cycled. This has worked for me every time. I always cycle a tank before adding a new fish. I'm sure there are other ways of doing it but this works for me.

I saw the Finding Dory tanks at Petsmart. These tanks are a waaaay better alternative to those cheap, plastic, mass produced tanks that they sell.

There were elements I liked about both tanks. It was very clever of you to use the tablecloths & stickers as backgrounds.
