Great video and beautiful tank! This is the exact situation I want to keep female bettas in (with Endler's livebearers and Cherry barbs). Do the betta pick off endler fry? That would be a desirable outcome for me to control the population. Also I love bettas :)

I have a baby female (purchased from Petco) in a 3 gallon tank. She's only about an inch long, not including her tail. What is the timeline for her to reach adulthood, and does the water temperature have anything to do with her growth? Also, I heard that I need to change 50% of her water DAILY, due to hormones that are released that would keep her from growing. Is that true?
Her tank mate is a gold Inca "Mystery" snail. I've only seen her nip at him once. Generally, she doesn't pay any attention to him.
As a cat person (new to fish keeping), I really appreciated the "station identification break" when you cut to the kitty's activities. Hilarious!

betta sorority tanks are very inhuman. they are solely for the humans happiness, there is no benefit at all to keeping betta’s together and results in unnecessary stress, fighting, and spread of disease

"there is always the risk that they can injure or even worse..kill each other."

If you want to completely eliminate the risk, don't have a sorority tank at all. Imo, the well-being of the animals comes before our wants, and I know everyone wants to see all the pretty fish in one big tank. Unpopular opinion, but tell me I'm wrong.

WARNING: I did not watch the video yet! Do not say "watch the vid first" cuz I'm impatient

But looking through the thumbnail, females will not do bad things if they have a odd number of fish.
If you have equal females they will gang up on each other

Lia White
Lia White - 7 years ago
Fishan Chips should be. I would do 4-5 because they will then establish a pecking order. Then again it can stress them out. However a 20 gallon with a divider would personally be my choice. I don't like keeping betas together at all but sometimes sororities work out. Just do a lot of research and you should be okay. :)

Athena Exotics
Athena Exotics - 7 years ago
Hi, for everyone wanting a sorority let me just say they are highly unethical, and actual cruelty. Even wild splendens, a totally separate species that are as close to splendens as wolves are to dogs, do not naturally live together. They will come across each other in the wild, but they have miles of space to claim territory, and avoid each other. Our domestics were also bred for aggression, females are not less aggressive than males.
I just lost the last of the girls from my sorority. Every single one died earlier than they should have, even with me splitting them up. I gave them beyond perfect care. I did everything right and 8 months in realized the lack of aggression was stress, not because they were okay. That is happening here, too. Those girls are not happy with each other, they have been shut down out of fear. Negative reinforcement or dominance training in dogs has the same effect. It may look like its working or they're calm, but that is not the case.

Please reconsider sororities, they are, flat out, abuse.
Athena Exotics
Athena Exotics - 7 years ago
HarrisonCountyStudio at the time theyre displaying theyre already too stressed. I did have a sorority. I thought it was fine, my girls acted the same way as these girls amd when i separated them they were so different and that was because of stress. Bettas are solitary fish, theres evidence to support that. Its human bias.
HarrisonCountyStudio
HarrisonCountyStudio - 7 years ago
I've never heard of a sorority tank before. I've personally kept a couple of female betas in a community 30 gallon with green swords tails, guppies, and a clown pleco. All four of my females betas behaved from time to time like these did @10:14, however it was all show and no go. The longest shows lasted only a few moments. Then one fish would turn in a slightly different direction and the other would swim on by. It didn't happen that often either. I think it this tank can be successful based on a few variables: our size of tank, type of tank mates, and maybe some of the tank mates are viewed more as dither fish to distract, and how well it is planted.
Athena Exotics
Athena Exotics - 7 years ago
Jenni __ no they wouldn't bc some fish don't show stripes due to color, and some don't stripe at all :) hence how u can keep bettas in bowls fully colored up. Its not their looks you should be watching, its their behavior, and all their behavior is off and unnatural

I am super glad to hear you talking about the myth of not having two females or two male Bettas together. I have been keeping fish for over 40 years and have consistently had two male and two female bettas, for a total of 4 fish, in 20 gallon tanks. Often when I mention this on other betta sites, the people get downright nasty and insulted that I would suggest keeping multiple bettas in a single tank. Sadly, they never have a answer for me when I ask how they imagine these fish live in rivers together in the wild. Do they imagine there is 1 male or female pet river? The answer is, as you note, adequate space and cover. You can add food supply in with space and cover as a third way to keep multiple bettas in one tank. yes, they are territorial fish, with the males being especially so, but certainly you can keep multiple fish in larger tanks without incident. Best Regards.

My solution is to breed them, females get less cranky once bred, I currently own 2 females with a male in a 40gal community tank. There's also 2 month old and adult male guppies in there, under normal circumstances with new Betta fish it would've been a disaster, but mines just walk by each other without giving a fuss, I made them become such docile through banning live food, and through breeding the females once each month. Problem is taking care of the fry is a pain in the butt.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Mike Hamada The life span of a betta that's been properly cared for is actually 7-9 years. Live or frozen is the best food, but for conditioning to spawn live is unequivocally the best option. Spawning a female more than once every 3 months let alone constantly is extremely hard on her overall health. What you're saying about live food being bad is just untrue. This is just what works and is convenient for you so you don't care to hear that it's not right.
Mike Hamada
Mike Hamada - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox the females I own were already a year old, I've had both of them since the ends February 2016, which is a longer life span, than that of most other Betta in aquariums owned by newbies. they still look extremely colorful and healthy. Frozen food is better than life food, and that's where you're wrong, life food is bad for fish ESPECIALLY after breeding female bettas, because they already are exhausted from breeding, and life food isn't something that waits for them and says eat me, they will try to escape making her waste even more energy. Also It may have been an over statement, when I said 1 month, it's more like once each 50 days which is still very close to 1 month. Any how I prefer frozen food over live food, it encourages aggression, and tires your fish.
Experts advice breeding Bettas once around every 7 months, but bettas can breed once every 10 days which is unadvised to test, so I prefer once each month or two months.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Mike Hamada Breeding any female that often is incredibly hard on their bodies let alone when you aren't feeding live. Doing that isn't humane to the female not to mention you're taking years off their lives.

I had about 6 corydoras can a 29 gallon tank with my betta and this morning woke up to find one of them dead and floating at the top of the tank. Immediately took the fish out and did a 30% water change. I fed the rest of the fish to make sure they were eating properly and they all ate including my betta. Just an hour ago I was checking on the fish and realized my betta wasn't really swimming or being very active like normal. I put a little extra food in again to see how he would react and he didn't seem at all interested. he didn't even come up to the glass when he saw me like he usually does. Considering the death of my other fish earlier this morning I'm very worried. Is there anything that could be causing my betta's behavior? I put him in a quarantine tank for the time being with a little aquarium salt. The ammonia is at zero in the 29 gallon. There is no aggression in this tank whatsoever so no cause for stress. Is there anything more that I can do?
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
MintChocolate If that's what it looks like and (to me) sounds like it then yes, you should treat the whole tank as if they have it as well because they have been exposed. I'd encourage you to do your own research on it as I haven't had an outbreak in years. For a 29 community I'd be doing 30-40% water changes every week. Hope this helps!

Princess Lunchbox He had a white fuzzy film on his mouth and fins that spread in a matter of hours. I think that's columnaris based on what I googled? (could definitely be wrong of course) I changed the water 50% again in the 29 gal and after that the parameters tested fine. I think I originally waited too long between water changes, hence poor water quality (I'm a newbie fishkeeper). I'll try furan 2 and kanamycin. I didn't know it was safe to treat the whole tank
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
First you need to make certain that it was columnaris. If it was then I'd use a combination of furan-2 and kanamycin to treat it. Columnaris (all 4 strains actually) cannot live in salt solutions of more than 1% this info might help clear it out of your tank. Keep in mind corydoras (unlike bettas which prefer brackish water) are salt sensitive. I can provide more info if you need.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
MintChocolate Well if it really was columnaris then it isn't safe to add fish and you'll have to treat the tank as well as the survivors. It's a bacteria not a actual fungus and is highly contagious. Caused by poor water conditions usually, fish with weakened immune systems are struck by it first.
MintChocolate
MintChocolate - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox It turned out to be an obvious case of columnaris after a few hours. He died the next day sadly but none of my other fish seem to be sick thank goodness. How long should I wait to be sure it's safe before I replace the fish?

Is there any way to tell if bettas are aggressive before putting them into communities? I know you can put them in front of a mirror, and they can also see their reflection in the glass of their tank. I wanted to add one of my bettas to a sorority, but she flares at her reflection. Maybe it's because her reflection is so close and is 'following' her, but I'm not sure.

In fact many varieties of wild bettas can be housed in community groups with both males and females, (patoti and rubra come to mind) though this is not advised for splendens as they were bred with the initial sole intention of fighting the males.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Mr. Purple Betta splendens (domestic bettas) were speciated out of their wild cousins through many years of selective breeding. In most varieties of wild bettas the females out of breeding season can often be found grouped together. Many articles out there based on the study of wild bettas note this behavior. Splendens were first bred in Thailand over 600 years ago as Siamese fighting fish, for sport. The males were separated early as to promote aggression but the females were often housed together in large basins and tubs. I am sorry, but with splendens what's "natural" isn't what most think. If females never experience isolation they almost never become aggressive. I know this to be true. Female bettas are fine housed together when the keeper is experienced and responsible.
Mr. Purple
Mr. Purple - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox where did you find that females group naturally in the wild? I've never heard of that :/ ?
Although sororities can work out for years and the fish can all be active and healthy I think Alex just means it isn't necessary nor natural though he/she put it harshly.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Alex J Wow. You really don't do any research on things before forming an opinion and attacking people based on that don't you? For your information the females won't kill each other. Actually they have found females tend to group with each other in the wild. Do they all need their space? Absolutely. Most animals do or they get more aggressive. Is it risky? No more than keeping cichlids. Is it a "death trap"? Not if the person doing it has done their research and is an experienced fish keeper. Bettas have a very complex social structure that will increase their quality of life if done properly. Do you even know what a fact is? Because I think you're mixing up a fact with an alternative fact. One is based in knowledge and evidence, the other based on opinion.
Asherly EverAfter
Asherly EverAfter - 7 years ago
Alex J, I know a person who has been breeding show quality Bettas for years and also keeps a successful sorority. While you may be stating a fact, it is also a fact that not all sororities fail and the fish remain healthy and active through the span of their life.
Alex J
Alex J - 7 years ago
Creative Pet Keeping Sorry, but what you are doing here is highly irresponsible.
Sororities are a death trap, it will fail, it is a fact.

Female will kill each other, what you are doing is stressing this betta, they are more likely to get sick and infections are common.
If you need to separate the fish, to get "time out" it means is not compatible with others!

This is only good for the owner, you are not taking into consideration the fish.
