"Rarely fight" don't let them fight at all. It is so stressful on the fish and could turn into a disease or them nipping at their own fins.

Fact the cichlids mostly all especially Africans got iq of 5-7 years old. And once fish that doesn’t fight is koi
Goldfish :D
Goldfish :D - 7 years ago
AquaZone Aquarium Services Mtl Izabella. You are also saying bettas are smarter so they point out things they don't like. That makes absolute no sense. You are acting as fish have a specific IQ that is different from other fish. That is not how it works. It has to do with the ways they survive and putting a bunch of bettas in a tank isn't doing it. Friendship isn't on a bettas survival list.

I have a betta fish (kody) for almost 2 years in a nice 3 gallon. Has nice plans. I feed him 2 times at day. (I rotate pebbles, blood worms, flakes). I’m thinking in getting him a female or 2. Getting a 5 gallon tank. I’m worry something going wrong. I love my fish I feel he doesn’t want to be alone :(
Helder Onetti

PotatoSnail thank you man. I think I will hold for now until get a bigger tank and like you said.
PotatoSnail
PotatoSnail - 7 years ago
Your tank is not big enough to try multiple bettas. If you had maybe a 30 gallon at least you might go for it.... but only 5 gallons is going to be way too cramped. They will rip at each others fins and they will get stressed and look kinda ugly and beat up. And if you did get a large tank, its better to get odd numbers of fish, one male with one female is going to lead to a very unhealthy female who gets no rest. You need multiple females so none of them gets bugged by the male too much. Just make sure there are tons of hiding places and decor that blocks the sightlines of the fish. If they see each other all the time they can get kinda mean, since they are bred specifically for aggression. In a 5 gallon I'd probably just stick with some snails or a small bottom feeding fish like a cory cat. Corydoras are pretty chilled out and shouldn't draw the bettas attention at all.

Anon ymous

I have a very timid male dumbo (pink like your dumbo female) he refuses to flash at mirrors and will swim away faster than a torpedo when he sees one xD I also own 5 females, they reside in a 34 gallon tank with a couple of corydora and some pest snails (I let the pest snails breed for my assassin snail to eat) I would never consider putting my male in with the females unless I wanted to breed and that's mainly for his safety, 2 of my girls are almost a year and a half old and take crap from no fish ;-;
Also, how do you get your tank planted that well? I have some planted bogwood and hidey holes/silk plants but I strugglee with underwater plant life for some reason -.-

Gritting my teeth the hole video. I understand not leaving them in bowls of course but males should NEVER be kept together!!! Super bad advice, take a look at all the ripped fins....... If you insist on doing this I would double if not triple this tank size and plants... That's retarded imo

Love seeing all the Betta nazis screaming in the comments below. You clearly are speaking from experience whereas they clearly are regurgitating information they have heard from others. There is nothing more insufferable than Betta know-it-alls.
jasonlhinseattle
jasonlhinseattle - 7 years ago
I agree. People just love to tell each other how wrong they are. Betta's are like every other living creature. They have different personalities. I had one Betta who flared at his reflection in the tank wall so much he'd exhaust himself. I went out of town for 3 weeks and my partner removed the divider between a 20 gallon take housing two males cause he thought they were lonely. When i got back i freaked out, come to realize they were way more active having another fish around. Granted they tended to flare a little but had establish territories on each side of the tank. They would meet in the middle do a little flaring then get bored. They eat together every day and don't even flare then. They could just be docile at nature, but whatever the reason... I don't think there is anything wrong with what she did, it seemed to work for her. Good size tank, lots of cover, the fish seem to get along, no ripped fins. They have even spawned in the tank.... As a general rule it might not be a good idea, but with the right fish and tank size and cover, it can work for sure.

I have a 50 gal heavily planted tank with bettas that I've successfully bred (well successful because a few strong ones lived). 4 males 4 females and they all get along so well. The females and males have their areas they like, but they do not try to kill each other. They are a year old now and still no problems. I've introduced a new little female who fits right in.

Duane Vigue

Bettas are super aggressive and you should keep them alone for the most part.  Ive been keeping them for over 20 years and RARELY can you keep them together.  Sometimes, if youre lucky, you can keep bettas with other fish, but even then it can go bad in the blink of an eye.  This is REALLY bad "advice" to be giving out.  I like how you compare them to cichlids, saying "Well, theyre aggressive and fight too, so whats the big deal".  REALLY bad "advice".
WindexSniper
WindexSniper - 7 years ago
This is insanely inaccurate information. All of your fish showed signs of aggression through out the video. Many of them were flaring. And several of them (most notably the red female) had nipped fins. Bettas are breed to be aggressive. It is not rare that they will fight to the death it's incredibly common. Wild Bettas are not nearly as aggressive. You are encouraging people to kill their fish. And for having breed your bettas you have a surprisingly small number of fry. I wonder if that's because you house them in the same tank as the adults?

betta sorority tanks are very inhuman. they are solely for the humans happiness, there is no benefit at all to keeping betta’s together and results in unnecessary stress, fighting, and spread of disease

Again, my frame of reference is LARGE tanks. if its to small then ah heck no, thats impossible
Siren's Bay
Siren's Bay - 7 years ago
In which case it would depend on acclimating the bettas to each other in order to tone down potential aggressiveness, i dont really agree with trying to sorority them but you can still have multiple without much trouble

BayIsProbablyOkay - 7 years ago
Siren's Bay that’s different, i have my male betta in a 10, soon to be 30, with fish (5 neon tetras and several different snails specifically) other than another betta. putting several aggressive bettas together is much more stressful and dangerous
Siren's Bay
Siren's Bay - 7 years ago
if its a big enough tank, got enough plants, any betta will be fine. I had a male in my 50 gal with a bunch of other fish for months and had no fighting issues. No torn fins at all, i was hella surprised seeing as he was only in there on a temp basis and then became longterm cause he got depressed when i removed him. I dont think anything smaller than a 30 is ok, way to territorial for anything small.

It works for me. I am having 2 males and 5 females in the same tank. I watch them a lot. Females follow males for breeding but will be chase away. I think the reason is the males have not made a nest yet. My tank filter and light are quite strong, so it is hard to make bubble nest. The males flare each other and stop, they don't bite.

My betta is happily housed in a ten gallon with 5 guppies and a baby clown pleco. It really pains me to see those betta fish at petsmart or walmart or, honestly, just about any place you can buy fish in those cups. It's alright if they're going to a proper home I suppose, but that's rarely the case because of how they're sold. People get the wrong impression. I know, because I mistakenly kept my betta in a bowl without knowing any better. once I did the research, I realized that i've been an ass, and I got him a 10 gallon where he could have some socialization and what-not.

this is all true, male bettas fight because mostly they are in a tiny tank,....what I think is they fight over the living space.
because I had 2 male bettas with 7 females, and they fought once, the reason is they were in a small tank, once I put them in a 30 gallon long( with the 7 females) they would both flare up and go their own ways.

I am so going to try this. ..I was planning on a sorority of 8 - 10 in a 75 gallon...now I think I may increase it to 12 females and 2 males and see how it goes....thanks for posting this.....
Reading below a lot of people are concerned that adding a couple of males in with females is a bad idea....having kept mbuna (which crap all over bettas in the aggression stakes)...I believe that if you provide enough territories and enough escape routes and you watch your fish for stress - this can be done...it is what mbuna keepers have to do - this is no different...it is about finding the balance.....Bettas in the wild dont have partitions of glass to hide behind do they?...no.

For all the people saying this is terrible advice need to realize you can't put a bunch of Bettas together at once. It will never work. You need to add the fish slowly like adding one fish every week or two. Also, you need lots of plants and especially plants that float. I buy those fake grass like plants they sell at petsmart that you put under the gravel with the tops sticking out and I take out the center plants which are detachable. This leaves an upside down floating platform that any betta can swim into and chill. You can definitely keep these fish together without any aggressive behavior and with other fish as well. I think it's pretty obvious that if you dump ten bettas together into a 20 gallon tank you might have issues. If that's what people got and assumed they could do from this video then yeah it's bad advice, otherwise, i think it's pretty clear that if you have a fish known to have an aggressive nature then you'll need to add a community one fish at a time. Any responsible fish owner would do so. To add a bunch of these fish together at once in a small tank is pretty rash and just plain stupid, however, I don't think this video is telling people to do this.

I'm glad to see this because I've always wanted a betta but I didn't want to feel bad for it being lonely. Does anybody think that one male and two females in a heavily planted 10 or 20 gallon would work? And are there certain parameters the water could be kept at to discourage breeding but still allow them to be comfortable? I don't want to have to rehome a bunch of betta fry to a bunch of people who I know will neglect them.

I really would recommend separating them at the first sign of aggression. It may be working now, but things can change in an instant. I used to have two damselfish in the same tank that got along totally fine for months, but then out of the blue one violently killed the other. You should really be careful, your fish are at risk if any one of them suddenly decides to stop being so unusually calm.

This is a horrible idea..... I know the video had good intentions but like said before this is the exception not the rule. You can tell the person in this video has some expierence but clearly not enough as she repeatedly calls wild bettas "plakats" the betta in her tank are plakats. Wild betta at Least the ones that are the origin of our pet ones are betta imbellis. Plakat is just a tail type like veil tails or half moons.... she also says captive betta are more genetically different that wild ones and that simply is false. Betta splendens are 99.9% the same as wild ones. In fact they are so closely related that often times breeders breed captive betta to wild ones to get new color variations.... eventually the male betta will kill each other....

BETTA SPLENDENS WERE BRED OVER 600 YEARS AGO FROM WILD CAUGHT VARIETIES WITH THE INTENT AND PURPOSE BEING TO FIGHT THE MALES. THEY WERE BRED FOR AGGRESSION AND THOUGH THIS INDIVIDUAL HAS DONE IT YOU SHOULDN'T FOLLOW THE IGNORANT ADVICE GIVEN HERE. Sorry for the caps but I wanted this to catch people's attention. bettas are not special, like all other fish, they need space and water volume. Don't stick one in a vase or cup or one of those horrible boxes at the pet store advertised as a betta habitat. 3G MINIMUM but atleast 5 gallon to really thrive.
Pedarsag
Pedarsag - 7 years ago
Awesome tank. Bettas ARE NOT happy in tiny boxes. Neither will it be healthy and happy in a 1 gallon bowl box or vase but you will be missing out on the unique betta experience of watching a healthy happy betta. When I brought my first betta home and put him in a .7 gallon little box advertised as a happy little betta home I cannot help but feel like it was wrong despite my lack of knowledge on betas. I immediately ran out and bought a 5 gallon tank, very cheap, soon as I set it up and added betta basics by seachem I added the betta and immediate transformation!!!! The beta flared all of his fins and kept closing and flaring and and sort of swam around doing this for hours. He finally looked alive and it was incredible seeing a betta flare I did not know they did that!!! I had to google it to make sure I didn't do something wrong and he was dieing. He kept looking at me and flaring, honestly that's why I took him home. Of all the other bettas he was the only one who looked at me. It was much more fantastic when he looked at me win enough room to stretch his fins out. Those tiny cups at the pet store are cruel and those bettas are slowly dieing I wish I could take more home and give them a proper home.

Bred them, studied them for years... this is an absolute time bomb waiting to happen and very dangerous advice to give to people. These domestic, man created fish are bred to be more aggressive. They are not naturally social fish with one another and do not live together naturally. There is a reason they are sold separate. Just because they have not killed each other yet, does not mean they won't. If one of those males decides he wants to spawn, he will kill the other male. The females will fight each other and the last one standing will then spawn with the male. And if the female isn't removed from the tank, she too will be killed.
This is not something to be followed as it's going to end in disaster at some point and many people's fish are going to end up hurt or dead trying to copy this.
Called fighting fish for a reason.
Females can live together semi peacefully in a large enough group. Males do not live with females, they are solitary in their territory. They can live with other fish though depending on their temperament.
There is a reason why everyone who works with these fish for a living and studies them, breeds them, etc... does not do this.

Jayjay Hoyhay In case you missed many of the previous comments allow me to make this very clear to you. Betta splendens or domestic bettas, the fish in this video are NOT wild fish. They don't come from the wild. They were developed over 600 years ago by selectively crossbreeding many legit wild types of bettas to achieve a hyper aggressive specimen that could be fought for sport. So to answer your question they don't. These fish don't exist in the wild. Their ancestors do and they are peaceful. These guys were created to fight.

Flora Tea What that person was originally attacking me on was me as a breeder stating that breeders kill the ugly fish and sell the beautiful which in my 18+ years of breeding I have never done. I only cull those who have deformations or issues that will take away from the fishes quality of life. Any visually less desirable fish I give away and only charge for shipping. The ones I sell I make zero profit on and at best hope I break even on any given spawn. The people arguing that this setup is fine or even good for the fish don't know what they're talking about but the bs they're spouting supports what their doing so they keep spouting. The ignorance is very obvious when they start saying "in the wild". Bettas splendens are about as wild as a friggin goldfish is. These people are just undereducated on the fish they're keeping and find contentment in that ignorance. You're right, it is wrong. But they obviously don't care.
Flora Tea
Flora Tea - 7 years ago
@Bang} That's an awful, toxic excuse to use. That's like attacking someone for going against dog fights and then some ignorant fool goes like "Everybody has their own view about how happy a dog is". NO. The only point of view about how happy a pet is IS THE PET, NOT THE OWNER. The owner's job is to be responsible and knowledgeable, not stubborn and opinionated. That only leads to the pet's suffering.

I have a 40gal community tank that's been established for like 4 years now, I have never had a problem keeping female bettas together, occasionally a male with them. They also live with platys and shrimp in a heavily planted environment. The only Betta I have ever bought as an adult is a Koi Female who is actually the calmest/sweetest out of them all, the rest I buy as babies and let them hide in the plants until they are big enough to come out and join the rest of the crew! I absolutely love my tank and no one is aggressive! I wouldn't change a thing, but I trust adding babies more then adults. I would imagine they grow up to the community and don't have the aggression a fish could have growing up in a cup. My fish tank doesn't nearly feel as crowded as this though, everyone has room to themselves. Female bettas don't really group together and I would never trust having 2 males with them even in a 40.
Princess Lunchbox

Bang Well those people are incredibly ignorant as to what these fish were created for and how stressed this is for that fish. What this person is doing is dangerous and to spread the advice to do so is quite stupid. I'm not here to argue with people like yourself who obviously don't actually know what they're talking about. I'm not wasting my time arguing with you. Go educate yourself about betta splendens and their history and maybe I'll have something to say to you but I don't waste my time with those who haven't got a clue what they're talking about.

If you a raising these fish in a tank or in a container or anywhere in your house then you are already asking these fish to go against there nature because they are a wild fish so what's the difference if she keeps hers like that or separated they are her fish that belong in nature just like yours.

Before I attacked you, ask yourself why. You attacked someone base on your own assumption about betta fish. Everybody has their own view about how a happy betta fish is. You told someone that they are stubborn because they kept betta together. But not all people think the same as you. People do think that betta kept this way is more natural and betta for them.

I agree with you.. however I do have two bettas in one tank. One female and one male. The male always hang around like it was dead, UNTIL I put the clear bag with the female to float in the tank. Amazingly the male KNEW that was another betta in the bag. That tank also has an African butterfly fish, catfish, and sucker fish in it, and they all completely ignore each other. Not so with the betta in the bag. The male started flaring, etc. I did not intend to keep them in the same tank. I put the female in a floating acrylic tank within the tank meant for fry. That mini tank floats about an inch above the water, but the female managed to jump out into the main tank! It's a 5 gallon tank with plenty of places to hide. The male has not attacked, although it did chase the female a little bit. The female immediately hid, and the male was too stupid or lazy to go chasing after her. I intend on moving them all to a 10 gallon tank.. again with plenty of places to hide. I have no doubt that 2 males would rip each other apart. Another thing.. bettas are not my favorite fish because of their aggression... but I had an African Butterfly Fish that was lost in my 75 gallon main tank. I also got a betta.. just one.. but found that the other fish would not leave it alone and would tear it to pieces. I would not recommend bettas at all, and definitely not 2 males... but if the situation arises.. put more than one in a sizable tank where they can hide. --- REVISION --- although it is possible to keep a male and female in the tank together, that wound up with the female hiding all day long - which is unacceptable. Forget having more than 1 betta in a tank.

This is the exception, not the rule! Most bettas are not going to be this docile around each other! I 110% agree with keeping bettas in community tanks, but I do believe that they should be the only one of their species in the tank unless it is a Betta sorority kept by a very experienced hobbyist. The margin for error is just too high. There are tons of fish that get along great with bettas. I just don't see how it's necessary to put them through all of this constant stress by having them flare and constantly assert dominance over one another, even if they don't kill each other. My advice? Don't try this at home! Get some corydoras, get some ember tetras, throw in a few snails or a bristlenose or rubber lip pleco in a heavily planted 30+ gal if you want your betta to make friends. Just don't do this!
Nathan Ackerson

I tried 3 females in a 55gallon... one of them went around and killed the other two. She worked one by one... it was sad. My tank wasn't densely planted, and there weren't a ton of hiding places, maybe that was my problem. I've always wanted to work towards having a betta community tank

I know this video means well but it's terrible advice, to everyone watching who believe they can put more bettas in their sparsely planted ten gallon. Yes it can be done, but should only be attempted by someone with experience and a very very large tank with many many plants.

The advice you're giving out in the comments as well isn't great. Cichlids are territorial yes but they also coexist in the wild. Betta fish in the wild do not socialize with each other and they won't socialize with each other in a tank. All you're doing is giving them unwanted stress. If you give them enrichment and even tankmates in other forms as well as lots of attention they won't be lonely. But adding another betta isn't the best course of action. Even adding tankmates is risky, they are solitary fish, most likely depending on your betta, they're fine alone.

Females bettas are also not all peaceful you can't expect to keep 2 in a tank with a male betta and expect them to get along.

This tank is an exception not the rule,

Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
FishGuyGobies That is actually erroneous. Most wild bettas can easily be housed together with almost no aggression. I have many friends with wilds and have seen this first hand. They are far more placid than splendens. Breeding the aggression out of splendens is tricky because the fish will often only spawn after the pair has battered each other up quite a bit. The aggression is part of spawning. The males I have had that were less aggressive were also harder if not nearly impossible to breed. The females instinctually want a more aggressive male. It depends on the trait and the fish. I think you need to research bettas more because to state that you would say domestics are less aggressive and territorial than wilds (which you say counterpart as though there is only one type of wild betta, there's actually 72 fun fact) tells me you have no foundation to what you're saying as that is unequivocally false and actually a bit laughable.
Samwise
Samwise - 7 years ago
FishGuyGobies it's true they are now bred for appearance mostly, but the generations of breeding those aggressive fish to pick out the pretty aggressive fish did not get rid of aggression. They haven't been bred for being less aggressive, just appearance, and aggression is still a part of them.
FishGuyGobies
FishGuyGobies - 7 years ago
Samwise betta splendens has also been commercially bred generations upon generations as a pet, and to be "pretty", and there has not been any breeding bettas for aggressiveness and fighting traits for generations. If anything, I would say these bettas, which are most likely sourced from big commercial fish farms, are less aggressive and terretorial than their wild counterparts. Traits can in fact be bred out of the fish if one trait is focused on while others are ignored in breeding.
Samwise
Samwise - 7 years ago
Wild betta splendens =/= betta splendens (domesticated). Some wild betta species do coexist. Betta splendens, a domesticated breed, bred through centuries for fish fighting and aggression, cannot coexist. They're too aggressive. There is absolutely no benefit to the bettas by co-inhabiting them, it's a huge risk with the only reward being your ego. Why put them through that when you can get a schooling species instead?
FishGuyGobies
FishGuyGobies - 7 years ago
Mr. Purple Of course bettas coexist in the wild... where are you getting your information from? I think this is a very good and correct video on keeping bettas together, if you actually knew the correct facts you would agree with me. betta splendens in particular do coexist together and not in isolated puddles alone like many would think. Most of the time they inhabit slow moving shallow swamps, ponds or lakes. The males and females establish terretories. Unlike some fish like the dovii cichlid, which can have huge terretories and can be very difficult to have with other fish in an aquarium it's much easier to accommodate bettas terretorial needs in a home aquarium. The only thing I do find wrong about this video is what she said about the 10g tank. I personally wouldn't keep any bettas, of any sex together in anything less than a 40 gallon breeder. Now cosidering most seasoned American cichlid keepers will have multiple 125 gallon aquariums in their household housing assorted cichlids, I don't think a 55 gallon planted betta splendens community would be too difficult, or even a 75-125g. Basically my point is, this video is mostly valid and a good example of a successful betta community.

Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Samwise And I think that is a completely fair and also reasonable standpoint to have. My only point was that this setup isn't on the same level as a sorority. This setup is an absolute recipe for disaster whereas a sorority is risky, but can be done responsibly by someone with experience. I appreciate that you're not so set in your opinion that you can't see where others are coming from. It's refreshing and I respect that.
Samwise
Samwise - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox I just think they're unethical, but I see your point. But I've heard way too many horror stories of sororities and seen even the most perfect, well-thoughtout setups fall apart. And I've seen fish in sororities, who may seem fine, but when they were removed they brightened up and got so much healthier. Maybe it can work for some, but personally I think it's a big risk, one that risks their lives, and a risk I'm not willing to take.

Princess Lunchbox whether or not they were developed from the same lines is not in dispute at least not by me. I have not exclaimed myself to be experienced in the hobby although I am not totally new. I could easily claim to have 20 years in the hobby if I'd wanted to this is YouTube after all where people talk a lot and show little. I believe people are responsible for their own actions and so let them carry their own guilt for their actions not carry it for them. So yes I will share and leave people to make up their own minds as to what to do or not do with the information. Once again have a beautiful day.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Know Hype just so you know both fighter and show were developed from the same lines. Show bettas were developed much later and the aggression still carries through. I've been breeding a very long time and back in the day tried this with fish that were raised together. It went fine until 8 months into the tank one of the males decided he had enough and killed all but one female. This is not something that these fish are ment to do and a stressed fish very well will breed. I am basing my opinion on not just personal experiences and watching others try and fail but also a deep understanding of these fish. I've spent over half my life keeping, breeding and studying betta splendens. I am not coming from a place of unfounded opinion, I am coming from one of experience. As for posting informative content on channels I'd call this more misinformation than anything else. Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should. Go ahead and share this information but know that most attempts at this will lead to injured, dead or stressed fish and that is on the person spreading misinformation on a topic they're new to.
Know Hype
Know Hype - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox at no point did I say their natural habitat was a puddle and I know that lines were developed for fighting, just as these lines were developed for show the two lines through selective breeding are not the same. Just as the outcome of them being placed in this habitat is not the same. These fish may have the genetics but they do not share the same drives as those bred to compete in fights. Hence the success evidenced, I do not doubt If you take these same fish put them in too small a tank without adequate cover and they will be forced into fight mode but they are not and so display move on it is not constant and if anything attracts the females for breeding rights. If they were stressed i doubt breeding would occur. I cannot vouch for the experience of any commenting other than my own (limited) and that of the owner of this channel. I have not checked to see if you have any informative content posted. Either way I'm not trying to change your opinion or any that share your opinion. Just as I am not about to change mine, I will like, sub and share a very informative video showing a different side to another much maligned species of fish. Have a beautiful day.

Know Hype They don't live together in rice puddles. That is wild types and it isn't even actually the small areas many think it is. Splendens were developed by people to fight. This setup is asking for disaster and that's what all the experienced keepers here are saying. It can be done but isn't good for the fish. It's stressful on the fish and this woman has made it work for now. I agree there are alot of wives tales about bettas this isn't one of them. Betta splendens were bred to fight the males, this is asking the fish to go against over 600 years of what they were bred to do.
Know Hype
Know Hype - 7 years ago
Mr. Purple this is not the first time I have seen this type of set up so I do not believe it is an exception. How many male and female betta do you believe occupy a rice paddy. After seeing this video and the comments I have no urge to replicate with my level of experience. However it does give something to aim for, if going down this route is your choice. I am not sniping at you but until you (or anyone) have tried it and given evidence of it not working as this woman has (working) under said conditions, we should believe what our eyes see. During my short time in the hobby I have found there are too many what amount to be old wives tales and too many who perpetuate them without ever trying another way.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Mr. Purple In my personal experiences I've found that females kept in groups their entire lives tend to be healthier and live longer and they are definitely more active. I totally agree with you and believe I have noticed you in betta video comments before and found myself agreeing with your stance then as well. You obviously know what you're talking about. I was more addressing Samwise and his hatred of sororities.
Mr. Purple
Mr. Purple - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox that's the reason I argued that saying 2 females and a male is wrong. Ignoring the other (male) problem. The minimum for a sorority is 5 bettas and a 20 gallon long. You shouldn't expect two females to get along in a 5 gallon. Sororities on the other hand I'm okay-ish with. As long as a responsible fish keeper is taking proper care of them. But I just I don't see how it would benefit the fish.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
They were bred the same way but not housed the same into adulthood. That is the difference. Females can be just as if not more aggressive than males but that isn't usually the case which is why a sorority is for responsible, experienced fish keepers in my opinion.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Samwise actually back when the splendens were first being developed the females were usually housed in large groups in ponds, tubs and basins. The nature in which they were kept when these fish were developed is what makes sororities possible and when done correctly are just fine. It does make sense when you start to research betta splenden development because that's how they were housed. Females together, males in small bottles
Samwise
Samwise - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox Females are just as aggressive. You can't breed for aggression for fighting fish without both males and females. It makes no sense to assume that females are not aggressive when they have been bred the same exact way and share the same genetics. Sororities are wrong too.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Samwise this is true and I totally agree with you, but exceptions can be made for females when done properly as they were not used for fighting but still have aggressive tendencies much like cichlids.
Samwise
Samwise - 7 years ago
Mr. Purple I agree. This is an absolutely terrible setup and this will not work out well. They're posturing and nipping already and they're absolutely going to end up fighting. You should not be teaching viewers such inhumane care. This is how to end up with several dead bettas. They are separated for a reason. Betta splendens, the domesticated, have been bred for aggression for so long, they can NOT be housed together. They are territorial, aggressive, SOLITARY FISH.

Wow I'm amaze! I have my own sorority of 3 females. I'm jealous of your set up! Well done! Would you mind if I ask what's the name of that floating plants you have? And when you started this group of bettas, did you put them all together? Or one at a time? How young were they when you first got them?

I might put 1 male and 3 female in a 5 gallon tank or is it too risky? If it is ill just change it to a bigger tank.

Raikiri Furude Tachibana - 7 years ago
I got 4 female bettas with a couple of cardinal tetra in a 13 gallon tank with a lot of plants. They all live peacefully, no nipping, some flaring but for 3 seconds. I needed to move one betta out because it was fighting with everyone and everything including my sponge filter...... 0_0;; I moved her in a 4 gallon solo tank. Thanks for the advise.
Mr. Purple
Mr. Purple - 7 years ago
Raikiri Furude Tachibana don't put any females in your 5 gallon. It's too small for multiple bettas. Just get one betta. A betta sorority (at least 5 females in a 20 gallon long+ tank) is possible but should only be done if you have a good amount of experience and are prepared and do lots of research but NO MULTIPLE BETTAS IN A 5 gallon

Raikiri Furude Tachibana just put females, in my LFS they put 15 female bettas in a 3 gallon tank (im not kidding) and they are doing good. i dont reccomend doing that tho, just put 3 females in ur 5 gal

Raikiri Furude Tachibana - I think it's to small and not to mention not all bettas are friendly and are very territorial so I wouldn't recommend doing that but try doing it in a bigger tank.....

animal freak not meaning to offend or anything, but no need to cuss. At all. Both of you are right. The only way it isn’t natural instinct is when they breed, but males and females really shouldn’t be placed together unless breeding by experienced people. Besides, Colorful Fish/Meredith is experienced, and are you?

AB W - 7 years ago
With all due respect, I understand what you mean about being against their instincts, as they're obviously together at some point to breed, yes...however, breeders don't keep them together for long. Sometimes they aren't even compatible, and one or both will fight and try to kill eachother if one or the other isn't ready to breed. Housing them together as a community will definitely result in one or more of them dead.
animal freak
animal freak - 7 years ago
Colorful Fish how the fuck if is it against there instincts bitch how the fuck are there so many they breed dumbass
AB W
AB W - 7 years ago
Exactly. I've even read horror stories on forums about experienced aquarists still finding dead fish among a sorority that had seemingly been fine and adjusted. Regardless of tank size, people have said that it's a crap shoot w/sororities, and things can go wrong. Definitely not for beginners. There's apparently a certain way to add new fish for a "pecking order", having an appropriate number of females, providing enough hiding spot coverage, etc. Cramming them into a 10g would be like setting those poor things up for disaster, and an ugly death for sure. I wouldn't do it.

Meredith
Meredith - 7 years ago
NO OMG NO! Don't listen to their advice.... males and females DO NOT live together, that will result in injury/death. Holy cow I can't believe she said yes............. females must be in large enough groups to spread out aggression as in too few of numbers they WILL fight and kill each other. Males should NEVER be with females, completely against their natural instincts.

AquaZone Aquarium Services Mtl Izabella i agree but if there was a large tank housing all the bettas at a pet store they will most likely not get along. AquaZone Aquarium Services Mtl Izabella You are horribly misinforming people. As far as betta splendens (domestic bettas) there is no "in the wild". Betta splendens were speciated out of a few varieties of their wild cousins through intensive selective breeding over 600 years ago in Thailand. The were developed with the sole initial purpose of fighting the males, hence the name Siamese fighting fish. You're horribly ignorant on actual betta history. Betta splendens, the species you're addressing was developed to fight the males. That's what they were made to do. This "in the wild" stuff you keep spouting is also erroneous. Wild bettas are much more peaceful than domestic. I think it's shameful that you're pushing this potentially dangerous information.
Why am I like this
Why am I like this - 7 years ago
okapi323 it depends on the personality of the bettas... there are horror stories of males getting to each other and fighting to the death. It happens quite often.
AquaZone Aquarium Services Mtl Izabella
AquaZone Aquarium Services Mtl Izabella - 7 years ago
okapi323 until death ? Maybe the original plakat from the wild, but the fancy Bettas it looks more like a rap battle. Given room for the loser to swim away, after they do their flaring dance no one is dying ... the key is space and lots of vegetation. For instance if you leave female in with male in the small breeder space after they finish , yes he could cause her real damage because needs to protect fry, but that's a breeding behaviour not their social one

They don't live together in the wild. These are man made creations - multiple types of wilds put together to create these fish. Some wild counterparts are fine in groups, others aren't. These ones are created to be aggressive to show off their fins.
And breeding is not easy, done it myself for a number of years... and egg tube? The ovi? That has nothing to do whether or not the female is ready to breed..........
AquaZone Aquarium Services Mtl Izabella
AquaZone Aquarium Services Mtl Izabella - 7 years ago
Paul Beck to breed them I separate te breeding male with transparent plastic separator and once the desired female egg tube is showing n his nest is built, add her to his section n within a day it's done n remove her
