How to set up a Betta fish tank (Basic planted Betta tank)

How to set up a Betta fish tank. A basic planted Betta fish tank. I have kept the tank simple to allow for plenty of swim room for my Betta. The tank is a 2.5 gallon. The sand should be 1.5- 2.5 inches deep. The plants are Anubias, and Amazon sword. These plant do well in low light conditions. Amazon sword plants get large and grow quickly. The heater is a Marina Betta heater. (Link below) ** Tank update...this tank is now heavily planted. The Amazon sword grew very large and the anubias has also grown well. We also added Marimo moss balls. The tank also has filtration. Please see updated videos. We recommend all tanks should have a filtration system. A sponge filter is a good option for smaller tanks especially with Betta fish. You should always cycle your tank before adding a new fish. If you are not using a filter, you need to be able to commit to 80- 100% water changes every 2-3 days. Tanks without filtration require a lot of commitment and work. *Bowls, vases or glass ornaments are not suitable homes for Bettas. If you are looking into getting a Betta fish as a pet the widely accepted MINIMUM is a 2.5 gallon tank but bigger is always better. You can have any substrate. For plants to grow they need food so we add root tabs. We sell them on our website.

Your channel is amazing! I was one of those unaware new fish-owner people who had a 1 gallon, unfiltered tank. I changed the water every day, and for a time, he was fine, but then he tripled in size. He started to become lethargic and his fins were clamped, even though I could not find any sign of disease. Then I found your channel. I have since gotten the heater, thermometer, and filter you recommended and upgraded to a 2.5 gallon tank. I have only added the heater thus far (filter took longer to ship), but he is already a different fish--he is super active, his fins are on display and he built a bubble nest on the anubias plant I have floating in the tank! I am looking forward to adding the corner filter today you recommended and appreciate all of the guidance! Your videos are so interesting and make the whole process a lot easier to understand and enjoy! Thank you!
Rebecca S
Rebecca S - 7 years ago
I thought I'd provide an update. I now have the corner filter you recommended installed for a few weeks and the tank looks great. My betta's fins have already almost entirely grown back (he bit them when I was on vacation and my neighbor didn't check on him as often as I'd hoped) and he is active all day long. I am so relieved I found your channel and enjoy seeing all of the new ideas that you have. The links and reviews you provide have been so helpful. I have also cleaned the tank as you recommended and it worked great and seemed to stress my betta much less than my approach before where I removed him from the tank. It is so nice to have such a happy, healthy betta on my desk to enjoy every day while I work!

I have a 5 gallon with a filter and I used the same sand how necessary is it to cycle the tank tank is new but I already have my beta I don't know if it is safe to add the beta before the tank is cycled
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
If you don’t cycle the tank you need to do 30-40% water changes every 2-3 days till the tank is cycled. You could add something like tetra safe start and that would give it a boost.

Kanha Dubey
Kanha Dubey - 7 years ago
Hey what do you think about conditioning ??
2 week is compulsory or it is okay with 1 week only because I spawned my female all the times after 1 week of conditioning..
Unfortunately in the latest spawn the male ate all the eggs again (he was a new one !!) whatsoever I think so that the lack of conditioning period might be a problem that the eggs are not developed properly but I have no idea scientifically.
BTW what do you think ??? Is that possible ??

The plant on the right is an amazon sword and needs to be planted in the substrate to survive. The other is an Anubias and can either be planted as long as you don't plant the rhizome or fixed to wood and decorations.

i used that brand of sand. it spiked my pH levels like crazy! my tap water has a pH of 7.2. the sand made it go up to 8.2! this is a really good setup but i do recommend doing a fishless cycle to build up the beneficial bacteria in the filter media- which this tank does not have- before introducing the betta and that process takes a month or more

Is it necessary to cycle a brand new 10 gallon tank before introducing my crown tail betta?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
For aquascaping it's really all down to personal taste. I have found the bigger the tank the more plants the betta prefers. They don't like large open spaces.
Erendirajasmin
Erendirajasmin - 7 years ago
I ended up purchasing the safe start and just placed my crown tail in the tank. He seems to be happier after I upgraded him from his 2.5 gallon tank to the 10 gallon. Now I would like to begin aquascaping. any advice?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Ideally yes, if you choose not to I'd recommend getting something like Tetra Safe start. This will help start the cycle but for 2-3 weeks you will need to do extra water changes to keep the water safe for your betta.

cycling the tank before you put the fish in would be a good idea so there is enough bacteria to handle the waste produced by the fish
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Whilst this is partially true most of the bacteria is in the filter. It takes many many months and lots of stress on the fish if you're going to not do large to full 100% water changes to allow a small colony of bacteria to grow on the surfaces in the tank. Whilst it can be done it is difficult to balance and can be very stressful for the fish. A filter and cycling the tank first is always better.
Kitzo
Kitzo - 7 years ago
Just because there isn't a filter doesn't mean there is nothing to cycle. The water is what cycles, the filter only houses most of the bacteria(the bacteria also houses on substrates, plants, and decorations in the tank.) The fish will still produce ammonia that will be converting into nitrite and nitrate, and having a fish in a tank that is not cycled is very stressful on them. It is best to cycle any tank (filter or not, even though a filter is a necessity) before adding fish.

Im getting a betta fish soon and thought you had to cycle the tank? Am I wrong?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Ideally yes. If you choose not to I'd suggest you get something like tetra safe start to help boost the bacteria growth, it's doesn't instantly cycle the tank but it does help a lot. Also you need to do water changes of 25-30% several times a week and then once it's cycled you can go to once a week. If the tank isn't cycled the ammonia is extremely dangerous to your fish and needs to be diluted regularly till the tank is cycled.
CreatureComforts
CreatureComforts - 7 years ago
So if there's a filter in the tank, you need to cycle?
Lifewithpets

When we did this video there was no filter. If there's no filter there's nothing to cycle. We now have filters in all the tanks.
Alexandra Rainey
Alexandra Rainey - 7 years ago
Why did you choose to not place a filter in your tank? I've read that if there's no filter that you should expect to do a water change every 2-3 days to keep nitrate levels down
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
This is an older video and I didn't use filters back then. I did however do water changes every 2-3 days. If you read the description box it will give you the update on the tank and what we do now. We have filters in all our tanks now. If you don't have a filters you need to do 80-100% water changes to keep the Ammonia down so it doesn't harm your betta.

A 7 gallon is too small for Cory cats, you need at least 3-5 for them to be happy and they're very active fish.
Jawwad
Jawwad - 7 years ago
Lifewithpets Thanks! I decided to go with the 28L or 7 gallons instead, once I am done cycling I will get a Betta and some Cory cats
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
A 3.5 gallon tank is a great size for a betta! It is better to cycle the tank before adding the betta. You need to add an ammonia source such as fish food and some Tetra safe start which will help kick start the beneficial bacteria in the tank. The cycling process can take 4-6 weeks but usually if you use the Tetra safe start you can add the fish after a week but it is always best to test your water before doing so. Once the tank is cycled do regular water changes once a week.

I've no idea either! A 0.5 gallon is not ok! At the time time of making this video we didn't use filters but if you read the description box you will see that has changed. As for a heater we don't use heaters for most of the year because it's so hot where we live but I explain that the temperature needs to be consistent. if you can't keep a consistent temperature of 78-80f then you need a heater. I would definitely recommend filters and use them in all our tanks but there are many who don't use them. For those who don't or can't use them I say they need to do 80-100% water changes every 2-3 days. Where did this conversation take place?

I heard somewhere on another video that when you clean the tank you need to stir the sand gently to release little gas bubbles, is that true? I've never heard of doing that before
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Yes, it's very important with sand. You should vacuum it thoroughly digging deeply into it. Sand can build up toxic gas pocket that if released can seriously harm your fish. Check out my latest video on tank care and you'll see us doing it and talking about it.

Do you not have to cycle the tank before you add the fish? I only have experience with goldfish, so I generally don't know.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
If you're not using a filter there's nothing to cycle. Back then I didn't use filters and was doing water changes every 3-4 days. I now have filters in all my tanks it's a lot less work and better for the fish. If you're using a filter it is better to cycle a tank before adding fish.

How often do you do water changes because I have a 2.5 gallon with heater and a filter and I change the water once a week and I think my betta still has fin
rot
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
It's not likely fin rot. I think he is either fin biting due to stress, the filter is too strong or a decoration has damaged his fins. Bettas fins are very delicate.
Daniel Just
Daniel Just - 7 years ago
No just regular color
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago

Daniel Just
Daniel Just - 7 years ago
Would you think that about half of his back tail being gone be severe or mild, it's not to his body
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
It depends how bad it is. If severe you'd need to use medication but if only mild water changes should make a difference but you must be consistent with them.
Daniel Just
Daniel Just - 7 years ago
Okay I've heard you have to do treatments for fin rot should I or just do the water changes
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Ok, it is possibly fin rot if the tanks only been set up for a month it won't be fully cycled. However if the fin looks ripped, you could either have a decoration that's causing the damage, the filter is too strong and can cause fin damage or he is stressed and is biting his own fins. I suggest doing a 50% water change as your tank will not yet be cycled so ammonia build up could be causing the damage. For the next few weeks do 25% twice a week. Fin rot is usually caused by ammonia build up that burns the fins, It can then become infected. Fin biting is usually when the fish is stressed by his environment. So if there's not enough plants, the filter current is too strong or unsuitable tank mates.
Daniel Just
Daniel Just - 7 years ago
And what the difference between fin rot and fin bitting
Daniel Just
Daniel Just - 7 years ago
It's been set up now for about a month
Daniel Just
Daniel Just - 7 years ago
The only fin I see problems with is his back fin, and one day I came in to feed him and I noticed he had a pretty deep rip and when I checked on him later his whole back fin ripped to where it was equal to the cut and I would say he's lost about half of his back fin

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Our 2.5 gallons have a filter now, we change 25-30% of the water every week. Fin rot is usually caused by poor water quality, if your doing water changes every week without fail it's unlikely to have fin rot as long as your tank is fully cycled and the substrate vacuumed regularly. It may be fin biting? What type of filter do you use and how much water do you take out?

Hi I watched a lot of your videos and thank you for them so if you can please answer my question that I ask.about 2 or 3 weeks ago my betta fish mango died and her tank mate is another female named moonlight and they have a divided tank.mango was younger than moonlight and idk what caused mango's death.the 2 days before her death she was acting strange, she wouldn't move as much and wasn't much active as she used to be.my dad noticed that she would sometimes act like she's dead but she wasnt.Moonlight is very active and swims a lot while on other days she might just rest for awhile to get energy but that's it.I tried looking at illnesses for fish or what other things around the tank caused it.if you or anyone can answer please do.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
I think your issue is the tank is too small for two fish, water quality and no heater. The water should be changed once a week approximately 25-30% each time. This is very important for your bettas overall health. I'd also recommend getting a heater. Bettas are tropical fish and need consistent temperature of 78-80f. If the tank is divided can the bettas see each other, if they can this will really stress them out also. I'd suggest giving your remaining betta the whole tank and do weekly water changes. There should be a big improvement in overall health.

size:2.5,no heater but has a filter,i do a water change once a month and I just change the water and wash off the décor with no soap, and moonlight seems fine, shes just swimming around looking for left over food or just exploring.

Oh ya,
Can I turn on the light (LED) 24 hours non stop? Is it safe for betta fish?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
I use an aquarium sponge from Petsmart so it's easy to do. I don't usually have a problem with algae so I usually wipe the glass down once every few weeks. If you have an algae problem try doing slightly larger water changes 30-40% once a week for a few weeks that can often help. Nerite snails are great at removing algae too.

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Yes a 50 watt will work well. Either sand or gravel are good options. Sand requires more maintenance and has to be vacuumed regularly so no toxic gas pockets build up. I use sand in some tanks and gravel in others, it all down to personal preference.
Gummyz29
Gummyz29 - 8 years ago
Oh cool. I'll check those out. Would a 50 watt be good?
Also, which do you recommend gravel or sand? I am still not sure which would be better for my new 10 gallon.

I have the same size tank as you how long do I filter the tank before I buy fish
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
If you're going to fully cycle the tank before adding the fish it takes approx 4-6 weeks and you will need a source of ammonia in the tank to help start the bacteria growth. You can add something like tetra safe start. This is bacteria in a bottle and will help to get the tank started.

Can I Keep A Betta Alone In A 10 Gallon Tank?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Bettas typically live 2-4 years with 3 years being average. It's difficult to predict how long a Betta will live because there are too many varying factors.Tank size has little to do with that as long as it's filtered, heated and the water quality is kept really good through weekly water changes, then your Betta should live a long and happy life.

So i got the betta for like 2 weeks now, might be wrong,my sense of time is pretty bad.He was pretty much active but now since today he is only staying at the bottom or at the top next to the heater, which worries me.His fins are fine, and he would eat everything he gets. His color didn't change either. But now he isn't so active anymore he just stays at those places and sometimes hides
.Do you have any idea of what could be wrong? Thanks for your help

+Lifewithpets hmm well i can wait, thank you!I will write again here when everything is set up and so on :3
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Water changes are the most important thing. Most Betta fish illness is caused by poor water quality. Also don't overfeed your Betta. They're always begging for food so it's easy to overfeed them. Give them a varied diet to keep them healthy and use good quality foods. A tank take 4-6 weeks to fully cycle so if your going to put your Betta in before that I'd suggest getting something like tetra safe start. This will help to kick start your filter. Enjoy your new Betta, they're great pets!

Rusty
Rusty - 8 years ago
Oh ok. That makes sense.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
If you don't have a filter you should do 80-100% because there is no nitrogen cycle to take care of the ammonia the fish waste and food produce. It builds up quickly in a non filtered tank. If you have a filter, that takes care of the ammonia and nitrites etc so you should do approximately 25% once a week.
Rusty
Rusty - 8 years ago
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do a 100 percent water change ever. You do a 10-15 percent change then vacuum the gravel. But I'm probably wrong on this.

How much does medicine,a normal size tank, food, gravel, and plants cost ? their is a betta fish that cost 5 dollars at a near petsmart but it has to much tiny of a tank
Jade Lee
Jade Lee - 7 years ago
Hi. I hope this will help you out.
My tank was: Tetra 3 Gallon Cube Aquarium Kit $37.91
My betta food: New Life Spectrum Betta Formula $6.09
My filter: AZOO Mignon Filter 60 $19.43 (used to be $12! So I suggest maybe waiting until the price goes down, unless you really want to get your fish soon.)
I went to a small fish store for my plants and gravel, but those all ranged from $3-4. I think Petco and Petsmart brand gravel and plants cost a lot more though.
My Water Conditioner: Seachem Prime $4.89
My Heater: Tetra HT Submersible Aquarium Heater $16.04 (Again, it was $8 at the time I got it. Sigh.)
ALL OF THESE PRODUCTS ARE ACCESSIBLE ON AMAZON. MOST OF THESE ITEMS ARE "ADD-ON" ITEMS, SO IF YOU GET THE TANK, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GET THESE HIGH QUALITY ITEMS AT THEIR PRICE. Otherwise, this entire deal wouldn't work unless you're already planning to get something else for $25 already with your order.
I really hope this helps, and if something happens and you want to check your water parameters: API Ammonia 130 Test Kit $6.99
Good luck! I hope you and your betta live long, healthy, and happy!

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
A full tank set up including gravel and decoration would be approx $30-$50. You don't need medication unless the fish is sick. You will need to clean the tank once a week by removing approximately 50% of the water. You will also need water conditioner to make the tap water safe. You do not have to remove the Betta but should you choose to, you can use the cup he comes in.

I got a 1.5. Gallon tank its lights are perfect so it doesn't hurt the bettas eyes,I added leafs (fake) my betta loves the leafs he gos on top of them to rest, the tank doesn't come with a filter but,the tank is a very quick clean up,cause its so small, but I have a snail in the tank to eat the algae :) very nice video
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Thank you. As long as you do 100% water changes 2-3 times a week the tank will be fine without a filter. Just a tip, if you're doing the correct number of water changes there shouldn't be any algae in such a small tank. I'd suggest feeding a small piece of algae wafer 2-3 times a week to your snail. They don't live on tank algae alone. Snails produce a lot of waste so water changes will be very important because your tank is small and has no filter. Thanks for watching.

My betta looks like he's constipated can you help me
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Possibly, flakes can cause them to bloat, because they are broken into lots of pieces at the surface the betta takes in much more air gulping at them. A varied diet is best. Betta pellets, bloodworm and brine shrimp is a good option. I also feed mine peas once a week, they love them! I'd suggest getting pellets if you can.
Caitlyn Healey
Caitlyn Healey - 8 years ago
Is his stomach bloated? If so feed him a pea but peel off the skin. Than don't feed him for about a day or two than feed him lightly with pellets. Betta pellets. The flakes may be clogging his digestive system causing bloatyness/constipation

I want to ask everyone here a couple of questions. I've had a beta tank with soil instead of sand that I've got from the fish store, and some nice pieces of driftwood onto wich I've attached some moss and after growing for a couple of months the effect was really nice, i had the tank running with a filter empty for about 2 months. After that i have bought the most beautiful little beta but sadly after a very good first month his finn started rotting and even by medicating the tank and taking him to the pet store i didn't manage to save him... I feel like utter shit for killing the little dude and i was wondering if any of you know what i did wrong? After all this i have tested the water for the last time and everything was fine... Even the store owner had no idea what went wrong. I want to make sure i will not kill another one of these beautiful fish in the future. Any advice is good

I say with a 40L your problem might have been without changing the water. Try changing it every week, and do 25% water changes. That may help. The fish also may had internal parasites you didn't noticed. My one fish gained finrot after 3 weeks D: I tried to save him to but sometimes it is how life was meant to be. RIP TINY TIM LOVE YA BUDDIE ;_;
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Do you have a water test kit? With that you'd be able to see if the tank has fully cycled. You want ammonia and nitite to be 0 and nitrates no more than 20ppm. Once the tank is fully  cycled and you have a new betta you need to water change approximately 25% once a week.

Well i did had all the plants and the filter going, and the guy from the store gave me like a liquid containing the bacteria that was needed and told me if i don't put any fish inside for a while to just sprinkle a very very little amount of fish food in so that the bacteria colony has something to live off from... I only see two faults. I wouldn't add a fish immediately after putting in the conditioner. Its always good to do the nitrogen cycle aswell. Also, I would net out the fish instead of pouring the whole thing in. Overall a great and informative video! Keep up the good work!
Caitlyn Healey

I agree with fin damaging but I have done it before, I only put in the store cup when there is only one fish in the tank but with multiple I have to use the net. I always hate when I have to take fish out of the water ><
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Thanks for watching. To clarify the fish didn't go straight in after the water safe, it was approximately 20 minutes later. With most fish netting is best but not with Betta fish as it can damage their long fins. Using a cup is a lot less stressful for the Betta. Maybe I should have been clearer in the video. I always seem to forget something!

You don't have to have a filter but it is preferable for the overall health of your fish. If you don't have a filter you need to commit to 80-100% water changes every 2-3 days. Not having a filter is much more work than having one.

Following the advice will help but cycling a tank with a fish is always risky. Most Bettas in the stores are approx 5-8 months old. So that is all good. There's never any guarantees how long a Betta will live but with good care they typically live 3-5 years.
Brianna Constava
Brianna Constava - 8 years ago
+Lifewithpets okay thank you so much. Your advice was really helpful, so if i follow that, the betta will be healthy and fine? Also, i was going to buy an already grown betta but i'm not sure which i should buy. A baby(small) betta or an already grown one?Which would you say is better? If i do get a small one, and i take good care of it how many years would it survive?I really want it to grow healthy and have nice elongated fins:)
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
If you're not going to cycle the tank you will put a lot of stress on the Betta. To cycle a tank means the nitrogen cycle has to be completed and for that to happen your Betta would have to go through the toxic process. If you're going to add your fish before it cycled here's what I'd recommend. Water change no more than 10-15% twice a week, if you do more than that you will destroy the bacteria that will be trying to build in the filter. Feed 1-2 pellets a day your Betta will only need that as he will be small in the beginning. Be sure to use water safe with each water change and add stress coat. I don't use aquarium salt. I would strongly recommend something like Tetra safe start each time you water change. This is the beneficial bacteria in a bottle. This will really help the filter cope with your fishes waste. You will need to do all this for 6-8 weeks. Do not clean your filter during this time. If you are not careful doing this your fish will likely become ill. You're putting a huge stress on his body and immune system. The most common cause of fin rot is bad water quality from ammonia burn. Once the cycle is complete you can feed 2-4 pellets a day depending on the size of your Betta and water change 25-30% once a week. Clean your filter in aquarium water once a month or so, never clean it in tap water even if it's been treated with conditioner. You'll destroy the beneficial bacteria. I hope this helps:)
Brianna Constava
Brianna Constava - 8 years ago
+Lifewithpets also, it it okay to add chemicals such as stress coat and aquarium salt?Thank you for your help:)
Brianna Constava
Brianna Constava - 8 years ago
+Lifewithpets what happens if you don't cycle the tank and a day before you just set it up, with water conditioner, etc. So, you just leave it for a day and the next day you buy the fish and leave it for a while in the tank and then release it into it so it doesn't get a shock. Then feed it once a day?around 3/4 pellets?and do a 50% water change 1-2 times a week? Also, when you are changing half of the water, do you just get half of it out and replace that with the new conditioned water and then just add the fish. Will following this routine give it a long healthy life?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
It is best to cycle the tank before putting the fish in. It takes approximately 4-8 weeks. There are several ways to cycle a tank, this is what works for me. You need to set your tank up and start the filter running. Always use water safe when adding fresh water to your aquarium. When you start your tank up use Fluval Biological enhancer. This is the beneficial bacteria in a bottle. It helps to kick start the bacteria colonies in the filter, You will need to add a pinch of fish food 3-4 times a week. As this food breaks down it will cause ammonia and so the tank cycling process will begin. Do a 10% water change once a week. Each time you do a water change add the Fluval biological enhancer (follow the bottle instructions). Test your water after 4 weeks for Ammonia, nitrite and nitrates if all the reading are at normal level it will then be safe to add your Betta. If not then continue the process for another two week and test the water again. I have a video on my channel on cycling a tank and how the nitrogen cycle works. The cycling process in the video is for someone who already has a fish but it may help you understand the process. There are also links to the products needed in description box of that video.

+Lifewithpets I'm currently using a fish cycle. I'm planning on converting to a fish less cycle, though, after I can send the fish in my tank to my aunt's koi pond. Thank you for your suggestion! I'll try using root tabs; hopefully my plants react better to them.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
What process are you using to cycle the tank? I'd recommend to stop dosing and just use root tabs to fertilize your plants.
Lucy Mia
Lucy Mia - 8 years ago
It is a 25 gallon tank with a power filter. I change 15% of the water once a week. The tank is actually still in the cycling process but I read on many sources that it is okay to add plants into an uncycled tank.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Sometimes over dosing a tank can cause the water to be too rich in nutrients. How often do you water change, is the tank filtered and what size tank is it?
I only use Flourish root tabs. I water change 20-25% once a week. I rinse the sponge filter once a month.

So when the fish for some reason feels frightened, where is it supposed to hide? You must provide a hiding spot for your betta or any small fish really
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
Thanks for watching. A hiding spot does not have to be man made caves etc. In the wild the Betta fish would hide among the plants. As stated it is a basic planted tank, this allows the plants room to grow and the Betta room to swim. If my Bettas need to rest they go under the leaves. Thanks for your concern though but all is well:)

Your tank is way to small for this type of fish. Fantail Goldfish produce a lot of waste. For two of them they need at least 30 gallons. Being in a small tank, they will not grow properly, causing them great stress. They also need very good filtration.

Acclimating doesnt mean to just match the temperature, it means to actually slowly add tank water to te container with the betta in it until you have about 1/3 rd of ld water and 2/3 rds of new water, better more.
If you dont do this there is a high t´riskof your betta getting a osmote shock due to the different water parameters. Also never ever pour the old water into the tank. The tank ideally should be cycled before adding a fish to prevent it from getting poisoned by ammonia and/or nitrates.
This tank could be really nice if you added some more hiding places and plants more suitable for small tanks, amazone swords grow really huge.
Life plants are a great start though and way better than all this plastic stuff. :)
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 8 years ago
I'm saying if the cup is dirty there is a risk of a reaction that can cause a sudden rise in ph and ammonia which can happen when you mix dirty low oxygenated water with clean high oxygenated water.this does happen and the call to drip accumulate or float accumulate should be based on how dirty the water is and if the fish has been shipped.not just do it automatically cause that is actually very risky.
kiina91
kiina91 - 8 years ago
+Brianna Harter
please dont spread something like this. It doesnt depend on how dirty his water is at all.

They use different water in the cup than you do in your tank. Their ph, gh and kh might be lower or higher than the one of their water.
Even if his cup is freshly cleaned you still have to acclimate fish the way I explained as the water parameters still are different. Even if the difference is too low for your test to measure, It is there and it can harm your fish if you just match the temperature and then pour the fish into the new water.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 8 years ago
it depends on how long the fish has been in that water and how dirty it is.if you add water to dirty water it is likely to cause ammonia burn do to the rapid ph change from the chemical reaction from low oxygen dirty water to fresh clean well oxygenated water.normally this is an issue when fish get shipped but some of those cups in the store also aren't the cleanest so be careful.

kiina91 - 8 years ago
+Lifewithpets thank you for not taking it the wrong way.
I keep Reading in a specific fb group about bettas that people just match the temperature and call it acclimating and then have to worry about their fish because they got shocked.
Fish keeping is a constant learning process, everyone has started at some point.
I hope you will enjoy doing the in depth Video and im sure it will help alot of people with their betta fish :)
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+kiina91 Thanks for watching! You are so right, I should have made the acclimating process much clearer, I do show it in one of my other videos. I obviously need to be more specific. Amazon sword does get large however we keep them trimmed so it gives good coverage and encourages more growth. I did deal with the cycling of a tank in the description box. As I make more videos I'm learning I shouldn't assume. I assumed people would know how to acclimate, I assumed people would know not to add the old water etc. As I go along making videos I'm learning, but I usually find there's always something I forget! Your comment has inspired me to do a much more In-depth video. Thanks again for your helpful feedback and being respectful in how you wrote it.

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 8 years ago
+Zar Who? It depends on what type of tank you have. If you have a tank with a filter, then yes. Our 2.5 gallon tanks don't have filters at the moment, but we are in the process of adding mini sponge filters to them all. Tanks without filters require much more work to keep your Betta healthy, so I would recommend either a traditional filter or a sponge filter if you're thinking of getting a smaller tank. Minimum recommended tank size for a Betta is 2.5 gallons. All our larger tanks have full filtration. Thanks for watching.

Lovely setup & video! I enjoyed this very much. I do have two questions. 1. How many gallons does that heater heat up to? 2. Where do you get your canopy for your aquarium? (:

+Anthony Pets Thanks for watching! The aquarium is a 2.5 gallon and came with the glass lid. I got it from Petsmart. The heater is advertised to heat up to 1.5 gallons but I find it keeps the tank at 78/79f degrees. I got it from Amazon (link in the description box) I read a lot of reviews and many were saying they used it in a 2.5 gallon so I took the risk and I'm glad I did! The LED light is also ideal. It can sit on the top of the tank with suction cups and they are very strong! It is also fully submersible so you can attach it to the underside of the lid and it sit in the water. It looks really cool!

My planted 10 gallon has 2 inches of sand. Most plants that have roots in the substrate need a good inch to inch and a half of sand to develop large roots

Looks really nice, only thing id warn you about is how big that amazon sword will grow. I bought 3 at a similar size thinking they wouldn't get too big, but they have doubled in height and grown about 4 times as wide as it was when i got them. Just a heads up lol. Btw do you keep a betta in your comunity tank all the time, or was it just for the video?

+Lifewithpets Really sorry to hear that. I hope you get it sorted out. I myself have never had that problem, but i reccon doing 10-20% water changes everyday and maybe adding some aquarium salt may help.

My amazon sword didnt grow much the first month i had it. Infact a few of the leaves died off. but after a month it started shooting up. Anyway i hope you sort out the problem before you have too many casualties. :)

+Jack smith Thanks for the heads up. I've found mine to be slow growing, but I suspect it's the very low light level. I have a Betta in the tank all the time. At the moment I haven't because we are dealing with columnaris out break. It's been really hard going, we've lost a lot of community fish. Some are on intensive treatment. It's the first time I've experienced anything like this in 20 years of fish keeping. It's been a sad few weeks. I will be doing a video on it soon
