I would recommend drops, or the conditioner stuff, because tap water and even bottled water has a bit of clorine which can harm a Betta Fish. Everyone learns! (:

+Randomyou101 you have to use a heater. Bettas live in southeast Asia and that place get up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more

No it won't

They're peasants that live in cold regions. We men live in the tropical heat. If you use a heater here the fish will overheat and die.

You do need a heater. They are tropical fish meaning they need heaters

Seriously dude u don't need to buy water from the pet store they have more chemicals in that then tap water
AmyAnimeWolf

As long as you get an water conditioner and other preparations are taken as in aging the water for days or hours it will be fine. :]
Sohil Parmar
Sohil Parmar - 11 years ago
drinking water and tap water both have chemicals harmful to fish, you HAVE to use conditioner unless you buy that special already conditioned water. you clearly have no idea what you are doing, do some research before you get a live animal
MrFish131
MrFish131 - 11 years ago
you actually don't need to let the water adjust to room temp for a betta, because they've just been in a plastic cup with no heater or filter all their lives.

good point on using the drinking water, but using water conditioner and tap water is much cheaper.

I did use a water heater and mine has been alive for a year now!
Naeruve
Naeruve - 11 years ago
It would be a very small amount of old tank water that goes in with him. You can get a large coffe mug or cup and gently scoop him up from the old water, and then pour him into the new one slowly, that way he's never airborne, there is no chance of him getting scratched by the net, and you're only putting about half a cup of old tank water into your new water. Best of luck :)

You dont always NEED a heater if the place your at is already warm. Plus you guys keep saying he needs water conditioner. Can't you see the bottle next to the tank ? He did use water conditoner !

Justin Hwang
Justin Hwang - 11 years ago
you should never pur the old fish water into the new tank... the bacteria and ammonia will go into the tank and effect the water
Naeruve
Naeruve - 11 years ago
Don't use a net if you can help it, if a lot of other people pour the betta in with his old water have you ever thought that maybe it's because it's the best and less stressful way of doing it? A net can rip their long flown fins, scratch their gills and skin, not to mention that moment when they are completely airborne. I know you're trying to care for your betta otherwise you'd have him in a bowl, so that's awesome! But please, do some more research into it beforehand, your betta will thank u!
Naeruve
Naeruve - 11 years ago
Umm, everyone has said it before me but you really don't know what you're doing. Drinking water is not a good idea, you NEED to use conditioner. If you don't want to then I guess the next best thing is those conditioned water jugs they sell at petco (very environmentally UN-friendly) A new tank has to go through a cycle process before you add fish to it otherwise your fish can get sick, badly sick.

Never use purified water. Always use tap water. Purified water takes away natural chemicals that help the fish's immune system develop. I've had my betta for 1 and a half years now, and he has done perfectly with tap water. Don't waste your money. :] Also, I'm curious as to what you named the little guy!

Reason why there so many people crying over smaller tanks because the smaller the tank faster amonia and waste products builds up in a smaller tank than a big one, and there are TONS of filters made for the big tanks.....If you are responsible enough to change the water on the smaller gallon tank more often than usual, then go for it man, if not faster chance ur betta will poison itself from its own filth....btw in tetra sells a 1-5 gallon water filters that works really great..

Yes you need a filter! Buy a thermometer for your tank, they are usually less than a buck, if the water temp is 75-80 its fine. If not, buy a heater.

@TheFreshwaterFish There's other things that need to be worked out other than just the chlorine. Read up on choloromines and other stuff in the water. People don't just let their water sit out anymore... that's old-school for a reason. But hey, whatever floats your boat, dude.
George Mullin
George Mullin - 12 years ago
i didn't float my beta cup in the water like you did here in this video- does that mean anything bad for the betas??? i got a total of 3 and i didn't let the cup sit in there. Inbox me if you wish and i might be able to describe it better.
Asianleful
Asianleful - 12 years ago
@xoxPandaLover104 It depends on how the water is where you live. I can let mine sit for a day or two and it's perfectly fine :D
Laura Holmes
Laura Holmes - 12 years ago
@Asianleful I wouldn't even agree with letting it sit. The chlorine in most tap water is DEADLY to fish. The conditioner is required to remove the chlorine and other harmful toxins that cant hurt us, but will hurt our fish! Letting the water sit wont make it free of all that stuff :P
Laura Holmes
Laura Holmes - 12 years ago
@miszshenelle Your joking, right? its better to have one than not having one. Keeps the water quality better for longer so not as may water changes are required and your betta stays healthy! :D
Laura Holmes
Laura Holmes - 12 years ago
Yeah like everyone HAS been saying, a heater would keep him healthier along with the plants :) also I was wondering, why don't you acclimate? the temperature is important, but so is the pH. He needs to adjust to your water slowly of his system may get shocked due to the rapid change (although bettas are pretty hardy). Really beautiful betta though. Wish i could find one like that at petsmart :P

Good!!!!!! Thats how betas should be kept not like those idiots out their that basically keep them in cups. and you do not need a heater if you have that light it will heat the tank enough. My beta is in a nicely planted vase that is under a lamp which keeps it at a pretty good temp.

Nice looking betta! Working on my tank now too. A 20g one lol. If everything goes well Id like to try breeding them. So I heard that using well water is much better than tap. I have access to very soft well water. Had one other question. I was looking on fish profiles dot com and it had some compatable community fish I could use. Just want to double check if Pleco and or Flying Fox are ok. Anyone have any problems with them?
