Is it okay for my betta fish to stay still all the time? I have a half moon and got it today
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
First Last I would not worry about it to much right now. It may take him up to a week or so to be comfortable in his new home. Also since he has big fins he will rest more because it is hard work having big fins to carry around. Just make sure the tank is a good temperature and is clean and he should be just fine!

my old betta flared on command easy. I first discovered it when i was writting something on a piece of paper and i would look over and there he was full flare at my pencil haha. ever since then he would flare at anything touching his "territory". He would also come easily to any part of the tank i was touching. i never did the jumping trick though i will have to try that with my new beta cause he is showing promise of learning quickly. My new betta is a Blue and red super delta betta. I am going to try and teach him to jump.

Whenever I am looking at my beta, mine always swims up to me and looks at me. He likes to sleep sometimes near the bamboo planet. on the ground, He always actives in the morning knowing he going to be fed. He also lets you know he hungry. He likes to look around my room. Whenever we turn off the light and turn his tank light on he sees himself and puff out his fins. Its really funny to watch him. he likes it when people come into the room and starts looking at him.

My female beta fish keep swimming away when my male beta fish keep coming near her is this normal
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
Red Rose Saturday Male and females bettas should not be housed together because they are territorial. The male, if given the chance, will likely kill the female. So yes this is normal because she knows the male will hurt her.

Well my betta fish Xenix is happy... but my betta fish Senpai seems not so much even though Senpai is in a 20 gallon with other fish and many decorations... I change the decor every few months... so.. I'm not sure what to do because he lays at the bottom of the tank a lot and he's not sick or anything and he eats normally and he's only about 1 year old :/ if you have any advice please tell me.
Selena Wolf
Selena Wolf - 7 years ago

Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
Selena Wolf Yes it is very possible that he is just lazy, keep an eye on him though to see if he gets any other signs that he is sick.
Selena Wolf
Selena Wolf - 7 years ago
True but I have made sure that the flow is low and he always stays at the other side of the tank where the flow is nothing it doesn't even blow the food around much and I have checked the ammonia and it's fine do you think he could just be a "lazy" betta?
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
If Senpai has larger fins the current in the tank may be to strong form him and blow him around the tank. This may be why he is resting all the time, because it is hard work swimming in currents in the water.

my male betta has 0ne fin missing....we think possibly a snail got it....he struggles sometimes to swim but still eats. however he cannot swim to the bottom of his 5 gal tank. bought some med to help heal any wounds and encourage fin growth. will he be ok and how long does it take for a New fin?
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
Patty Whitaker It depends on the fish and how much fun was missing. It can take a week to months. If the fin is to far gone though it may never grow back.

my lovely Dragon scale betta, Norbert is a bit lazy until I come over to see him... But he does swim a lot still on his own. My baby girl betta, Opal is kind of in a small tank at this moment as I'm in the process of moving and cannot get her a proper tank, but I don't think I see her sit still for more then five seconds XD

I got a little Betta recently, and we just put her in a bowl. I keep reading that Betta hate to be in bowls and all that, and I understand it, but there's genuinely no space for a tank for her. She seems very happy in her bowl though, super curious and active. We bought her a leaf and she loves to swim around it and she'll nose dive to the bottom every once in a while.
Are bowls really that harmful for my little girl?

Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
ThatWEIRDasianGirl They don't harm your fish they are just harder to keep clean bacause they are a smaller space. As long as your Betta is active and has room to swim around and stuff to look at and clean water he can be a very happy betta!

Your betta looks exactly like my betta, Axel. Well, red veiltail bettas are pretty common. When I went to get my betta, there were 5 red veiltails, but for some reason, one stood out for me, and that's now Axel. Some times it takes bettas a couple days to a week or more for them to get used to there new surroundings, he should come around in time. You can also try to do activities by the tank like drawing or just sitting by the tank so that he can get used to you being by him.

i put my tank on my computer desk. it gives me something to look at and my betta always has a different thing to look at when he stares at the screen. sometimes i'll put floating objects in his tank like pieces of the fake leafs that have broken off an old fake plant, he usually likes to poke at the floating leaves or i'll put a pingpong ball, he likes to chase it around as the light current takes it around the tank.

CrussoFang
CrussoFang - 7 years ago
Lps KatieKat okay also I looked it up and it sounds like your fish may have fin rot

Your fish turning black is a clear sign of it and it's often caused by poor water quality. Is your tank cycled? And when was the last time you did a water change?

My beta is a female velitial. She is the cutest thing. She always swims around during the day, trying to eat some of the rocks, then spits them out lol. She even sits at the bottom and doesn't move during the night, I know this because at midnight I checked on them and they were just laying at the bottom. But they are always active during the day. I have 3 betas. One is a velitail male named lapras(separate tank of course), and another crown tail female that hasn't been named yet, and a velitail female that I was talking about.

Sanarya Akaka If you can't get any make sure to change up the surroundings so your fish has something new to look at. You can either buy some cheep ones or get some free decorations by finding rocks and hard sticks out side and then boiling them twice to remove any harmful bugs, bacteria, etc.

I'm very new to owning betta fish, & I have had him one day, & all he has done is sit at the bottom of the tank. I am very concerned. Water quality is fine, what could I do to get him swimming ?
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
If you are using tap water you treated it with water conditioner to remove the chlorine and other harmful chemicals right? Also since you just got him then he may not be used to his new home yet, it will normally take betta fish a couple days to a week to get settled into there new home. Also make sure the water temperature is not too cold, above 72 should be good. If he is a betta with larger fins then he also might lay around a little more because it takes more work to lug around the large fins. I hope this is helpful! If you have any other questions feel free to ask, I am always willing to help!

I have had my new boy Shades for about a month now since my 4 and a half year old betta Joey died. He is probably one of the happiest bettas I've ever owned and becuase I love my fishie so much he has to have a 4.5 gallon tank. He is a veil tail and is aqua with a black head and every different shade of blue which explains his cute name. I also have a crowntail Bob who also has a 4.5 gallon tank who is also super happy my dad got him for me as a Christmas present and he is blue purple aqua goldish yellow and he is so beautiful but Shades tends to be more affectionate while bob is a show off but I love them both so very much and this comment was random af but if ur reading this have a nice day!

Your fish might be bored. Since I don't know if you have a filter or how big your tank is, I can't suggest a tank mate.

Boredom is one of MANY causes for biting. Fin nipping is caused by
stress. Stress comes in many forms.

High activity- when a fish is stressed by over activity of tank mates or
movement outside the tank(such as if the tank was frequently passed by)

Inactivity- when the fish gets bored. This is not always solved by adding more
fish, this is fixed by giving the fish more attention and a few toys.

Fright- when a fish is simply very scared or something similar to that emotion. New fish can nip for this reason often.

Hunger- kinda obvious, feed your Betta a variety of foods. One day, moist pellets, next day, freeze dried blood worms that you soaked and removed air bubbles from, next day brine shrimp.

Heavy fins- big fins create drag on the fish, they can give themselves
hair cuts.(any long fin can do this, it is more common in rose tails and
halfmoons)

Heavy flow- when the filter flow is too much for the fish to swim in they will trim their fins up for better control.

Itchy: This one may be your issue, it is a suck issue but it may
be yours. Regrowth of the fins seems to cause itching in some bettas,
their edges may burn or itch and the fish bites them. You said that your
tetras were nipping? The regrowth may have caused him to do this. There
is no real cure in this case aside from hoping he just stops and lets
them regrow.

Unknown- some fish just do it. Maybe it is neurotic but there have been cases with no cure.

The answer is simple to start with. First ID what problems could be
likely, then start trying the various fix's for them. Keep your water
clean, 50% water changes a week will not hurt the fish at all, nor will a
slime coat additive. This issue doesn't kill the fish, yours has gone
as far as he will probably go. keep it clean and warm.

To entertain a fish, get some new orniments, rearrange the current ones
and do switch outs and such. Get him some floating toys, a mirror and
so on.

I am a Betta breeder of 45 years. First thing is they need the water temp. at 80-84 at all times. You should keep cuprimine/copper in the water for velvet. Almond leaves are soothing to their bodies and helpful with raising fry. Now, Bettas come from soft/acidic waters. You can choose to regulate the ph/dh with chemicals, but be careful with switching them suddenly? Their diet is flakes/crisps,pellets, etc... in a good quality food. You need to supplement with freeze dried foods several times a week, ie... brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, tubifex worms, These can foul the water easily so plan on partial water changes at least twice weekly. Much more often if you are keeping them in a bowl, which is not good. The Bettas need at least a full gallon of water each and I keep them in 2 gallon tanks, with a heater. I do have Betta tanks with glass dividers for housing males, they limit the water volume. They like a Betta leaf/plastic near the surface to rest on. It's your choice about filters but, they cannot tolerate fast swirling waters. Sponge filters and small filters that stick on the sides of the tank are good. Never keep other Bettas with a male. Bettas are gentle to non- Bettas but will eat smaller fish. Females can be kept together in groups but they will bully smaller fish to death. Forget tiny bowls with cold water, it's a death sentence.

No need for air pumps for bettas, it's a waste. They have a special organ which allows them to breath the surface air. A gentle sponge filter that breaks the water surface provides a sufficient amount of aeration in the water :)

Mary Farmer Thanks, Mary. He is in a five gallon tank, so moving him is out of the question. I have him next to an electric fireplace but I can't leave it on all of the time. And it's been very cold so the house is cool and drafty no matter what. Maybe I will try the light... thanks for the suggestions! Anyway, he is eating fine and was blowing bubbles lots until today. I just checked Amazon and with some luck the heater will arrive before the weekend!
Mary Farmer
Mary Farmer - 7 years ago
He may survive without getting sick but that is too cold? If he is eating well that's a good sign? You can try putting a old type light bulb near the side of his bowl or set his bowl on top of the refrigerator or water heater? Be sure and check the temp. of the water every 15 minutes for an hour, then every 30 minutes for two more hours. I would hate for him to cook. He can live in water up to 86 f but a bit cooler would be best. The warmer the water the less oxygen in the water. I hope this helps?
Steven Harold Orr
Steven Harold Orr - 7 years ago
I feel terrible. I live in Canada, and it's bloody cold out. And our new beta is in water that is sitting at about 70 (the pet store clerk assured us that a heater was unnecessary). I live an hour and a half from the nearest pet store, so I ordered a heater on Amazon. But it likely won't be here until next week. Poor guy is staying pretty still. I hope he can hang in there until the heater arrives!
Mary Farmer
Mary Farmer - 7 years ago
I started using some plastic 2 gallon critter keepers and so far so good. they don't soak up meds and they take awhile to soil. I have 25 watt heaters and air on eac h. I have so many high dollar breeders that I needed extra quarters to keep them from fighting. I mean the females, seriously they will shred each other. I am buying breeding stock off ebay right now and have some show stoppers. My bank account is fatally wounded though..lol, I also have betta tanks with dividers and 10 gallons for breeding and rearing fry. I have a feeling my 30 gallon will have a hoard of females living there.

Oscar Gonzalez no kidding? You go to Walmart and it's like little bowls less than a gallon. Like here's a tank for your office! Easy to use! Watch your beta be happy blah blah while some little kid is shaking the fuck outta all the betas in that aisle. Needless to say, never buy fish from Walmart, or those shitty plastic tanks. If you're serious about owning a beta, no less than a 3 gallon tank, little filter, add some bubbles, and a heater. Oh yeah beta gonna be living like king ^-^
Oscar Gonzalez
Oscar Gonzalez - 7 years ago
Yes your absolutely right Ethan Bates I also experience the same thing. The lower the temperature the lower their metabolism slows. The sad part is that this is basic information that pet stores should inform people who buy them. I personally did not know.
Ethan Battles
Ethan Battles - 7 years ago
Mary Farmer you are so right, first thing above all I've seen people do is have a tank for a beta and have no heater for it. I bought a beta fish a few ago and made him a nice 5 gallon home all to his self but I forgot to buy another heater. So I waited a week till next paycheck and he wasn't hardly moving at all. Today I just got that heater and not even an hour of it being on. He's swimming everywhere. Everyone no joke, a few degrees can hurt your fish.

Oscar, I think the ghost shrimp are fairly safe but, I'm not a frog person and just don't know? I would not put them with my fish without research? Never know what problems can tag along with them? I have seen them in shops but never trust something with a mouth big enough to eat your fish.
Oscar Gonzalez
Oscar Gonzalez - 8 years ago
Mary Farmer, thank you for your valuable information. although I do have a question, would it be a safe to introduce ghost shrimp and African frog to my Betta? I have them in a 30 gallon tank with neon tetra fish.
Mary Farmer
Mary Farmer - 8 years ago
Sorry, I left off live foods. I can't scroll or edit with this laptop?? Okay, brine shrimp in frozen or live form are the best food. I don't feed live worms due to the possibility of parasites tagging along. Live daphnia are great and frozen too. Some people feed live baby guppies and mosquito larvae. Research before you feed live foods.

My beta will sit in the water head to the top of the tank and when you nudge the tank he moves and he does do this from time to time and he is always hiding and he is always just sitting in his skull hut. Is he sick is he depressed happy or just lazy is this normal behavior for som beta plz let me know I only have a foot by foot by foot tank with colorful rocks shells a hut and fake plant and I move them around. I have toy cars outside of the tank. Is this caused by the food or the water which I buy from the store or is it the vibration of the filter or the bubbles up top he one time got hit by multiple bubble jets from pressure build did this injure him or what plz help me I want to keep my fish healthy and happy
shifterkart1
shifterkart1 - 7 years ago
The water in his tank is probably too cold. If you don't already have a heater, get one and set the temp to around 78-82 degree. Also, get a mirror and put it against the tank to see if your fish will flare or not..... some betta are chicken and would rather hide than flare, but if they don't do anything, it's probably because they are sick or the water is too cold.

Kraftykittez sometimes betta do that because of age...also they do it cause it's pretty common for them to do. My friend has a betta named buddy and he used to be dark blue but him and I noticed that he has started to turn light blue. Also, if he as any spots, I would recommend earthier taking him to a good fish store and ask if their is something wrong with him or if you can't do that, I would get a product called ICH. This is when a fish has spots on him or starts rubbing up against stuff beacause he is really itchy. And make sure when you get done cleaning out his tank, put some water conditioner in there. Usually at any fish store, asked them fore some water conditioner for a betta

Got2LoveFish you were on the right track. you were right in that it shouldn't be sitting all the time. usually consistent sitting indicates shitty water quality (high ammonia, nitrites) or possible disease. at OPs mention of a bowl I immediately knew it's the water conditions. you should have a filter for your betta in the very least, and a heater if your room temperature is cold where you live.

They are probably board and have nothing to do in there tank that is exciting to them. Try putting new objects around there tank or get a larger tank so they have more room to explore.

My betta quite often will swim in one direction in small little bursts. like he will swim forward, stop, swim forward, stop, swim forward, stop in rapid succession. Is this normal? he's not swimming against anything so not sure if there's a parasite problem.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 8 years ago
If he has large fins then, yes this is normal, because it takes more energy for them to swim distances so they do it quickly then rest.

Ok this may be a stupid question but I feel like your a expert. Sooooo is ok to raise my beta fish in a bowl. Well mine is raised in a very large pitcher. I know wow really but idk if they will be happy living in this space. My beta fish (lavender) has been swimming around. She seems to be happy but I'm afraid when she gets bigger she won't like her home. She also has a tiki statue that she rarely goes in and idk if I should take it out or not.... It is not typically harmful to the fish it just is not as aesthetically pleasing. But make sure to keep up on weekly water changes and cleaning the gravel to keep the foginess down and make sure the water is good for your fish.

My betta fish, Flame, recently passed away. I think he was sick somehow because he was ALWAYS resting and never swimming around. I fed him and cleaned his tank and all that stuff but he still died.
Today I got a new betta, a crown tail, named Thunder. He is blue and red and very beautiful! I love him so much! I put him in the tank after he got used to the water temp and all that and when I put him in, he was swimming around and looking at everything around him. I fed him and he came right up to my finger and ate his food. I can tell that he is a very friendly and happy fish!!! :D

My sister left her betta fish with me for a few months, recently I just noticed he stays at the bottom of the tank a lot and I freaked out because I thought he passed. I searched up things, but I can't seem to find the right reasons, I don't know if I overfed it or maybe because we bought him new conditioner for the water? Today I changed the tank because I thought he was getting bored, hopefully that does it. I'm planning to buy him new decorations too and a heater (he doesnt have one.) Overall, he's been living for a year, and this is the first time he's done this. I really hope he doesnt die. Does anyone know the reasoning for his behaviours?

Thanks for the advice. Sadly she died so I have not a clue what was wrong... I did research everything back when she was alive but I came home on Friday and she was all bone. So I did have to clean out the tank. I might get a new one soon. She ended up living for a few months.
origamicrocus
origamicrocus - 8 years ago
+Madi Bendy Look up betta diseases online like fin rot and ich. If the pictures match, try finding special water conditioners to treat it. You will have to quarantine the betta in its own tank to do this, though. Also, make sure you are not overfeeding it. If it seems bloated, try giving her part of a boiled and skinned pea.

Heres an idea get a fluval spec 2 or better yet a 5 gallon tank because everythings already there like the built in filter and lighting and the thing just looks beautiful, then throw some live plants in that you can find at any big pet store i promise and your tank wont look tacky with a bunch of fake plants in it the water will stay cleaner from the plants as well and all around youll just have a better looking place that your betta will love

THANK YOU! I've been really worried about my betta for a few days. I recently changed up his tank a lot, and got another betta. (They are in separate tanks, where they can't see eachother) and he's been really active and such, and acting unlike himself. I had a background on the tank that he was flaring at, so I removed it. He seems better, but his fins are more out instead of close to his body. Is that a good thing? Does this mean he's stressed or does this mean he's happier?
Pony Painter
Pony Painter - 8 years ago
+Got2LoveFish wow thank you so much for replying! At first I thought he was stressed out, but as the days progressed I felt that it might have been he is happier. So thank you for letting me know for sure! I just love the little guy and wanted to make sure he is okay. Thanks again!
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 8 years ago
+Pony Painter It seems to me that he is actually happier. You don't want their fins to be close to their body all the time. The water change probably just felt great for the betta, I know some fish just get so excited and more active after water changes which is good.

Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 8 years ago
Betta fish that tend to have longer fins tend to rest more because it is difficult to carry around all of that extra weight. As long as he is still active and curious when he is swimming around and he is still eating, I would not be to worried. If you just got him then he may have been more explorative of his new surroundings and then just felt comfortable to rest more often now.
Kristine Klaussen

there are a bunch more little amenities, that betta will much appreaciate. most will be a given in a slightly overgrown tank, which is also closest to theyr natural habitat.
-resting spots below the surface: they seem to prefer ones with a little current near the filter outlet.
-gaps, nooks and crannies: for some reason betta like to squeeze though small spaces.
-turning on a bubbler every now and then.
-varied food! pellets are sufficient, but boring. offer different treats like dried shrimp, frozen food, and life food (only tiny snack amounts of those, so the fishies dont get fat). my 3 girls love hunting life water flea. i feel kinda sorry for the little buggers, but they are super easy to breed with green water.
if you have moss in your tank, let some soaked food fall onto it, the betta will be busy for a while to find it all.
WhiteKoneko
WhiteKoneko - 8 years ago

Before you go forth with anything having to do with breeding bettas I highly recommend to watch a lot of different betta breeding videos on YouTube as well as read blog posts and such through out the internet. I will answer any questions you have but it is a very big process to breed bettas so research is key in order to do it correctly.

Got2LoveFish - 8 years ago
So if that is true, in this video I am saying ways that you can make your fish the least stressed. The less stressed a fish is the longer they live and the more comfortable they are in the tank so the more they will be out in the open. This feeling is known as happiness to us.
Friendly Spiders
Friendly Spiders - 8 years ago
+Got2LoveFish they are natural reactions for when they where in the wild, so they don't die. They don't ave the brain to have much, MUCH, personality, or feelings, but they all differ in ways, but they can't change too much from how to react in the wild. So answer, they are reactions, not feelings.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 8 years ago
+Friendly Spiders Can you tell when a fish is scared? When it runs away and hides? That is a feeling. What about when he is angry, he will chase and bite other fish. What about contentment, the fish will be out exploring, and with schooling fish they will not school as close. What about desperation when the fish is out of water flopping around to try and get back to water. There are so many more feelings of fish.If these are not feelings, then what are they?

I just got my first betta fish yesterday and I bought a 2 gal tank. At the moment there is only 2 fake branches with leaves on them, how many things should I put in the tank? He has been sitting on the bottom a lot. Also if I am using the flakes to feed him how much should I give him?
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 8 years ago
First, what type of fish is he? Make sure that the water is not to cold, it should be between 72 and 82F. Another thing to make sure of is that the water is clean and that water changes are done at least once a week. You can also add 1/2 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon to the tank, this will add electrolytes, and other essential micro molecules to the tank which may help him be more active.
Matt Cascini
Matt Cascini - 8 years ago
+Got2LoveFish so my fish for some reason just kinda like lays against the rock in his tank and sometimes on his side. When I see him do it I just put the net in the water and he starts moving around but I feel like this isn't normal... Matt Cascini
Matt Cascini - 8 years ago
Thanks for the help :)
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 8 years ago
+Matt Cascini For the décor you should add enough so that he has hiding places but not too many that there is not a larger area for him to swim freely. For food over feeding is more likely than under feeding, it is easier to gage how much food he eat with pellets. With flakes just do a pinch of food a day, it should not take him more than a couple minutes to eat it.

nice video. great. I have bought several male bettas for a scientific project on longevity. they have their own tanks, 15-20 gallons, monitored water conditions, filtration, daily water changes of 10-20%. they have "play" time. when I got them, they looked not well at all. after one week, they changed completely: some syarted to make bubble nests, my queen piece betta started flaring at the fancy goldfishes in the other tank, he is very active, he is a hunter and a fighter type. Did tou know that in a previous experiment some male bettas were still alive after nine, yes: 9 yrs ! (nobody knew their age at te of purchase, so they might be older than nine years ....

Hey! First of all thanks for uploading this video! I got a betta male yesterday. He is in a fish bowl of about 0.5 gallons. I can't get a bigger tank. He has not been that active and rests at the bottom mostly. I have put a plant inside and keep shifting places. Also, how many pellets should I give him at once ? The pet shop owner told me to give him 10-12 pellets in the morning and 10-12 in the evening. He isn't eating all the pellets as well. Please tell me if that's the right amount and what should I do to make him more happy?

animal lover - 9 years ago
+Abhishek Rawat I would give him flake betta food if he is not eating pellets well so you should only give him a very small pinch of the flake food because they do not eat a lot. I think the tank you have is fine mine is the same size and if you want to keep him interested change his acceseries often.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago

Abhishek Rawat
Abhishek Rawat - 9 years ago
+Got2LoveFish Thank you so much for the reply! :)
My betta seems to be enjoying day by day! I have put a couple of more things inside the bowl. Also, do you think keeping a mirror will be a good option. Since I showed him mirror once, he has been more active and flaring a lot! do you think its healthy for him to do so?
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
+Abhishek Rawat That is definitely way to many pellets, he only needs 3 to 4 pellets a day that is why he is not eating all of them, over feeding is more likely than under feeding. He would probably be more happy and active if you do get him a bigger tank so he has more room to explore. You could also, like said in the video, have different things outside the tank for him to look at, or see if he will follow your finger. When I got my first betta I would color pictures and do homework in font of his tank, he seemed to enjoy watching me or just having something moving to look at.

My red betta is always active. It hasn't been making bubbles. I put rocks at the bottom of the vase. Plants and bamboo. She recognizes me. I break down the fish pellets into tiny pieces to feed her. My betta loves YouTube videos, he has a favorite even, I get very funny looks when I tell ppl this, but it's true. He likes the video with Yellow Tang fish the best. I found it under aquarium videos for cats. I watched him and he doesn't seem to get overly worked up, but when I put it on I keep the tank lights up or it reflects on the back of the tank and he does see fish in front of him and behind him and he does get a little anxious appearing then. I swear he seems healthier, but not being an expert in fish health I couldn't say exactly why I get that impression. I am working on getting him to jump, he already comes to me, he did from the beginning tho. He is definitely the smartest betta I have ever had.

Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
+zor` `ak (The reptile king dragon) Some bettas, in very rare cases, like smaller tanks. Another idea though is that he felt more comfortable in the larger tank so he did not feel like he needed to surveys his territory. In a smaller tank, with a smaller territory it would be easier for another fish to come and take it from him. That or if the 5.5 had a filter and the .7 did not he may have been tied from swimming against the current all the time.

ok and i diddent mean the bacteria makes them territorial i ment the extra room  but yeah i do need to upgrade the tank size anyway because only one person said that and everyone else says they need more room
CleverRight
CleverRight - 8 years ago
+little wolf35 What? No it doesn't. It's better for them to have a larger tank. The tank first has to go through the nitrogen cycle which will create good bacteria. The bacteria will not make them more territorial. In a 5g you shouldn't have any other fish with it. At least with a 5g you can get a heater and filter to help your betta fish live a longer and healthier life
little wolf35
little wolf35 - 8 years ago
yeas  so i was going to upgrade his tank but then someone said it invites to much bad bacteria and makes the betta territorial
CleverRight
CleverRight - 8 years ago
+little wolf35 You'll probably need to upgrade to at least a 2.5g or 5g tank. Also the water in the tank might be too cold which is why he is not moving as well as not having too much space to move.

Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
It would be good to get a bigger tank but if you can't then make sure to try and change around the decor in the tank and the things that are around every so often so the betta doesn't get board as easily. You can also entertain him by "playing" with him, like moving your hand and fingers or even different toys or whatever around the tank and see what he reacts to, and just have fun with having him.

+Desiray Duncan I think that this behavior is just that your betta is getting older so he is more lethargic and is not as active. I would not worry to much because he is getting older. One thing you could do if you are not doing it already is adding aquarium salt or Epsom salt to the water (1/2 teaspoon per gallon) just to help with the overall health of the fish as he gets older. And you are fine to comment on any of my videos, I don't care old or new.

Jasmine Watts
Jasmine Watts - 9 years ago
+Got2LoveFish Agreed. When my male betta Norman was in a smaller tank, there were always lots and lots of bubble nests. He's happily been in his 5 gallon tank for a while now and I rarely ever see bubbles.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
Building a bubble nest could be something bettas do when they have nothing else to do. In my experience when my betta was in a small bowl he built a bubble nest once a month. I then moved the same betta into a larger tank (were he has more to do) and he only built a bubble nest maybe 3 times a year. That is just my experience.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
+Etta Wing Just because they are healthy does not mean they are happy. Also bubbles don't mean much, he actually may be making more bubble nests because he is board and has nothing better to do.

Goldfish can grow to ten inches meaning they need a forty gallon tank per fish if u keep them in bowls their body will attempt to stay an adaquet size but really their spine is twisting around to keep the fish the same size but this compresses their organs eventuallykilling them. If u want to know how this feels then go to the refrigerator and over eat, the pressure u feel in your abdomen is how the organ compressed fish feels everywhere.

+Doll Whisperer I would get a betta fist because they do not get huge like goldfish can. A betta should have at least a 2.5 gallon tank and a heater and filter is preferred. You can decorate the tank with whatever you would like but it is best to do silk plants so that the betta's fins to not get torn on sharp edges. The tank should be cleaned once a week about 25% with a siphon hose to get the debris out of the gravel. The betta should be fed 4 pellets daily. As for picking out the betta, just get one that you feel drawn too, don't get one that wont swim around very much or one that sits at the bottom or top all the time. Basically make sure the betta you get is pretty active, for how active they can be in the containers they are sold in. I know this is a lot of information, feel free to ask more questions I really enjoy helping.

My two betta fish are in the same tank but have a divider and they know they're next to each other and all they want to do is fight ! Please help. !
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
+Armin Kopic They still want to fight because they can see each other. The best thing to do is have them in separate tanks with something in-between them so they can not see each other or a divider that they can not see each other through, there is really no other way to stop them from wanting to fight.

This was very helpful thank you, my Rose is such a happy boy, he loves swimming to me and loves following what I do for instance if I shake my head repeatedly he will do the same (: and if I call him or talk to him in a high pitch tone he knows it's me and will come out to the front of his tank and look for me. He recently made his first bubble nest which I was so very excited but it soon fell apart so I finally had to clean his 10 gallon tank. I also have bought a new Betta named Current, he's long flowing bluish green so he reminds me of a water current, and he made his first nest too, when I cleaned his tank however he remade his which is cute and I believe him to be older than Rose due to current being twice the size of Rose and he rests a bit more, I bought him a leaf hammock so he didn't have to rest on the pebbles, he is only in a gallon tank for right now because my goldfish tank has gotten a huge attack of Ick unfortunately and all but one has died, the one has ick again after treating him so I'll most likely scrub down the 15 gallon tank and put current in their after a while if my Jasper doesn't pull through.

Just be careful with things outside of the tank. I had Goldfish that I bought a "wallpaper" for for their tank and they thought it was more plants and would spend hours swimming into the glass trying to get through the "plants". I ended up having to remove it because they were getting sores on their mouths from hitting the glass so hard :(

+FatPot G they were originally bred as pets. The Japanese/Chinese spent generations and generations breeding different species of carp to get the goldfish but unfortunately they become so popular and so common that nobody cares about them anymorw

+SilverZapper nitrite is a silent killer, I made a mistake this summer to put too many goldfish together in a pot pond with a cooler (it was too hot for the goldfish). Days went by without problems, but then the little fish went sick and the bigger ones seemed alright. After a water test i noticed that nitrite went to the roof, just removed the big guys to their tank and the little ones to a hospital tank. They survived and i learned my lesson.

I attempted to keep one believing the myth that they were easy to take care of. It unfortunately died of nitrite poisoning and I learned they are one of the most difficult fish you could buy.

+Blair Waldorf Hey, any filter will work one with an adjustable nozzle will be best, a heater set to 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, live plants are easy, when you do 100% water changes you can take out the plant and put them in a bucket, stir up your substrate as well, cleaning the sides take paper towel and wipe it, keep it natural, sand is my preference my bettas can lay down without laying on rocks that may hurt, just take tube and suck the poop and food off the surface of the sand, and no food and poop does not get into the sand it lays on top so its easy to clean stir it up every week and turn off your filter, when feeding your fish put food in the cap and soak it in water, swim bladder will kill your fish from going up and swallowing air, i hope this helped, have fun with ur betta!

+Blair Waldorf Heres a helpful tip, they sell betta water and betta conditioner, so  bettas don't really need filters

I have a question, I have a female betta and I find that she clamps her fins off and on when she swims and rests. But as soon as a go up to the tank her fins unclamps and she seems really happy. Is this something I should be concerned about and if so what can I do to help her?
I have her in 6 gallon tank and no other fish (she killed them her last tank mates). I've only had her for about month.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
+Tamara Hobson It seems as though she may be board. Change around the decorations every once in a while and put different objects outside of the tank to grab her attention. Basically change what is going on around her every once in a while and she will probably be more curious. This also sounds as though it may be normal. When fish swim they use their fins to move forward, slow, stop, etc. and the different ways they move their fins influences their movements.

+Picafish88 Does she come up to the glass and try to "swim though it" if so she is probably excited to see you. Bettas can remember who their owner is and recognize them.
