Sponge filters are a must in a cichlids tank! In conjunction with good filtration. Sponge give oxygen exchange with surface adjutatioin plus mechanical and biological FILTRATION

Jay is correct a sump, any sump but the #1 Sump would be a Fluidized filtered Sump, Followed by a Shower style Sump, There Many sumps that do NOT exchange as well as a high Powered Canister filter with proper water distribution. Stagnant style sumps (there are a lot of them on Youtube as a matter of fact) do not do a great job of this. one of the things with the new LED lighting I hate is this shimmering effect, one of the reasons I disperse the water the way I do in my tanks, so surface agitation is not my friend.

I use a sponge filter in every tank. With the added surface area for beneficial bacteria, the added circulation and the added agitation as well as the surface tension breaking from the bubbles it was an easy decision. But I recently found out they can truly be a life saver. I lost power for a while and the ability to provide all of the above with a batter operated pump, it became an essential component to every single tank I have.
