My betta lives in a 4gal tank, he used to live with others however they were moved because he would always hide either behind his heater or filter, his problem was that he was not at all aggressive and the others took advantage of him--he has the tank all to himself now though :)

Is it possible to try and get one male Betta and one female? I know it's possible for them to fight. So my plan was to lower the water a bitch, put the female betta in a glass where she can be introduced to my current male betta.

Or am I better of just trying to get some bottom feeder fish like suggested in this video plus a snail. and doing the same thing. My preferred setup would be 1 male, 1 female, plus a snail or two. But looking for info before I start looking for other fish for the tank. The tank is 10 gallon. Has filter, heater, 2 moss balls and an almond leaf.

The pet store would be willing to return the fish if they don't work out, So if they start fighting I would separate and return.

As for them mating, that wouldn't necessarily be something I'm trying to get them to do, but if it came up would be interested in trying to accomplish it. I have room and money to get spare tanks if needed in the future. My pet store would also accept the babies, it's not a chain store, but a privately owned store.

When people talk about what to feed certain fish, I'm left thinking; how do I feed a fish it's individual diet in a community tank? I.e. how do I ensure the pellets etc. get to my Betta and not get snapped up by other fish first?

My local fish store buys and sells gently used 2.5-5 gallon tank set ups (heater, filter, light and lid included) which they keep right next to their bettas for around $25-30 and they specifically do not sell fish bowls so that customers are more inclined to buy proper set ups for their bettas. This way, if a brand new fish owner wants to keep a betta in a tiny bowl or cup, they'd atleast have go through the hassle of stopping at another store which prevents a lot of the impulse buys that sell a lot of betta fish.

I'm about 99% sure my betta fish has velvet. I was stupid and didn't do a whole lot of research on diseases betta fish can get besides fin rot, so I didn't realize anything was wrong with him when I bought him. I'm going to set up a separate tank for him, and start treating it. Since I'm really new to taking care of fish I could really use some advice on what to do, please.

I like to spoil my pets so I get them best thing I can afford. So far, I pretty much have everything you recommended. Had my betta for almost a year now and he is very lively and happy in his 2.5 gal tank. I live in Arizona so the temp in betta's tank is usually around 78 degrees. But winter is coming and I need a water heater. I don't want to boil my fish so is there a good heater you recommend?

I've had my Betta for about 5 months now, hes the best fish I have ever gotten, I got my other bettas before from a chain pet store, and had no luck with them lasting more than a month, I got my current one from a different non-chain store. My betta seems very calm, happy. I changed his water just now, I had to use tap without a conditioner because I wasn't able to get my conditioner at the store, and his water was getting low. Anyways, my betta is very calm, I have a 5 gallon tank, and I was wondering if it would be okay to get a small cheapish fish, just to see how he reacts, is that a good idea or not? Thanks!

I just washed a 3.5 gallon bowl with salt, apple cider vinegar, and hot water. Scrubbed real hard and soaked it. Could I use this as a temporary home for my Betta right now? I have a small heater I can put it in too. I still worry about the temp in my home. I have Betta conditioner and a thermometer too!

I am currently cycling my brand new tank and was told that in about 2 weeks it should be ok for my Betta. So I really don't want to keep it in that small cup for 2 weeks. Hence why I am thinking of leaving him in the bowl I cleaned till then.

He does not eat any food and is hiding in his little plant and decorations. He also is less active and just not showing himself to time as he did only four days ago. I did do my first water change today and forgot to acclimate him before adding since the water was a little hot. I was worried he was to stressed and that he might have ich. Thank you so much for all your well delivered information! I have learned so much from you! My parents had this stupid 1 gal bowl that they have always kept a Betta in and I have convinced them to at least take out their plastic plant and got him a java fern and a leaf to sit on. Even after a few hours he seems happier. I have educated them about how to clean the bowl to keep the bacteria that is in there from dying every time she did a water change since they don't have a filter for him but she does 90% water changes so I don't think the ammonia build up will be too much. It's more work but I'm glad if they are going to keep a fish it will be as happy as possible. This is "tanks" to you! Thank you for all you do!

I know this is a really old video, but I’ve got a betta question. I new to the aquarium hobby,2-3 months) I’ve got a 5.5 gallon with one female. I went to Petsmart yesterday and purchased and female because the other female looked kinda lonely. Well all was great for about 10 minuets and they started fighting. I let this go on for maybe 30 minuets figured they were just working out who was the dominant female. I took the new betta out and contemplating returning her because I have another betta tank but it’s for a male. Long story short is there anything I can do to make these 2 crazy ladies get along?

So I really would like a betta fish and I saw this really cool looking cylinder tank that grows a plant from the top. It also says that the plant will help the tank so a filter is not needed but the more I research the more I see that circular tanks are bad. I also wanted to but a bottom feeder catfish that do not have very bright colors with the betta to help maintain the cleanliness a bit but the tank size I would like is a 3.5 gallon and now im not sure if that is a good idea and to just stick with the one betta. Just to make sure: Is the cylinder tank a yay or a nay? and is the plant a yay or a nay?

Someone help! About 2 months ago I got a betta fish and it was doing fine but after about a week it stopped eating and swimming around and I found it dead the next morning. I thought it was because I didn't have a heater and my house was kind of cold. So I got a heater and a new fish. And the same thing happened. Had it for a week and it stopped eating and swimming and died. So I upgraded to a 5 and 1/2 gallon tank, got plants and a cave, along with the heater and got my third fish. The guy at the pet store said I didn't cycle my tank so I did before I put my new fish in. I got her on Wednesday and yesterday (Tuesday) I noticed she wasn't eating her food. So I thought it was because of the kind of dirty water. So I did a about a 80% water change. I also had set some water in a bucket aside prior so it had a chance to grow some good bacteria. So I had about 1 gallon of the old water and like 1 gallon of the water that was sitting out and the rest new water. I conditioned it and everything. Btw I didn't scrub the sides of the tank or the plants so there would be some good bacteria left. So after I cleaned the tank I acclimated her for about 40 minutes and let her in she was swimming around and stuff but still wouldn't eat. Today (Wednesday, exactly a week from when I got her) she just sits on her betta hammock leaf and doesn't eat. ALL DAY! I'm scared she is going to die tomorrow please someone tell me what I'm doing wrong. This pattern keeps repeating itself with my fish. She hasn't eaten in almost 3 days. HELP!

what kind of tank do you have? What kind of filter do you have?

I want a tank that wont leak or is cheaply made

I would like to get a filter that wont suck him up and kill him

I was surprised with a betta fish last night as a birthday present.

As happy as I am to have a new pet, there so much responsibility that goes into it.

Since he/she is in my care I want to give him a long lasting/ comfortable as possible life.

Please respond as soon as possible.

I have looked at plenty of online kits, but some leak others fish get stuck in filters :'(

I'm willing to pay for everything separately

I have a 2.2 gallon tank and a rose petal betta ( male ) and I want a shriml ( ghost shrimp to be specific ) to clean the food he doesn’t find, but I’m not sure how he will react I’m afraid the shrimp will attack and kill him or the other way around. I feel like he would be fine but I don’t know if he is protective or not he is kinda shy with sudden movements and a bit slow to get to his meal. This is why I feel it could go well but the shrimp light be different and might think my betta is a problem or even tastey

You actually are pronouncing Beta the correct way in American English. UK English it is pronounced beeta. So your critics are totally wrong in every way.

The woman at PetSmart said that it's good to feed a betta every other day, but then I looked it up and other people say to feed a betta once or twice a day, but that's too much of a difference because I don't want to overfeed. Ahhh! I don't want my fish to be hungry, but I don't want him to be overfed.

Thanks so much for this video. I have watched it 3 times now. I brought home my new best friend yesterday, a male Halfmoon Betta named Pig! I got him a 3.5GL tank and all the trimmings you outlined here. I was going to get a heater but was told at the pet store that I don’t need one. I’m keeping on top of the temperature with my thermometer right now and it hasn’t fluctuated that much at all. My gut is still telling to get a heater though so I’m going to look into it. I want Pig to have a long healthy life. Seriously a great video, Pig and I thank you!!

Lily G
Lily G - 6 years ago
Alex Tchieng Cycling is the process where you slowly build up beneficial bacteria in your aquarium. Basically, the nitrate and nitrite cycle, where you can add helpful bacteria, keep the filter running, and make a good habitat for your fish. The fishless cycle takes up to one and a half months to complete. That's right, you don't just get the aquarium and put the fish in it...

I’ve had my betta for a little over a year now and he’s doing great. I don’t have a heater for him but his tank still stays around 80° (sometimes drops to 76° during the winter) so he should be fine. I think. Also I don’t leave my filter on while I’m in my room cause the one I have is so loud and it irritates me but I try my best to remember to turn it on when I’m at school or just not at home. I do water changes pretty often too so he should be fine. I think. Idk what the point of me commenting this is but I guess you can tell me if I should be doing something differently cause I want my little guy to live the best/longest life he can

Lily G

Periwinkle 20 gallon tanks for one is what I'd recommend, I don't think you need gravel unless you want them, and you need a pretty good filter cause they are very dirty fish, also their food should sink. I'm not an expert on them so I'd check out solidgoldaquatics for more information

When I was like 5 I had 2 betta fish. They were both boys so we bought a tank with divider but I think the tank was only like 1 gallon and it was divided by 2. My mom would put them in separate cups. Now I feel bad. There was also nothing but a tank and rocks. there was no filter or any thing to clean the water or a vacuum to clean it. I feel really bad. *** IMPORTANT** I saw a video where you needed aquarium bacteria. Do I need it? Also where do I buy it? I don't want to put any bacteria and I don't want to kill them. It's been 8 years and I want betta fish. I plan on buying a 10 gal. tank with hopefully 3 females because I heard you shouldn't do 2. and my sister is giving me hers. I feel so bad for it though. she says its okay but its in a small tank but she has a heater for him. I think I'll put 1 boy in a 3 gal. tank so he'll be happy. I also wanted to breed but realized that they can have like 100 babies and I can't buy 100 tanks and they won't be happy with no room. Please help me with the bacteria. I'm excited to own fish again :)

I'm curious whether or not I'm over doing it. My Beta fish is in a 5 gallon glass rectangular tank. He has a medium sized rock structure. I dont do plastic. Acrylic is my friend. And he has a bubble wall in the back, that can light up, but between that light, on top of the light at the top, and a medium heater? His water gets too hot. I keep his temperature between 72 And 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Usually 78.4 F. And I turn off his bubble lights when it gets too hot. Pop in a couple ice cubes when it gets too hot. All his decorations get scalded before put into the tank. I get him only blue aesthetic backgrounds and pebbles. The color RED is a no! Stressed them out. I do betta water conditioner, water dechlorinater, stress zyme, stress coat, ammonia remover, water clarifyer, bacteria supplement, and aquarium salt. He has a moss ball and a snail buddy. A fake acrylic plant, and a fake anemone, and a acrylic leaf hammock, you pretty much stuck a leaf lead to the side, and they lay on it. I feed him 2 pellets at 10:30 on the dot. Not only does he have a "in the water" thermometer, he has one on the glass too. His heater glows red when it need a to be warmer, and green when it's good. My net, cArrier tank, water pump, pack of cartidges for the filter, and my net and holder cups for water changes. All my stuff together costed roughly 200$ because I was extra though. Taylor, or anyone else here, do you think I'm doing a good job with my betta?

The pet store told me, the betta wouldn't see the shrimo, because they're clear
Bratney Kairi

I also had two shrimp, I tried putting in the tank with the betta, my betta killed one, so I quickly removed my shrimp and put him in a separate tank. Right now he's in a critter tote, treated as a tank, until I get an actual filter one

i have 1 week experience with fish .. so i just kinda didn't know betta fish were territorial .. so i bought 10gallon betta fish tank for him and for some other fish.. and i got 3 betta females.. they get along great.. only the male chases them 24/7 but they get to rest most of the time.. but atleast i know my betta is happy because he is very active.. and he doesn't hurt other fish , but i think one of the females bit his tale because one morning i found a big junk of his tail missing.. or it was a decoration.. ehh he kinda deserved it for harassing the females , but im still kinda confused what had happened to him..

I was just at a small festival and there was a stand with gold fish and you throw a ping pong ball into a cup with the fish IN IT there was food coloring in the water I had a ten gallon tank at home and always wanted a gold fish so I won 2 fish one of them was in green water so I wanted to get him out of the green water and my friend had clean water so I got him in there and an hour later he was dead so I go up to the stand and say my fish is dead and they say I'm not going to get you a new one if you put it in different water so my friends came up with a plan to put the dead fish in a bag and pretend their fish died so they went up to the stand and the lady said oh sh*t took a puff of her cigarette and threw the dead fish in the grass and picked up a fish with her bare hands and threw it in some water then gave it to my friend after that there was a person who was yelling free fish so being me I took it and got it out of the purple water it was in and took the three of them home they seem much happier and tomorrow I am getting them a filter and plants.(the names are Timmy Skyler and vegetable

Bettas are literally the bomb. honestly my favorite fish of all time. I had a fifteen gallon a few years ago and everyone always tells you like "hey don't keep them together they'll kill each other" but i had 4 males  and 4 females together and they swam together like a school and didn't even fight. the only time they ever fought was when i introduced different fish, like an angel fish... ended up taking her back but they don't all fight each other. Anyways, I always used a whisper filter for my babies, its a naturally low flow and like the name hints, its sooooo quiet. A really good thing to do is keep a liter of water and mix it with aquarium salt, water conditioner, API Stress Coat, and Melaflex for every water change. I usually just put it near the filter so it could go through the whole tank. anyways, thats just my 2 cents.  :)

There is a Lilly plant in my tank and he goes over to it and lays on the leaves and doesn't go anywhere else. My tank is alwayd at 75° F, is it possible that he is sick or something cause he never leaves that spot unless it's breakfast time when he leaves for like 40 seconds then goes back.

l'eau
l'eau - 6 years ago
Wiinter Wolf Actually that's about average. Smaller tanks are often more expensive than bigger tanks because they don't sell as well but cost a lot to make. 3.5s also usually almost always come with a filter and light and some other basic stuff. There is also usually more design that goes into small tanks because they want you to put it on your desk or something, so they make them look all fancy (e.g. Fluval Edges). Big tanks on the other hand, sell like crazy, are actually cheaper to make, don't have to look as "designer" because it's so big, and usually don't come with a kit because most people buying a 30 gallon or higher are experienced fishkeepers who would prefer to choose their own setup. Where they get your money with big tanks is in decor but since you have a 30 gallon you're probably verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry familiar with that expensive struggle.

No, you can't keep male and females long term together unless you have a heavily planted tank of at least 50 gallons. 2.5 gallons is small for even one betta. Maybe get one small betta or a shrimp tank.
Everyone In The Comments
Everyone In The Comments - 6 years ago
No. You should have at least a 3 gallon tank for 1 betta, and unless you know a lot about breeding bettas you shouldn't keep more than 1 betta in the same tank. And if you keep 2 bettas of the same sex they will fight each other.

To anyone getting a betta, I have a tip! You probably don't need a heater if your house is normally around 70°, my betta has everything that Taylor explained except the heater and he's living great! He's a year old, happy, and healthy! And she is right about the filter. A very light flow filter is the best! I have an air filter, and the tank is not dirty except for the reoccurring algae cuz of my living plant, but my snail eats the algae so my tank is very clean!

Man when I was a 11 year old novice with a big ol 25 gallon tank and just got me some christmas money I had two kinds of gold fish (comet and a fancy) 3 bettas (one was a girl one was a boy and another was one of the "baby" ones) and they all pretty much lived great together and there was only a little bit of nipping of th e female from the male but besides that they loved it. I even upgraded when I found an ASTOUNDING find near my dumpster A PERFECT AND COMPLETELY SET UP 50+ TANK it had so much cool stuff with it too
It was fish heaven..
But unfortunately when we moved ...I BROKE MY TANK and me and my mom didnt have much money at all.. so we had to settle for a 5 gallon bucket
When we did get a tank we put in the water purifier we waited about an hour
But i forgot to shake the purifier bottle

All

All my beautiful fish I had died

I will never forget to shake the bottle again

Now though after a few years with mostly guppies here and their I now have a 10 gallon with a beautiful make betta, 2 male and female african dwarf frogs, 3 guppies 2 females one male and one cute little platy
I plan on upgrading soon and hopefully breeding my ADFs for my moms room and she can have this tank

Also what the success rate of having smaller fish like gupies or something like that or neon tetras with a male beta that has been alon in a tank for 6months or longer and with a tank mate for over a year that i removed when i was given the fish due to he was nipping my betas fins.

Beautiful fishgirl. Great teaching job. Should not waste time talking about negative comments. Those in this list are sick and only reflect so to the world. You provide a medium for that. Can't avoid it. It is what it is. Keep up the great work. I'm loving it!

Great video I really want a betta fish now. So I would most likely put the betta in my room. My normal room temperature is around 68-78
so does that mean I have to change the temperature of the heater or just let it change by its self like you said or just don't put a heater in
Heather Barrett

QUESTION: I really want an animal to interact with me (I've been on the pet hunt for almost a year now). My mom doesn't allow any rodents because she really doesn't like them. This pet needs to be able to stay in my room for the most part and hopefully live alone. I'm looking into fish but again, I want an interacting animal. Is it possible to put a Betta in a small bowl (FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME ONLY LOL) Just so I can play with it for a little bit? I'd really like the help!

My parents won't allow me to buy a bigger tank for my Betta no matter how much I try. They tell me to "stop listening to the internet" and "they live in cups at the store the fish should be grateful he lives in that tank" I brought it up again recently and my parents started yelling at me about how we are never getting a bigger tank. I've even offered to pay for everything but they won't budge. Any tips?

I was given a betta a long time ago, her name was Orca. She was the first pet that was my own, not a family one. She was already old and the people who gave her to me expected her to die pretty soon (which was a fucked up thing to do to a 9 year old.) But she lived for another two years after that and we never had a heater with our tank. And then my mom decide it was ok to put a blood frog in the tank without doing any research. Orca killed the frog after a blood worm latched onto her, that's what blood frogs eat. She killed the frog but suffered horrible damage to all her fins. They were torn and brittle looking. I thought she was going to die but she pushed through and recovered. Watching this video shows me that we did everything wrong (except for the tank) and yet she lived so much longer than expected, especially with how ignorant we were about her care. I was so lucky to have her as long as I did and I definitely want to get another in the future. Thank you for the informative video.

Came here cause I thought I was taking bad care of my Betta (Remington the 2nd) but according to this I'm doing very well, he has his own low current filter, automatic heater, fake plant (soft material) for him to hide he gets weekly water changes with conditioned water that I let the heater warm up first then I dump my Betta in. He gets fed daily with pellets his gravel is nice and I also rinse and wash it throughly when I clean the tank he also has his own small cave to hide in as well as a color changing light and bubbler thing that helps oxygenate the water. He was a gift and the day I got him saw he had swimmers bladder I nursed him back to health and just have loved him ever since. And yes his tank is complete with a lid ! He's succeeded in jumping out once panicked as he fell 3 ft have since bough a new tank with a lid with a hole for feeding and the filter so no need to even risk removing the lid so that he may fall out.
