I saw several posts that mentioned electrical current. It would be fairly easy to get a multi-meter & test for electrical current. Even if you didn't get shocked putting your hands in the tank, a muiti-meter could measure current at different voltage levels.

Did you do a fish autopsy (what ever their called) to see if there are any internal parasites of worms, etc.?

Hope you find what killed your guys!!
inventoryking

I wasn’t able to do autopsy. I will be testing the water with a multimeter. Thanks for watching and commenting

Haha, I was the one who also got an electrical charge. We found that a ventilation fan made a cable swing back and forth creating a short cut. This was 40 years ago but I remember that some Scatophagus and Venustus Haps were the victims - always one at a time.

Kroeger Markus
Kroeger Markus - 6 years ago
i am mentioning that because of own bad experience. Years ago we had this in our shop. Fish dying without obvious cause. Then we found a loose connection sending electrical shocks under certain conditions. Btw. Greetings from Germany. ;)

The closely timed losses suggest a foreign substance that poisoned the fish. If it was parasites, an experienced aquarist like yourself would have seen signs of an infestation and had time to react.

cadd808
cadd808 - 6 years ago
Sounds like gill flukes or Velvet. Healthy fish that were eating today drop just dead tomorrow. The parasites could have been dormant and maybe the water quality or too big of a water change triggered the fishes immunity to drop. Try looking at gill, body and fins samples under a microscope. If it’s negative than it could be the tap water. Man that does suck and I know the feeling.

You talked about well water paul and i have well water and the problem with my borleyi has just happend! Is the ground water changing from seasons? When i first started my tank in the summer i tested the PH in the well and it was around 8.0 and now in the winter its closer to 7.0
Willie Fistergash
Willie Fistergash - 6 years ago
inventoryking Let us know how the test comes out, i was tempted to buy an RO/DI unit for my well water but this water is so hard that i was told i needed a water softener before the RO unit because the membranes wouldn’t last long with the hardness, so for now im stuck with just straight well water and who knows whats actually in it!

Paul i have a question, i dont recall seeing where your drain system pumps the water too when they drain. It doesnt directly connect to any type of sewer or storm drain correct?
Willie Fistergash
Willie Fistergash - 6 years ago
Mbuna Territory oh ok yeah i see what you mean! I have one of those aerobic septic systems that sprays crap out all over the property and we have to add chlorine tabs to it but yeah that waste eventually leaches back down into the water supply, our whole neighborhood has these systems, its probably why the Nitrates are so high in the well water!
Mbuna Territory

It pumps it outside to a drain line that I installed. It drains to my little runoff to a field.
Mbuna Territory
Mbuna Territory - 6 years ago
Willie Fistergash not asking about water supply, but where his water drains to from his waterchange system. If directly connected to a sewer or other drain system cross contamination can occur and allow bacteria or sewer gas back into his system
Willie Fistergash
Willie Fistergash - 6 years ago
Mbuna Territory Paul said he has well water and so do i, unfortunately we have to worry about farmers and fertilizers and what ever contaminants that may be down in the underground! Just like my well, the nitrates are almost to high to even think of starting a tank, back in the summer mine was reading close to 40ppm nitrates and i bought the more accurate seachem test kit and its showing around 20ppm nitrates now

jack jill
jack jill - 6 years ago
Low numbers of fish in a tank make for nervous fish. If the male jumped it is possible the females jumped, hitting their heads killing themselves, but not making it out of the tank. It doesn't take much of a blow to the top of the head to kill a fish.
