In a one month period, my fish made two in the same spot! Im so glad he is happy and thriving. He is only in a 2.5 gall (would have got bigger but people say thats the bare minimum) filtered, heated, lit and currently going through the cycle now. I was so scared that the cycle would stress or kill him but he is hanging on!

I have my betta in a 2.5 gallon tank. he likes to rest in a corner of the tank on some of the plants every now and then. I actually just noticed the large bundle of bubbles.
he's one of the most active fish I have ever seen, of course, most betta I've seen have been in small vases... the poor things.

Little sister got a beta fish awhile ago, trying to learn about it. Sad to see kids get fish for them to live miserably until they eventually die from improper care. Trying to do what I can to make life easier for it even though I've never had a pet fish before. I'm afraid to give it a name (as my sister hasnt given it one) because it'll be even more depressing once it does finally die.

I got my dragonscale betta Draco nearly 2 weeks ago and for the past few days he's been building a bubble nest, but always too close to the filter and the running water kept messing it up. Today he's finally getting it right and now it's twice as big as it was before! I also didn't know why he was doing it until I looked up online and was surprised and pretty happy. He also started doing it in the part of the tank where I stand to feed him and his tank mates so I think he's showing off, lol!

You're not supposed to keep two males together, however you can keep multiple females with a male or even multiple females without a male.
Katy Sullivan

crf450r bullet david yes you should not keep betas together. If it's a male and a female they will mate within a day, if they do not remove one and put it in a separate tank

my betta is building a bubble nest. however, i am gonna add a filter in the place on Wednesday. Is it okay if I destroy his bubble nest? Would that upset him?
Also, i just got this fish for about a week. But I changed him to two different tanks, changed water for more than 5 times, and is it okay if I change 100% water on Wednesday? Is that too frequently? (bc i wanna redecorate my tank, but i am concern that he would be stress by the new environment.)
Need some advice.
Thank you so much!!!

DON'T. The filter might cause a bit to much current and pop the bubbles.

I have a quick question. Why did my female betta fish suddenly start building this nest? It's only for males, right?
Sydney Anderson-moore
Sydney Anderson-moore - 8 years ago
the male is more likely to build it as he is the caretaker for the babies, but the female can do it if she is so inclined, or is ready to mate.
Kathy Hanson
Kathy Hanson - 8 years ago
ok... my male beta keeps making bubble nests.. so if it wants to mate how does that work? as i have heard the male will kill a female beta.. ????
Jackalope 212
Jackalope 212 - 7 years ago
That's not 100% true. Male bettas will make bubble nests if the conditions are right (water is the right temp, chemical balance is good, and so on) but they will make nests even if there are no females around. Also, all bettas have different personalities and might get along with other fish and even other bettas (but NEVER put 2 males together, they will fight to the death), while other bettas rather be alone. My betta is in a community tank with some shrimp, ADFs, a snail and a tetra and he's building a nest.

I got my first betta only 2 months ago. Without doing any research, I foolishly bought the "starter kit" that was only 1.5 gallons. It did not take long for me to realize my betta was miserable. He was constantly searching for an escape (swimming back and forth in an erratic way) and I could not keep the water clean. Last weekend, I upgraded him to a 5 gallon aquarium, and within 3 days he built his first HUGE bubble nest! I did not even know what it was at first, so I skimmed it off the top of the water thinking it was an imbalance of some sort. He built a new one the very next day, and I happened to catch him doing it. Then I knew there was something deliberate about the behavior and not a water problem. I am so glad to finally know it means he thinks his new environment is now worthy of babies!

Try putting some dwarf water lettuce in the tank. it's a floating plant. the day I added it ours built a huge nest. now it's about 9 inches worth.

it means they happy and healthy if they build a nest. but doesn't always mean it's unhappy unhealthy if it doesn't build a nest.

Keeps them busy I suppose.

My Betta just started doing this the other day! I never even knew they did this until I started seeing all these random bubbles.. I don't have a female so I guess he is trying to tell me He wants one and some babies!  lol  He hasn't been working hard like yours, He just had random bubbles everywhere! I was kind of shocked because I have had him almost 3 years! It is very neat to watch!

Leanne Girard this was 2 years ago. But random bubbles are a sign of an unhealthy Betta. Its only when it's in a cluster, especially in a corner that it's a sign of good health and happiness

Thanks for posting this-- We have a male betta, and he must be shy about building his bubble nests, because he builds them when we're not looking! We just find them in the morning or after being away for the day. So this is the first time I actually get to see how he must be doing it!

It's really all about the warm water when it comes to betta fish. Even a heated half gallon tank can produce a thriving and healthy betta. My orange butterfly veiltail betta, Feather, lives in a heated half gallon tank with water changes done every other day and he is extremely active. He builds bubble nests regularly and loves swimming around the plant and heater in his tank. ^^

I have a Shortfin betta fish. He is too lazy to make a bubble nest so he just make bubbles where ever he is and then he pushes the bubbles into a corner. Also I have started to notice a split in his tail that appeared after cleaning his bowl.

This is late. The best food to feed betta is live blood worms. Only feed 2-3 blood worms in the morning and later at night. If you cant find live blood worms then you can also feed betta freeze dried blood worms. But if you were to feed them pellets i find the only pellets they eat more is ATISON BETTA PRO PELLETS. 1/2 gallon is enough for a healthy betta also make sure your water temperature is 75-80 degree. Also use some almond leaves. They care sickness and make betta healthy.

How big is his tank? When we first got our betta he was much the same way. He was in a 1 gallon tank. Then we added a heater designed for small tanks and kept the water around 72-74 I believe, and he perked right up. Then we got him a 5 gallon tank w/heated water, and he loved that even more. In the end he was in a 12 gallon heated tank. He adored it and was very active. So I'd try getting a size appropriate heater if you don't already have one.

They are preparing to spawn with a female betta when they are making the nest but you have to introduce male a female in separate tanks until they are ready for each other and make make sure they get good nutrition and you release the female in the same tank when the bubble nest is big enough

My understanding is the male betta will take the eggs and place them in the nest individually, then guard the nest until they hatch. I'm no expert, but that's what I read. :-) So sorry to hear about your fish dying. The fish in this video passed away a few months ago of dropsy. We have two new bettas now, a brother and sister. The female is in a 5 gallon tank, and the male is in a 12 gallon. They seem pretty happy - and we got them from a breeder. Pet stores are awful to their fish!

May I ask what does the Betta fish do with the nest? I used to have a betta named Hailo he died after about a month he had a nice big and clean tank but sadly I never was able to get another fish but the next year I got two gold fish named Gupie and Tubby you can notice what they look like by the names but the next week they died :-( I took great care of all my fish! Thats just sad though if you see the pet store they keep the Bettas in a terrible condition!

Get a bigger tank (at least 5 gallon) and a size-appropriate heater. Provide plenty of places for your fish to swim through and hide. Search the internet for the best tank setup for bettas. Good luck!

Feed fry baby brine shrimp, crushed flakes, and use a sponge filter! Jar the males because they will grow aggressive and attack the other fry. I'm 11 years old and am a expert at bettas.
shrek dog

@mega23man Feed them brine shrimp for her to get plump with eggs and put her in a 5-10 gallon tnk in a vase, once the male builds a nest, release the female, watch them to make sure he doesnt attack or kill. The female will float up and the male will wrap himself around her and you should see little white dots come out, those are eggs. once he places them in the nest, REMOVE the female because the male can get aggressive and kill her. once the fry are free swimming remove the male and feed fry.

@xjellycake Here's a really good thread on filters for 2.5g tanks: bettafish. com / showthread. php?t=37528 (remove spaces). That's a really good forum for betta lovers, btw. Lots of awesome info there. Good luck!

@xjellycake Thank you! Filters are always good. There are a lot of types out there, and I'm honestly not sure what would be best for a 2.5g tank. You might want to research it a bit. Also, make sure you are monitoring the temp in the tank and keeping it somewhere around 79 F. It is super easy for a small tank to overheat and cook the fish to death. Good luck with your betta! :-)

@414jenmi Congrats on getting your first betta! They are great little fish. However, I'm not sure your little guy will make a bubble nest in a half gallon tank. Bettas really need a minimum of a 2.5 gallon tank, though a 5 gallon or bigger is better. Once they're in a bigger tank with a heater, they swim more, make bubble nests, and are a lot happier. :-)

@ilovbettas I'm not set up to breed bettas, and honestly don't have the time and energy to devote to it. We live in a small apartment with one 5 gallon and one 12 gallon tank and no room for anything else. I do support reputable betta breeders, though. :-)

@Golliepag Yep, he was a crown tail. He died a few weeks ago, unfortunately. But he had a happy life while he was alive. We ordered two new bettas - one for the 12 gallon tank and one for our 5 gallon. I love betta fish. :-)

@TaniandDodgie Welcome to the world of Bettas! Samson was in an Eclipse Hex 5 gallon in this video. That tank comes with its own filter. If you don't have a 5 gallon yet, I strongly suggest saving up for at least a 10 gallon. Samson is now in a 12 gallon Marineland Eclipse, which also comes with its own filter system. The bigger the tank, the less work to maintain it, plus you can add other fish, decorations, or some ghost shrimp! Meanwhile, try lowering the water level a bit to help w/current.

What kinda of filter do you have? I have a 2.5 gallon tank (We don't have so much money to get a 5 gallon tank yet :/... I'm also just a beginner at Bettas) I have a small Aqueon Quiet Flow filter but whenever I turn it on, my Betta has trouble swiming. Think you can help me?

@skayerboycesar He's in an Eclipse Hex 5 gallon tank. I don't know about the female thing, since we only have the one fish. Mostly I think males will flare at and attack females unless they're in the mood to breed.

@skayerboycesar He just started making it. Male bettas do this when they're happy and wanting to mate. It's usually a sign that it's probably safe to introduce a female betta to the tank if you're wanting to breed them. :-)
