So..I just got a Betta fish and he is laying down. I figured he was sleeping, but when I touch him, he doesn't have a reaction. Is he dead or in a deep sleep

Macaroni King take a close look at your bettas gills. If they are moving, he is alive. If they are not moving and he doesn’t react to you touching him or tapping the tank, he is gone. Be gentle with him though

Mine was green when I bought it but it is all discolored now. Brown, light green and dark green. Idk how to keep them a consistent color. The water ph is fine and I dose tank once a week with plant food and they receive 8 hours of light a day from my tank lights. I clean them weekly. I have two and they’ve both been discolored.

Just bought a moss ball and Anubias nana for my betta tank. I’m a little concerned because I think I might have been too rough with the Anubias nana

Question -- Yes, I'm one of those that "saved" a betta at a certain pet store, as he was almost dead in the cup. Fast forward 3 years later, and he's a happy fellow in a 20 gallon tank. With that being said, I believe we are contributing to the problem by purchasing them in the first place (I'm realizing that now). But since there are no "Betta Rescue" places, how else could we obtain one without purchasing from the very stores that cause the issue? Just wondering your thoughts on this. Thank you for this video!

Marisa Batta-Reu ---- thank you for your response. When I bought my little fella he was very very small, with barely any fins. He is now full grown, and we haven't had any issues with him (knock on wood). Thanks much!

There are betta breeders that always breed bettas that are beautiful but also genetically healthier than the pet store bettas (if they are a reliable breeder). These tend to be more expensive but easily obtainable from many sites but it is also depending on the amount of money you are willing to spend. Not to say all bettas from pet stores are genetically unhealthy but most are. I got mine from Petco as a juvenile and he's had no sicknesses and I forget when I got him so I assume he's around 5-7 months or possibly more but I got him when he was about 9 or 10 weeks so close to a month old because that's generally when the bettas labelled as baby bettas are sold. I have had a few incidents with him( not any illnesses) but he's always recovered so I believe and hope I've gotten lucky with him because he holds his fins very well and I see no deformities. That being said, a half-moon or any betta with a ton of fins, no matter where you get it from will always live less than a betta with less finage because the heavy fins drag and it's stressful, that's why many half-moons have worn or ragged tails, from dragging or tail biting. So in general, some tail types are healthier than others.

I totally agree with what you are saying! I went to Walmart and was shocked at the condition all of their fish were kept in with betta fish being THE WORST they had no fins at all! I think the best way to make places that are unfit to care for fish is to not buy at all because I've noticed a lot of Walmarts have been abandoning their fish sections. I would probably purchase from local aquarium stores if you are near any. Their fish always seem to be in the best condition.

Hi, what is the name of live plants in your tank? I just started and want to add a moss ball and a live plant as well. I like your plants - where and how can I find one? Thank you in advance.

clare no I don’t think that’d be the best. It could potentially make your Betta sick or choke them.

Is it OK to put one in to help cycle a tank? Would it help give a good bacteria boost, or hurt the moss ball, instead?

Could be overfeeding, but bettas can get constipation/blockage and die from it if they are not overfed too, although overfeeding does increase the risk of blockage.
