i loved it but for bettas you do not need a filter because they a
have a set of gills just for dirty water but ther is a sicknis bug eye wher the water gets to dirty.

I am told substrate is great for healthier plants and a red light helps them photosynthesize better. That will help keep optimal oxygen and water quality, Watch your PH level as well. Not too acidic! 7.6 little more basic water.

Nice job getting set up! I'd add some floating plant like frogbit. It's really good for keeping the ammonia levels down, and bettas like building bubble nests under the leaves. You probably know tanks need about a month to cycle fully, so I'd get a test kit for ammonia and nitrites, since those will probably spike during the cycle. The Prime only detoxifies them for 24-48 hours. If you start to get algae, a single nerite snail will keep things spotless :)

+Bolony1988 I got a handful a few weeks ago, and am already scooping it out in all 3 of my tanks and throwing extra away. That's just excess so I only have about 1/2 of the surface covered. It seems to double in numbers just about every week. Don't get duckweed though! That stuff is sooo messy and sticks to everything. You'll put an arm in to rearrange a plant or something, pull it out, and look like creature from the black lagoon :P

+Tanya S thank you! I really research A LOT from different sources in the internet before I buy my fish because I am not ready to learn the things the hard way :) Also, about the frogbit... they say It grows really fast. How long do u think will it take to cover my entire 5 gal aquarium?

ooops I see I double posted, lol.. It hung up and errored on the first one so I wrote another. Oh well! Well if you got nitrates, it'd seem the cycle already is going, but still ammonia so hmm. I always have 0 ammonia and nitrites when I get nitrates. Maybe it doesn't cycle the same way with that jump start solution you have. I always cycled naturally. You seem to know a lot about tank keeping, so enjoy!

I plan on doing an update maybe this week then every 1 or 2 months. I will look for frogbit, I am not really sure if Petco has frogbit but I really like how It looks and I think it can reduce my water current too...? Thanks for the info about prime and I also want a nerite snail, maybe soon if my tank starts having diatoms :) thank you for the advice!!! very appreciated! I just tested my water today, My ammonia is 0.25 and my nitrAte is 40 >.<" I use API tester, sorry I can't find the nitrite tester... the "full" master kit is quite expensive xD

You did really good getting ready for your betta! Good job putting the sponge over the intake. I'd suggest getting a floating plant like Frogbit for the surface. It's super good for ammonia, and bettas like building their bubble nests under the leaves. You probably already know that cycling takes around a month usually, so be sure to get a test kit for ammonia and nitrites, since they may spike while it's cycling.
