Hi! I've LOVED this tank setup for YEARS now! I now have a new apartment that this setup would look amazing in. Now, i'm ready to FINALLY try this out myself but i have a question. I've read so much on threads and blogs about how its unsafe to put dried bamboo in an aquarium. Toxins, Bacteria, Rot etc. What did you do to the bamboo to seal it or make it safe for the aquarium? I've read about marine epoxy, silicone sealer, kryon fusion, etc but i still cant find an EXACT answer. Also, where did you get the bamboo sticks from? Home Depot, Craft Store, etc. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me! Thank you so much for your time, I really appreciate it.

The baby's tears at the top. I'm wanting to add some at in my aquarium but how do you get it at the top of your tank? Everything I'm seeing says you have to plan it in your substrate. I don't really wanted at the bottom I would just like to have it across the top to baffle the flow of my pump. Do tell!

I will always want this tank, and never accomplish it. I set one up in inspiration of this one with a stature of Ganesh, as my very fisrt tankls but it always ended up degenerating from lack of patience and improper plant choice. Eventually I took the statue out as the paint was peeling. I may have discarded it but I hope not. I should try again with more patience and proper plant selection.
All of my current tanks have a natural appearance sans statues ect. but I'd love one like this.

Nice set up.. But in respect buddha must be kept clean is not allowed to be submerged underwater, on the ground (unless in a shrine), facing the toilet or behind when your inside the house... They must sit high.. And face the front door entrance.. Protect your from intruders

Quick question for you betta experts, is $30 a lot for a betta? There's a black short-tail halfmoon (plakat?) and somef red halfmoons at my local fish store selling for $30. The black one's jet black with just a smudge of white on the ends of the front fins (or whatever they're called, sorry I'm still new to this) and the reds are well... red. There's also a blue halfmoon but its fins are kinda torn and there was barely enough water in there... Well anyway, are they worth it? Thanx in advance :3

@fishkillernomore OMG! That dragon is WICKED! I have two like that but they are in different poses than yours. I LIKE YOURS BETTER! I think this tank would be an excellent Betta one. You say there at your blog that you are going to add more branches and plants. For a Betta tank thats best and it looks better even though you like the more minimalist look the best. I swear Dude, someone could give you a plastic box, clump of weeds, and a couple of rocks and you'd make it look like a piece of art!

@piggylord32 it rotted eventually (around 6 months). Everything organic rots if exposed to water long enough, including driftwood (though driftwood rots /erodes reaaaaaallly slowly). The bamboo sticks i had were already dried/dead when I cut them off the mother plant. Then I cut them to smaller pieces and sun dried them for an additional 3 weeks or so.

@LGITdude1 uhh yes and no. A fully submerged lucky bamboo won't last long underwater. BUT, you can keep them alive and healthy if you get ones that are tall enough where only the stems are underwater and all the leaves are above the water line. That said, you won't be able to put a top on your tank. I dont know of any other bamboo plants that can live on water.

It's nice to see someone taking so much time and effort to put together such a gorgeous tank for your betta...way too many people on here showing off their fish in pretty dismal conditions that It's fairly depressing!I just got my betta a week ago and the little guy is part of my family now,they are great fish!I have his five gallon set up right next to the computer so he has something to look at and doesnt feel alone...Its funny how socialable and friendly they are

@stfumvs anything organic will rot in water eventually (driftwood, included). The bamboo lasted around 6 months before it had to be replaced. I believe proper preparation is key to long lasting bamboo: make sure it's completely dried.

@flamepeace yup :) He had one set up with just the Buddha (have you seen that one?), then another set up with just the bamboo (amazing tank with marimo moss...i envy it still haha). I just put two together and tweaked it a bit, and et voila! A zen betta tank is born! haha

@AsianburnsForlife hi! the floating plant is called baby's tears. But if have a 200 litre tank, you may want to consider something with slightly larger leaves to float. Maybe guppy grass. Or golden creeping jenny (it's actually a stem plant but you can float them).

@azureheavens90 oh geez. let's see. Tank = $80 (including shipping), buddha= $12?, betta = $3, sand = $5, plants = $30ish, heater = $35 (it was very fancy!). Plus lots of blood sweat and tears, you can't put a price on those haha.

be careful with the plant/ vines sitting on the top of the tank. usually betta fish get stuck up there and die from the lack of oxygen.

it may be rivercane, if so, its pretty common down here in the south east. theres tons of different kinds of cane that look just like bamboo (to the average viewer) all over the place. just gotta find out what grows near you.

Gorgeous! So elegant and makes me feel like I am at yoga class. Someone gave a betta to me about five weeks ago, I never had a fish before, it would have never occured to me. I cannot believe how wonderful it is to have a fish tank, but mine came out much cheesier than this! I can't stop thinking about how much I like having this fish, and I kind of want to set up another tank for the other side of my computer now!

This guy has no idea what he's talking about, dont listen to him. Ich is present in ALL tanks, it just attacks the fish when its immune system is weak. For a good ich cure, raise the temperature of the tank slowly to 80~82F...add 2 teaspoons of aquarium salt per gallon of water. Also, do a water change every day, as well as dosing the tank for the new water you just added. The ich should go away within a few days.

LOVE your tank! it's gorgeous. are there other fish in there besides the betta? thought i saw a couple tiny ones? Wondering if I can keep a few other fish in my betta tanks. I have a 6.6 gallon bookshelf tank with my poor sickly betta I rescued about 6 months ago (he is doing so much better now! but is more of a lover, not a fighter. And I just got a 10 gallon tank along with a young betta who flares at everything! very robust. lol. Any ideas for housing other fish in either or both tanks? ty:)

It's coarse white sand. Not quite sand, but not quite gravel. Gravel is ok for some plants as long as you put fertilizer tablets for them. You'll have a hard time growing "grassy"/"carpet" plants on gravel though.

one day i noticed a white film on his eyes 2 days went by, he was acting perfectly normal and the fungus wasnt as visible as before, the the next day i woke up and a part of his back was white then later that night it kept getting worse. the next day he was laying on his side alot. i took him to the store to find out what kind of medicine i needed, when i got him home i put him in the tank with his medicine and about 30 min later he wasnt doing anything but breathing so i flushed him.

While its true they can live in puddles it is only ever temporary until the next rain comes along and fills the river again. And they only survive due to their ability to take oxygen from the air. Im sure if the fish could relay its preference to us it would pick something like the tank in this video over a muddy puddle.

I'd like to take this chance to remind visitors that while a few might have success in keeping bettas with other bettas or fishy friends, this is not, I repeat, not recommended. The only exception to this rule are the wild bettas, but only with their kind, or if you are breeding like what Spichkey mentioned above. I hate to think that one kid will come home to a mess of dead bettas and fish because he/she read somewhere that they can co-exist peacefully in his/her fish tank.

you cant keep any other betta with a male betta. only exception is when breeding you intriduce the female but as soon as the job is done you take her out.

I normally don't like statues in fish tanks, but you actually made this setup look very nice. A red or more colorful betta would have looked better though. None the less, I truely like it, good job.

Nope, the home made CO2 system I made failed lol! I was afraid to use the 2 liter bottles (which was working on the 10 gallon tank) on this 4 gallon tank. Thought it might be too much CO2 in such a tiny tank. The 12 ounce bottles I made did not create enough pressure to push the air through the glass bubbler. Either way, the plants were low maintenance so it didn't really need the extra co2.

The plant floating on top looks like java moss. Great stuff, easy to find. Some of the plants on bottom look like java ferns too.

Yeah, the floating plants get pushed away by the filter on the left hand corner of the tank so there's space. Incidentally, that's also his favorite spot. I guess the soft rushing water against his tail calmed him down.

Not really. There's a filter (see upper left hand corner of the vid). Water changes were done via syphoning the water out via an air tube. This was the 2nd easiest set up (read: low maintenance) I've ever had.
