New 75 Gallon Tank Set Up (Part one)

How to set up a 75 Betta fish community tank. We have had a few problems as we've gone through the set up process and will share them as we go along. The 75 gallon tank is a Marineland tank from Petsmart and came with tank, stand , glass lid and LED lights. We are using an Aquaclear 70 for filtration. I use the same canister filter with a sponge prefilter on the intake so you technically never have to open your canister to clean it.

Hellish Underwater Adventures. - 6 years ago
Aqua clear by Fluval.. unreliable..and canisters too much maintenance and loud hums awful devices..plus far too expensive.
Under gravel filter plates run by power heads best bet..cheaper.. easier to clean better for plants.. can't go wrong. Simple gravel vac once a month 25% water change once a fortnight done.
Since 1976 been in the business I've found it the easiest cheapest trouble free way by far.
But of course it's a matter of choice.
PS.. what about a nice background on the rear of the tanks to hide the wallpaper and tubes and wire?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
You’re right filtration is a choice, we have used the aqua clear hob filter for almost two years and never had a problem with it. Easy to clean and cheap to run. We also use sponge filters in some of our tank plus canister filters in others. All of them have their merits. This tank has changed dramatically since this video. Check out the latest video on the tank. https://youtu.be/MImZMeAqhf8

On this tank we use a hang on back filter and a large sponge filter. We are thinking of getting a canister filter but haven’t done so yet.

No material for bacteria to live on so, no ammonia mitigation. You should actually know what you're doing before posting videos.
Google nitrites and nitrates and you'll put 6 inches of material on the bottom of your tank 30 days before adding fish
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I suggest you watch the rest of the series before jumping to conclusions. This tank has substrate and was fully cycled before fish were added. The ammonia and nitrite on this tank was and has remained 0 and the nitrates run at 5-10. No issues with this tank at all.

Hey! I have just set up a micro 3 gallon tank for a new betta. I was wondering if I could give my betta any tank mates in a tank as small as that. I was thinking of ghost shrimp or two, but would a betta target them? With neons, I'm not sure if they would have enough room to swim around, because they are pretty active. And with snails, I'm just not exactly sure how to care for them well. I pick up my betta tomorrow so I'm wondering if anything would work.
Christopher O'Brien

Lifewithpets Thanks a bunch for the feedback! My betta seems pretty chill and kind of just swims around the tank or sits on my heater.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Congratulations on your new tank. A snail is really the only option in a 3 gallon. I have several videos on the channel on how to care for them and the different types. The tank is great for a betta but too small to add other fish. If you got a really mellow betta you may get away with ghost shrimp but generally the bettas will go after them especially if the tank is smaller.

Fan Pop My way probably isnt the best but it works well. I run my filter, put some fishfood in the tank every few days or so. I do this for about 2/3 weeks then do a big water change, check the water peramiters and if its good then you can get some fish. If you can get established filter media it would speed up the process.
CollegeBettas
CollegeBettas - 7 years ago
The best way to cycle a tank is to do a 25% water change when the ammonia level reaches .25 ppm OR do a 50% water change when it reaches .5 ppm. My two favorite things to use during cycling are Seachem's Prime (water conditioner which makes ammonia harmless but still accessible to the beneficial bacteria to grow) and the API Ammonia Alert (a little suction cup tag that shows you the ammonia level without doing daily testing). Also, it helps in the future to use ceramic media that can be transferred into a new tank. Because I use ceramic media, I haven't had to cycle a tank since I first cycled the first bit of ceramic media (I have set up 7+ tanks since then).
Good luck cycling!
YizTheGreat
YizTheGreat - 7 years ago
Fan Pop wait a few weeks before putting fish in or get one of your friends substrate that was already in an established tank.
