Do you still have to acclimate if the temperature of the treated/cycled tank water is exactly the same as the quarantine cup?

moving my betta from a 1 gal to 10 gal. tank is all set up, how long should I let it cycle before moving him?

Bear Necessities - 6 years ago
A cycle can take a few weeks on average, I would get an API fresh water testing kit and make sure you keep an eye on your parameters! :) Does your 1g have a filter on it?

Ehhhhh after I had them in the same tank for a while I wouldn't do it again. They did okay because I had a lot of hiding places. Then one fateful day the angles went after the betta, betta jumped out of the tank, and the dog ate it. t'was a very sad day. :( Angles can be very very aggressive fish.

I would highly recommend something larger - the main reason is smaller bodies of water are harder to keep your parameters stable, not to mention, Bettas actually really do enjoy swimming a lot. I think you will find yourself to have a very healthy and long living Betta if you provide it a larger and more stable environment. :)

hi, i’ve been gifted a betta as of yesterday and i could use some tips. i’m gonna get him a bigger tank today. (the person who gifted it got me a .25 gal tank. oof.) i don’t think he’ll make it long enough in the pet store jar to cycle the tank. should i attempt a fish-in cycle?? i’ve never had a betta before, but i’ve watched many videos lately so i’d like to say i’m rather informed; i’m not experienced though.

A fish in cycle is possible and many people do it - the key for it is to do frequent and larger water changes. I would highly suggest getting yourself a water testing kit and test your water every few days to see the progress of the tank. You should be fine but keep a close eye on it and keep up with your water changes you should be fine. I would read up on a fish-in cycle and figure out what best suits your schedule. Hello~ I've been watching your videos for the past few days and love what I see. I'm planning on getting a beta fish soon and was wondering about something.
How do I cycle a tank without fish? I don't have any friends I can get gravel from and I also know that the fish less cycle can last up to four weeks so I want to know how to do this as soon as possible.
Also do you have any tips about what sort of things I should buy? I know moss balls are good but anything else? Also the tank I want to get is a 3 gallon which I feel is perfect or should I invest a bit more money and buy a bigger tank. Keep in mind that I also live in a small apartment with a roommate so I do need to keep the tank rather small.

Awesome videos and thank you in advance! :)

Thanks so much I am glad you like my videos!! To cycle your tank without fish - I would look into getting bottled bacteria. You can get this from most stores or online. I like the Seachem Stability brand the best. But you can also look into getting a pre-seeded filter. (angles plus sells them) Then you just add a food source, like fish food that will start to decompose and the bacteria will feed off of the ammonia the food will release. I have a video on 'your first betta aquarium' where I go over the ideal items you need for your tank. :) I think if you can, get a larger tank, I am finding bettas really do enjoy swimming around a lot and exploring. More room means more movement. The reason I have the smaller tanks/and the one I used in the 'first betta tank' video was they were given to me/and a little out of my control. I hope that helps! :)

Question: I'm planning on getting a betta from pet smart or petco (I know this is risky), I'm wondering if giving a new fish a epsom or aquarium salt bath before I put it in a solo tank would be a good idea because petsmart bettas are often diseased. Will an epsom bath hurt a fish if it has no preexisting illness??

Katie Marie i never do that u think that with a proper tank and food thay shuud fight it of

It's a good idea if they already have showed symptoms. If you're scared that they may be sick, make sure to let the betta separated for a few days, in a different aquarium, just so you can examine their behavior more carefully. If I'm not wrong, it's not beneficial to start treating the fish if they aren't actually sick

I love your intro!

Ps: quick question what plants would you recommend for betta fish tanks?
Finn Leijen

Something with large leaves ant that is at the water surface, bettas like to build bubble nests in this. they also like grass-like things where they can hide in.

It breaks my heart going into pet stores and seeing their fish tanks. There are always dead fish, barely any live plants and they clearly do not care to provide their fish with a stress-free environment.

I live in Sweden and our pet stores are nowhere NEAR the size of Petco and the likes though, so maybe larger retailers of fish have better environments for them?

Sometimes, but there's still a very high chance of disease/bad behavioral problems. Sometimes when I buy fish from PetSmart, I need to keep in mind the 50% survival rate that usually occurs. For bettas, I've found dead fish in their little cups, and then perfectly healthy individuals with rage issues, so sometimes you luck out, and sometimes you just go there to see the pretty fishies. It's a grab bag of a store.

he is not interested, he is showing agression. I really hope you dont keep multiple males in that tank. Also, a male makes females more aggressive and they bully the less dominant females even more. This is not good at all. It seems to work, but it is highly damaging. You can keep wild bettas in community tanks of the same breed. not these fancy breeds.

I have a 130-litre tank with a king betta. He is a really well-behaved fish and use to live in a tank with guppies. Would he be ok with an angel fish?
Bear Necessities
Bear Necessities - 7 years ago
Lucky with behaviors! I have had zero problems with aggression from any of them, if anything the females do chase each other from time to time but that is expected. My 2 black marble angles grew up together and have shown no aggression as of yet, but they still are growing out. :) And the King male kind of just does his own thing and explore the tank.

What do you recommend doing if the betta was at the bottom of the tank ? Can you a do a betta care (sick) video ?
Bear Necessities
Bear Necessities - 7 years ago
I would love to do a betta care video. I will work on one soon! If they are sitting at the bottom of the tank, looking lethargic and don't show normal behavior I would consider a massive water change first and foremost. Consider doing 75-90%. I would also consider raising the temperature a little around 80 F. Does he have any other symptoms? Flayed fins? Spots/marks blemishes? Bloat? You could also consider aquarium salt or treating with an anti-biotic. I would use erythromycin in that case. Do bi-daily water changes, and provide plenty of high nutritious foods. I hope this helps! :)

A cheaper and easier alternative for AQ salt is ice cream salt and canning/pickling salt (same thing as AQ salt and is used by breeders and so forth). I prefer canning/pickling as it is near powder and dissolves really quickly :) Good luck with him, he's pretty! Love the King as well <3

Funny, I also get the sickly looking one's and rehabilitate them. They usually bounce back. It's just the stress they've been through from breeder to store and getting placed in a cup where people poke at them in store. I would also get sick, lol
Bear Necessities
Bear Necessities - 7 years ago
Yeah no kidding! The process they go through is just crazy! I know that with a little TLC he will be back to full health. :)
