New fish and Plants in a 75 Gallon Betta Fish Tank. (Part 3)

Setting up our new 75 Gallon planted Betta fish community tank. We used several different aquarium plants including bacopa, Anubias, Amazon sword and Lobilia Cardinalis. All these plants are easy to grow in low light. We've added, female Bettas, Otocinclus, Clown loach, Dension Barbs, Clown Pleco, Harlequin Rasboras and Corys. The decorations, sand and gravel are all from Petsmart and the small grey slate stones came from Michaels. For substrate we used sand, Eco Complete and gravel. The sand and gravel came from Petsmart and the Eco Complete came from Amazon. What fish do you recommend
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
5-6 females and I wouldn't do neons they can be nippy and the tank would be too overstocked for the number you would have to add for them to be happy.

Can anyone in the comments tell me how long beneficial bacteria can live with little to no ammonia (I'm cycling my tank but my nitrates and nitrites are not where they're supposed to be yet)
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Sounds like you're doing it just fine. There need to be a source of ammonia for the cycle to finish.
Jen C
Jen C - 7 years ago
Lifewithpets thanks I knew the process but I wasn't sure I was doing thing correctly do you think I should keep adding food to supply ammonia or just wait for the cycle to finish?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
No, that's a good thing. As you go through the cycle the ammonia will become 0 and that's a good thing your nitrites will spike, they will then start to drop overtime and you should then be showing nitrates. Eventually you want no ammonia or nitrites and 5-20ppm nitrates.
Jen C
Jen C - 7 years ago
Lifewithpets I think I have so little ammonia because I'm about half way through the cycling process and the bacteria is eating the ammonia faster than it's eating the other stuff (not that in an expert but my ammonia was very high before) and I don't have fish in the store tank I've been using fish food to supply ammonia
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I have only done a little research on this but it seems they can last several days to several weeks. If they do deplete they usually will bounce back and replicate quickly. Why do you have little to no ammonia?

I was wondering if you could do a video about how you use pothos in your tanks? I tried it once and the betta passed away the next day. I think it might have been the pothos. It was a fresh clipping and may have leaked something in the tank. Please let me know your thoughts or if you have any advice?

Stephen Stratakos
Stephen Stratakos - 7 years ago
I know it doesn't seem like it, but you are overstocking your tank HEAVILY. you said you will be getting 6 cory cats, and each one should have about 5 g of space, so thats 30 g already. One clown loaches needs 40 g to thrive, and 20 additional gallons for each additional clown loach. a clown pleco needs at least 30 g of space to grow, unless they will pass of organ disfuntions. Otocinclus need 10 g for one, and 5 additional gallons for each other one. female bettas should have at least 2.5 g to thrive. denison barbs need at least 40 g each to thrive aswell. THIS IS ALREADY 210 GALLONS only including 1 otocinclus, 1 denison barb, 4 female bettas, one clown pleco, no rasboras, 6 cory cats and 3 clown loaches. I am not trying to be mean or rude, but in the wild these fish have 1000s of gallons of space, and this is only the minimum.
Pittsburgh FishGuy
Pittsburgh FishGuy - 6 years ago
30 gallon for a clown pleco? Crazy.......lol.
RM Aquatics
RM Aquatics - 7 years ago
Stephen Stratakos stocking in this tank is completely fine you're looking at like each fish must have that gallon minimum to themselves. that's not true.
Slimy Stuff
Slimy Stuff - 7 years ago
Stephen Stratakos Look man, you added up all the gallons each fish species needed and you thought they needed that amount individually. Simple mistake
Stephen Stratakos
Stephen Stratakos - 7 years ago
Slimy Stuff, Imight not have made it clear enough. I did not mean they need a max amount of gallons to live, but you can check many websites yourself and they will tell you the same information, especially for the loaches and denison barbs
Slimy Stuff
Slimy Stuff - 7 years ago
Stephen Stratakos I'm pretty sure you have very little idea as to what you're talking about. The only thing that could possibly, yet unlikely, cause problems would be the Clown Loaches. Also, just because the fish require a minimum amount of gallons doesn't mean they have to be the only fish living in that amount of gallons.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
No offense taken. Thank you for your opinion, whilst I don't fully agree with it, it is something I will take into consideration when choosing the final stocking levels.

I feel you with the ick too when I set up my 20 gallon long guppy tank it had a huge outbreak I luckily only lost two fish but it was hard to treat the fish and keep the plants healthy.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
They really are a beautiful fish, a bit on the pricey side but worth it. They need to be in groups of 5 or more. The ick is more challenging when you have live plants but thankfully it's gone!

Thank you! I can't wait for them to grow out a little more. They really melted back when we treated the tank for ick but they've bounced back well.

I love all the fish you decided to stock the tank with! They are all looking good after what I am sure was a very stressful time with the ich and everything that happened. So glad the plants are looking healthy, too! You guys did a wonderful job with this tank!

great video look out for the rose line sharks when they get big they can eat your cory catfish and otocinclus mine did that and they weren't even full grown not to be a hater my experience

I'm sorry to hear that. Sometimes fish behavior out of character. I guess the guidelines are very generally and not every fish will behave the same way. Thanks for your concern and I will be watching them closely.

but my corries where still young but yes it was a roseline shark i had 5 and i don't know why they did that i gave them food every day and every 2 times a week i gave them some frozen food

Thanks, I'm be surprised by that, their mouths even when big are only tiny as they're more of a slim line fish. We've had them before with Cory's and all sort of small fish and they've never harmed them. Are you sure it was the roselines? That would be very out of character for them to do that.

dont you think these big fish will just take over the tank?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
No, they're all peaceful fish and the tank is large enough to take care of them.

I have 3 female betta fish in the same tank, they are fighting, what I can make?

You need a minimum of 5 females in a heavily planted tank. A 10 gallon tank is minimum but I think 20 gallons is better.
