One betta fish's incredible recovery! Willy the rescue betta.

Check out the video of Willy 6 months later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj-wgjdwNj8 Please read: I've made this video to show people that every soul deserves a second chance. The pet store saw no chance in him and basically just gave him to me so they wouldn't have to kill him themselves. I'm sorry for the bad video quality but everything was filmed on my iPhone. Due to my low budget his first quarantine tank wasn't meant for fish which is why I decided to move him into the 54L tank, which ended up taking up all the space in my dormitory room, so I had to move him again as mentioned in the video. Willy suffered from: Swim bladder disorder (SBD) Worms - which kind I'm not sure Fin/tail rot Fungus Severe starvation Now he's a happy healthy betta loving every food that I offer and he frequently builds a nest to care for. He was basically "cured" in less than a month if you don't count the fin that needs to grow back out.

I disagree with Random Taco. Yes, that is a point of consideration, it would take months and countless Betta deaths before that would even come into consideration and even then, there could be more shipments coming in.

I have a betta. His name is Azure. I rescued him from a pet store. He had fin rot. He was also in a tiny aquarium. He is now in a 7.6 gallon aquarium, he has a heater and I cured him from fin rot. He is very happy.

I’m also saving Bettas.... I already have four. One is in a 2.5 gallon filtered tank, one is in a 7 gallon community tank (bubble bowl), the other two are currently in a 1/2 gallon quarantine tank since one suffered fin rot and is now healing, the last one has just recently gotten fin rot and I’m treating it. I don’t really need a heater because my country is tropical and the temperature is just right for tropical fish like bettas. I plan on saving a few more and just putting them on 1 gallon tanks first. I will also of course provide the needed water changes for all the tanks I have them in. I just recently saved a beautiful halfmoon betta from the fate that the other bettas in a pet store just experienced. Most of them look very sick and are about to die, so I got the healthiest one instead.

I got a blue crowntail last Halloween and she was in horrible shape. I named her Cortana (I'm a huge Halo fan). Her fins were black and in complete tatters from fin rot. She was also covered in white cotton-like fungus and was skinny. I had her for a week and she was showing improvement and then she suddenly died. I suspect it was from another illness that I didn't detect. RIP Cortana.

So when the tail and fins are like his where that means they have fin rot? I just picked up a betta from the petshop and he didn't look so good so thats why i picked him, and his tail and fins aren't all fluffed out like a normal one would be, and he has brown on his top.

You are so kind for rescuing this betta. But.....buying a betta from a pet store makes the pet store buy more bettas cause they think, “oh people are buying these bettas, lets continue to get more of them since people like them so much.” Anyways, no hate I still think it’s lovely you take bettas and give them the treatment they diserve.
Random Taco
Random Taco - 7 years ago
As much as I love rescuing bettas, if you really want to save more bettas then have them be treated so poorly you shouldn’t buy them from pet stores. The pet stores use the money to get more of those bettas and continue to treat them badly.

im planning on doing the exact same thing. but before i do, i want to know what to look for in a betta. (i hate buying live animals from chain stores, but i think im going to this one time.) i actually have 7 bettas right now in divided 5 gallons with a filter, heater, and bubbler etc but i want at least one rescue betta. i know what fungus and ich looks like because i've dealt with them in the past. i also know what dropsy looks like. but i don't know what worms look like. could someone in the comments please explain it??

I think you should just keep the healing process natural. You don't want to make the water quality bad. It is just like if a person got a cut..it will heal on it's own. My Betta, Ninja had a tail injury, and it was been around 3 weeks and it is 3/4 of the way healed. I think it just depends on the fish.
Jhun Casupanan
Jhun Casupanan - 7 years ago
do you think methyline blue will help him recover faster
Horseluver4ever 1234
Horseluver4ever 1234 - 7 years ago
Well, with a normal, young, healthy Betta it would probably take a few weeks. If you do frequent water changes than it might heal quicker.
Jhun Casupanan
Jhun Casupanan - 7 years ago
Horseluver4ever 1234 how long it will take to full recover? half of tail fins is ripped
Horseluver4ever 1234
Horseluver4ever 1234 - 7 years ago
There is really no medicine you could use for a ripped fin. But I suggest you keep you Bettas separated because they are very territorial fish. You just need to wait out the healing process of you Betta's fins.
Jhun Casupanan

I'm doing a Simalr thing with my betta Fantom I bought him on Tuesday. He was in a .25 gallon tank that hadn't been cleaned in ages. He was starving and I didn't even know what he looked like when I first said I wanted him. The lady took him out and I saw these beautiful colors but horrible fin rot and ich. I git home and let his bag float in his tank. I then realeased him and he seemed confused at all the space. I put the lava lamp near him because he likes to watch it move around. I love him so so much and hope to help him

hi u know so much and opened my eyes to the fact of me not taking the proper steps to curing my fish please let me know how u cured the swim bladder any medication or peas? and as for clamped fins and ripped pieces clean water and cattapa leaves are the only thing so know of is there anything else? and what medication DL you use for fungus or finrot and how do u know u betta didn't just rip them? I am eagerly waiting a reply amazing video what an amazing thing u did for that betta
Katrine
Katrine - 7 years ago
I gave him peas, yes, but I'm not sure that's what made the difference. I honestly just gave it time and lucky for me Willy was young and young fish has a better chance of recovering.
As shown in the video I use Methylene blue for treating fungus and Tremezol for clamped fins.
You should know though, that clamped fins are a symptom of something else that is wrong with your fins - you cannot treat clamped fins in just one way. You need to figure out what the real problem is.
(it's kinda like a stomach ache can be a symptom of a lot of things wrong with a person)

Hi, try adding catappa leaves to his tank and do daily water changes up to 90%. Fin rot can be cured with just fresh clean water every day.
Good luck!

Alaska If their sick though most stores will give you a discount or just give it to you for free if you ask. So you take away money from the store, and can still save the betta

You aren’t “rescuing” the betta although you are saving them you are just buying a sick fish and then they get restocked with more sick fish

hi. if anyone can answer something for me-

I got my veiltail male, Flicker, at petco, he was the healthiest they had. I wash his tank twice a month, and feed him night and day. but, I think he has minor fin rot and is sadly blind. for the rot, how could I treat it?
Katrine
Katrine - 7 years ago
holdingoutforahero do daily 90% water changes and keep the temperature up.
I always treat with water changes and catappa leaves and if it's really bad, I use methylene blue as shown in the video.
If you're worried that he's slight blind, don't worry, they'll do just fine if they turn blind.
