Setting up One Gallon Betta Fish Jars.

Today we set up one gallon Betta fish grow out jars for our juveniles while they wait to go to new homes. These jars are NOT suitable for permanent homes and need to be water changed at least every other day if not daily. The water temperature needs to be kept stable at 78-82f. There is also no filtration due to them being temporary holding jars. This means daily maintenance is important for the health of the Betta Fish. I’d say 5 gallons at least. All my bettas are in 5-20 gallons. These jars are for grow out only before they’re sold. They need to be separated. These are bigger than what most breeders use. Most use a half gallon or smaller. We chose to go on the larger size. They were in these for 4 weeks before they went to their new homes. Plenty big enough for their purpose.

do they get disease easily since they are shared in the same water in the tank? I was thinking of buying a tank and divide it like yours but people say that if one gets disease, others can easily get it too.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 5 years ago
Having two fish in a tank is no different than having a community tank. So yes it can happen but good water quality and healthy food makes a big difference. I’ve not had a Betta get sick from sharing a tank with another.

I just got a brand new beutiful Betta fish names gilbert he came from petsupermarket I am so exited about him but the new tank came with a filter and the flow seems to be about strong so I unplugged it do u have anysugggestions
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 5 years ago
Assuming the filter is a hang on the back filter you could Try adding a piece of sponge in front of the flow as it comes out of the filter. If you do a YouTube search you should find videos showing how to do it.

That’s great! Could you mabey make the jars bigger? At least 2.5....
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Not for grow out containers. You couldn’t realistically do that and there is no need as they are very temporary. Usually a Betta Fry spawn can be 50-100 fish sometimes more! There is no way you could do that many 2.5 gallon tanks it doesn’t work that way for breeding. Most breeders use much smaller than these and don’t add in almond leaves or plants. The fish are only held in them for a short time so they can be monitored before going to their new homes. They get very regular water changes which is a lot of work and are very active.

Hey, i have a problem with my tank, i need to have its lid open because if i close it, it will start condensation and the temperature goes from 26° to 29° or even more (i dont know if it goes up more than that never tried, dont want to kill my betta), but because i leave it open it gets dirty (with dust) and i cant fill it to the top for my betta not to jump out of it, any ideas?? I was thinking of cutting some of the lid to have air leaving/entering the tank!? Or? Help pls.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
If you have a thermometer in the tank and your house is warm you could try turning the heater off and monitor the temperature in the tank. As long as it doesn’t fluctuate more than one degree you may find you don’t need a heater.
Azymut
Azymut - 6 years ago
Hm, yes i have a heater, he is set to 78f by default, ill close the lid and try once more, letting it closed for some hours but if it gets higher than 86f idk what to do.
My home is pretty warm because it has floor heating and gets pretty hot, i think my room temperature is pretty close to 25° (77f) since i dont even see my heater working most of the time. Ill try some things.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
We have lids on our tanks and they get condensation too even with feeding holes in them. It’s not a problem. Do you have a heater in the tank? Bettas can live comfortably in temperatures up to 84-86f.

Can you help me? My Betta fish, a male crowntail named fire and ice, recently died. He only lived for about 1 year. He lived in a 3.5 tall tank with a heater and filter. Once he was in there (he changed tanks a lot) he started loosing color and would rest at the bottom of the tank at odd angles. We thought he might have stomach issues, so we did a full water change and fed him a piece of pea (it was recommended) he would tank him out of the tank and put him in his cup so he could reach air easier, but nothing worked. Please tell me what happened so I know what to do if it happens again, If you know. Was it the tank? Was it to tall for him to reach air?
Amalia
Amalia - 6 years ago
Also, tall tanks are not really recommended since they need more surface area. Shallow long tanks are the best. Also the swim bladder problem may be caused by injury or overfeeding (I think there are also other things that may cause it besides those 2)
