It depends on the fish personality, some Bettas can thrive in a 1 gallon, and she doesn't need a heater if she lives in a hotter climate. I still reccomend it though today I'm getting one, a small one will do, also 1 gallon is way better than that cup there sold in.

Hey sorry but its not safe for the fish to just pour it in a tank. Make sure to set the bowl or bag on the aquarium water so the temperature of both become the same. Then its safe to set fish free into tank. Or else it causes a shock and stresses the fish.

No matter what you say It is a myth. NOTHING and i mean NOTHING. prefers a small habitat. Its like saying humans like living in a closet because they feel more safe. No they dont they feel better in bigger tanks because they can hide when they are scared and or nervous. They also live in rice paddies Yes that is true. BUT those rice paddies stretch from miles.  Yes i find it ok to put them in a 1 gallon but they would be much happier in a bigger tank. So dont go around spreading rumors you got from pet stores because it usually isnt true. Not trying to bash anyone but honestly.  Btw beautiful betta :)
Ray1624
Ray1624 - 8 years ago
Is this where I say I live in a closet? Lol don't get me wrong I do agree with you, but when you live in a small place, a small tank is sometimes all you can have, where I live the owner said I can only have a 1.5gal or smaller, it sucks, but as long as they seem happy it's ok, my betta knows tricks like to swim threw a hoop for blood warm and eating from a wond, I try and give him stuff to do to fix the small tank problem

I had a female Betta fish and I didn't know at the time that it needed such a big tank and I had .5 gallon bowl for her and she lived up to 3 years. I had no filter or heater. I cleaned her every 5 days and she seemed very happy. I now have a 2.5 heated and filtered tank with my male betta Monti. He is happy and loves to eat.. lol! I love betta fish they bring me so much joy and their colors are just phenomenal!

No i totally agree that having a betta fish in a 1 gallon bowl is fine as long as you maintain it well, iv'e seen betta fish in little bottles that are very healthy and vibrant in color, i believe that tank size is not a major problem with betta fish it's about care

Have you gotten him a bigger tank? 2.5-10 gallons is the best for bettas. 76-82°F [25-30°C] is the best temperature for a betta so heaters are necessary. Stores shouldn't sell such tiny tanks. All they care about is the money. So many people are uneducated about bettas so that's why people buy these tiny bowls. So the stores make money and continue to sell the product... sad. I can't really blame people though. They just don't know.
Sorry if you are unable to reply. I don't know why it does that sometimes. Feel free to post on my channel if you want to reply.

You can get a 2.5 gal for the same price as this piece of crap. Im sorry to say this, and I know there is a reason why you are using this bowl... Economic or whatever. But your betta will live a very short and sad life. He/she will have lack of oxygen, no where to swim, and no where to hide when he is scared, and his own discharge will build up ammonia and kill him. This thing is impossible to cycle! I'm so sorry for this fish, its like he's in one of those gross little bowls they keep the bettas in in petco and Petsmart all over again. This is no better than those bowls.
AlexandrasPets
AlexandrasPets - 9 years ago
Wrong, so wrong!! :/ bettas need AT LEAST 2.5 gallon tank, filter and a heater to live a good life. This is just awful and breaks every rule about owning a betta. Get thst poor fish a bigger tank, filter, heater and some plants. And NEVER pour a fish into the new tank! Please do research before you teach others.

I can see how people see this as cruelty but at the end it doesn't matter is not like she is doing a bad thing she rescued a betta and thats all that matters and what it she supposed to do? Let that beautiful fish die in a cup in a fish store that would never we loved? I think as long as they live in a place bigger than a cup they are doing something good plus not everyone has the money to buy a fancy 20 gallon whit heater and filtration yet they try trust me if i had enough money i would buy all the fancy stuff but i don't so yeah .
Liam Bruso
Liam Bruso - 9 years ago
They spend their lives in small cups because no one understands the proper husbandry of these fish. Generally speaking, anything under 2.5 gallons is inadequate, and you don't even have a heater or filter in there. I doubt you could even fit a good filter in there with out killing the damned thing. The tank is so small that ammonia levels will build up... FAST. You should be doing water changes every 1-2 days. I appreciate the live plant but over all I do not see this as an overarching success. At the very least that betta will live, but who's to say I couldn't live in a 3 by 3 room my whole life.

That's way to all for any fish. The only reason they sell these small tanks is because the make more profit off of them. They know ppl will think its easier to care for a fish in that. Ppl don't wanna spend more money on proper tanks and filters cuz it's more and the sellers know that's so they sell these small tanks cuz they ppl will prefer their even though this is not a proper home to keep a fish happy.

i know you might feel attacked with everyone coming on here and telling you that this tank is too small and you probably care a lot about your fish but the truth i that this tank is completely inadequate. bettas in the wild do tend to be found in shallow bodies of water but those bodies of water that they live in can stretch on for miles. they are tropical fish, they need a heater, and a tank that small is hard to heat. bettas are also know for jumping out of their tanks, so it is advised that betta owners have tanks with lids it's better to be safe than sorry. also, keeping a fish with even the simplest of sponge filters is just not okay, that on gallon bowl with fill with toxins, and rotting food faster than you think. a bowl that size should be changed twice a week to ensure good water quality and doing that many changes causes unnecessary tress on your fish. yes he may be able to live in that bowl little, but what kind of life will he have?

very great idea the bowls are the best because bettas get stuck in the filter

+Olena Depa Actually, both my bettas have filters and they never get stuck in them. I use Tetra Whisper filters, not very strong but its enough to keep the water clean. They also tend to prefer having a heater. How is your boy doing? My betta looks almost the same!

Thank you! It is safer without filter! I agree!

Bad. Try a 2 gallon or higher. He will say hi to you by flaring at you when your face comes close to the tank.

Hey I can clearly see that you care about your fish and you do want the best for it but even without the ornaments or rocks in it the tank is still too crowded, I suggest going down to your local pet store and buy a new fish tank maybe at least 5 gallons they only cost around £40 with the heater and filter of which the betta needs and if you don't live somewhere near a pet store try buying one online:)

I wonder, WHY pet stores sell betta fish tanks that are 0.5, 1 or 2.5 gallons. And they call those Betta fish tanks. And you will not find 5 or more gallon fish tank where it says "Betta fish tank". Probably the problem with the size of betta fish tank is in pet stores and their commercial

In comments above I wrote that most of the rocks where taken out, and now here just a small live plant. And after a months I added water till the top, because I did not know if he likes to jump(fish can jump out of the fish tank easily). Gallon for one fish is ok!

Just because bettas are sold cheap doesn't mean you should supply them a cheap tank, they need a heater and a filter. Please invest in a bigger tank

+Qhloe Jill 5 gallon fish tank will be great! A small filter like Tetra whisper http://www.petsmart.com/fish/filters-filter-media/tetra-whisper-3i-in-tank-filter-zid36-16962/cat-36-catid-300019?var_id=36-16962&_t=pfm%3Dcategory from petsmart is good, I have one, not of the best quality, but it works and it is not strong (betta fish does not like water movement).  I just did a research and found Marina® Betta Submersible Aquarium Heater with good reviews (and it has betta fish picture on the box :) ) I might get one too!!!

I would suggest just getting a cheap filter and heater, make sure the filter isn't to strong

What's the best tank/heater/filter to get for bettas? Mine (about 1 year old) lives in the kitchen in a .5 gallon, but I'm worried about the temp. not being right and the size of his home being too small. We change about 70% of the water every 5-7 days and he seems happy/healthy, growing large and very social. I would like to upgrade his home to ensure he continues to live a long happy life.

The temperature in the house is very good, so the tank does not need a heater. Fish looks absolutely healthy and happy. If I find any changes in his behavior or how he looks like, I  will buy heater!!!

Only thing I hate about those wall mounted ones is people tend not to put heaters in them. Bettas are tropical fish and require certain temperatures to stay healthy - when the temperatures are too low their immune system lowers as well as their metabolism slows down and they slowly die. These fish can live 5 - 10 years with proper care, but most think they live a short while due to the myth they can live in bowls with little water change and no heater.

Otherwise, it's a pretty set up, love the idea of the felt in the back and I hope him being in your kitchen (usually the warmest room in the house) helps keep him warm enough to live a long, healthy life for you. You have done everything else spot on, good job :)

Thank you! And yes, he is in the kitchen and we heat our house with the wood burning stove. So it is always good temperature in our house, warmer then when you have central heating (because we have 3 little daughters). That is why I did not put the heater. I also have 20 gallon fish tank, with heater,...for fresh water fish. And I noticed that the heater turns on very rarely ( room temperature is good).  So he is doing good! Very active, nice color, eating well, communicate good!

He has enough  space to live a happy live. I have  there just rocks and small live plant (which he likes). And half of the rocks I took away, after I recorded a video. He is doing great! Hope he will live a long and happy live. I will do my best!

......A ten gallon Is probably the same price if you get it by itself. And yes, he can LIVE in it, but he won't be HAPPY in something that small. Even if you clean it often, that poor fish has no mental or physical stimulation. Also, rounded tanks can be very disorienting for the fish. Please actually do research. I appreciate you giving it a home, though! It is probably happier than where it was before, but you could make it even happier! :) Please have a good day and enjoy your fish.

I'd suggest taking a later of those rocks out just to compensate for the room the plant takes up but love the wall mounted bowls
